Wow, what a wonderful little brewery (with fantastic views) tucked into Maui's beautiful Upcountry region. I was only on the island for a few days, to help out at a Yelp Event, so I asked several local Elites for recommendations on must-dos while I was there. Several mentioned Mahalo Aleworks, so I made the lovely drive up on a sunny, breezy Saturday morning. This place definitely lived up to its reputation! With good beer (I tried the Mexican Lager and the Amber), ahhhhmazing views literally across the entire island, live music, and friendly service I can see why Mahalo came so highly recommended. I also loved the overall vibe of the place - light and bright, with a tiny little beer garden and both table and bar seating. If you go, don't miss their loft-like upstairs area, with its small balcony with sweeping views from Kahului to Kihei. The beer? Both were crispy and delish. I was kinda sad that the Mexican lager didn't come with a lime slice, but that's literally my only complaint. read more

On our recent trip to Maui, my group of 9 friends found our way to Mahalo Aleworks to enjoy post-hike beers after spending 3 days backpacking at Haleakalā. We were pleased to be met with an extensive/diverse beer menu with a combination of light beers, ales, dark options, sours, and IPAs that fit the tastes of everyone in the group. The brewery is clean and provides upstairs and downstairs seating, which accommodates all accessibility levels. There was a good diversity of families, groups, and couples present on a Monday afternoon, and felt like a bright, fun place to cruise and enjoy good company. We sat downstairs next to the food cart, Upcountry sausage which also provided fabulous bites. The staff was incredibly attentive, and were helpful in providing a libation for our friend who didn't care for the beer options as well. I am no beer snob, but my two friends who work in the industry were impressed with the brewing equipment, which can be seen from the tasting room area, and cleanliness of the space. We stopped by for beer and lunch after a hike. I love that they have food options here- sausages, burger, tacos and next door there's a pizza place that looks like it opens at 4:30p. If you don't like any of the options there are good trucks to visit across the street. Fyi they don't allow outside food here. The beers were great, my husband liked his brown ale and I loved my pineapple whip sour, so much so we ended up getting crowlers to go of both. The seating area is big and they have outdoor seating as well as upstairs. I felt very welcomed with my baby. The bathrooms are very clean and there's plenty of parking. Tried this place out to this afternoon. We met some people whom we knew and they told us the beer and kombuca they had tried. They told us that they do sampling of the drinks. So we tried the Dad Jokes and that was okay. I guess I'm not much of a fan. I wanted to like it but it was okay as I didn't finish it. Plus the Lilikoi Sour wasn't that great either. I guess I'm more of a easy beer drinker like Bud Light but they don't sell that. The Ambiance of this place was really nice we chose upstairs as to where there was a pretty sweet view. But it was too hot at the time. There were fans going thru out the place. Mahalo Ale works doesn't have a food menu but they do have Upcountry Sausage that you can order from. So for this trip I was taking a Hawaii cruise and on the island of Maui.  There are about 3 breweries on this island, all spread out. Mahalo Aleworks was the newest, and they don't distribute, so I thought this would be the best way to drink beer I can't get anywhere else.  I was so right. The place is new and modern with an open floor plan. And they have an upstairs which has great views, but I don't remember seeing a bar up there. I spent the majority of my time downstairs. THE BEER: Citradillo Hazy Pale Ale 5.2% ABV... quite refreshing and delish Dad Jokes cream ale 4.4 ABV... this is an awesome cream ale Idaho Hazy IPA 6.7% ABV... solid Hazy with West Coast influences Cituation Hazy IPA 6% ABV... this Hazy is one note... but one note like a symphony of one notes... amazing Throwback Midwest IPA 7.1% ABV... this reminded me of a very good Australian IPA All in all, it was a great visit, and if you want food, there is a sausage food truck stationed to the side of the brewery.  There are also other eateries in the general vascinity. read more

