As I was reading a recent Yelp review for Maluhia tree tunnel and that Yelper states, "its nothing special and don't go out of your way", well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, @ tree snob. I don't feel this way at all about Maluhia Road Tree Tunnel, it sure brings back great memories of my first time visit to Kauai during my honeymoon. 25+ years ago, so happy to be able to experience this Tree Tunnel twice again during my recent visit, one thing I wish tree tunnel is longer and I do not recommend driving this tunnel at night. haha. Tunnel is on the way to Poipu side so this is a nice bonus to pass the tree tunnel to and from. I love the scenery of trees! Please show your respect for the beauty of nature, for this tunnel and trees! A post I came across regarding the Tree Tunnel, history and haunted, Hmmm... happy reading. ( *Sharing this, from social media post*) Haunted Koloa Tree Tunnel Headed towards the Southern shore, we take the scenic route through the famous Tree Tunnel on Maluhia Road. Aptly named, the Tree Tunnel is made up of hundreds of fragrant, century-old eucalyptus trees planted along nearly a mile of roadway whose branches seem to reach across the road creating a beautiful tunnel of shade and foliage. Many late-night travelers claim that the Tree Tunnel is haunted. One night, four brothers were driving back to Lihue after spending the day in Koloa town. The oldest was driving their mother's new truck and, as they rounded out the end of the s-curves, the truck started to sputter and lose power. The oldest brother continued to drive, hoping to make it out of the tunnel of trees before the truck died altogether but, to no avail. This new truck, which hadn't had any problems before, stopped in the middle of the road, in the middle of that long stretch of trees. Maluhia Road has a very slight incline, so one cannot see the end, or the cars coming towards you until you make it to the top of that incline. A little freaked out, the young men saw the yellowish shine of lights on the tree canopy up ahead, indicating that a car was coming towards them. As the light grew brighter, they expected to see the vehicle and its headlights come over the incline any second. Suddenly, the light vanished. Surprised, the brothers waited a few seconds but no car came towards them. Completely freaked out now, the eldest young man tried to start the truck and the engine turned over on the first crank as if it never died out in the first place. He raced to the end of the tunnel as fast as he dared. None of the boys have an explanation for what happened. The mechanics at their local shop saw nothing in their diagnostics and there was no indication of anything that would make the truck die out. As for the strange light that just vanished, some have said it was Pele, others say it could have been the night marchers, and some unseen force caused the vehicle to stop so as not to encounter the ghostly procession. We'll probably never know.

Pretty underwhelming and not a true tunnel. More like just a forested area with trees growing on both sides of the road. There are only a few areas where the trees are growing close enough to look like they're touching, especially true during the daytime. It's also a 50 mph highway, so you pretty much zip through the trees within minutes. If you're heading from North Shore or Lihue to Poipu, you'll drive through here anyways but otherwise, it's not worth a trip just to see! If you're driving a convertible, put the top down to get the best pics while driving through as there's nowhere to stop or pull over!

Do not go out of your way to see this tree tunnel. "Tunnel" is a misnomer and a very generous one at that. It's a road with trees growing on either side, where in a few, but mostly not, it looks as if the trees come together. If you're going to Poipu Beach or Spouting Horn blowhole, you'll drive through this tunnel if you're coming from Lihue. Again, do not go out of your way for this, or you'll be underwhelmed. Entering this tree tunnel is very pretty. It will give you the ahhh! Lush, welcoming, and unique! Large leaves wrapping the trees is also present. It even has this magical fantasy feeling like it came from a story book! Reading more about the history on how these trees got her is pretty interesting: "The original 500 trees were planted in 1911 as a gift to the community from Pineapple Baron Walter McBryde. They were leftover from a large landscape project of his estate home, which are now the grounds of the Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course in Kalaheo. McBryde was the co-founder of McBryde Sugar Company and also managed the Kaua`i Pineapple Company." https://poipubeach.org/blog/kauais-famous-tree-tunnel/ And the fact that it feels like it's story book! It's like part of you island adventure as a tourist! "The tree tunnel marks the entrance to the island's most appreciated tourist attraction - The Koloa Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail or the Holo Holo Koloa Scenic Byway is collectively represented by a series of places to stops that are of historical importance." Eucalyptus is also a very sacred tree. The aroma. The smell. The size! The history and medicinal use of the eucalyptus oil is also very meaningful while you enter this tree tunnel. Breath it all in! Like the a steam room that is infused with eucalyptus oil. This is tree tunnel that is worth entering!

