I had great food here 3 years ago...not anymore. I will say this: service was above excellent and our waitress was friendly, helpful, unhurried (in the good way) and professional. The food was overall pretty terrible and I regret not just sticking to pizza. The Greek salad was fresh but mediocre... Mussels arrived second, and a week later I am still regretting not sending back. Three of them (out of about a dozen) were bad, with cracked shells and all. The broth they came with was an acidic, flavorless court-bouillon and the cheap cooking wine was the main thing that shone through. Really bummed about the mussels. The special pizza of the evening came out and was pretty delicious, (fontina mushroom spinach etc). It was burned on one side and undercooked on the other, and parts of the crust were tough and overworked, but altogether it was well topped, high quality, tasty and kind of rustic and what I expected. If I were ever in Greenfield on a Monday night again, I'd probably get Korean takeout, , but if I came back to Magpie I'd sit bar side for better ambiance, and stick to the pizza. read more

We just had our wedding rehearsal dinner here and they were amazing, super accommodating. I worked with the owner ahead of time and she made sure everything was prepared and set up for our arrival. Magpie is a good gourmet pizza restaurant with a charming decor, but the reservation and seating management need some serious work. Our party of 4 waited 1 hour and 15 minutes to be seated. We would have made a reservation, but they only allow reservations for parties of 6 or more. This meant that many smaller parties had long waits. We called ahead to get on the waiting list, and when we arrived, we were told we were next on the list. BUT, we still had to wait 45 minutes to be seated. Recommendation: either have reservations for everyone, or no one. Otherwise, parties end up waiting, and parties of 6 or more monopolize the small number of tables. On the food, it was good, but I found the pizza toppings a bit scanty. They should study Arise in Amherst, MA, an excellent gourmet pizza shop with reservations! read more

We came on a Monday night with a table of 6. The place was crowded, which looked promising. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. It was a mixed affair. For apps we had a few bread plates and some fried eggplant. the eggplant was OK, not soggy, not bitter, but also almost devoid of flavor. It was served with an equally flavorless romanesco. I guess that is the nature of eggplant, but I would have expected something out of the sauce. The bread plates were nice. The goat cheese was delicious as was the salt and oil combo with the bread. For entrees, I had a oven roasted Caesar salad. Perhaps I'm out of the loop, but I understand all Caesar salads to have dressing. My salad was exactly a head of romaine lettuce, covered in B+ parmesan, cooked in the oven until the top leaves burnt. There were 6 granite like crouton as well. solid D. My party had a few different dishes, all of which were enjoyed including the potato pizza and the ricotta mac and cheese. The entire business is slow: kitchen, bar, waitstaff The kitchen is open to the dining room. While waiting for our food I watched the kitchen staff work. They didn't seem to move well as a team and I could see no obvious chef. I would give it 3.5 stars, but that isn't how yelp works. I would give it four stars if the menu had more variety (so much arugula), if a salad as straight forward as a Caesar wasn't an oven roasted head of romaine, and if things had been faster. i've come here occasionally over many years. the good news: they've put up acoustic panels, so the serious noise problem is abated. the bad news: unless you stick with the pizza, i'll echo another reviewer: the execution greatly exceeds the prose on everything. it all Sounds promising, but is underwhelming on the plate. tonight i had pasta bolognese, and it arrived with the linguini on top burnt to a crisp, like, actually Crunchy as if it just came out of a box. i've never seen anything quite so bizarre, so i asked about it and was told that it was because it's cooked in the wood-fired oven!!!! in fairness, i was offered to have it redone, but (a) was also told that the only way they could cook things was in the oven (huh?!?) so the result was unlikely to be different, and (b) we'd already waited a long time. again, pizza is the specialty, and i've never seen anyone get a bad pizza here. and as i said, the noise problem, which was the main ambience issue is gone. so, given those caveats, it's still a good place to eat. read more

Called ahead for takeout on a Thursday night. Only took about 25 mins. We got two pizzas: margherita and potato & garlic. Crust was great on both but the margherita was lacking a little in flavor, could have used some garlic. We usually stop in Greenfield on our way up VT, would probably stop here again. read more

I ate dinner last night at Magpie--our waitress was attentive, well-informed, and efficient. She recommended an evening special-- lamb, medium- rare with a celery root slaw and a minted spring pea purée. Everything on the plate was amazing! The lamb was top quality and cooked expertly, the stone ground mustard laced slaw was earthy and zesty, and the minted pea purée heavenly. Far exceeded my expectations for a pizza place! read more

