Only hires her relatives (Structural Systems Inc.) to do service on the building even if different companies offer better quotes. They hired new security which is totally useless, inconsistent, rude people. No more aloha. Move here if you want to get taken advantage of on your HOA fees. This place is wonderful. First of all let me just get out of the way the very important detail of the scenery driving to the condos... Yes on the beach there are tents full of homeless people. If you lived in Hawaii without any help from the government and you would be homeless too because the inflation of everything. Before we got here we read a lot of things about people breaking into cars and stuff like that... Well tell you what I have never in my life had issues with people breaking into my car because I do not let myself be a victim! If you leave stuff in your car you're just opening the door for opportunity. Let me start by telling you the pros of this condominium.... The gate to the hotel parking lot requires a key fob... Then you have to use the key fob to get in to the steel gate to the actual condos... Then you need the key Fob to get you into the elevator... Then to get to your actual condo you need a key. There is security from 3 PM to sometime in the morning. The out side of the condos have been worn down from normal seaside wear and tear but are structurally intact. The elevator was very clean, the outside was clean and my condo was absolutely stunning. (We rented ours out through an AirBNB ad and it was the best thing ever). The beach is never busy always clean and crystal clear. The waves are a little rough at times near the shore it's perfect for inner tubes Rafes stuff like that... And once you get past the edge of the waves it's pretty calm and you could snorkel. The cons- This condo is a bit a ways away from large retail stuff like target Walmart Costco... It's only a short distance but because of traffic it takes a little bit longer than you like about 50 minutes to get into Honolulu 35 minutes to get to Costco. I would definitely recommend this place if you want a nice getaway from all the chaos of Hawaii :) read more

The Makaha Cabanas were perfect for our family of three. Although the surrounding area is run down the beach directly in front of the condo was stunningly beautiful. Our condo was updated and the amenities were unbelievable. I have never stayed in a condo that came with so much stuff. As other reviews have stated this condo is perfect for those who are wishing to just relax on the beach and only venture out occasionally. Driving anywhere from here is a pain and you'll spend a lot of time in traffic. There are no restaurants of quality nearby which was fine with us. A couple of premade pizza from Costco and my boys are happy. We came in december knowing that the sea would be rough but we are all strong swimmers and had no problem with this beach. Having said that, this is not a place for little kids or those unfamiliar with the ocean specially during the winter months. I'm so glad that I took a risk to book at this location on homeaway.com! It was perfect in so many ways! Only a few people were on the beach on a given day, a grocery store is right down the street, and you can BBQ your food by the grills, all without paying the high fees that stereotype Honolulu. Sunsets on the balcony are superb. We even saw whales, dolphins, and sea turtles. In fact, if you snorkel in the water as much as me, you will likely see plenty of sea turtles and fish. The apartment came furnished, with wi-fi, TV, and a full kitchen (with amenities). The only reason why I cannot give this place 5 stars is that when we stayed, the waves crashed so hard that they made it hard to sleep. The windows facing the ocean did not seal out the sound. No, it wasn't a peaceful sound- more like continuous tsunami's rolling in (the area is enclosed and it amplifies the sound). All in all, the one downfall was worth overlooking for a great experience. read more

First off, these are not cabanas in any sense of the word. This is a condo building several stories tall. The unit we stayed in was arranged through Air Bnb and was a great deal and experience. This review is purely of the building and surrounding facility. The best aspects of this place is the it's proximity to an excellent beach. It is located on the beach, you literally walk out of the building into the sand (and there's a convenient foot bath as you come back in from the beach to wash the sand away). There is a secured parking lot with an attendant watching the lot. The building manager is very helpful and has a library of books to take onto the beach if you so desire. The beach is relatively empty on the week days. Weekends there were more people but not so many that it was inconvenient. The best part of everything is the snorkeling right outside your condo. The reef and fish, sea turtles and eels in the area are beautiful. There's also a wicked tide in sunset hours with fun waves for boogie boarding. This is a great, budget destination away from tourist locations. You are with the locals on this side of the island and it's fun! read more

We love this beach, it has great waves, awesome snorkeling and is never crowded. Our family stays out here when they come to visit for extended stays. There is a mix of vacationers and locals every time we come out to the beach. The best time of day here is always right before the sun goes down. read more

We just came home from a 4 nights stay at Makaha Beach Cabana. We stayed at the second floor, so everything and anything that goes on around the beach and surrounding neighbors, we can hear and smell as if they were inside our unit. Here are the rundown of the pros and cons of Makaha Beach Cabana - Cons- 1. The crashing wave is not soothing day or night. The waves are very rough around this area. 2. The beach is not private. Meaning the locals can camp out on the beach any day and night of the week. We had some locals camping out on the beach about 30ft from our unit and they were talking through out the night and smoking pot. They also had a dog that barked constantly throughout the night. 3. No air conditioning. It gets hot on West side of Oahu and there was no AC in the building and the tradewind does not help because it is no fun having hot wind blowing on you when it's already hot hot hot. 4. Walls are thin. You can hear your neighbor's conversation and TV. Bring ear plugs if you decide to stay here. 5. Tiny bugs through out the unit. We're not sure if it's ants, but they had antennas on their head. 6. Young college kids partying into the night on the beach cursing, boozing and smoking. Not a great place with young children. 7. The sand is burning hot during the day. OMG, do not wear your flip flops or your feet will burn. 8. If you are into shopping, Waikiki nightlife and children't activities, then Waianae is not the area for you. Very run down and rural. Garbage on the streets, run down homes and barely any good restaurants. Pros- 1. Hawaii sunset from your balcony. 2. W/D in the building. 3. Building is well maintained even though it's secured in chain linked fence. 4. Gated parking lot. lf you are planning to stay in Wainane, I suggest that you take a drive out to the area first, test out the open beaches and look for any restaurants that might interest you. Don't want you ended up driving back to North Shore, Waikiki area to eat, shop and have fun. read more

