If I could put a negative for this review it would be a -5. First impression was oh crap this is a tweeter bar!! Everything screemed leave now but I was hungry and had eaten here when I lived in the area. Apparently since the max lined moved into milwaukie it brought the homeless and tweeters to the gkadstone area. The bartender was a train wreck slow and had the personality of a turtle but since I was just there for the food I ignored the looser behind the bar. Then I got the food #6 combo and if you expect quality food forget it. Sweet and sour chicken you could hardly get a fork in it and was dry as could be. The fried shrimp was even dryer even with sauce!! The rice was just ok along with the subgum. Really used to love Mai Wahs. I'll have to try again later. But this visit was bad. Found out they don't have a restaurant portion anymore it's only the bar. So we decided to try it anyways. sat down and waited fifteen minutes for the server to come over. They said they'll bring us menus and left. Took another ten minutes to get the menus. By this time someone brought a dog in which wasn't a service dog (been around service dogs know how they act, this one wasn't trained). Also sadly my mom is allergic to dog , especially wet dog, and her allergies started acting up. We held out a few minutes thinking they'll ask the dog to leave but didn't and still no sign of our server almost 30 minutes into it. Once the really loud music started we just couldn't take it and decided to leave. Think maybe the daytime would be better for us if it's going to be a bar only. Someday we'll try again. This used to be my favorite Chinese food place since I was a child. Since COVID though they got rid of the dining room and converted everything to one room with the bar. I decided to order to go since it's not welcoming unless you like bar atmosphere and not everyone does. The bartender knew I was there for pickup but didn't acknowledge me when I came in so it was a bit awkward just standing there at the bar to pick up my food. Actual food seems to have changed since COVID/over the years. The crab puffs were absolutely awful. Threw them away! Pork noodle soup was good but not as it used to be. Pork chop suey was excellent. The white rice had a weird flavor to it for some reason but I still ate it. Overall, would not go back as the food just isn't worth it. However, if I frequented dive bars I would suggest this place. Don't waste your money for a giant thing of dough, and the stuff inside the egg roll wasn't good either, spit this one out... Crab puffs, nothing special about them, but they were alright. Pork fried rice, very dry. but managed to eat it by throwing some soy sauce and sriracha on it. The orange chicken, I personally didn't like... Just like the shrimp, over battered, and the sauce was just bland.... it was orange tho.. I'll give them that? beef broccoli - not good. 2 stars for the excellent service. The restaurant is closed so we joined the bar for lunch on a weekday in September. The booth we found was terribly torn up, in serious need of repair. The decor overall is dated, not welcoming. We sat near the kitchen and frequently had a waft of a horrible sewage smell coming our way. We hoped it was broccoli cooking...? Doubtful. The bar tender/waitress was super nice, prompt and checked on us just the right amount. My first bite of meat was all gristle - I had to spit it back out. I tried again 2 more times before I gave up and focused on the rice but it was undercooked - crunchy in the center. My friend's meal was equally bad. We both left full plates on the table. There were a lot of people in the bar area...we hoped a good sign - nope, not really. Ordered a cup of hot and sour soup. - it came out cold and looked like it came out of a transfer case. Uhhh when you see a food item getting low in a restaurant don't you reorder? Wish I could describe the tea but it was luke warm with a very off taste to it. Not good at all. We were the only people in the restaurant. It took over 20 minutes to get our food delivered after the soup. I got Mongolian beef - the first smell of this made me smile. I thought to myself that maybe the entree will make up for the soup...alas, this was not true. There was some spice or something to it that made the roof of my mouth itch...I had to drench the beef in sweet and sour sauce to be able to eat more then a bite or two...the best thing about it was that it was warm food. The husband got the meat combination with sweet and sour sauce on the side...nothing was tasty about this plate. In fact you had to drench each item in the sweet and sour sauce to make it moist enough to eat. In the 40 or so minutes we were there both the cook and the waitress had to go out for cigarette breaks. We boxed up our food to go so we could throw it away at home - our mistake. We really should have left it. This was a very sad use of $30 bucks. We paid and then left, made it to the car and I am pretty sure one of the bar patrons