Mahalo Aleworks is such a chill place. I like that they had a sampler available and you can choose 4 different beers. We were just killing a very short amount of time so ordered a sampler to quickly try the beers out. They were great! Service was also very friendly and welcoming, I'd definitely come back. A microbrewery in upcountry which if you're from LA feels like the middle of nowhere. If you're within the area, it is worth it depending on your taste buds. I came with my family and there was something for all of us including underage drinkers who loved Maui Jun kombucha. My personal favorite was an English brown ale. If you're not within the area, it's a bit of a drive and you can find other breweries in Kihei or Lahaina that are just as good. There are also sausages for sale within the location which are AMAZING. And right across the street is a food truck park including the popular Thai Mee Up. read more

Mahalo Aleworks is a beautiful new-ish tap room and brewery located in Pukalani that features a selection of beers thoughtfully brewed, aged, and blended right here on Maui. While I don't really drink beer, I can appreciate their efforts in incorporating hyper-local, fresh ingredients sourced from local farms and orchards and their very own small orchard just down the road. They grow over 20 varieties of organic fruit and various herbs and spices that can be utilized in their beers. It comes at a premium, I'm sure, but I am all for supporting local. They are also a fully solar brewery, send their spent grains to local farmers, and employ other methods in an effort to be more sustainable. They are located at the Kula Malu Town Center and offer a rotating menu of craft beers, wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and locally made snacks. You can also order delicious sausages and food from Upcountry Sausage Company (on their outdoor lanai) or order takeout from Marlow (next door). Both food outlets are solid choices. Lastly, they have some fun merch along with other locally made products available along the wall next to the bathroom which would make for nice gifts. As for drinks, I usually opt for their hard kombucha or a glass of white wine and like to enjoy it upstairs, especially on their outdoor patio which boasts beautiful bicoastal views. My favorite time to be here is during sunset. What's better than watching the sky turn various colors as the sun drops behind the West Maui Mountains -- all while sipping on your beverage of choice? It's absolutely gorgeous and makes for a great date night! The brewery is also perfect for get togethers with large groups as there are a ton of seating options here, including leather couches upstairs and even a room with a long, family-style table that can be made private. Overall, I love the vibe at the brewery -- the simple, clean look of the wooden, industrial style decor. As a beer guy, there's nothing more fun than visiting a new brewery for the first time. Mahalo Aleworks just celebrated their second anniversary, but because of the pandemic it was just too difficult to get here. I was thankful for a Maui daytrip and made sure this was one of the first places on our adventure. Located in a new shopping center area in Kula and just a quick drive from Makawao, they have plenty of free parking in the lot and on the little center streets. It's a brand new building with modern style. The brewery is two stories: the ground floor is the entrances with open air garage doors. Here you'll find a lot of seating in small and large tables, plus an outdoor wooden seating area and the in-house Upcountry Sausages (see dedicated review). It is also here you'll find the bar area and cashier, plus the brewery itself around to the side. They had live music during our visit. Behind the bar is a draft wine machine, beer menu above styled like an airport flight board with flipping letters, a refrigerator filled with crowlers ready to take home and a wall of merchandise with their distinctive logo - shirts, hats, stickers, journals, bottle openers, pins, and magnets. Upstairs is worthwhile to check out even if you're enjoying your beer downstairs. This brewery probably has the most beautiful view of any in Hawaii, with clear sight to the valley and ocean below. Beer photos standout against the blue sky. They have table, sofa/chair, and outdoor bar seating up here too. Water bottle filling stations are upstairs and down; great for filling those reusable bottles to stay hydrated on your adventure. The beer was excellent; much better directly from the tap. They have a diverse array of styles - hazy IPAs, amber ales, farmhouse/saisons, ciders, fruit beers, and West Coast IPAs. They have 12 taps; I opted for flights to try a bunch and ended up trying eight things (leaving styles I don't enjoy for another time). Prices are reasonable for the quality. If you're a beer fan on Maui, it's worth the time and drive to visit. read more

