We were in Alpine in August for my niece's graduation and had breakfast at Magoo's. As Ben says below, this is definitely a spot for locals. The waitresses knew most of the patrons by name, and all the men wore cowboy hats! I loved the huevos rancheros. The portion was huge and the beans were quite spicy. As a native Texan, I have been eating Mexican food all my life and the hotter the better, so I am always impressed when a place makes something that I think is hot. Service was exemplary, and the prices were very reasonable. This will be our go-to spot for all our future visits to Alpine. I hope my niece finds a long and useful career there so we can keep coming back. read more

I've been in Alpine two days thus far, and I can't really figure it out here; when the Mister walk into places, we see plenty of locals. But the town itself seems dead when we drive around. Things that seem like they should be open aren't, and places named for a blind cartoon character serve Mexican food. I don't get it. Nevertheless, we found Magoo's after trying to hit La Trattoria for breakfast, only to be rebuffed by a 'Sorry, We're Closed' sign. Every car in town seemed parked at Magoo's, so we took the hint and pulled in. It's self-seating, and seemed pretty busy, but the bussers, etc. were quick to clear off tables. It's all communal seating, too, meaning you'll likely be at a table with strangers (at least, if you arrive as a twosome, as the Mister and I did). I settled on a the oddly named Magooito Burrito -- basically a breakfast taco w/ sausage, eggs, cheese, potatoes and bacon. The Mister got the same, along w/ a side of biscuits and gravy. Our orange juice tasted like the frozen variety, and someone didn't use enough water -- it was almost too sweet. Still, my Magooito was large and satisfying, and had plenty of everything. The Mister's, however, was missing bacon, which was more than annoying -- you don't mess w/ a man's bacon. The biscuits were fluffy and the gravy wasn't bad, though it oddly had chunk of pre-pressed sausage and a small pool of grease on top when it arrived. Relative to other places we've eaten in Alpine, though, I'm giving three stars -- the service was decent, the food was decent and the place was clean. I didn't see not one fly buzzing around (which, sad to say, hasn't been the case anywhere else). read more

Came for lunch on a Monday. Not impressed. The burger was great, but the French fries were under cooked even though they appeared over cooked. Dirty oil....I assume. The green enchiladas did not impress either. Uncooked corn tortillas stuffed with unflavored chicken then drenched in green sauce with a little cheese and onions sprinkled on top. No salsa and chips and they were not on the menu although other tables had them. read more

This is one of those hole in the wall places that has great food. The services are amazing we were trying to decide between Asada burrito and a Verde our server said hold on one second and got us a sample of each..how sweet!! The parking is a little crazy they don't have enough parking for the place the parking lot was full but hardly anybody inside so I am guessing the 5 employees must park in the spot to. That takes up over half the parking so what I'm saying don't be fooled by the parking lot .make sure you come in and try that Verde burrito. On our cross-country road trip, we stopped in the area to try to get a glimpse of the Marfa Lights. It rained all night, so that never happened, and alone in west Texas, for lunch the next day we ended up at Magoo's. It seems to be an Alpine institution, and indeed this is definitely a locals' spot. Super casual with a bunch of tables, with a lively energy--it seems like everyone knows each other. We didn't feel too out of place though, and definitely appreciated the small yet diverse menu and affordable prices. We both got the hamburger steak with brown gravy and grilled onions. Delicious. Food took some time, and service wasn't the friendliest, but it's definitely a good choice if you're in the area. read more

Loved my experience here. Food was great, service was hustling, which was a nice change. They should def consider expanding in the drive thru slab to be a bigger kitchen and more seating. Drive-thrus are supposed to be grab and go operations. If the cashier has to tell someone to drive back through in 40 minutes to get there food, kindof defeats the purpose. Quality West Texas diner fare in a locals' atmosphere. Good: coffee, cheeseburgers, breakfast. Needs improvement: French fries. In two visits and an attempted third, we were met with West Texas hospitality. That is to say, friendly but not in an over-the-top way. As another Yelper said, the posted closing time is a suggestion. Be early. The burgers came highly recommended, and did not disappoint. Homemade quality. The French fries were like all the others we've found in West Texas: not even close to crisp. That just seems to be how they're done out here. Breakfast is a strong suit. From the No. 1 plate to huevos ranchero (sic) everything is tasty. Also homemade quality. Definitely try the pancakes. We're here in Alpine for a week, and I'm going back to Magoo's for lunch again. Finding food in Alpine on a Saturday was hard! We arrived around 2 and every place we went in to was closing down and would not be open again until dinner. This place was the third place we tried. There was a neon sign that said they were "Open" and cars were out front. We took our two kids, two diaper bags, and all the stuff out and went in and they were closed too! They were not friendly or nice about it. It is just as well. They were cleaning up the lunch rush but the place looked like a mess. We ended up eating at McDonald's and were glad to have it. This place for starters has no sign at all, until you are a foot from the door and see the 8 1/2 x 11. The food was terrible and quite expensive for being breakfast. My tasteless omelette was 10.25. My husband's breakfast was equally blah. Coffee was 1/3 strength. Not recommended. read more

We had a basic breakfast- #1 and #2. Both breakfast plates were delicious. Service was quick and everyone is helpful and friendly. My boyfriend and I said that we were visiting and we were given a guide book. That's more than we got at the place we were staying in Marfa. Growing up in San Antonio I thought I knew good Mexican food. Boy was I wrong. MAGOO'S is the best homemade, authentic, delicious Mexican food I've ever had. Menudo (only available weekends), Huevos Rancheros, and the Crispy chicken tacos are awesome!! Unlike south tex-Mexican food, the food here isn't greasy and tastes fresh. Magoo's is a small, local hole-in-the-wall type place where we stopped for breakfast on a Sunday morning and found smiling, friendly faces, a clean (albeit bare-bones) type atmosphere with some of the most delicious breakfast food we have tasted in a while. My husband enjoyed breakfast taco w/chorizo & egg. Chorizo was spicy (but not too), the salsa offered added just the right kick and he said it was yummy! Coffee was hot and we saw them brew at least 2 new pots while we ate, so you know it's fresh. I ordered the biscuits w/sausage gravy and an egg on the side. My 2 fluffy biscuits came w/a whole cup of steamy gravy to add as I chose and the egg was made just as I had ordered. Don't miss this place. read more

This place was a huge disappointment. Ordered scrambled eggs, potatoes and a biscuit for breakfast. Eggs were more white than yellow and dried beyond belief. Potatoes were undercooked, lacked any sort of flavor and were not even crispy. The biscuit was burned on the bottom and dry and not even flaky like one would hope. Coffee was also bland. read more