Ate here several times when I lived in the area. I love Hope and Olive, and was thrilled to learn they had opened a pizza place. The pizza is great, however, the one dish I still dream about YEARS after having it, was a late summer special of creamed corn. It was so good, my friends and I ordered a second serving. I really enjoy coming here. Their meatball appetizer is sooooooooooooooo good. It goes well with a salad or pizza. I like to order off their specials menu. Once I had the best salad I've ever had- it contained lightly pickled grapes, bacon crumbles (thick bacon!) and feta. It was perfectly dressed and I was in shock at how delicious it was. Sadly, this was just a daily special. I once got a meatball pizza and the meat was a little dried out. I'd recommend getting the meatballs separately and ordering a different type of pizza. I've had the white veggie one (so good) and Margherita (also so good). They have a nice cocktail and beer selection. Servers are super nice. The desserts I've had were rich and yummy- I think I had some sort of chocolate mousse. Even my sweets hating boyfriend enjoyed it. I enjoy the ambiance here as well. It's a cozy place to eat, but can get busy at peak times. I forget what day they are closed... Maybe Tuesdays? I've forgotten a few times and showed up anyway, only to meet a locked door. I really loved this place. The service was very good. The atmosphere nice enough. The heirloom tomato salad special, just perfect. The grilled caesar salad; really, really loved that so very much. The pizzas we tried; fantastic. At first I wasn't sure about the crust; I usually like thinner....but pretty soon I found myself falling head-over-heals for this crust! Tonight, my partner and I decided to check out Magpie. We had both had great experiences with Hope and Olive, but had yet to check out this location. We ordered the Bread with Honey Butter, Nothing special, and should probably come with the meal, instead of costing 4$. We also got the olive sampler, and that may have saved the meal, being the only thing we ordered that contained any flavor at all. We also got the Fire Roasted Caesar Salad. It was very bland, and lacked the proper acidity to deal with the anchovy flavor. We then got the House made Sausage and broccoli rabe pizza. This contained no flavor at all. The sausage was bland with only mild hints of fennel and herbs, and no salt at all. The crust was the only decent thing about this pizza, and was quite good, but the tomatoes were bland, the cheese was bland, and the broccoli rabe was not properly dried after sweating, and made the crust soggy. It was lacking the herbs and spices I would expect from italian cuisine. I may try to go back sometime......... maybe. read more

Four of us had dinner at Magpie tonight. It was less than stellar. One pasta dish had spaghetti that was crusty (the manager was fabulous and ensured that the dish was replaced as well as a free dessert for the table), the Mac and cheese was soupy with glops of cheese and little flavor, a pizza had burnt crust on one side and grit in the wild mushrooms. Too many things wrong for any restaurant. Again, the manager was wonderful, but we were not about to send three dishes back to the kitchen. Very disappointing. read more

We have been to Magpie's several times. The pizza is great and the service is great. The pizza crust is crisp and the toppings are so much better than you get at most restaurants--especially the mushrooms. You don't get these mushrooms at Domino's or even the other local pizza restaurants in Greenfield. The very best thing we had at Magpie's was the braised mixed greens with garlic and chili sauce. It was a HUGE dish of greens for only &3.00, and it was delicious. Do not do take-out here because it is a thin crust pizza, and it gets soggy really fast! read more

It was okay at best. I've been to tons of wood fired pizza places and this place is lacking the flavor at lot of the others have. The two times I dined there the tables and surrounding are both looked like they could have been cleaned better (empty glasses sitting around, a couple dirty plates just left here and there, simple house keeping) and the staff could have been more attentive. Terrible service. I've been here eight times and yesterday was the worse. Waited at bar for 15 minutes before bartender acknowledged us. Was to busy waiting on a table next to bar. Also telling friend were there was an open seat. Was seated at table and waite staff was hanging around kitchen or were bringing water to tables. We waited 15 minutes no one came to ask for drinks or ask our order. Got up and left. Very poorly managed waite staff. Had plenty on staff for little resturant. Not going back. read more

This was our first time to Magpie's and I have to say my husband and I were both disappointed. We ordered the prosciutto, chicken and spinach pizza. The pizza was ok but the toppings were sparse and was mostly cheese. My husband thought it was bland. I ordered a $9 Caesar salad for my daughter and I to share. It was a good sized salad and plenty for two people to share as a side. My complaint is that I had to pick through lettuce that looked old and wilted, I bit into a few pieces of lettuce that apparently were not washed very well, and the Caesar dressing looked curdled and was separating(it just didn't look appetizing). I don't think we will be returning to Magpie's. We had high hopes but were disappointed. read more

