This is my family's go to take out place. We've been going there just about since 1958 or so. We are spicy food eaters and our requests for extra spicy is never disappointing. Mainland has been a Saturday staple since I was a child and boy have they fallen off. My order today was simple, 1 small egg drop soup and a small shrimp fried rice. What I received was soup that was so gelatinous that I had to cut it with waters fried rice with overcooked shrimp that were mushy. The food is good, but the customer service is lousy. Ordered takeout over the phone. When I arrived to pick up my food, She ask for my CC without giving me my total. I gave her my CC and asked her to confirm my total. She then got annoyed and yelled at me. She returned my card and receipt and told me to look at my receipt. She was rude the whole time. I tried to explain to her that I wasn't sure because she had never rung me up on the register to give me the total price. She ignored me while I was trying to explain and went back into the kitchen. This place is not good based on my standard. In my opinion egg rolls did not seem fresh. The coleslaw was not crunching on the bite. The wrap was tough. Everything had a traste of being fried twice. The crab Rangoon was too hard to chew. My teeth still ache from thinking about it. This restaurant offers takeout and delivery. I'm not sure about dine in since I ordered for takeout. I live in the vicinity of this restaurant but I've only ever eaten here a handful of times in my life. This restaurant is what you'd expect from a typical neighborhood Carryout. It has the same options of the others and the environment inside. I ordered Sweet and Sour shrimp and my boyfriend ordered Shrimp Egg Foo Young. My order was typical of the tempura battered/fried shrimp, and I got steamed white rice with it. The S&S sauce was packaged in a separate container as was the rice and shrimp. Everything was nice and hot and the shrimp was crispy. The only complaint I have is that the sauce was a little runny. Wasn't very thick like I'd expected it to be and like I've had at other Chinese restaurants. It also had some fruit (?) pieces floating around in it which I've never seen before. Overall 3/5 for flavor. My boyfriends order , egg foo young, looked good and satisfactory for what it's supposed to look like. The flavor, he said is very good and hot. Mainland has been our go to Chinese spot for a few years and sadly, I think it may be coming to an end. Overall, they are a solid choice but not worth the extra trip but definitely a good option if you live close by. Here are some things we've eaten in the past: - Shrimp Egg Foo Young: I am tough critic for this dish because its been more favorite for over 20 years. With that being said, the star of this dish is the gravy and sadly, Mainland's gravy needs a little help. Its really light colored (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) but sooo bland. I always get it hoping it will be better and each time its bland. - General Tso Chicken/Shrimp: Solid choice! It always has a nice crispy despite being saucy and of course, you get a lot of broccoli in this dish! Standard quality! - Egg rolls: We normally get these for free when your order is over $30 (or something). They are really good so its a great addition. - Shrimp and Broccoli: We took a chance on this and should have ordered something else. I didn't know how you can mess up shrimp and broccoli--- but they did by making the brown sauce the consistency of gravy. It was super thick and weird. - Fried Rice: In the past, we would upgrade our white rice to fried rice because why not....and I wish we didn't. The rice is very lightly fried and lacked flavor. So frying the rice didn't really do anything special and was more money. - Steak and Cheese Egg Rolls: THIS IS THE MAIN ATTRACTION! I don't care what you are ordering from this place but you MUST leave with at least 2 steak and cheese egg rolls. These are the best ones I have EVERY HAD and worth the trip. - Half and Half: I heard it was good so figured I would try it! It's solid and comes for free as an option if you spend over $30 or something. Treat yo self! -Honorable mention: Chicken Wings! When you walk in, there is no one to greet you. You just seat yourself.... it was pretty dark in yhe restaurant portion with random boxes in just about every corner. Almost like they are in the middle.of a renovation. i was acknowledged by my waitress as i sat down but it took her about 4 minutes to bring me a menu even though she was literally one table away doing something random (not helping a customer). I ordered general tsao chicken with fried rice and a spring roll and half and half. I made sure to emphasize that i wanted it extra spicy. Spring roll came out first, it was huge and pretty good. It also came with a very sweet version of duck sauce. Next was the GT chx and fried rice. It looked amazing..... until i started poking it with my fork. Most peived were hard as rocks. The rice was clearly not made fresh, which is to expected in These types of establishments, and the broccoli was literally cold. I found a meaty peice of the chx and took a bite only to realize there was no spice whatsoever in the sauce and the meat was chewy. At the end of the meal, i left having only eaten the broccoli and a small portion of the rice. The sauce was good, just not spicy. For me, this place serves authentic Chinese food compared to the Chinese food and fast food restaurant business this place is a gem. The front counter shaft are very friendly, The cooks don't seem to understand English to well but that's ok. The authenticity is great. The restaurant is a little outdated and aged but that seems to add character to this place. Being that it's in a strip mall right next to a laundromat you do have a good amount of parking. Mainland food has decreased in quality. They rush you through your order, they get smart with their customers as they are the only local carryout. They do not pay attention to order details