I don't think I've given a five star rating to anything... So how can I justify that here? I think that in the end it's because MLM is truly one of those rare organizations where you, as a partner, are required to be invested. Its failings are your own.
Engagement is mandatory and not at the endowment level (they don't have one).
The school is a fully staffed co-op (meaning that it's built for working parents who are not expected to contribute during class time) though are required to contribute in the running and upkeep of the school and its programs. If there is something I feel that the program is lacking, it's up to me to work with the board, the parents, teachers, and the extended community to look for ways to address the issue. A failing in this regard can only be placed at my own feet.
Community is what makes the school special for our family.
On to more objective criteria...
Looking back over my calendar I have made over 40 visits to 27 unique programs. MLM was special for us for a number of reasons.
1) No administrative egos -- it's a parent run co-op. There is no "owner" looking to turn a profit or build their legacy.
2) Hot lunch program -- Okay so kids this age don't exactly eat a lot so the convenience factor probably gets overplayed. However, our daughter eats more than "kids fare" (loves garbanzo beans) and is now a competent helper far beyond the kitchen and the dining room. Just this evening she decided to organize the shelves by the front door and get everyone's coats, shoes, and such ready for the next day.
3) Montessori -- This is not the right educational approach for every child. Our daughter has always been inquisitive, possessing a long attention span, and good self-discipline skills. We as a family are drawn to Reggio Amelia programs, ideally one with a strong Chinese component. Finding that outside of Boston or San Diego is nearly impossible. At MLM we have found a school and educational community that provides exactly what we need. Diversity within a program that is not blindly driven by an ideology yet provides the appropriate level of structure to encourage our children to grow through self-direction.
4) The teachers have been here for a long time! Our daughter had 5 teachers in a year at her old school (a very large east side program). Finding MLM and its staff with their long tenures is unique and IMHO speaks volumes for the strength of our community, and positive work environment which I believe leads to a joyful classroom environment.
5) Academics... Our daughter started the program when she was potty trained at 2.5 and is Kindergarten ready at 4. She can count to a 100, read, mix her primary and secondary colors, and most importantly to me as an engineer, remains inquisitive! read more
