They have an old wooden bar with seating and then a lot of space next to that before you get to a row of high top seating that reminded me of a diner. On the other side of that divider was restaurant seating. All that being said, once we placed our order and watched the bartender as he made our drinks, we were glad we stayed. I didn't get his name, but he made a very good old fashioned! I would return for that. We chose not to stay for dinner, so I can't speak to the food.

The bar is large and several large screen TV showed baseball games and the Masters' tournament. My bartender was attentive and allowed me to sample the peanut butter beer they have on tap (weird! kind of good) and kept the $2 cans of PBR coming. I had already eaten lunch but definitely suffered from wing envy as I watched a nearby patron devour a plate of excellent-looking wings. I'll come back to Parkside! Gotta try those wings, and - who knows? - maybe join a pickup game of volleyball in one of their outdoor courts this summer.

I didn't expect much regarding food choices and even food quality, but I had hoped to be delightfully surprised. The menu is as you would expect from a bar, with lots of fried food. They did have a choice of three different kinds of salad so I went with the healthiest option which was grilled chicken salad. The salad was fine but the chicken was terrible. It was way over cooked and did not even taste good. I ate probably 2 ounces of chicken or less and focused on eating the rest of the salad. Everyone at our table said the service was great but their food was marginal. Prices were reasonable but with the lack of decor and acceptable food, I figured I wouldn't never return there. Later that night I was hit with some severe digestive problems and we will leave it at that.

We were barely seated when they began taking drink orders--super efficient and friendly service right from the start. I tried the Cherry Bomb Blonde beer and really enjoyed it--light and flavorful. The servers worked as a team and got everyone's orders in quickly, which is impressive for a group our size. We started with the pretzel bites and beer cheese, which were a definite 10/10--warm, soft, and perfectly paired with the cheese. We also shared a hamburger pizza, and really appreciated the thin crust and how the hamburger was broken up into small pieces. The sauce was sweet, and we would've loved just a little more of it (or maybe some on the side for dipping). We're not from the area, but if we were, this would definitely be a regular spot. I've included pictures of the BLT pizza and the jalapeño pineapple pizza that others in our group ordered--both got great reviews too. Overall, fast and friendly service, especially impressive for a large group, and the food was delicious. Highly recommend!

Let's be honest here: this is a diner in a small town, and as such should be considered according…read moreto those parameters. But by any standards of dinerdom, the Muscatine is tops. We came with a huge party of out-of-towners after a wedding the night prior, and were well-accommodated with a smile. I had NY Strip w/ 3 eggs over medium and hashbrowns, my sweetheart had the veggie omelet, and another friend ate French toast. All were perfectly acceptably delicious, and to my surprise, my steak came out as medium rare as I'd ordered it. How often does a diner get rarish steak right?! I also appreciated the option of American fries (neither French nor Freedom) instead of hashbrowns, though I didn't take it. The French toast was eggy and delicious, looking and tasting pre-buttered (if you think that's bad, you don't know nam), and the veggie omelet was packed full of fresh greens, oranges, whites, and reds. But the real reason to come to the Muscatine is the service. Mr. Wonderful is the cheerful face that makes the place sparkle, and there's a framed front-page article from the local gazette to prove it. He cheerfully inquires where everyone is from and informs you of various and sundry things in a nigh-impenetrable accent, smiling and refilling coffee from several feet in the air with nary a drop spilled. If you tell him when to stop filling, he admonishes you that he is a professional and with a wink, advises you that anyone can do it. His bright-eyed partner and hostess is far more understandable, and cannot fail to make the grumpiest grouch crack a smile. Whether it's amply adequate diner food or service with a smile, the Muscatine Family Style Restaurant is Muscatine's place to be. Especially if you're over 60 on a Sunday afternoon.

I actually went back to this establishment a few times because I wanted to give Stout's Irish Pub the benefit of the doubt. I thought maybe the first experience was just an off day for the waitresses. Unfortunately, after going back, I realized it wasn't a one-time thing. Each time, I've found the service to be rude, dismissive, and generally unwelcoming. There seems to be a select group of staff who are very close with certain customers and will spend their time talking with and befriending them, while other customers are seemingly ignored. I've also noticed staff spending a lot of time on their phones or sitting at the bar instead of checking on customers. The overall attitude from some of the staff gives off major "mean girl" energy. It's especially noticeable because there was a newer staff member during my most recent visit who was genuinely kind, attentive, and good at her job. I really enjoyed interacting with her, and she honestly stood out from the rest in the best way. The food is just okay and, in my opinion, lacks flavor. If you order it to go, expect it to be pretty soggy by the time you get home. I gave this place multiple chances because I really wanted to like it, but unfortunately the repeated poor service and mediocre food have completely turned me off. I won't be returning.
