This is one of those reviews, where you're not sure you want to divulge the information because you snottily don't want someone to have the same goodies as you (but I'm working through that selfishness people). JEROME CAN DO HAIR YALL!!!!! YAAASSSSSSSS! YAAASSSSSSS! Let me tell you, I woke up this morning a BRAND NEW WOMAN! Full thick hair, bounce, shine, style...that hair did everything but put my celebrity crush in bed next to me...and if I got my ass to CA, it could possibly do that too! I was super elated when I found an amazing eyebrow stylist...but now I have the "it" factor in the hair category, an amazing artist (hair is a true art). I'm not just looking for pretty hair. I want healthy, strong, and gorgeous hair. I can check that off the list. 2015...watch out!!!! So, run your happy asses to Magid's Hair Studio and ask for Jerome! ---------------------- Okay there are so many conflicting views on here about this Salon. So as a long time client that has used three different stylists, let me give you my honest feedback: After 7 years, this salon is far from perfect and at times I've strayed away to visit other stylist to see if I could find better. The reason that I've comeback time and time again is because as a natural head, I needed long lasting results and for the most part I got that here. Magid aka "Magic": He's the owner and he was the very first stylist I went to prior to his current location. I believe that he's good at his craft for basic blow outs. Joseph (the brother): I love his personality, but more so, he is really talented with a flat iron. He listens to his clients and he cares about what they want. The case majority of photos on my yelp are blowouts from him! I ended up being Joseph's client for the last 5+ years. Jerome: On a recommendation from Joseph, I wanted more creativity with my natural hair. My hair had finally reached a really great length and constant blowouts for me were not a way of necessarily retaining the length. I really love Jerome's capability and understanding with natural hair. I feel so confident about having more control of my hair shed, my product knowledge, and making sure that at the end of the day I have the healthiest head of hair possible. He's now my main stylist and I'm really happy. The Cons: - I personally don't think this is the type of salon you come to for custom color or for any other style aside from a simple blow out. - if you want the latest cut, I don't think it's going to be here either. They really just specialize in natural hair. It's the bulk of their business. While individual stylists do varying degrees of stuff, recognize the overall capabilities of the salon. - I don't get perms/relaxers or any color from here. Wait actually once I did get color, but it was minimal and I honestly can't recall, but I was satisfied with the results. Honestly, I'd only go to a place that I KNEW specialized in it or did a significant amount of color in a week. - the one barber they have on staff is RUDE and HONORARY. He doesn't know how to respect women or keep a professional demeanor around clients. I literally took a star off, because I choose off days to avoid this man! This is a family owned business. The brothers are really great and they're kind. Advice: use sound judgement when deciding to get chemicals put in your head from a salon that has more business doing the opposite. You can expect to be in and out on time. The location is good and there's plenty of paid parking. Hair is a really finicky thing. Ask all the right questions before you agree to getting anything done. read more

It's been so long since I've been on yelp, that I forgot to come back and send an update to this review. I haven't been going to him since April 2010. Magid is ridiculous. Since he got his new shop, he became extremely arrogant. He cut my hair completely uneven during a lunchtime appointment, and when I got back to the office, I noticed it, and so did my colleagues. So I called to go back in for a fix later that evening, and when I got there, he never admitted to the fact that the cut was a butchered mess, and offered to fix it by cutting it another inch to even it out. Heck NO!! So, as I was a client for about a year, I expected some sort of consolation, like a discounted or free next visit. Instead, he offered me back the $10 for the "cut," and I just balled it up and left it on his desk. Everyone in the salon saw the exchange, and even his stylists saw that the cut was fudged up and just shook their heads. I haven't been back since. He's ridic. I've since then found a much better downtown lunchtime salon, and my hair has never been healthier. read more

I'm a fan of Madgids for sure!! I am transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. After I took my sew in out, my hair was pretty weak and damaged. I was worried that he wouldn't know what to do with it, especially because it was already short and I wanted to wear it straightened. Well guess what, homeboy did know what to do! He cut me down pretty short and then got my hair the straightest its ever been! I've been back once since and had a great experience. read more

