The sushi here was a bit gross. I think the fish was probably not fresh as I am an avid sushi fan and I couldn't bear to finish my spicy tuna maki. It wasn't old enough to make me sick, but was extremely unappetizing. Weirdly, I ordered a soda here and it was flat and syrupy (I don't drink a lot of soda). My husband ordered a Mai tai and he hated it- was all juice and undetectable liquor. We also ordered fried rice for my son- no complaints except it was a small portion. When visiting the Boston area, we have found that sushi restaurants outside Boston pale in comparison to the restaurants in the city. We visited Mai place a few weeks ago and it did not change our opinion. Although the sushi roll options were creative (we may come by again to try some of the other rolls), our party enjoyed the Chinese entrees over the sushi rolls. I played it safe with a Sushi Appetizer and the Mai Special Salmon Maki, and experimented with the Torch Salmon. All were appetizing and of decent quality. So I'd like to give 4.5 stars, but I'm being generous due to COVID I guess. My family and I have been going to Mai Pearl for years, but since moving this place is closer and is basically the same food. To address the mixed reviews, I believe a lot of complaints here had to due with service and portion size for the price. Being that I got take out, the service was fine. As for the portion size, they may be on the smaller side for the price you pay. But the quality of the food is on the high end for Chinese and suburban sushi. So I feel you still get a good value. We got chicken teriyaki, which is a generous portion per stick, even though there were only 4 of them and they were perfectly cooked. The rest of our meal was sushi and was very fresh and well prepared. I really like the dragon ball appetizer, it has this great spicy/sweet sauce. read more

Great service and great food. If I'm ever in Canton, I will be back for the food. I went there for the lunch and it was packed. The portion is really good. Got me full. I got the bento box and when the bill came for two lunch orders was not even $20. The cucumbers that came with the salad is the best I had. I love how thinly sliced it is. My review has to be limited to the sushi since that's all that we had. While I can't comment on the other dishes served, I will say that there were numerous folks that had ordered off the Thai menu. The dishes that went by us look well prepared and were quite generous. If they tasted anything like they looked I'm sure they were quite good. My host for the evening is a regular here and promised a good sushi experience. Everything was well prepared and fresh- the Nigiri portions were quite generous. Prices are about average -which in Boston means quite good- for what I typically expect. They offer a nice selection ala cart, as well as numerous Sushi/sashimi specials, and a why assortment of Maki rolls. I used to order from here (or eat here) twice a month. There is some dish with green beans and a garlic sauce that's devine. (we used to get it as a side dish to go with somethign chickeny) The General Gao's is very good. They offer brown rice. It's a pretty place if you want to eat in, but they deliver to a pretty wide radius and the delivery guys are prompt and friendly. Also, they will keep you CC on file so when you call again from your own number they'll ask you if you want to charge to that, which, in my opinion, was a nice and convenient touch. So the conversation between my friend and I went down like this: Friend: "I'm having my birthday dinner at Mai Place". Me: "Oh, okay, at your house?" Friend: "Noooo it's an actual place in Canton!" Me: "oooooooooooooooh" Despite this little confusion, there were a group of about 7-8 of us gathered for a friend's 21st birthday. I decided to go family style with the friend to be able to try a little bit of everything, and see what Mai Place has to offer. We ended up ordering Singapore Noodles, Mango Chicken and Shrimp, and a Spider Maki. It all turned out to be just okay. The mango chicken and shrimp was probably the best out of what we ordered. Everyone else seemed to enjoy what they ordered, which is a plus. The Midori Sours (Drink of choice!) were yummy and never seems to do me wrong. This restaurant is located in an unassuming place, in a small strip mall along route 138. Upon walking in we were greeted by a very friendly hostess. Our server was one of the most entertaining and friendly servers we have ever encountered! He joked around with us, was patient, and told us that if we did not like something to let him know and he would take care of it. We started with some sushi: unagi (eel), maguro (tuna), and the sweet potato (idaho maki). All of the sushi was fresh and delicious and served very nicely. My wife stuck with the sushi, but I had to try an actual meal! So, I went with the boneless duck with ginger and scallions. I am not claiming to be a duck expert, but I will say that this was one of the greatest duck dishes I have ever experienced. The duck was tender, the skin was crispy, and the sauce was delicious. Everything about this dish was very high quality. While we ate, we actually perused the take-out menu to figure out what we'd like to order the next time we visit (yes, there will be a next time)! The only reason I am giving this restaurant 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their dessert which is clearly not homemade. Obviously Chinese/Japanese restaurants are not know for their desserts, but