This is a pinnacle to the community. Nothing has changed for the past 20 years! Even the prices are the same!

Over rated tacos, enchiladas are terrible but the sauce is good. They finally improved the parking lot access.

My favorite mexican place ever. Meat is great, so anything with beef is phenomenal. Fried tacos and cheese chips are the meal to get

We found ourselves at Diamond Dave's on July 4th. One of the few places (not fast food) that were…read moreopen and not closing too early. I'd called to make sure they were open. The gentleman I spoke to on the the phone was friendly and let me know they were. We were greeted right away when we walked in and told to take a seat wherever we wanted to. Seating with mostly low top tables and booths. Our server (a woman my age...mid 50s maybe) popped over right away. Very personable and made sure we were finding everything okay. We started with a fountain drink and water, the jalapeno queso, and some jalapeno poppers. Heather had the ground beef chimichanga plate and I had the chicken alambre dinner. Now... I wouldn't necessarily call this Mexican food... Definitely Tex Mex. And that's okay...! I just don't want to give anyone the illusion that it's authentic Mexican. As if the Dave's in the name doesn't probably already do that... Lol What I will say is the food is very good. Big chunks of chicken, creamy cheese, chorizo, and bacon... My chicken alambre dinner... C'mon! There is nothing not to like there! The beans, rice, and salad were on point too. For what it is everything was great and cooked just the way it should be. The gem here though...was the staff! On a holiday... So great to their guests. We got in a conversation with our server and the gentleman working about the best place to see fireworks etc. if you don't like crowds. I'd worked in Muscatine back in the day, probably 25-30ish years ago, and obviously didn't remember much about the area... It was just a good conversation and still really stands out in my mind. There wasn't anything wrong with our food, but if there was, staff like this makes any mistake easy to forgive. Sometimes it's really more about the experience than it is about the food itself. Kudos! And thank you for being open for a couple of travelers who just needed to get out of the Des Moines metro for a couple of days...

It's been a few years since I've reviewed Carlos O'Kelly's…read more It is pretty hit or miss but when it is on, IT IS ON. I've been attending the Iowa City location for decades. This has been my family's go-to for birthdays and Saturdays out since I was a small child. Things I like about Carlos: - Margs. They really do hit the spot. Perfect punch and taste. - Daily specials and for holidays. Ask your waiter or check social media. - Salsa. The chips and salsa are both endless and delish. - I'm a big fan of their enchiladas-- with pulled chicken and cheese sauce. - Kids eat free sometimes. - Parking is a non issue. - There's seating for large groups! - Margs, Chips and Salsa to-go option? Yes, please! Things I don't particularly like about Carlos: - Pricing is high for quality and quantity. - Quality of food can be so hit or miss. (Overcooked, more often than not.) - Waitstaff/wait time can be hit or miss. (It's a college town, I get it.) - Tex/Mex is one thing, but having mashed potatoes on the menu... - It is SO loud in this newer rebuild of Carlos. Overall, I will forever come back to Carlos for margs, chips and salsa!

The place looks nice and the waitress was good, but the food was just kind of disappointing. The chips and salsa were probably the highlight. Hope they can improve soon.