I really didn't want to write a review but I am so upset about my hair cut. I even gave Magid a second chance after his first cut where I had to go back because he cut my hair so uneven that i couldn't take it. It was a bob where the front was longer then the back but apparently so was the left side from the right. When I drove all the way back downtown to fix it he laughed at me and said it wasn't that bad but proceeded to take over 2 inches off the left side to even it out. I still liked how he had straightened my hair and really enjoyed the lady who washes your hair so I tried again. I admit I wasn't very specific but I did say I wanted my hair shorter but still long enough in the back and I wanted to keep it angled. He said "I got it" very confidently so I trusted he knew what I wanted. But then his first cut took maybe over 5 inches off the back right side so there wasn't much I could do then to stop him. After he was done cutting I made sure the sides were even which they weren't and had him cut more on the left. He explained this was a different cut where he cut on an angel not straight like a bob. I was still worried when it was all done that it was not even and was shocked how short it looked. Then he tells me "don't focus on if u hair is even by an inch or so. You're young That's what 70 year old women do. " I laughed because I was shocked but how disrespectful!! What kind of stylist says don't worry if your hair is even!!! So my hair is way to short! It's cut unevenly all over. He didn't even ask where I wanted my part. And the worst part is it's too short and uneven in the back that all my new growth and neckline hairs are exposed. It seems he does what he wants when styling hair. I should have never gone back after he didn't apologize to me the first time!!!! read more

Magid's is the best. I moved from Tennessee to the Chicago area two years ago and I've tried a few different stylists, but haven't been able to find THE ONE. I was a little skeptical at first but I called anyway and got a same day appointment with Magid. I was in need of touch-up, but he was able to shampoo, blow dry, and flat iron my hair to perfection! My hair looked exactly as I wanted it to with alot of body. I was in and out of there in 1 hour and 15 minutes. His prices are very reasonable and lower than what I expected. Looks like I found a new hair stylist!! read more

Just got my hair cut by Joseph and it is my favorite haircut I've ever had. He gave me a very modern, youthful, bouncy 'do. I feel like a million bucks. Bonus: -- The staff is incredibly friendly and laid back. I don't know how to describe it-- they just all seem like really cool, really nice people. -- The shampoo is amazing. The first time I was there, there was a shampoo person, and this time Joseph did the shampoo himself. They definitely take their time (in a good way). Both times I could've fallen asleep with my head in the sink. -- Joseph was thorough in asking me what I wanted to do with my hair before he started cutting (do I use a blow-dryer at home? what products do I use?). I especially appreciate his taking the time to make sure it's a style that I will be able to do myself every morning before work. -- After we figured out what I wanted he gave me a really great haircut. It's modern, it complements my round face, and it looks and feels great. -- Took less than an hour. This is the second time I have been in-- the first was just for a trim, but a fabulous experience as well. Highly recommend it! read more

I'm from LA just on vacation and I was looking to get some highlights done for new years. Magids took me in right away! :) I usually like to talk and ask many questions and I felt welcomed. I enjoyed listening to Magids' story about how his father taught him the craft of hair styling and is still working well in his 70's. A family of talented hair dressers! The service was very fast and the highlights were the right tonality, being a filmmaker myself I can be very picky when it comes to color. I am very happy to have met a new stylist and a friend. I should have thought twice about getting my hair done while on a business trip, but I was only getting a retouch, and have had the same formula for 2 years. My real life is so busy, and I had a little time in the evening, so I decided to look for an Aveda salon close to my Loop hotel. Magid's was close by, and had a couple of stellar reviews, so I figured it was a safe bet for something relatively low-risk. I phoned my salon at home, got the formula, and presented it to Joseph, who obligingly and promptly mixed the color and applied it for me. I don't know why, but somehow his application of the formula I have been using for almost two years came out almost orange...my 'true' hair color is a very dark brown. I was obviously upset by what happened, and expected that Joseph, referred to as a master of his craft in an earlier review, would do his best to rectify the situation. He made an extremely half hearted attempt, saying he could mix some color that might fix the problem, or might make it worse. since he seemed reluctant and uncertain about that, I asked my regular colorist to speak with him. she suggested an alternate plan, which he flatly refused to try. finally, i suggested that i would leave the color alone. i was thinking that i would just visit my colorist on my return home. joseph offered to blow dry my hair, and said it would be complimentary. (usually not so after a color at this salon). i thought that was a great gesture, and also a great way to keep myself from freezing on the mile walk back to my hotel on this 25 degree day. alas, his 'blow-dry' turned out to be the coarse pointing of the hair dryer toward my head, with little effort to section my hair and properly dry it. what he was doing would have caused my hair to frizz beyond control, so i had to ask him to stop. i asked him for a rubber band to tie up my wet hair, so that i could get back to the hotel and blow dry it without it air drying on the walk home. he went in the back to get it, and i never saw him again. i cannot believe that this salon got such high ratings. i am completely dissatisfied with the way joseph handled the situation. i am also very surprised that magid did not even come over to see what the situation was... it is a very small space, and that there was some problem with my hair was pretty obvious. wouldn't recommend this salon for color or service, to anyone. read more

