    Seared trout dish
    Jon L.

First time at Maker Feed Co and I was really disappointed. It is a truly beautiful venue, and wishes we had gone in the warmer.months so that we could have sat outside. I also have to say that the service was truly amazing! They did run out of some of their wines, the the staff was lovely and engaged with the table. It happens, no biggy (especially with COVID, so no worries - if anything, the way it was handled by the staff almost turned it into a positive) The food is where it went all wrong. I ordered the salmon sashimi as an appetizer, and it was very "blah". I am a sushi lover and yes I do understand that ordering sashimi is minimalistic, but the fish did not melt in your mouth, it was served with partially of soggy crostinis. In other words, they opted to go with a non-traditional approach that could have worked, but fell flat... edible is the word (and yes, I mean that as a negative if a dish is only qualified as "edible") The main course I opted for was their seated trout. The description was well done and very appealing. The trout was services over wild mushrooms and potatoes in a broth. Contrary to the sashimi, this dish was not-edible. It was overly bitter, this broth and mushrooms had been infused with the bitterness and became overpowering. I love me some bitter greens, but this was not it. The bitterness was not balanced out but rather left to overpower your palate. The trout's skin had one tiny bit that was crispy, the rest was soggy and the trout tasteless... Once again, only allowing for the bitterness to shine. I could not force myself to finish it. All of this was topped by a check that fitted for what I was hoping this restaurant experience would be... And left me with a bitter taste (literally and figuratively) with the bad dinner experience I had. I would not go back if given the opportunity. It would have been a one star if it was not of the service and staff.

I went here with my brother to get some fries, pogos (aka corn dogs, I hadn't realized that "pogo"…read moreis an exclusively Canadian term until my American friend, Karen K, pointed it out to me, lol) and hot dogs for my little nieces. I have never had a pogo in my life and have no inclinations to change that. I also don't like hot dogs, so all I tried were the fries and they were great. The fries were a bit sweet (from the type of potatoes they use) and they tasted fresh and not from frozen. I liked the texture, they were not mealy. I like that they are unsalted. I think a large was like $6 or something like that. Pogos and hotdogs are $0.99 each. My older niece who is a picky eater and had never had a pogo before, took one bite and proclaimed "I LOVE POGOS!" Lol. She ate one and a half pogos, which is a lot for her. The breading looked crispy. The hotdogs were tiny and they were steamed. The nieces rejected them so my brother and dad ended up eating them. The place is really popular; we had to stand in line for a long time. Decor is old school diner-like. It reminds me of those casse-croutes that are ubiquitous in Montreal like La Belle Province, Lafleur Restaurants, and Green Stop. Most food here is greasy and fried. If you're trying to eat healthy this is not the place to go. It's not my kind of place, but for what it is, I think it's good. It's in a plaza, so lots of free parking.

I visit Orleans a few times a year because my brother lives here. We always go to La Belle Poutine…read moreat every visit because the food is absolutely delicious, and comes in plentiful quantities. The smoked meat sandwiches are flavourful and large, so you won't be unsatisfied. And I often upgrade to a poutine from the regular fries. The fries are hand-cut and have a great taste and texture. The gravy is thick and flavourful, and the cheese curds are squeaky, just like they should be. I have never managed to finish the combo before because it is just too much food. The dining room is also a lot larger than it appears from the outside. There is plenty of seating, the restaurant is clean, and the staff are helpful. Definitely recommend this restaurant, and can't wait for my next visit!