vomited between their car and mine. We ordered a combo with chicken subgum chow mein. I paid extra for pan fried noodles and wrote in the comments to please just upgrade subgum to soft noodles. When we opened our food we found that they had not sent any chow mein and just sent a dry box of noodles in its place. We ended up paying $2 extra to get less food and plain noodles. We also ordered the ginger beef. I read the description of their dishes carefully to verify there were no mushrooms due to an allergy. When we opened this box there was TONS of mushrooms. The breading was also terrible on the orange chicken, and the chicken just falls out of it. The potstickers are a huge ball of dough, with a tiny bit of filling on the inside. Open on Christmas and way less crowded than Imperial Garden down the road. We waited about 5-10 min to place an order to go. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. A chicken lo mein was like $8 and after having two bowls of it at home, I still had 60% of the take out container left. Nice noodles, pretty quick turnaround (10 min or so?). I'll start out by saying that a friend turned me on to this Restaurant over 15 years ago. We would order their family sized combo meals and always enjoyed the various dishes offered in those combos. However, as the years went by and more information made its way to the Internet. I found out that Mai Wah frequently gets low scores and numerous repeat violations for safe handling of foods from the Clackamas County Health Department. Sadly, despite the fact I enjoyed many meals there over the years. I can now say that I could not see myself dining there again now that I know there's BIG Food saftey issues in the Kitchen. Don't just take my word for it. Go read the inspections yourself. I doubt you'll want to dine there after reading the numerous violations and scores in the 50's and mandatory reinspections. read more

I'm a huge fan of Mongolian Beef, so when I was searching for a new Chinese restaurant and noticed a 1 star review for Mai Wah saying that the Mongolian beef was too spicy and they had to drown it with sweet and sour sauce, I knew I had to order this and taste for myself. Let me tell you, this Mongolian beef is PERFECT! For someone who can actually handle their spice, it was neither too spicy not too bland. It was perfect! It was a little sweet, and a lot of onions to compliment each bite. It's amazing! Definitely going to be my go-to plate for now on! I wonder about this place, I went here for late night pick up and the place had many intoxicated people. Not recommended at night. I will return here during the day time and order in the dining section. For some strange reason they force everyone into the bar area. If any alcohol violations, this place would be it. I will come back in the day and maybe change the rating when I can get some food here. That night I went there, no one was at the counter, apparently some drunk guy was telling me the server was outside with everybody else smoking and hanging out with the drunks. I ordered a beef plate, the kids got sweet and sour chicken, and a friend got another beef plate. To be quite frank, I thought all of the food was awful with the exception of the crab puffs. Beef curry noodle is absolutely delicious! Parking is easy, and spacious. Walked in and had a quiet dim lit atmosphere. Ordered my food in ahead of time and they had it 3 min early! Waiter came over to me as soon as he saw me and went to the kitchen to get my order. As I looked at the decorations a waitress waved and smiled at me as she filled other customers drinks and headed to the kitchen. Drink was a little small, but that's to be expected for the to go size. Food was packed in a thick plastic sealed tub, and was piping hot. Stabled very well together in a paper bag. It used to be my favorite. I think it recently went under new ownership and the food quality has gone down a bit. The Szechuan beef is now more vegetables and way less beef. Flavor wise isn't the same either. The sesame chicken, fried shrimp and egg rolls taste like bursts of vegetable oil instead of the flavor they should. We've also had more than one issue with calling in. When we've called, it rings a few times and then an automated voice says they can't take the call right then. I assume they forgot to hang up a phone or have bad connection issues. But it's very frustrating to have to drive in to order and sit there even more so when you first walk in aren't quickly greeted because the servers are sitting eating dinner or folding napkins. read more

The family has been coming here for years. Like, a lot of years. It's the same Chinese food you'll find everywhere. Salty, greasy food that you know you shouldn't be eating more than every so often. Like other restaurants in strip malls, Mai Wah's atmosphere lacks a certain appeal. It's actually a little on the sad side. When we've eaten in the dining room, we've had the full attention of the staff, so that's a bonus.