I visited the salon on Saturday April 21st and I am extremely pleased with the service that I received. Magid and his assistant did a lot of work on my hair and it looks great! #1 - I had extensions (or a weave) and needed them removed. Magid cut the extensions out of my hair, and his assistant gently unbraided and untangled my natural hair. #2 - Magid carefully applied a mild relaxer to my hair. My hair had not been relaxed in nearly 18 months! #3 - Magid's assistant thoroughly washed and deeply conditioned my hair. She even provided a relaxing scalp massage. #4 - Magid blow dried and styled my hair to perfection. I attended a black tie gala that evening, and my hair was sleek, chic and stunning!!! I now have a standing appointment for every Saturday. read more

Where is the 0 star option? As a black woman with short hair it's very hard to find a good stylist. I was on the hunt for a good colorist and I was referred to Josef from a lady i met at the mall. And after seeing her hair I was excited to go here. I didn't know it at the time but it turns out to be the same salon my mom had been going to for more than a decade. So I figured that I was in good hands. I wanted them to die my hair from dark brown to blonde, which is a difficult process so I wanted it done professionally. I was shown a hair swatch of what my color would look like and I gave them the ok to proceed with the color. And now I'm walking around looking like a pumpkin by the head. My hair is the color of apricots. And to top it off the color is uneven. The roots are a orangey blonde and the ends are a really light orangey brown. And to top the top off Magid, who supposedly is good with short hair, had the worst technique in styling my short hair. Short edges + blow dryer + small barrel brush= electrocution hair style. When I informed Magid of my dissatisfaction I was told that I should just leave. The nerve of a business man to behave in an ill trained and ill mannered way. I would never go back. Magid has piss poor skills and horrible customer service. read more

Soooo I cheated on my hairdresser. I needed my hair done for Thanksgiving (a girl can't go meeting her boyfriend's family for the first time looking all disheveled), and my usual stylist was booked solid, so I was on the hunt for a back-up. I was a little nervous in my search, as i have very thick, natural african-american hair, and am often times charged double what I'm quoted on the phone once i get in the chair. I called and spoke to Magid directly and described what I wanted done over the phone, and had an appointment for the next day. I got in early, and was immediately washed and blowdried by the two assistants. They were a little too chatty for my taste, but they both did a good job. Then I was off to Magid, who blowdried and styled me again to a silky shine, and trimmed up my ends. My hair looked fabulous, He charged what he said he would and my boyfriend loved it, so everybody wins! In the event that I can't get in to see my regular stylist, I'll definitely go see Magid again! read more

Magid was my stylist. I literally had some time to kill and I'm pretty laid back when it comes to hair cuts. I needed a trim and was just passing by the salon. The trim itself was average and I can't complain. He got all the split ends in 15 minutes. It was $35 so I bit steep for 15 minutes of work. I guess fast can be good too. Perhaps he's just that good but he also didn't seem very enthusiastic. It was like he was restless and bored. As I was paying he pulled out his cigarettes to get ready for his smoking break. The place kind of smelled like smoke when I walked in but it was probably just te stylist. I say this with respect, that I felt like I could of had the same or better experience at Hair Cuttery or Hair Clips. Sorry to say. The salon ambience and style looked meek as well. Overall a sub par experience. I doubt I'll ever return. Now to look for a place to have some coloring done for the summer! read more

