Mumbai Indian Grill Sherman Ave. We've only been here twice in four years but will definitely return more often! Our first time was pre-Covid and the place was a little hole-in-the-wall but the meal was delicious. Then Covid hit and the restaurant operated as solely takeout and delivery and we kind of forgot about it. Fast forward to six months ago, they reopened as a 'dine-in' restaurant, complete with white tablecloths and a refreshed interior. Still a simple and unassuming place, but we decided to try it again tonight and it didn't disappoint! The food is delicious. We started with the samosas, which came filled with flavorful potatoes and vegetables, fried to perfection. We also ordered aloo mutter (peas and potato curry), medium spice, and it was just enough heat to make my nose run. The tandoori chicken came out sizzling hot on the platter and I mean sizzle! It was seasoned and cooked very nicely. Took a couple of minutes for the steam to stop. We ordered a side of naan, which arrived hot and buttery soft, and yet lightly crisp on the bottom. I highly recommend this little spot. It's a BYOB too. Don't get turned off if you're the only people occupying a table (as we were). I swear it felt like they made dinner JUST for US. We order three dishes and a side of naan, brought home leftovers, and the bill was around $40.

Great flavors for a cheap price. I never knew this place existed until finding it on grubhub. If you're craving indian food in evanston, this is the place I recommend. They are takeout and delivery only though.

Samosa Chaat

Amazing bang for your buck. I got the samosa chaat (pictured) and vegetable korma. The vegetable korma was rich and creamy with a nice kick (I got medium spicy -- sometimes medium is insanely spicy, but this was very reasonable), and there was also a TON of rice provided. But the samosa chaat is the best samosa chaat I've ever had! The flavors are incredible: spicy, sour/tangy, fresh/sweet... and the texture is amazing too. Every bite has its own unique flavor. Also, it's surprisingly big. I would definitely order this samosa chaat again. It's only $8, but it could be two meals for me... and I would try something else next time instead of vegetable korma, but that's just because I want to try more Indian food! (I usually just order paneer tikka masala, my favorite food)

I really wanted to give this place a good review but after my 1st and what will probably be my last experience I'm not sure that I will be returning. Let's start with the ordering experience. When my wife and I arrived, the place was completely empty. There was a man waiting to greet us and he did so with haste. We informed him that we wanted to do take out. He directed us to another man at a counter. As I ordered the food, the man kept motioning his hand as if to say "hurry up." After I finished the order, he printed the receipt and basically threw it at me. I almost cancelled the order. The wait for the food was rather short, about 10 minutes. We ordered the Malai Chicken Masala (mild), lamb sagg (mild) and garlic naan. We were brought our food and we left. The chicken was kind of bland and the lamb was a little tough but we continued to eat. The icing on the whole experience (sarcasm intended) was a nice, long black hair I found in the chicken as I was about to place my fork in it (see attached picture). I called the restaurant to complain and see what could be done. The guy who answered gave the phone to the chef (I do not know why) and then said he would refund the chicken dish. At this point I was done with the whole experience. We ended up throwing the rest of the food away. Sorry Mumbai but we will not be returning. I hope your future is better than your present.

If I had a choice, I could probably eat Indian food 6x a week and it'd be fine. I do like Mumbai Indian Grill. It's pretty decent, especially their $7 or so lunch specials. Their saag paneer tastes almost like American creamed spinach (in looks and in flavor) but I like it. Their paneer cubes aren't as soft though. I've tried their daal (a bit too salty for my liking) and their chana masala was decent. My #1 favorite is the saag paneer and they do a decent job, so I'll leave the review as is.

Hmm not sure why this place has such a low rating. Honestly judging from Yelp, I may not have tried it. Until my Indian friend suggested to have dinner here one snowy night. Ordered the fried vegetarian appetizer, I think that was the worst part of our meal. It came with 2 different sauces, the sauces had more flavor than the samosa tasting appetizers. However, our chicken tandoor came sizzling hot, VERY flavorful. The naans we ordered we also very good, fluffy and warm. Very good service here. They allowed my friend to sit down while she waited for me for a good 20 minute, I was delayed because of snow and driving condition was bad. We sat right by the window, and it was such a toasty dinner. The workers here are quite friendly, and the inside of the restaurant is clean and cozy. I would recommend this place!

