Not sure how long they've been around but it was our first time here. They feature local beers and don't brew their own. There's a bar with stools, a community table and a couple of two tops. We were on our way to somewhere else so we didn't sample much. A craft beer and a "custard". Both were good. Staff wasn't very chatty and there's not much atmosphere. As a vegan find good places to eat can be tricky but we eat here ALL the time. The menu rotates but there are always two sandwiches minimum we can eat, and they are always amazing. Honestly this place is such a gem. I recommend any tofu sandwich, the pickle plate and the potatoes (ask for vegan aoli). We probably eat here once month and it has never disappointed me! It's such unique, fresh and well made food. 10/10 recommend!! read more

It's good! Nothing amazing, but it's certainly worth it. I've had the jerk tofu and the cubano. Jerk tofu was nice and spicy and lots of flavor for a vegan sammy - thumbs up! The cubano was nice, very savory but huge chunks of pork fall out easily, making it a bit difficult to eat. The service is OK. We asked for our sandwich to be cut in half and she told us that we could just do it ourselves (and never gave us a knife). I mean, I am no expert but I would assume kitchens have knives with which they can cut things? Both times I've gone in, the lady standing at the register didn't say a word until we greeted her. Mind you, there is no one else she was talking to or tending to. Only then, it's an immediate "what can I get for you?" even though I've had absolutely zero time to read the menu. Whatever, food is good and I am not coming to chat it up. I am a big believer in the idea that service shouldn't really detract from my overall thoughts on a place. The food should be the real story and that's why this place get's a pretty positive review from me. I'll be back to try the other veggie sammy. read more

Pure awesome. Walked in, had this amazing pork sammich, a tasty, cold craft brew, and a wonderful chat with the staff. That night, I literally dreamed about that sandwich. So I went back the next day and got another one. Go. Eat. Drink. You won't be disappointed. To the two-star reviewer complaining about the mushroom bucatini -- Maize & Barley doesn't even serve that, or anything close to it. Looks like you reviewed the wrong restaurant. read more

Horrible experience Stopped in to see if we ordered a sandwich and beer if my friends could eat their yogurt from next door. We were promptly told no outside and drink and no service without a mask. And there is no mask mandate. So we tried to try your shop and you refused our business because my family had a yogurt from next door. Appears that you don't share space and you just refused new business. Your sign also says we could show proof of vaccination but you don't even ask. As I live close by, Edmonds is often famous for flash in the pan restaurants and shops. Its expensive to rent and tourist driven, but a few gems pop up. I have to say, walking in to the place I was a bit "oh, its one of those places" meaning a sandwich kiosk with few choices and sparse seating. Which is totally true! But the food is all produced there, including the bread, and the pickles are awesome. My cubano was not traditional, but so damn tasty. Interesting selection of beers and ciders. I was kind of put off by the reader board, but the hostess asked what I liked, made suggestions and I was pleasantly surprised. Small, mom and pop, but the food quality is the real deal. Wish they had pickles to go! read more

Wow this place knows flavor. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. The jerk chicken sandwich, super juicy with a wonderful sauce on some perfect bread. Then their tofu sandwich, even better. The potatoes with aioli, we actually got the vegan aioli, and despite the look of it, it was the star. And finally their special soup today was Cajun split pea, but not like any I've had. It was thick, hearty, and smoky, yum. Plus the service was great. I'll definitely come back and bring people here. read more

Whenever I have visitors from out of town, I make sure to take them to lunch at Maize & Barley. The menu is on the smaller side, but that means that everything on it is done exceptionally well. Between the vegetarian/vegan sandwiches and the arepas for a GF option, there's something for everyone. The beer selection is excellent, and the atmosphere is fun yet intimate. They tend to be POPPIN' during lunchtime on Saturdays, but don't let the wait time scare you off--grab a beer from the bar and settle in because it's well worth the wait. read more