I've always had great experiences here in the past, but unfortunately, the night of June 18th was completely different. The service we received was shockingly rude, condescending, and entirely lacking in aloha. It was disappointing and honestly degrading -- not at all the spirit of Maui that we know and love. There is a small parking structure but it does get packed quick. They have two floors of seating, we decided to go upstairs for a nice view. I enjoyed two of their IPAs (Mckenzie and Citco) and even picked up a crowler of stout to drink later (it was delicious). I noticed Mahalo Aleworks while having dinner at neighboring Marlow a year ago. What caught my eye were the balconies on the second level as I love outdoor seating, more-so with a view. ATMOSPHERE: Located in the Kulamalu Town Center, the two level, open-air brewery and bar offers a mix of seating arrangements including picnic tables, low tops and counter-level stools on their gorgeous balconies, two of them with killer views of central Maui and the West Maui Mountains. Decor is diddly but the setup feels like you're in someone's home. Restrooms are single-stall so do expect a wait at times. RESERVATIONS: Not available. PARKING: Lots of free private and street parking available. MENU: Beer, wine and bubbly. No food but the Upcountry Sausage Company cart is conveniently located on their first level lanai (serving burgers, tacos & gourmet hot dogs), and you may also order from neighboring restaurant, Marlow (pizzas), and bring it in. Other food trucks are within walking distance but are banned from entering. BEVERAGE: I know they're a brewery, but my beer-drinking days are long gone. I'll still have a brewski every now and then, but not tonight. I partook in one of their white wine blends ($10/glass) and came mainly for the views and company. FOOD: I got one of the hot dogs from the Upcountry Sausage Co.. See my review on their dedicated Yelp page. SERVICE: Counter service only, but they do come around to clear your dirties. Open a tab or pay as you go. Love that option, especially if you're with a group and want separate checks. Everyone was friendly. I know I am prone to hyperbole, and I just want you to know: I'm working on it. OK, this is probably my favorite brewery on the islands. Do they have some of the best ambiance? Yes. Do they have a unique location? Up in the mountains rather than down by the coast? Also: yes. Do they have friendly and beautiful people serving you? Yes. But none of those are why it's my favorite brewery. It's all about the beer. The beer here is innovative, solid, and the flavors are fresh and BRIGHT! If I could use only one adjective to describe it, it would be just that: bright. What do I mean? I mean the hop flavors in these beers are fresh and present in a way that they just aren't at many breweries. I love how even their cream ales and pale ales have a satisfying, crispy, fruit-salady bite from the hops. It's truly great stuff! A pale ale simply titled "Crispy Girl" was easily my favorite. It's a pale ale, which is not my favorite style. However, this was such a fresh take on a classic style that I couldn't ignore it. It smelled like you were being rolled up into a hop bale. Juicy fresh terpenes smack you in the face before you even put your mouth close to the glass. Speaking of titles, I love all the beer names here. They all are simple and mysterious. However, if you're a homebrewer, you will quickly realize that the names are actually very descriptive and are almost always thinly-veiled references to the hops/yeasts/processes used to make these ales. Definitely give them a shot! My only negative: you are only allowed to bring food in here from two pre-approved places (in an area with a food cart village just walking distance away). One is a sausage shack, the other is a really bougie (but tasty) pizza place. read more

Great spot for drinks and watching the sunset from the balcony! Super modern, laid-back brewery with plenty of parking space and in a central location right in the middle of the island. They have a good selection of beers on tap to include wheats, IPA's, gose, saison, etc. that rotate and a self-serve water dispenser on each floor which is pretty cool to see. You can get food next door at Marlow the Italian pizza restaurant, which was also really good, and I think they had some food trucks close by. read more

Look, there's "family friendly" and there's Romper Room. This place on a Friday night is only missing the jumping castle... drunk 40-something dads getting noisy to the less-than-average house band while restless housewives let their toddlers run rampant throughout the space....honestly one that has so much potential but falls so flat. And the service? Bitchy...disinterested....rude. I've been here on a non-Romper Room day and got the same angry emo girl vibe from behind the counter. When your beers are this mediocre, the only thing that will draw people back is the vibe...and this place ain't got it. Nobody wanted LA boujie transplanted to upcountry Maui, but that's exactly what this place has delivered. After spending the morning at Haleakala National Park, we stopped at Mahalo Aleworks for a couple of drinks and to eat lunch. This is the coolest location for a brewery! The upstairs seating area has an amazing view to enjoy from either inside their spacious room, or one of the balconies. Downstairs is really nice too, and they have really cool merch, as well as some other local gift items for sale. They have their own beers, as well as wine available. The bartender who was working when we were there was super friendly. They have a sausage, food truck on site, and they are right next to a pizza restaurant that you can also order from and bring in. We did order pizza, and it was great! If we return to Maui, we will definitely be back here because it is a great spot to hang out! read more

