We accidentally ran into this when we were in the Hanapepe farmers market. Lots of locals lots of local food around here during the farmers market.

If you need something to do in Hanepepe Town check out the swinging bridge. This plantation era bridge has stood the test of time. It does swing but it feels sturdy. It was funny (well only a little) but the max person / weight capacity sign was only posted on the end of the bridge. There was no sign at the beginning. In case you are wondering it is 15 persons max on the bridge at a time.

Fun sight to see before or after your way to Waimea Canyon. My 11 year old was fearless, but my 9 year old was a little scared it would fall. The more people on it the more it swings

Fun stop! Walk over the hanapepe river on the swinging bridge! Only takes about 10 minutes to walk to the end and back.

Such a fun day. I heard about this from other vloggers and it was a great side attraction in this sleepy little town. Glad we did it. Next to The Spice Shop.

The Swinging Bridge may not be a tremendous highlight of your Kauai trip, but if you find yourself in Hanapepe (which you should) please take a moment and walk across. It provides an unique experience and is worth the diversion. When we visited there was an art vendor at the opposite end and although we did not purchase anything the photography was great.

We visited this cool local spot while driving through the historic town of Hannapepe. The cool stuff was walking across this bridge, and the accompanying views of the river and beautiful surrounding hills. The down side was the sketchy troll hanging out on the other side of the bridge. Made my wife and I uneasy, as he acted very strange, and followed us across the bridge and back into town. Other than that, make sure you visit the cool little art shop on the other side of the bridge. Lots of very interesting town history here, make sure you stop and make this walk a part of your tour.

Swinging Bridge A quick fun bridge near the shops in Hanapepe. My niece hated it, but it is a fun thing to do when you are around the shops. Takes about 5 min'

Its a rickety wooden bridge - why all the fuss? Nice small town there at Hanapepe, but skip the bridge - may be rotting out any day now.

This replica of Sir John Tweed's original in Whitby, England, commemorates Cook's first landing on Kaua'i in January 1778. What to Expect: * A thoughtfully maintained park with picnic benches and informative plaques that mark this pivotal piece of Hawaiian history * The site invites a brief reflective stop -- more historical waypoint than major photo-op destination. Perfect For: * Bicultural enthusiasts and history buffs interested in early Hawaiian-European contact moments. * Travelers en route to Waimea Canyon--this makes a meaningful pause before continuing your journey Note: While small, the monument carries weight for its cultural significance; it's best viewed as a quiet, contemplative experience--ideal for travelers keen on appreciating history in a low-key setting.

However, location (history where he was) can't be changed so therefore the 5. It's located on the side of a road in a small town. It has a nice monument to depict the historical factor. There is plenty of parking. It makes for a worthy stop while in Waimea.

Affectionately nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", it is easy to see how this canyon gained its affectionate moniker. Stretching 14 miles long, 1 mile wide and more than 3,600 feet deep, the Waimea Canyon provides breathtaking panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags and deep valley gorges. Even at the first rest stop you come across, you are already high enough that the view would have made the trip worthwhile. There are 5 rest stops on your way up to the top, each offering restrooms, trash cans, and their own respective viewing points; each stunning in its own rights. You can choose to simply stop at each stop on your way up like we did, or drive all the way to the top and work your way back down. Keep in mind it takes almost an hour to drive up to the very top without stopping. And the fog starts rolling in later on in the day obscuring visibility into the canyon. So you'll want to make sure you start your day off early if you're opting for the later strategy. For us, we started on the bottom and worked our way back up. We never made it all the way to the top as the fog had already rolled in by the time we hit the higher levels which made viewing anything on those levels impossible. There is now some construction being done for safety improvements and roadwork patching. Much of which is past due and much needed. As we started to encounter quite a few gigantic potholes on the higher elevations that often required either maneuvering around into oncoming traffic or traversing very slowly over the shallower parts of the potholes. We were quite thankful we were in a SUV because we were fairly certain we would not have made it past some of the potholes if we were in a lower profile vehicle such as a sedan or convertible. While driving the canyon is free (outside of parking), you can also splurge and view the canyon unobstructed from an ariel vantage through either a chartered plane or helicopter ride.
