If you want to explore one of the most underrepresented regional cuisines in Chicago's Indian dining scene, Magic Pepper is a place worth discovering. Magic Pepper is a new restaurant in Niles, and while the menu is broad--featuring North Indian dishes, Indo-Chinese items, and even a small kids menu with American staples--the heart of the kitchen is clearly Kerala cuisine from the southern part of India. That's what makes this place special. You can absolutely order familiar Indian dishes here. But the real reason to visit is the Kerala food, which is extremely hard to find done this well anywhere in the Chicago area. The restaurant itself is comfortable and straightforward. Think of the format of a casual sit-down chain restaurant--plenty of seating, relaxed vibe--but operated as a local family-run spot. Everything is clean, friendly, and welcoming, but it's not trying to be a trendy or overly polished dining room. It feels authentic in the best way: a solid neighborhood restaurant focused on good food rather than presentation. Service & Experience * Friendly, welcoming staff * Food is cooked fresh and brought out as it's ready * Expect dishes to arrive at slightly different times, especially with larger orders * Lots of takeout activity--clearly a popular local spot Sharing dishes actually works well here since the table tends to fill up quickly with all the accompaniments. Food We started with a familiar classic: * Samosa - solid and well executed, though this is more of a North Indian staple. Where things really shine is the South Indian and Kerala specialties. * Ghee Roast Dosa - outstanding. Thin, crispy, flaky, and served with all the traditional accompaniments like chutneys and sambar. * Pidiyum & Chicken Curry - a very traditional Kerala dish that's rare to find in Chicago. Comforting, rich, and deeply flavorful. * Malabar Parotta - a highlight. Flaky, layered, almost lacy bread that's incredible when paired with curry. This is something you rarely see outside Kerala-focused restaurants. * Kerala Chicken Curry - perfect with the parotta; deeply spiced without being overwhelming. We also tried some other menu sections: * Street-Style Indo-Chinese Fried Rice - flavorful and well balanced. * Hyderabadi Dum Biryani - served in a small kettle and executed beautifully. The basmati rice was perfectly separated and aromatic with spices. Dessert: * Gulab Jamun - warm, sweet, and a classic way to finish. Drinks One surprise was the cocktail menu. Even though there wasn't a dedicated bartender working constantly, the drinks were very good. * Indian Mojito * Indian Sunset Both had creative flavor twists using Indian ingredients and fresh juices. They took a little time to come out, but they were worth it. Verdict Magic Pepper isn't trying to be a flashy destination restaurant. It's a relaxed neighborhood spot focused on cooking authentic regional food--and that's exactly why it works. What makes it special is the Kerala cuisine, which is extremely difficult to find in the Chicago area at this level. If you're adventurous with food or want to explore beyond the usual butter chicken and tikka masala lineup, this place is absolutely worth seeking out. Other than food, you need to improve on everything. ZERO organizational skills, we waited in line for 15 mins, no one even came to ask or tell us we will take X number of minutes to even attend to new guests. After that once we got seated, they never even came to get our order and once they did, they didn't even care to bring our food. Fun part we ordered everything at once and we literally got only three out of six items that we ordered. Overall, we entered at 1:45 PM and got out at 4 o'clock. Frustrated the biggest issue I felt was the button idli that we asked for kids we never got it. Their service was so terrible that the guy was taking our order was expressionless didn't even care when we decided to walk out. I was so mad that I didn't want to even pay the bill for the stuff we ate, but we still paid and left. The table which came after us they even got some of their food but we didn't. We were in the area for Indian grocery and that's when we decided to try this spot. It's conveniently located near Patel and Walmart so that's a plus. We saw everyone ordering the Kerala parotha and decided to give it a try. It's was our first time and it was delicious. We also ordered 3 in 1 podi idli and that was tasty too. Service was inconsistent as we were not served the 5 dip platter like it was mentioned in the reviews. Dessert was a disappointment. It spoiled the whole experience which was otherwise good. Went for a weekend dinner on Saturday. A new restaurant with nice ambiance. Food was ok too. Ordered baby corn in starter- didn't like it at all. Panner tikka was fine and soft. Malai kofta was fine too. I saw 2 tables that had dirty dishes and it remained like that unclean for quite some time. That was very weird as we were sitting close to one of those tables. read more

We popped in just to get two masala dosas and a mango lassi. We then decided to order a Gobi Manchurian as well. The server who took our order forgot to bring my drink out. The other tables who came after us got their dosas. We then get one dosa, while my husband is still waiting on his. The dosa and sambhar both were room temperature and my masala was missing, they basically got me someone else's order for a plain dosa. I had to then ask them for the masala and wait again. They weren't served hot. My dosa also had a hair in it at which point I stopped eating. My husband gets his dosa after I'm done with mine. I was very impressed by the food and service here. I came here with a large group on a Sunday after church. They were able to seat us right away. The interior decor is beautiful. For food I split a dosa, South Indian meat thali, garlic naan, and a noodle dish with my husband. The dosa and garlic naan are an absolute must order. They were so good! The meat thali was okay but I'd probably not order that again. The dosa was phenomenal and I can't rave about it enough. read more

Tried this new Indian restaurant in the Chicago suburbs and the food was honestly really good. The baby corn was packed with flavor, the idli and dosa were solid, and the sambhar with all the different chutneys was a favorite. The mini falooda was too much for me but my family enjoyed it. Service was very slow, but the space itself is really pretty and the food was worth the wait. Overall a good experience, just something to keep in mind if you are in a rush. Wow! The food here is absolutely the bomb! We stuck to the Kerala food options and it blew us away. Ordered the Malabar biryani (my fav biryani I ever tried), Malabar chicken curry, Kerala parotta, and shrimp molee. We devoured everything. Only complaint is the service. Staff were not well trained, and one was downright rude. The place will lose customers if they don't improve staff etiquette, which is a shame since the food is incredible. read more

I've had this place a few times now and will say the food is delicious and probably some of the best Indian cuisine I've had! The customer service though is mid at best. In all my interactions coming here they always come off as inexperienced attending customers or just disorganized. Some encounters I've had in the past: 1. Slow service 2. No service (i.e. never got a table/wait time) 3. Wrong order 4. I heard about this place online and shopping at the Deli4You market right by it. I decided to go try their 'Tuesday night Biryani special'. Let me tell you, that was some of the very best Biryani I've ever had. The rice was perfectly cooked, well seasoned and spicy, not oily, plenty of meat, and they gave you a Huge portion of it. It also came with a number of side items and a very nice cup of tea. The service and ambiance was welcoming and open. I couldn't have been more impressed with the food. The family and I have been here an ample amount of times now and they are consistent with the taste, just as wonderful as the first time. The dosa night on Wednesday is worth the money since you get to try all the dosa plus the buffet they set up. ( They even have masala chai) The manager there is very accommodating and definitely tries to make your visit a good one. Don't even look at any of these reviews go be your own judge. Excellent restaurant, came on a Sunday afternoon with a bunch of friends, everything was delicious. Many of my friends tried new dishes to them like pidi and pal kappa. But I stuck to traditional - a humble poori sabji which reminded me of my childhood.
