The Only Reason I Gave 1 Star is Because I Have to Give Something, otherwise I would Give 0 Stars to this Disgrase of a Business and it's Owner I have never written a bad review about a company in my entire life, but I feel compelled to let others know about the absolute worst customer service , worst exchange policy and most arrogant business owner I ever experienced. My Wife bought a ZZ plant on the recommendation from an employee at Make it Green Garden Center as I was looking for a tropical plant for my Son's in-home office that would be low maintenance. After getting home She did some further research online and discovered that the ZZ Plant is toxic to Animals and Humans and since my Son has a Dog and a 6 Month old child there was no way we were going to give him a Plant that could be potential harmful ( or even deadly). The very next morning She brought the plant back to Make it Green Garden Center (with the receipt) and explained that she discovered that the plant was toxic and could be potentially deadly to our Son's Dog or Even worse it could harm our 6 month old Grand daughter . She further went on to explain that She did not want a refund but just wanted to exchange it for something else that would not be toxic to dogs or humans She was absolutely appalled when she was told they would not exchange the plant as their return policy states no returns on Annual Plants, she explained to the owner that it was NOT an Annual Plant but rather a Tropical Plant... the Owner's reply was "they are the same thing so no returns allowed" Annuals and Tropicals are NOT THE SAME THING, not by a long shot... Annuals die each year and Tropicals live forever... So when she explained this to him his reply changed to "well you bought it on sale so no return on sale items" Once again she was floored at Just how Very poor this Guys customer service was... she went on to say "Yes she did buy it on sale, however she was not told that the plant was toxic to dogs and people, and all she wanted was to exchange it" I am still in shock at his reply which was... "You Should Have Asked If It Was Toxic" Whaaaaatttttt Is this Guy for real?.... the friggin arrogance! Any way the bottom line is they did not allow her to exchnge it so she ended up leaving the plant on their counter and walked out with nothing. We will NEVER, EVER set foot in their garden center again and I advise others to do yourselves a favor and spend your money elsewhere where customers are treated with respect. This company is interested in nothing more than your money... Period! But the irony here is that this plant was only worth $6.00, however they have lost several hundreds of dollars of our business as my wife is a gardener and we spend a great deal of money every Spring on Plants and supplies, none of which "Make it Green Garden Center" will ever see again. So in the end THEY ARE THE LOSERS in this deal! read more

Absolutely horrible experience in customer service in this place. I had spent over $400 in past couple years on different trees and plants there. Today we came in looking for an apple tree and were approached by a man who worked there who demanded for us to wear a masks because they were making people wear masks until noon and it was 11:30. I refused but we said we are leaving the store since they had nothing we needed and as we were leaving, my wife asked out of curiocity if 30 min will make any difference which set employee off and turned him very agressive. He started to yell "i dont care! Get out of here! We dont want your money!" at our backs. I had walked my family to the car and came back thinking it was just an emploee who took too much upon himself. So i asked store manager why i was insulted in her store. But nope, store manager was unappolagetic in the least. In fact she said: "its ok, its a rule." She did not even bother making any excuses as to why her emploee had insulted customer for no reason. I guess insulting customers is a new policy of that store. Dont buy anything in this store unless you want some underachiever on a power trip insult you , we will never come back there ourselves. There are plenty of stores in Ottawa region that have just as good selection CHEAPER PRICES and POLITE CUSTOMER SERVICE service such as Carlton Place Nursery, Ritchie, Canadian Tire in Kanata has an amazing selection. read more

Today make it green went from one of my favourite garden centres to wondering if I will every go back. I have been a loyal client for many years, and have purchased many plants, ceramic pots, bird seed, garden accessories and solar lighting, anything for the garden from them. I tried to exchange a defective lantern today and was extremely disappointed by the experience. Over the last month I have purchased a number of solar lanterns and light strings, totalling 400 to 500$. One of the lanterns didn't charge when I placed it outside, I left it out for several days hoping it just needed more sunlight. I tried exchanging it today, 4 days past the 10 day return policy. The cashier, who was very friendly, said she had to check but it shouldn't be a problem as I was only exchanging it, and she did remember that I had purchased many of them. I explained I had been very busy at work and couldn't make it in and besides it was defective, I wasn't returning it. She went to find someone and I went to get bulbs and plants. The woman that then served me repeatedly told me I should be more timely in returning things. Again I explained I just wanted an exchange as it didn't work. She mentioned things were missing from the package, which they were, and I said just take them from the new package as I just needed the working light. She seemed perturbed, again she told me to be timely. Again I said it was defective and I had bought many of them and I just wanted it to work. She told me that things get bought and then returned after parties and that I should be more timely. I asked why would I be getting an exchange if I was doing that and it didn't work. I asked to speak to the owner as I felt I was being accused of doing something wrong, and she said she was the owner. Again she told me to be more timely...I think it was at least 4 times she told me that. I was 4 days past a 10 day return policy, due to my hours at work and the hours of the store, I wasn't returning it, I was exchanging a defective product, I spend thousands of dollars at this store and the owner made me feel like an unwanted client today. read more

I think this is a fabulous garden centre with a wealth of knowledgeable staff and superb plants to choose from.

