We've been going to Vel's Amigo's since I was a kid. I moved away but when I'm back in town I like…read moreto return. One thing that has changed, is you pay for chips and salsa now. Back then, it was a real treat when a flour chip found its way into your basket. Now you can pay an upcharge to get all flour chips. The flour chips were a lot bigger, puffier, and greasier than I remember. They are very filling, so you don't need as many of them. That being said, I prefer the corn chips. Another change is the Pancho Villa. Back in the day this burrito covered with pork and cheese took up the entire plate. Still tasty, it is much smaller these days. Even with a tamale which was pretty much what I remembered, there was a lot of space left on that plate. Service was fine. Our server was prompt and friendly. The atmosphere is a little divey. Very relaxed and comfortable. It hasn't changed dramatically from my youth.

Perhaps the worst possible place you could eat within 150 miles.. It's not Mexican and even if you called it gringo Mexican any 14 year old could make Old El Paso seasoned tacos at home that would crush this place's Mexican wanna be soul. No idea how they're open with so much better MX food two blocks down the street. Go anywhere but here for Mexican food. Only good thing was that I didn't get food poisoning afterward

I came to Macomb for an event and asked the hotel clerk for suggestions for a non-chain restaurant…read more Los Charros was the first one he suggested, and I was in the mood for Mexican, so no other suggestions were needed. There are two locations in town, and I went to the one on East Jackson Street. I was immediately seated in a booth. Water and chips arrived before I could open the menu. The chips were excellent, and the salsa was quite good, though surprisingly oregano-forward (I'm pretty sure that was the flavor). It's like they replaced the cilantro with oregano. Unusual, but tasty. I ordered the Alambres dinner, and this massive plate of food instantly appeared. I don't know what kind of magic they have going on in the kitchen, but I've never seen dinner arrive that fast. Delicious rice (perfectly cooked and seasoned), a nice pile of lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, etc. But the star of the plate: lots of shrimp, thin strips of steak and chicken, sauteed yellow/red bell peppers and onions, smothered in a cheese sauce. All very tasty, perfectly seasoned and cooked. The cheese sauce was a little thin for me, but that's a very minor issue with this impressive plate of food (it was so much food that I ended up finishing it later that night in my hotel room - still good). The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was fast and good, and the price was ridiculously low.

Highly recommended!! Last thing I expected was excellent Mexican food in Macomb, IL : )