I arrive within twenty-one minutes buying only a quarter's worth of time at the parking meter thinking surely that would be enough time to grab my carryout order? Guys, why was I waiting an additional twenty minutes for food when nobody was in this restaurant? I hate when a restaurant draaaaaaags without giving any reasons. Thali shops have literal fast food. Not in the American sense but the foods are as simple as crepes (dosa) served with chutney. The other items would need more time. Curries, biriyani, etc Ordered an onion dosa and a masala dosa. Texture was different from what I'm accustomed to eating. But I'm wanting something similar to South Indian style. The onion dosa contained what looked like a full, medium sized onion. In Southie style it should be pan fried till brown, sometimes incorporated into the dosa or stuffed inside, this was barely translucent. Didn't slap. The masala dosa was mid. Didn't touch much. Hate throwing away food but.. Not wasting the stomach on barely good. Something about the texture of the dosa wasn't... It just wasn't good. One and done. If a restaurant offers dosa, it's gotta be great. Maybe their other foods are better?

I heard they made great Chicken Biryani, but unfortunately they were out when I went. Something I don't think is talked enough about though is their chai - the best I've had in Chicago. Again, this isn't a classic sit down restaurant so don't expect to be waited on as attentively as you would somewhere less chill, but the staff was super nice nonetheless.

Since we hadn't been here, we decided to check it out. This restaurant is located off Dempster St. in a small plaza. They serve a variety of dosas and Indian street food dishes. They also offer Indian desserts, Indian beverages, Boba teas, and Yemeni Adani Tea. The pricing is reasonable. We ordered a Ghee Roasted Dosa, and extra spicy Mysore Masala Dosa, a Spring Dosa, Mumbai Pav Bhaji, and two Adani teas. The food was served promptly. The food is served in sturdy disposable food trays along with plastic ware and hot beverages are served in coffee shop like to-go, small size (paper) coffee cups. The tea was scalding hot as it was freshly prepared. I had to let it cool off. The plastic lid of the cup was tightly fitted and given how hot the cup was, it was hard to take the plastic lid off. The lid was hot along with the cup. They had the hot cup sleeves but they were too big for their small tea cups. The tea was nice. All the dosas were tasty. We liked them. They had decent flavor and texture. They were a bit thicker than the dosas from other south Indian restaurants we have eaten at. That wasn't a problem to us. The spice level for my dosa was good. The accompaniments with the dosas of sambar, coconut chutney, and tomato chutney, for dosa dipping purposes, were nice. We really liked the coconut chutney (w/ cashews) and tomato chutney (w/ peanuts). They were flavorful. The sambar had a nice flavor (from spices & veggies) but texture wise it could've been better. It needed to be a bit thicker. The Pav Bhaji (bread with mixed veggies in a gravy) had a decent taste but it needed to be thick with some body from the usual veggies in it. The Pav (Indian bread) for the Bhaji was really good. Our experience was nice. The service was decent. We were the first customers after they opened at 12:30 pm but a short time later, the restaurant got busy. If I am in the area again, I would go back. Overall, 3.5 stars.

It is difficult to find the exact words to tell you how much I love Ghareeb Nawaz…read more We live in a world where a burger and fries at a fast food joint costs somewhere around $10. Some focus on Instagram-ability instead of quality, and others dump a man versus food size portion in front of you in an effort to show "Hey! Look! vAlUe!!" while the quality is AWOL. Ghareeb Nawaz delivers across the board. The portions are massive, enough for three-ish lunches, even if you're perpetually as voracious as I am. The quality is excellent - meats are consistently tender, rice is cooked perfectly, and the spices bloom into the nose, the palate, and the heart. As for value, the $13 realistically comes out to less than $5 per, $3.25 if you aren't as gluttonous as myself. Not only that, cans of soda are $1.50, and the bank machine is also $1.50 (something I haven't seen even 10 years ago). When it comes to the service, it is imperfect, but efficient. There are no unnecessary pleasantries; it is a "hello, what do you want" sort of deal. If you didn't realize it was cash only? The order is placed, here is the receipt, the cash machine is over there. The small change I would offer is to have order numbers (which, I appreciate might be challenging with a cash-only establishment). When items leave the kitchen, the runner yelling out the order can bring up the question 'is this me?' Order numbers would be better. Service like this has to be earned, and I assure you Ghareeb Nawaz has earned it. Final verdict: For an establishment to have a rough-around-the-edges, surly nature and be successful, it has to earn it. I can think of no example more perfect than Ghareeb Nawaz. The quality is top-notch, the value is unmatched, and the nonsense is chucked out the window. Order - pay - devour with glee. What are you doing still reading, set your GPS already!