Stopped here on a whim. We love Cuban sandwiches. Have had the famed Miami Cuban in Miami. Also have been to Cuba. Maize & Barley hits it out of the park. This place is the best. We love Jon who is our most regular bartender. He knows his stuff, is kind and funny, and goes the extra bit to make us always feel welcome and valued The beer selection is varied and interesting and always delivers and the prices are reasonable for the exceptional selection. Food is fantastic. The Latin-inspired food introduced me to the deliciousness of arepa, and I appreciate a place that can deliver a little heat in the form of curries, jerk spices, and their own hot sauces. I am not strict vegan, but I try to choose plant-based more often than I used to. When I order vegan here, I am never disappointed. So flavorful with great textures. I just ate the tofu Rachel and it was damn good. My husband swears by the Cuban, but after trying the lamb curry sandwich tonight, he says that he may have to swap his regular order. I hate to tell you about the food pairing nights (because there are limited seats and we want to keep ours), but if you have ever been curious about what a great chef can do when he let's loose (and pours you way too many rare and delicious beer pairing options), keep an eye out for their tasting menu dinners, and SIGN UP. They have the best sidewalk bar seating in town. The greatest view for people and dogs with a legit heater and cover from the elements. Very thankful for this option in the pandemic. Delicious! Tried the Cubano, beef sandwich, and gumbo with bread pudding dessert. Homemade bread, great flavors. I appreciated that the dessert wasn't overly sweet- and my daughter loved the homemade blackberry soda (which also wasn't too sugary.) Nice selection of beers and cider. Still my favorite place to grab a quick bite in Edmonds. I love the Rockfish and the Cubano, so it's always a difficult choice if they have both on the menu. I always get the Tembleque! It's so good! I appreciate the variety of beers. I'm not much of an IPA person and Venus always has something for me. If you're not up for a beer, try the ginger soda! read more

I stopped back in for lunch with colleagues on Friday. Everyone enjoyed their sandwiches...I had the tofu and sliced beet sandwich. The flavors were good but the beets completely overpowered the tofu(maybe cut the amount of beets down and increase the tofu? Outstanding rotating beer taps. Stumbled upon this place today while taking our kids to get some frozen yogurt next-door. I was super excited to give it a try because I had heard that they had vegan options, but wasn't sure where they were located. When my husband and I tried to walk and we were told the very roundabout way to put our mask on even though we were inquiring about whether we should grab our immunization cards. The owner definitely had a chip on her shoulder, but eventually handed us some masks that we willfully put on. After we ordered, we went outside to take a seat at the tables the street. My husband took our daughters next-door to grab some frozen yogurt to come back and join me with. The owner came out holding a sign, mumbling about us not being able to eat the frozen yogurt there and that the tables were reserved for her business. She then said that it wasn't a big deal because they were slow... Which I thought was weird that she even said anything to begin with. But my husband at that point was so irritated that he just took our children away inside at the frozen yogurt tables. After some time, she brought the food I had ordered out and simply asked where we wanted her to put it. I said right here with my family and she obliged. Very cold very offputting, the communication was very much skewed. With that being said, the food was pretty decent. I was expecting it to be pretty epic given the behaviors that we endured. We have family through and through throughout Edmonds and Shoreline, born and raised... I have never seen a business act like this in the area. Especially during these times. We all need to support one another, especially small businesses. The owner of the frozen yogurt shop thanked me for working in the hospital as a front line worker and treated me to a complimentary vegan yogurt. I apologize for having to take up one of her three tables in order to eat the food I had bought from next-door... She told me that it was no problem, and she didn't mind that I was sitting with my family. That's the Edmonds we know. read more

Absolutely fantastic place. Great, creative draft beer selection, I had a holiday spiced pale ale that was terrific that I'd never seen before. But the food! They have these carribbean sandwiches. I had the Cubano. Perfectly seasoned, delicious meats with great pickles served on this maize based "bread." Remarkably delicious. I also had a desert which I've never seen before with a coconut custard served over a pumpkin custard. Outstanding. Very friendly owners. This spot is going into my regular lunch rotation for sure. Original, unique, and truly delicious. It's hard to find places doing something really original and doing it so well. I give this place my highest rating. read more

A very cool little restaurant in downtown Edmonds. They have a small food menu of sandwiches and soups and had 13 beers on tap when we visited. We ordered pork shoulder on a roll, chicken on arepa and gumbo, served with habenero oil on the side. Everything was made in house including the roll and arepa. The food was delicious and priced well. Venus (the owner) was very nice and gave us the background on the food and the restaurant. This is a great place to grab a bite and a pint. It's laid back and kid friendly with reasonably priced kid options on the menu, in house made soda and board games. I'll definitely visit again. read more

Only open for 2 weeks and awesome! The craft beers are cold and crisp. The food a perfect complement to the beer. Well done!!! My husband and I tried the 3 sandwiches - we skipped the tofu - all were excellent! The star was the slow cooked pork. Y.U.M! Spicy and flavorful but not hot. The custard was creamy and sweet with bits of pineappple in the coconut concoction (think pina colada). They're working on adding outside seating for summer which will add to the seating capacity. Came here for lunch on a Friday. Really clean and nice atmosphere. They have house made sodas and a small menu (which is always a good sign to me) I got the Cubano and my boyfriend got the smoked chicken sandwhich. We loved this little place! I had the rockfish on an arepa and my husband had a Cubano and cider. We were still hungry so he had the chocolate bread pudding and I had homemade coconut custard. Everything was delicious, a nice surprise! Would definitely go back again and again. Top notch! read more