because they are rushing even when slow. Therefore, the quality of your food is poor and not cooked the way you want it. Been going to Mainland for over a decade but, have decided to spend my hard earned money with someone who value their customers and the food that they serve. Mama song is all about her business.So don't cross her or you will get it back.But for the most part she make sure you get good service.The food is fresh and hot service is fast your pickup order is normally ready in 10-15 minutes.CDC guidelines is in place with social distance and hand sanitizer with customers wearing masks. Hello. I have been going to this restaurant for years. The last few times my food has been sub par. On 7/3/2019 (Yesterday) my Mom stopped there to get the lunch special #12 (2). The #12 is Shrimp with Chinese Vegetables. The first issue was the customer service (Poor). My Mom was spoken to in an abrupt manner, and was told to "Hurry Up!" The person said that she was in a hurry. My Mom told her to wait a minute, we are the paying customer, and not to speak to her that way. The next issue was the food, our #12's order. When we opened the container the sauce was like jelly. I called, and told the person on the telephone about this issue. The person asked "Do you want to bring it back?" My response "No we are all the way home..." She then states that it sounds like to much cornstarch was used, and that she would inform the crew for next time. Then the person ask "Do me a favor, take the food out, and add 2 tablespoons of water, stir, and put in the microwave. I told that person that we should not have to do that. This is unacceptable. In hindsight, I should have drove back over there, and retrieved my money (Not settled for crap), but my future course has been altered. I do not plan to be a patron anymore. My money is important, and I need to be more diligent in requiring (Demanding!) accuracy, and acceptable food orders. If you go to Mainland Chinese, check your food, and demand high quality because Chinese food is not that cheap. A lot of regulars seem to frequent this business . This will be my first review ever. I may read them, but never written one BEFORE TODAY. I use to attend Bishop McNamara High School, just across the street from this establishment. So we gave this carry out LOTS of business throughout my four years and then some. I now live in this area so I still occasionally go to Mainland on junk food days/nights. It seems like every time I go in there or call, the lady at the front that handles everything, is a REAL PROBLEM. I've probably went there at least 5 times this year alone and it's the same thing. RUDE on the phone, RUDE in person. And trust me, I understand that the lady there may have had some unruly customers....but how about you act that way when someone gives you a reason. Last night, was THE LAST TIME I WILL EVER give this business any of my time and money. I simply called, started my order and in the middle of ordering, she put me on hold, that was fine. When she came back, I simply said "hi" and continued my order. SHE THEN yells and rebukes me and says "HI, DON'T HI ME, I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT!" This is something very small, but I had enough of her and her disrespect towards me. I should've left many reviews after each time I visited this place, but I didn't. This place two years ago food was horrible. They had went completely down during the pandemic and I had to cut them off...I decided to try again, my food was right back to A1 status. Have been coming to Mainland for years now. Lisa the front counter lady literally knows my moms name hahahaah! The food is quality and because I order almost the same thing every time when I call I'm greeted with a " hello big boy " You can already imagine my delight. Mainland is a little hidden gem located in district heights by mount Calvary church. The general tsos chicken is really good and crispy I have never had a bad batch. The rice is exceptionally sticky and chewy. The only knock I have on mainland is that they don't deliver. If they did their business would take off even more I'm sure of it. I was soooo disappointed with my combination Egg FooYoung. First i don't remember any Chinese Restaurant putting green peas and carrots inside Egg Foo young and the gravy is way too lights. I use to eat here all the time 20 plus years ago. Now the Shrimp Egg Rolls was huge and pretty good but i wasted $16 dollars cause that Combination Egg Foo Young was nasty. I would first like to start off by saying that customer service is horrible. They are very disrespectful and condescending. I ordered beef and broccoli with extra brown sauce, I also specified I wanted my broccoli steamed. This means that I wanted it nearly undone and not "well done". She yelled at me and said you mean well done they won't understand steamed. I am not sure why adults wouldn't understand the difference between steamed and well done but okay. I get there to pick it up and she is overly rude, neglected to give me a fork and soy sauce. When I asked did she put extra brown sauce in she exclaims "you didn't ask for extra brown sauce, just extra rice", and then corrected herself and said oh yes we cooked it in with extra brown sauce (which she realized I did ask for it) in which it was not. I am upset because I/we don't deserve such disrespect and trust me I will be reaching out to the manager. If one would like to contact me after reviewing this post please do, because I will. Mixed about this place. On one hand, the food is so good. Everything is freshly made...not over cooked like most carry out spots. Best Chinese carry out in this area no doubt. First my friend called and she messed up one word and the lady hung up the phone. My friend called back and asked the lady a question (what sizes does their drinks come) and the lady responded back rudely saying i dont know, what do you want. Then when we got there they have signs saying anything under $10 there will be a 50cent fee.