Love it when the afternoon light hits it and the leaves on the vine display different colors and shades of green. The trees are tall and majestic. The trees lining the road symbolizes path adorned for royalty. The experience changes based on the time of the day and the lighting. Drive through it at different times. If you are stuck in traffic at least you can enjoy the view. There is a magical quality. Like land of the fairy tale.

Beautiful tunnel of trees to come across and drive through! Very fun to just randomly find!

8.15.2021 "Tunnel of Trees"- ginormous, glorious, gorgeous and a Kauai favorite landmark to drive through. I do not recommend stopping to take photos. There is no parking --it's a highway. It is extremely dangerous doing so. Still watch out for tourists pulling over and taking photographs and walking around. The surrounding area is epic -- so green, lush, lively. No wonder Hollywood loves making movies on Kauai. Tip: Please respect the land and people. Drive with the aloha spirit. Mahalo!

We had to drive this path to go from our place to do some errands and go to some stores and it was soo beautiful. Its not super long and not something I would make a trip to go see, but it was really pretty. Super quant and peaceful, if you go down it with no traffic, it's nice to just slow down the pace and really take in all the greenery and trees and its just a nice unexpected path to take.

What a wonderful tree tunnel! Driving through it like going between two worlds.

Wonderful scenic driveway links two worlds. I was Alice in Wonderland when driving up and down this tree tunnel. I was picking up some poke at a fine fish market near by, then driving through this tunnel to Poipu Beach - 8 minutes away for an ocean view lunch. What a terrific drive.

I like tree tunnels .. if you want pic with no cars you might have to wait a bit and think about the time of day or you will have to wait.

Beautiful! We had to go through here to get from Lihue to Poipu Beach, but we would've gone out of our way to see it regardless. Definitely worth it!

Drive it! We drove through every day & I didn't realize THIS was the Tunnel of Trees. Truly breathtaking. Right in to Jurrasic Park!

Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful! Really a bummer that there isn't a place to take pictures or any type of sign to indicate where you are. I drove through it a few times before realizing where I was because there isn't a sign. It is well worth the drive and is truly like driving through a movie scene or something. But better, because it's real. Roll your windows down, drive slower than 50, and really take the time to scan the view. This whole island is miraculous! By driving slower and with the windows down you can get some really pretty pictures.

Walter Duncan McBryde, a Kaua'i native, donated more than 500 eucalyptus trees that he had left over when he built a house to create the Tree Tunnel. McBryde, the owner of the McBryde Sugar Co. and member of the territorial government, gave the trees, also known as swamp mahogany, to the county. The tree tunnel is located just off Highway 50 as Highway 520 heads south toward Koloa. There aren't many places to pull over and take photographs, so do it at the start or at the end. The tunnel formerly formed a full canopy, but it was damaged during Hurricanes 'Iwa in 1982 and 'Iniki in 1992. It's interesting to see and is worth driving through on the way to Koloa or Po'ipu.

The Island of Kauai had a long run producing sugar cane, but that has faded along with the government subsidies. Now, the island is seeing the land being converted to coffee plantations. But back in 1965, this site of a former Sugar Mill was designated as a Historic Place. 20 years later, this monument was built to commemorate the history of the area. The monument includes contributor plaques as well as six informational plaques that tell all about the sugar industry and local history. But the eye-catching focus of the monument is the full-sized depiction of numerous sugar mill workers cast in bronze by artist Gordon Fisher in 1985. The native people are shown performing certain tasks, some standing, some seated. It is a beautiful piece dedicated to capturing the look of the island people at the height of the sugar trade. The playlist on board was spot on, setting the perfect vibe. I wish I could find it on Spotify! Despite the weather, the views were breathtaking, and getting a little drenched just added to the adventure. The food was delicious, especially the smoked pork, salad, and fresh fruit, and my husband loved the mai tais. Even without the sunset, the whole experience was magical. After chatting with other travelers, I'm convinced we had one of the best tours available. especially after talking to a couple at our hotel pool who had paid more than we did and only got snacks limited alcohol.