Specific Unit #A-406 , VRBO 341092 Owner Wayne offered to pay us $300 to not write a review of his condo. Having personal integrity and a desire to warn others from such a bad experience, we refused this. This trip was a nightmare. Wayne lives on the mainland and rents this out to make money. It became clear in correspondence that he is not familiar with the state of the unit and had not visited for some time. We had both major and minor problems with the unit, but in every case, Wayne stated, explicitly or implicitly, that what we stated was a lie and/or "beyond his control." You can't expect a vacation rental to be flawless, but you can expect issues to be dealt with and owners to take responsibility for the condition of the unit. Don't expect this here. The first night there, before we ever got to set foot on a beach, my wife stepped on a shard of broken glass left on the floor (by previous occupant) of this condo while trying to go to the bathroom in bare feet. It got impaled into her foot. I was able to remove a portion of it at the time with tweezers, but some of it was impaled too deeply. She subsequently could not walk without pain, and could not walk barefoot anywhere, including the beach, without fear of infection because of the open wound on her foot. She had spent months planning many vacation activities, and now could not do most of them. She also contracted an infection the next day. We went to an urgent care facility on the island (long drive), and the doctor said that the glass would have to be surgically removed, and the recovery would preclude her from doing just about anything for the whole trip, and so she recommended trying to postpone this until we got home, which we did. When we brought this up to Wayne, he responded by stating that he heard (third hand) from his buddy who lives on Oahu, who asked the cleaning lady about if she cleans well, who said to Wayne's buddy that she in fact cleans quite carefully, who passed this on to Wayne, who then told us in sum that therefore, what we described could not have happened. Really? We made that up? He also sent us a list of the, "Top 10 Common Risks, " while on vacation in a tropical location. That was very frustrating to my wife and felt very rude to her because we weren't lying. We found Wayne to be very cagey and careful to never admit or take responsibility for anything. He then said that he assumed she was injured walking barefoot on the beach (number 3 on the top 10), and that we could not prove anything. What reasonable person would not apologize for what occurred and offer to pay your medical expenses, or at least assure that they would take action to prevent recurrence? The unit is infested with insects. I don't mean cute tropical bugs that float on by or flies, geckos, or things we have never minded other places. I mean gross little mini cockroach-like bugs that pour out of every nook and cranny and race around the countertops, stove, and through the cupboards. I smashed dozens every day and it did not make a dent. The granite slab will not look so nice when you find it camouflages a bug swarm. It is obvious they travel through the walls to other floors. BTW Wayne said that you should expect bugs, including bed bugs, in any rental unit, and then blamed it on the previous renter, but then implied that this could not have happened because he heard the building provides pest control. The toilet filled to overflowing one day while we were away and had not even used it that morning. That means that someone else's sewage was backfilling our toilet. There was no plunger in the unit, so we could not fix it ourselves. We tried to call Wayne but the numbers left in the unit's info book had been disconnected and not updated. When we found a good number online, his "Agent" did show up and unclog it before the water reached the top and our neighbor's toilet water covered the floor. The next door unit is occupied by some young people that have a party most nights. One night it was so loud that we could not hear our TV and the wall was pounding. One other nearby tenant got in a shouting match with them about it and was run off with threats and curses from a large man. The parking lot security guard did nothing. I went down and asked him if there were rules. He said only after ten, but then proceeded to inform the loud people that our unit had complained about them. This only served to enrage them, and they then pounded on our shared wall and door, and shouted taunts and threats through our window. My wife then felt unsafe for the rest of our stay, and this did not provide for a relaxing environment. We let Wayne know, because we expected he would care. No apology. He said that situations like this are normal here as in any hotel (?!?), and again "beyond his control." I could go on, but this should be enough information for you to make a better choice on Oahu. read more

The condo was as descibed in online ad-clean and updated. The beach, which is right outside the codo was beautiful. However, the surrounding area an only be described as "scary". Run down homes, homeless roaming the area, graffitti, police sirens going off continually. Clerk at grocery store advised us to seek safer accommodations if possible when we told her where we were staying. We headed back to Waikiki and stayed at a resort there for a couple of days. Headed back to condo to stay for 2 nights as we could not afford to stay in waikiki the whole week. No way to get money back as it was paid for in advance. The days we were there we went to beach and it was beautiful, water was great, saw sea turtles and oter sealife right from beach. Security guard in parking area did not give us confidence in safety of location. She said the fenced enclosure around the condo "usually" kept the criminals out, but "you never know". Advised us to "be aware" of our surroundings at all times. I was there with my husband and 13 year old son. This was not the "family" atmosphere we were seeking when we rented the condo. If you can overlook the threat of crime, the shabby surroundings, and no restaurants nearby, the unit and beach were nice. Just bring earplugs to drown out the police sirens, babies crying, people yelling at each other throughout the night. read more