we decided to try one anyway for fun. We had a mango/raspberry sorbet which was served with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Clearly, everything on their dessert menu is packaged food. At the conclusion of our meal, our fun server came by with hand wipes and he even opened the packages for us! Aside from the dessert experience, this restaurant is fantastic. Was last visit just a bad day? This time around, the sushi was fresh. I had Ika with tobiko topped with Quail egg. I also had this special roll with seafood salad shrimp wrapped with salmon then topped with seaweed salad. That was a very interesting taste. I also had their buffalo wings which I did not think was spicy at all. It was rather sweet. From this visit, I learned why their bar is small - they don't have a full liquor license! So I created a cocktail from what they had which tasted pretty darn good - Smirnoff Cranberry, Pama, Cranberry Juice and Pineapple Juice. read more

The best sushi, japanese, chinese and pad thai in the area! We order takeout twice a week at my office and it's always as good as it gets. The food is dependable and fresh, fresh fresh. Lunch chirashi: salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp, sweet omelet, mackerel, always some unidentifiable whitefish - always 16 pieces of sashimi plus assorted odds n' ends on top of rice with finely shredded daikon decorated with fancily cut lemon or lime or whatever the chef chooses to pretty it up. The shrimp tempura maki is a great standby, never soggy. The lunchtime bento boxes are a great value for the money: $9.50 gets you chicken, steak or salmon teriyaki or pork katsu with yummy miso soup, salad & ginger dressing, 3 pieces of California roll and sesame seed-sprinkled rice, all portioned in a styro container, with the protein foil-wrapped to keep it hot and separate from the rice until you open it up - nice touch.. The place is surprisingly big - it looks tiny from the front but the seating extends into the back. Up front there are a dozen tables and a 5-seat sushi bar, always busy but alreadys ready to take requests, too. Great for a group to have a work lunch or a party after work. The noodles in broth are $7.50, and are the best outside Chinatown: make your own combo from a choice of beef, chicken roast duck (!) shrimp, wontons, or veggie with a choice of 5 different type of noodles. Try the roast duck with udon - a pile of cleavered duck, delicious broth and plenty of udon (great anytime but especially on a fall or winter day) or the shrimp with vermicelli - delicate and deeeelish! The pad thai is a huge portion of either tofu or a ton of chicken with shrimp - perfection - and it serves two easily. Delivery or pickup, it's ready within 15 minutes. it's always hot, yummy and very reasonably priced for what they offer. Plus, the staff is the friendliest you could ask for - they remember regulars and they always aim to please. I love this place! read more

I came here on my sister-in-laws recommendation. She gets take out here for Christmas, so when my husband and I were in the area we decided to stop in for dine-in service. I really wasn't that impressed. I should start my saying that I am a "sushi newbie" (which isn't their fault of course). We ordered the chicken fingers first and they were greasy, flavorless, and there wasn't much chicken in them. Then we decided to split a sushi entree. We kept asking the waitress what the difference between maki (which is what we get on a regular basis) and tamaki which was what the entree we wanted had. She just kept saying " you get tamaki". There was a clear communication barrier so after 5 minutes of saying we jut wanted to know the difference, we figured we'd be adventurous and just give it a go. It didn't take long to come out which was nice; but when it did it was in a cone. That's fine (we knew there was a difference, we just wasn't sure what the difference was). She asked if we were all set, and we just asked how do we eat it. She brought out chopsticks but it wasn't cut so we weren't sure. She actually laughed at us and walked away. We eventually decided to use knives and cut it in pieces but I couldn't believe that she was laughing at us the whole time! It was a really bad experience! That being said the sushi was fresh and the spicy tuna was good. The yellowfin was gross. All I could taste was mayonnaise! I ordered takeout and most of my food was good except for one which was the sweet & sour chicken, and it was the sauce that was all wrong for it to be sweet & sour. The sauce was not good at all it had onions, pineapples, peppers and the sauce was dark. This was first time getting food from Mai Place but I heard they were good so I took the chance. I also ordered the moo shu - veg, crab rangoon and scallion pancakes. Yeah, truly, like no bullshit, I mean five stars. My wife and I went here for lunch because it's right near where she works. So, anyway, I thought, "ok, random sushi place in Canton, alright". And they also have Chinese food on the menu so I didn't know what to expect. So, right off the bat, the service is excellent. The waiter was very attentive and helpful throughout. At the end of our meal, he called us "Tea Fans", because of how much we were talking about the tea, I guess. It was really good. For food, we ended up sticking to the sushi, sashimi and nagiri. I think the best thing was the spicy tuna sashimi. First off, it was SO MUCH fish! And it was interestingly stacked on this huge