Oh, how I love Sponge! I took my two-year-old for one session of Spanish with Noelia, a native…read morespeaker from Puerto Rico. My son is normally pretty slow to warm up in social situations, and she made sure he was comfortable and could participate. Sometimes it can be hard when he's surrounded by more outgoing peers. He adored her as a result and I saw him open up in ways he hadn't before. The classes are taught 100% in Spanish with a chance to review and ask questions at the end of each class in English. A handout is also provided each week with the lyrics to songs and some key vocab to practice at home. There are lots of props and fun routines that get the kids engrossed in learning. The only thing preventing me from giving a five-star review is the location; I wish something more central were available. Now that we live on the north end, it's not feasible for us to take classes with Sponge anymore. It's also fairly expensive compared to similar programs in town (Polly-glot Tots comes to mind). If it were closer and more affordable, we'd be enrolled again in a heartbeat.

Spanish, French, Mandarin and Japanese languages are taught in an immersive and interactive environment which includes standard phrases, songs, dance, culture and parental or caregiver involvement. All instructors are native speakers who genuinely enjoy children and their jobs. Tuition is reasonable for 18 class sessions, a summer camp is offered, and one can make up classes if they are missed.

My husband and I enrolled our son at PFM when he was five months old, as I was returning to work…read moreafter a long maternity leave. Naturally, I was concerned about this transition; anxious about the adjustment period and a little weepy that he would be under the care of others every day! This feeling of uneasiness quickly subsided. Upon our very first visit, the PFM team jumped into action and together we put a comfortable transition plan into place. The teachers in his classroom (as well as the Director and Assistant Director) were very warm and showed a genuine interest in our sons onboarding, providing personal updates throughout his day as well as advice on naps and feeding. Relationships quickly bloomed. The online portal that is updated by his teachers throughout the day documented sleeping, eating and diaper patterns, giving us full visibility to what his days looked like. All of this provided me with peace of mind, which is what you need as a new parent during this transition. Fast forward four months: we have an extremely happy child who lights up every day at drop off for school and is in no rush to leave at pick up time! Children cannot fake their excitement, so you know that this is genuine. The child-led philosophy of Montessori allows our son freedom in the classroom to "choose his own adventure" every day, while still providing him with a structured curriculum that has enabled him to surpass his milestones. Being a very active child, our son is thriving in this environment and we have seen tremendous growth in him, both socially and developmentally. It is evident that the team here truly cares about the children and love what they do. I would recommend PFM to any families seeking a child care experience that is nurturing, community oriented and child focused. It is so much more than just a school or day care, and has exceeded our expectations.

He is learning, developing, and experiencing so much faster and more than he would anywhere else. The staff and curriculum at PFM are top notch and it shines through in my child. Every single day he comes home with new and exciting things to talk to me about. I know my child is getting the BEST experience there is to offer. Not only are the Montessori program and staff 5 star, but so is the classroom environment, meal plan, playground, community, owner and location. I wouldn't hesitate a second to think about enrolling your child in this school.

We have been to two other daycares (which had infant rooms) and one other preschool, so we have some points of comparison. Things I really like: - management - Lois is on top of things and involved in childcare advocacy in the region. Through the pandemic, I felt confident that CDCC was managing things as well as possible. The staff was vaccinated quickly and the changes to policies (pickup/drop off, schedule, masks) all made sense. - atmosphere - the staff are consistent and friendly and my kids like them - food - it is cooked on site and pretty well balanced - playground - they go out twice a day to a nice private yard, right at the school - community - most people who attend live fairly close, which helps build community. There are some required volunteer hours, but they are not excessive. Sometimes I wish that there was more "formal enrichment" when I put on my "ambitious parent" hat, but really kids (or at least mine) are so happy with consistency, community and more play than formal learning. I think a lot of places are too academic, too early. Learning to share, do circle time, sit at a table for meals, switch activities according to a schedule etc. goes a long way towards school readiness. Music classes and swim lessons can be found elsewhere (though CDCC did them pre-pandemic and pre-renovation closure at Medgar Evers) and I'm okay with art projects that look like they were made by a toddler, rather than a pinterest pro.

I hesitate to even call it a child care center, because it really is so much more. Ms. Lois is the most genuine individual. She is friendly, welcoming, knows and remembers all the small details of our life, and truly cares about every child and family. We've experienced a lot of bureaucracy and felt like a dollar sign at other centers but not here. Lois bent over backwards to help us get care for a child who was temporarily staying with us when we were in a bind. The teachers all feel like family who love our kids like their own. They've been part of the neighborhood for decades, and it shows. I love that they provide home cooked meals, neighborhood walks, park and outdoor time, story time at Douglass Truth Library, swim lessons at Medgar Evers pool, and so much more. Our kids attended for 2 years before we moved, and it's still the part of Seattle I miss the most. Thank you CDCC for being such a valuable part of our children's lives!