Great beer and better views! Upcountry is a bit off the tourist track but this spot and many others are worth the detour. The menu is not small or crowded. They 12'ish beers on tape and a selection of wines available. The Vienna turned out to be the family favorite. Crisp, clear and easy it was a perfect match for the weather and view from the second story lounge with views of the the mountains and ocean. Man this is a great place to have a drink. There is food available onsite. BYOF is discouraged to support the eateries nearby. Don't worry between the sausage company and Marlow next door you will not be disappointed or hungry. Long drive from the west side but we had overseas guests who are keen on breweries, plus we have heard/read so much about this brewery we had to try it out! We were surprised it is in the middle of a shopping area and that the views are over a car park, but you do have a good view of the middle of the island in the distance. Service was professional but a little unfriendly, but it didn't put us off. Flight of beer, a ginger beer and a cold pressed coffee were ordered and enjoyed appropriately. The flight was a great hit providing an over view of the beers available and their differences. The sausage cart wasn't open and the restaurant next door was pricey so we drank up then walked to the food truck park across the road for lunch which offered a great selections of foods, especially the pizza truck which was very cheap! Pity you cant take food truck cart food in with you! Nice but not as nice as the Kihei Maui Brewery. read more

We were coming back from MauiWine and look for a place to stop after winding roads and decided to take a break at Mahalo Aleworks. The brewery is nice and open and had a sausage food cart on the side offering food. It looks like the place is two floors though I didn't venture up the stairs to look at the second floor. There are a decent amount of beer options and though they don't sell cans, you can have them fill a crowler (32 oz) to take to go. They also do beer flights if you're looking to try some out. I had the Idaho, a hazy IPA which was good but apparently a friend had the pineapple sour with emphasis on the sour. So if you're not into that maybe try something else. read more

My low rating is based solely off service. I was really disappointed here. Sad. Showed up on a Monday afternoon and there was 1 couple, and 1 guy in the place. 2 young girls behind the bar. Ordered my drink, was served and then completely ignored. The single guy was chatted with extensively until he left but after that the two girls just started chatting. Finished my drink and kept waiting. I finally got to the point where I was holding my empty glass inside down in the air and it still took a couple minutes for them to figure it out. I ordered my next beer, got it and they went right back to talking. Finished the beer and was out. Very sad experience. Let's talk about the beers. Started with the blonde and it was light, crisp, very bright in color, and refreshing on a humid day. The IPA was just the right balance of bold and bitter but not overwhelming. The floral notes were amazing. The venue looked cool. Did not realize there was an entire second floor to check out, that would have been cool but even relaxing downstairs was nice. There's no comparison between this place and the other beer company on Maui. The views, too, need to be commented on. The beer was average, but the views were great! This was my first stop upon arriving in Maui. My friends and I got pizzas to go from next door at Marlo's (get the prosciutto and arugula), then grabbed a table upstairs. There was live music on the main level and it was very loud - too loud for having conversations. You'll definitely be fighting over seats on their small outdoor patio as there are just a few stools available. You can still enjoy the view from inside though. I had the Maui mango wheat and it was good, but nothing too memorable. I wish they'd had a sour or two on their menu. Beer prices, like everything else, are definitely higher here than on the mainland. The parking lot is pretty tight, so perhaps look at other spots along the road in the strip mall area it's in. read more

After my wife's retail therapy day in Kahului, my therapy was to stop here. So glad we did - wonderful location just past the turn off for Haleakalā. Great selection of tasty beers - the unfiltered Hefe was wonderful as was the Festbier. Relaxing, low key, and just delightful. The Upcountry Sausage Co grill right outside on the patio was excellent as well - grab the smashburger or the Ragin Cajun sausage. Delicious!