Hope and Olive was closed so we decided to try Magpie. Terrible food and service was subpar. We started off with bread, grilled veggies, and goats cheese. The only thing impressive was there local goat cheese. The veggies were bland. Next we had a balsamic peach special and the prochutto made it beyond salty. Next came our sausage pizza. Once again bland, crust was burnt, and the dough was undercooked. And to finish it off, the baked chicken breast arrived... once again prochutto covered. Chicken was undercooked, and what ever came with it- i think mashed squash- was bland also. To make things even worse, our sever brought us one refill of water the whole time. Very disappointed in the service and product served. The near five star review i saw going in prior was far from what we experienced. read more

We've been to Magpie's a number of times and am always impressed. Their pizza brings something different to Greenfield, (thin, crispy crust vs greasy, thick crust Greek pizza) and is definitely worth the extra money. Always good service even though they are always busy whether it's a Weds or Sat. (A plus for their reputation). We always try new things and some are hit or miss but this is depending on your tastes and preferences in my opinion, not necessarily a reflection on the quality (which is always great!) read more

I want to like Magpie- I want there to be cool restaurants in Greenfield. The staff is always so friendly and competent, the room is lively and welcoming. And I've had pretty good pizza and salads, sometimes great pizza. But I've concluded that perhaps it is best to stick with those pizzas. At a recent visit, I ordered a special, the tortellini with what I think was described as a green pea and asparagus pesto, or tortellini with green peas and asparagus- I'm not sure what the menu said, but it wasn't soup. When it was delivered to me, it was a bowl of what looked like about two handfuls of tortellini floating (!!!) in a thin, green broth? soup? with uncooked chopped asparagus and green peas floating on top. There was a good two cups of liquid. No one brought a spoon. I was honestly perplexed. I fished out the tortellini with a fork- the tortellini were tasty enough, but they had that half hot/ half cold microwave mistake thing you get sometimes. It was a busy weekend night, maybe something was going on? They make good pizza. Get the pizza! read more

After the rave reviews, we went; admittedly on a Saturday evening so the place was packed. Service was OK, but because everyone was pitching in, we were never sure who was serving us. Ordered the sausage and broccoli rabe pizza which was OK too, but nothing to write home about. The tomatoes were sweet and delicious, but the rest of the toppings didn't hold up as well. I don't mind char on the crust, but the crust should be crisp...it was extremely difficult to cut, even with a knife. And really ... if you are going to charge for tapwater, you should let folks know when you ask if the customer wants water. Even west of the 100th, even during a drought, tapwater is free if you ask for it. Probably will not go again ... not bad, just not something for our infrequent special nites out. read more

Based on the reviews on Yelp, and from friends, my husband and I decided to give Magpie another chance. Bad idea!! The service here is beyond poor--very slow, very inattentive, dressed like aging hippies (really-clogs and skirts!). The pizza is mediocre-we had a pizza margherita--scorched crust, burnt basil, very stingy on the cheese. Now we have tried this place twice-and Magpie could not PAY us to come back. We live a few towns over and came to magpie a few years ago and thought it was delightful- the prosciutto wrapped pears appetizer with truffle oil was fabulous and our meal was great. You can imagine out profound dissapointment when we had dinner on Saturday night( dec28) and found things under and over cooked carelessly assembled and very poor overall. The wait staff is very nice- and my drink was very good and we ordered the PI muscles as an appetizer - good. (The wonderful pear appetizer was no longer on the menu sadly) That was the exception to a VERY unexceptional at best and often really bad meal. They brought a starter dish of crudités that were just raw celery, fennel and watermelon beats sliced- completely uninteresting- no vinegar or seasoning or anything. No bread with it. But that was complimentary - so you can't really complain- it wasn't good but oh well. ( I'd skip completely it if I were them) We ordered the the steak tip and scallop special and they were overdone and SO tough. The sides, roasted cauliflower were charred uncooked broken bits scattered around the plates really carelessly -accompanied buy the creamed swish chard( really bad and spread a watery juice over th whole plate that the steak and scallops were just swimming in). The rudebega fries where even worse than the other two side dishes-both underdone and chared on the edges- no seasoning at all that I could taste- and bitter, late season root veggies badley prepared. We did inform the waitress - who was very nice- about the overdone meat and the undercooked veg and the kitchen did agree that they weren't prepared well and they included a dessert pizza with blood oranges and honey and mascarpone on the house. It was a nice gesture but it was not a good pizza. The was no noticeable marscapone and it was super duper dry. ( we has unbelievable dessert pizza in Italy so we know how good dessert pizza really should taste). We are really hearty supporters of our wonderful local businesses- we want so much for this place to thrive- for long into the future. The meal we had after it first opened was so much more wonderful and carful -one of the reasons for going into detail here is not to just criticize but to really let them know that even though they have a very crowded place most nights- several of the main dishes that they were featuring we're not good. I hope that this will connect and they will make the changes needed to have really special specials. And so far as those god awful redubega fries.... They would tax even the most faithful root vegetable lovers read more