plate. It was covered in this really unique spicy sauce and it was awesome! The sauce was almost kind of BBQ steak sauce, kind of vinegar/acidic like, fucking CHOICE! And everything was fresh as fuck. Obviously, you'd hope the fish would be, but everything else was too, the cucumber -fresh and crisp, the seaweed - perfect, the rice - it's rice, it was good, the roe (which came in 3 colors, amber, black and red) was everywhere on some of the stuff we ordered and it was quite smart indeed! One other thing, the presentation was excellent. They really do know what in the fuck they're doing there. So, yeah, I was really impressed overall with this place. Personally, this place reminds me of a fake high-end Chinese/Japanese restaurant. They try to dress up the place to look "fancy" but if you at the details - it has many flaws. So I guess this place caters to local folks, who don't go out into Boston much to experience the real authentic cuisines. One random thing that caught my attention was the menu had an awful smell - probably from a dirty rag and soap when they cleaned it; instantly ruined the appetite right off the bat. The entrees were loaded with MSG - not to mention small portions for the price. You are better off going to a Chinese restaurant in Quincy for a better bang for your buck. Although, the service there is okay - considering they can mostly understand English. But you can definitely tell when they are truly acting fake for better tips. Also, that explains why they cater particularly to certain types of people. Just a though. I must say, the hostess(es) is not friendly - she does not have a smile on her face. Mai Place is terrific if you are looking for some solid no muss, no fuss Chinese or Japanese food. The interior is clean but very minimalist - don't come here thinking the decor will transport you to the far reaches of the exotic Orient. Located in a strip mall, the parking lot is unusually tricky to navigate but small enough to ensure close parking to the restaurant. When my husband and I walked into the restaurant, it was completely empty - with the exception of one or two people sitting at the small-sized bar to watch a game. We were immediately greeted and seated by a pleasant hostess, and our waiter soon came along to take our drink orders and offer the menus. Our appetizers came out of the kitchen very quickly - my husband and I split an order of crab rangoon, as well as the scallion pancakes. The rangoon was really great - crispy on the outside with a nice blend of pieces of crab and cream cheese on the inside. The scallion pancakes were bland and slightly soggy but edible (I wouldn't recommend them though). While we were still working on our appetizers, the main courses came out. Although normally I would make this a strike against them, I think the kitchen was pretty slow that night so food was coming out really quickly. My husband's Mongolian Beef portion was large enough to have some leftover for the next day. The beef was well-marinated, good cuts of meat (not a lot of fat), and cooked until tender. Our only complaint was that there were too many onions accompanying the dish. I ordered the Maki Combo dinner and was in heaven. There were six pieces each of tuna, salmon, and California maki and was completely satisfied with the quality of the fish. If the Maki Combo was a good representation of all of their sushi, I would recommend it with any hesitation. With appetizers ranging from the $4-$6 and entrees in the $20 range plus one soda and one alcoholic drink each, our bill came out to about $80 with tips. You dine at a place long enough, you become Norm of Cheers. Well, that's how I feel when I hit Mai Place. The owner, Eddie, is a great guy and very friendly as the other reviewers mentioned. Come in a 2nd time and you'll be treated like a friend. Sushi is good and the rolls are delightful. As Anna mentioned, there are not many choices in the burbs. I recommend any variety of sushi as they are not known for any particular rolls or specialties. As for entrees, go with the pan friend Honk Kong noodle special. I prefer crispy noodles and they do it right. I rarely if ever frequent Chinatown anymore. The last time I was in the city dining in Chinatown was over 4 years ago. I'm not into rats scurring across the floor and the rubbish in the street. It leaves a foul odor in the summer heat. read more

All their rolls are well-made and the fish is always fresh. The other great thing is that the staff is super friendly once they get to know you. Just recently I went for dinner with my fiance and we ordered a few rolls (Valentine Maki is a MUST! SO refreshing, made without rice and wrapped in cucumber slices...delicious), the white tuna tataki (amazing citrus-y, peppery sauce), and some veggie lo-mien (made with super-thing noodles that were more crispy than your average lo mien and not at all greasy...crunchy veggies and great flavor). Last time, I wrote a review on this place a little over a year ago and I'm not sure what happened over the year, but the the couple of times ,I've been there, the most recent being this past Sunday, my boyfriend and I have been disappointed. The service is still great. The staff is attentive and friendly. But the food is becoming dissatisfying. If you read my last review, you would've saw that my favorite dishes were the crab Rangoon and beef teriyaki, the crab Rangoon is still alright, but the beef teriyaki lacks the flavor it once had and was not cooked all the way.
