Owner/manager refused me service because somebody who had been in the store before me had asked to…read morepurchase something similar with an expired ID, or so the guy said. I did have ID, and a non-expired one and was not with the person so there was clearly no legal reason to do this, but the store owner claimed it was "his right" to refuse me service. To be clear, there was no indication that this person was even underage, yet I was refused service. I hope to have this businesses liquor license revoked from the town of deerfield so somebody willing to sell liquor to customers with valid ID can instead be licensed. Avoid.

It was traumatic, disturbing, and unprofessional to the point of bordering on assault, and I…read moreconsidered calling the cops. I went to this store with my tween daughter (I am a 56-year-old mother) to purchase a small bottle of wine and a bottle of hard cider to cook French onion soup. My fourteen-year-old daughter is interested in learning languages and saw a bottle at the register with French on it; she touched it and asked me what it was out of curiosity. When it came time to pay, the (frankly scary and rude) young male cashier asked for her ID. I was dumbfounded and explained she was my daughter, confirmed that she was a minor and that the (small) purchase was for me to make soup. I laughed playfully, thinking it was an obvious misunderstanding and that I could make my purchase, but instead, he went to locate the manager and did not return. On my own, I found the manager and explained the scenario, and she told me unless I could produce an ID saying my daughter was twenty-one, they would have to ask me to leave and would not sell to me. I pointed out that nowhere in the store was a sign informing parents that if their child touched a bottle, the customer would be asked to leave if they could not prove that the child was 21. She stated that it was unnecessary to post this and that it is apparent children should not "touch" a bottle (I'm thinking of all the times at Whole Foods and the Coop when my kid helped me unload a shopping cart, and we were not harassed or treated this way). I expressed dismay and said that I would not shop there and that I would tell others in the community of this, to which the male cashier screamed "F-ck Off" at me (in front of a line of customers) as my daughter and I left the store. My daughter was so upset and traumatized by this she burst into tears in the car. I cannot emphasize enough how abusive this experience felt and how threatened I felt as a single (older professional mother) with a young adolescent daughter by my side. Please do not patronize this store and let others know of this experience. There was absolutely no need for either the manager or her staff to treat us this way; it was an abuse of (petty) power directed at women. PLEASE NOTE: I have since talked with the Deerfield police as this bordered on feeling like harassment or discriminating and if you have had a similar experience (as others have, just look at Yelp) you can file a complaint with the Massgov site page for the ABCC (alcohol beverage and control commission) and with the town of Deerfield Selectboard.

I've been going to Leeds Package for several years. It's in my neighborhood, it's convenient, and…read morethe prices are good. And there is a very nice woman who works there--she's always friendly and I like seeing her. However, one evening a couple of weeks ago I went in and a younger woman working there was not wearing a mask. She was walking around talking to people and covering her mouth with her sleeve. When I expressed concern, the cashier called the owner, who, after about 5 minutes, came out with the young woman behind him--they were both wearing shabby, old-looking masks. She pointed at me and said, "That's her!" The owner dismissed my concerns outright, telling me that she had an appropriate face-covering (he said he checked the security cameras). I told him I felt dismissed and not safe shopping there anymore. Rather than feeling heard and receiving an expression of concern, I felt ganged up on by the owner and the young woman. Before this incident, I would have given this store 4 stars. Horrible experience. I won't be going back.

The person who wrote the negative review clearly has some sort of complex. This place is as…read morefriendly as it gets. If they were not ID'd the first time they came in, that is a very big deal up here in MA as you will get immediately shut down and fined tens of thousands of dollars if you are caught not properly ID'ing. If the manager seemed extra strict the next day its very possible that she may have learned about the lax id'ing by the employee and was understandably worried. It is law in MA that every member of a customer group must be properly ID'd, even if only one person in the group is actually purchasing alcohol (exception only for when it is a parent who happens to have their child with them while out shopping). This has happened to me in other stores and I'm white. My boyfriend, who is black, loves this place and has never had a negative experience. He says he has never felt "vibed" by the folks working in the store and he has lived long enough on this earth to know when he is getting racist vibes. In his experience, they have always been friendly and helpful to him. He loves the unique whisky selection and I love the well curated selection of local beers. The beer prices are slightly higher than what you might pay at stores in downtown Northampton, but I just consider that a convenience fee and its never more than a couple dollars difference. Great staff and a big selection in a tiny little store. Cheers!