Every time I go to this garden centre I continually get treated like a piece of dirt by an individual that goes by the name "Jeanette." I have avoided writing reviews about Jeanette but this time I am putting my foot down....enough is enough. Everyone else is fantastic but for some reason she walks around with a sense of entitlement, she is rude, sarcastic, self righteous and I will never buy another plant from this garden centre for the rest of my life! Other then Jeanette the staff are reasonable. However, you can't avoid this moody git so be prepared to see her close to the check out. It's a bad way to end a lovely visit. If you can avoid dealing with her I highly recommend it. Important point and buyer beware, the price they charge to have a tree planted is displayed on the tree next to the price of the tree. Often times, this price does not correspond to the the "planting charge/price" they keep in their book close to the cash. if you want to be sure you are not being over charged just take a picture of the planting price tag. Also, Jeanette is a little touchy when you ask about the company, their name and the person who will be planting the trees. She stumbles and gets a little tongue tied. I asked several times and still was unable to get the man's full name nor his company name. She became very defensive....another red flag! ; Funny, I think the staff were pretty happy when I told her I was sick of her attitude. One staff member looked at me and grinned and whispered under their breath, "owner's wife." I feel bad for the people who have to work around her. Jeanette should go get a real jib and truly learn about the value of providing an exceptional client experience. read more

I purchased a white ivory lilac from Make it Green last month to go along with another I had purchased from Home Hardware the week earlier (HH's last one). I brought the tree home and planted it in the backyard next to the other. As the days passed I noticed that the tree I purchased from Make it Green was starting to lose some leaves. I didn't think too much of it and thought that perhaps it was just the shock of the move. Several weeks later and 80-90% of the leaves had fallen off and it was on the edge of life. I decided to give it a week or two more before I finally had to pull the plant up. I wanted to bring the tree in before the season was up as I had just purchased it and was sure they would provide me with a healthy replacement. As I entered the facility, I walked up to the counter and spoke with the lady at the front. She explained that ALL returns need to be viewed by the owner. It seemed a bit odd as she kind of went red in the face when she told me, but no sweat, I had nothing to hide and would be happy for him to inspect my dead tree. I went out to the vehicle to grab it and came back just as Doug, the owner, was coming outside. He hit me with a barrage of questions ... did you water it? yes did you fertilize it? yes did you plant it right away? yes do you have a fence around it? uhhh yes ... I felt like I was being interrogated for a crime. I was barely able to mutter out, 'it really shouldn't matter what I did to the plant .... I bought it a MONTH ago!' He said that they will not warranty it??? I was floored. I mean I have the exact same tree planted right next to it and it is doing fantastic! What kind of facility cannot guarantee their products for a month? I mean it is hard enough to plant the tree, but then imagine my dismay when the plant dies and I make a decision to uproot it, dig it out of my yard, put a bag around the base, drive all the way back to Make it Green to show them, hoping to get a healthy replacement so I can start the process ALL OVER again. It is not like I was asking for money, I wanted a healthy replacement. This review is merely a warning to ALL people who think this facility services its clients, it does not. They will not guarantee or warranty ANYTHING once it leaves their facility. Be forewarned. You have a choice, decide to go somewhere that treats its customers with respect and dignity. Do not expect them to stand by what they sell. read more

My experience was very similar to Don G. I purchased three Bobo Hydrangea plants from Make it Green on July 10th of this year. As I am making a small hedge, I wanted to have all the plants grow upright the way they are marketed to do so. One of the plants, however, started to grow close to the ground, bent over in a rain storm, or when watering causing the blooms to turn black and die. I called Make I Green, and unfortunately, the staff will not give out their names, so you don't know whom you are speaking to. I tried to explain my problem to them, and asked if I could have the plant replaced. Without even seeing the plant, or acknowledging the problem, the answer was an emphatic "NO". They suggested that I take a picture of the plant and forward it to them. At the time, I didn't have the tech. to do that until my daughter returned from doing errands. I called the Nursery back and got "Doug". (Not a very nice person). I explained my problem, and sent a picture. My response from "Doug" was that the plant was perfectly healthy, although he could plainly see a healthy plant in the background of the picture and plant I was referring to did not look anything like it. "Doug" refused to honour the warranty, and I took the plant to another Nursery. Right away the sales person pinpointed the problem, and although the plant came from Make It Green, the owner gave me another plant (healthy and growing in the right direction - upwards instead of side ways). "Doug" has very, very, very poor customer relations skills. I certainly will not return to Make It Green to make any sort of purchase. All customers, beware - especially all the seniors I see shopping at the Make It Green Nursery. read more