I've been getting my hair done by Magid and then by Joseph since 2002. I will never go to another place as they really know how to take care of my hair. Joe is not only one of the best hair stylists in the city, he knows my hair. Not sure about those having different experiences or leaving one star is ridiculous. As long as I've been coming here, I can say without a doubt that this is the best place for black hair care in Chicago. I get a million compliments every single time I get my hair done. Don't listen to anyone with a negative review. I am talking about 12 year's worth of experiences with these guys. read more

I don't know what to say about this salon. I've always had bad experiences at salons as a whole. This experience was very different. I walked in there and no one speaks. It's so quiet with the exception of the blow dryers and water running. People look at you and still no speaking. It was creepy! LOL They even make you get your own drape from the open closet/coatrack. That was odd. I had my hair washed and blown dry and flat ironed. Let's say I left there looking uglier than when I went in. I recently got my hair done at this salon and they do all kinds of hair types including African-American... I got my hair done by Joseph he did an amazing job because I honestly have a really hard time with my hair i never know what to do with it, so Joseph one of the stylist not only made me look FABULOUS he also used AVEDA products to shampoo and style my hair and my hair felt and look GREAT all at the same time, I was also extremely satisfied about the parking because it was very convenient... so YES i would recomend this place to EVERYONE!!!! read more

If there was an option for "0" stars I would give him "0". Magid's attitude is awful. I took my 9 y.o. To his shop. My daughter has long, curly hair. She was bawling when he was blow drying her hair because he was tugging so badly at her hair. I asked him to be gentler, he told me she was not a baby, so what if she cries. That he didn't have all day to blow dry her hair inch by inch. Let's just say the verbal exchange did not go well after that. That he is in business is mind boggling. read more

I was going to magid the first summer i was in chicago and he was hooking my hair up ! then due to my lack of knowledge of hair care and mosture it fell out because of all that heat he was putting on it with lack of tips. and i feel as a hair dresser you should always be involved with your customers hairs experience to make sure they are getting the maximu growth. even after it fell out i went back to braids and shortly there after let it grow out and went back to him. I had another two incidents that will never allow me to walk into that shop again. The first i asked for a wash and trim so i could have healthy hair going back into a protective hair style and they washed my hair, i sat in the chair to get a trim and he chopped my hair without straightening it! how do you trim some black womans hair in a fro youll never be able to see the damage!! i was very upset what an idiot. Second incdent is after some time in braids i took it out once more i felt confident in my length it was time to get my hair whipped. they washed my hair to the T... i sat in his chair and once more asked for a style and trim I REPEAT JUST A TRIM which was always 45 for me. he gave me an ugly dora the explorer cut and had the nerve to charge me 80. I refused and he said if i didnt pay that price he was no longer doing my hair. So i will never step foot in there again he is a butcher with sciccors. Where is a good black hair stylist in chicago ? please dont be fooled he knows how to work a flatiron but he will cut you bald better off going to joesph heard hes better but forget that shop all togther . I can not recommend this Salon. I was referred to Joseph by someone and her hair looked wonderful, nice stylish cut, healthy and shiny looking. I went to Joseph with a picture of the cut I wanted he put the picture on the table viewed it once and cut my hair how he wanted there weren't any layers in the picture but some how my hair has layers and looked nothing like the picture. I have natural hair I don't wear a relaxer so I was pleased this wasn't a problem for Joseph. I worked for 2 years to grow my hair out and get it healthy. 3 visits to Joseph and I have so much breakage that I have to start the process all over again. I am really upset. I'm not sure what happened, I think he uses his irons to hot. I am not pleased and will not return to the shop. I will say they are professional, friendly and the salon is updated and clean. None of that makes any difference if you can't get the style you ask for or walk away and have to deal with damaged hair. I asked him to flat iron my hair and he used a round barrel curler, I commented again and he continued with the round barrel iron. I left the shop with the same old fashioned style as the person in the chair ahead of me. Over all not pleased. I put one star because I can't save without putting a star it really should be a no star rating. read more
