A former classmate was mistaken for a prostitute late one night, and she was more offended at the offered rate than the mistaken identity.

Be Benevolent…read more I have walked by this building numerous times but never learned its history or purpose until the past weekend, when I went in to see a free movie screening of "Big Fight in Little Chinatown" and Q&A afterwards. With the influx of Asian immigrants in the past century, many had no place to go to find assistance, information, or just a place to be themselves. Within Chinatown, Chong Wa is where everyone went. It started as a Chinese school. It evolved to provide services and a place of community, a place to belong. Today, it is also home to the famous Seattle Chinese Community Girls Drill Team, which was modeled after the U.S. military drill team when Ruby Chow established the team in 1952. Sometimes, you can watch them practice in the courtyard of Chong Wa. The building is expectedly older, but it is well maintained. Kudos to them. May they have many more decades and centuries ahead, running a drill team led by volunteers, offering Chinese classes, and having a place for the elderly and not-so-elderly to hang out and speak their native language.

I believe I started when I was about 5-6. Admittedly, I didn't take the lessons as seriously as I should have, so my proficiency isn't where I (and my parents and teachers) wish it were... SORRY MOM! They have hired some quality instructors and I definitely had a great time here, learning about Chinese culture and language. I don't know if they do this anymore, but we used to have traditional dance and calligraphy classes in conjunction with normal language training. I don't know how Chong Wa's tuition compares to other Chinese Schools, but they were extremely flexible with my family as my parents put all 3 kids here for 10+ years! If I remember correctly, back then it was $250+ per child per semester. It sounds expensive, but you learn about your culture, language AND make lifelong friendships with children from the same cultural backgrounds. It doesn't seem like many people are enrolled at Chong Wa anymore and that makes me incredibly sad. There used to be 3 full classrooms of kids, but now the numbers are dwindling. I hope they stay in operation long enough for me to enroll my future children at this Chinese school.

He's also quite gifted at explaning grammatical nuances- there are many times where I've found a concept totally clear thanks to Hadrien, and then will stubble across a confusing explanation somewhere else and realize in fact, it's not something simple to explain. As other reviewers have mentioned, you also learn a natural style of speech in his classes that is hard to find elsewhere, but will make it much much easier to follow conversations, media, and jokes.

Unfortunately I had to stop my lessons due to work priorities but when I continue again I will definitely contact Hadrien. Apart from the usual grammar lessons, he taught me phrases that are not in French text books (colloquialisms, slang, cultural references). He is completely bilingual in English and French so he can translate expertly. I was frankly amazed and impressed by his ability to clearly explain the nuances of every word. One of the reasons I selected Hadrien as my teacher was the fact that he is from Paris. His accent is Parisian and I wanted to learn how to pronounce the Parisian way, or at least the way French is pronounced in France. I have had lessons with French speakers from Quebec and parts of Africa and certainly the regional differences in accent are audible. During the time I had tutoring with Hadrien I was also taking a class at the Alliance Française. I found my one-on-one time with Hadrien extremely helpful as I had the opportunity to clarify things I learned in class, or expand upon some grammar rule or another. I am sharing my perception and feelings after having completed two initial courses at Excel…read moreMandarin, the 4-week Intro class and the 7-week first quarter, on my journey of this four-quarter Fluency series. The Excel Mandarin learning method strikes me as the most advanced teaching format out there. It unconditionally focuses on enabling Mandarin listening and speaking skills for daily life situations. I have tried other formats before, such as group classes and individual tutoring, as well as individual apps, which were all of course helpful but not providing me with a learning progress I had been seeking. This Excel Mandarin method does for me what none of the other approaches I tried could do - it enabled me after these initial three months so far to hold a basic conversation in Mandarin with increasing confidence. It did a shift in my mind and taught me how to learn. A method called 'reverse classroom' is used to make students speak and practice in Mandarin right away all the time, instead of mainly listening to content delivery by a teacher. This way, right from the first class, students learn to overcome this huge mental hurdle, anxiety and hesitation and learn to listen and speak Mandarin, and embedded the words and grammar structures. The class format itself is online in a small, intimate group setting. The classes feel relaxed and engaging, and it is fun and motivating to connect with the teachers and peer learners. It must be clearly stated though - This method requires the regular time commitment to prepare for each class, besides the normal time for work and social life. There are three evening classes per week for the fast pace, and it is essential to use these days in-between to study and complete homework to prepare, so one can feel relaxed when each class begins. Only a prepared mind will be relaxed to take the benefit of the reverse classroom approach. To support this, there is a dedicated tailored Excel Mandarin app to provide weekly vocabulary, grammar teachings and dedicated articles and online office hour, with immediate supporting feedback on homework provided. The app is designed extremely well, connecting content, fellow students and teachers. The engagement of the teachers is so high, with many follow-ups and touchpoints. The method's effectiveness rests on two pillars - the thoughtfully created online learning app framework, as well as the just outstanding teachers who just thrive to see students succeed and coach them with this reverse classroom learning method. The two teachers I work with, Eco and Tim, are just stellar. At the end of the first quarter, students are giving a short, few-minutes basic presentation about one topic of their choice, and then answer questions by their fellow students .... All in Mandarin, with the vocabulary and grammar kit available so far. At the end of the first quarter I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment and confidence. I feel no other Mandarin learning system can even remotely deliver this in an equal time frame. The second quarter, which I just started, has the same feeling of clear and effective support structure, and I get into the groove of good time management for best using this fast-paced and fun method.

I've now taken both Q1, Q2, and Q3 with EM, and I'm very impressed with my progress. In Q1, I…read morelearned a lot of new vocabulary and key sentence structures. In Q2, I learned more complex grammar and vocabulary that's been very practical for discussing everyday life. I learned how to express my opinions more and talk about food, hobbies, and travel, which is not only useful, but also fun to practice. In Q3, I learned how to talk about more complex topics, such as work, emotions, and changes. EM classes are a fairly significant time commitment (class 3x per week + weekly homework), but definitely worth it. Their approach to teaching - focusing on speaking, lots of practice in class, tailored toward what would be most practical for most people - has enabled me to progress faster in learning the language than I would've been able to in other programs. On top of that, my teachers and classmates are funny and enjoyable to spend time with! I'm continuing on to the intermediate conversation class because I'm excited to further improve my speaking fluency and discuss more interesting topics with classmates.

What initially seemed minor quickly escalated into a much more serious, full-body condition requiring an ER visit and follow-up care with a dermatologist. This has been an incredibly stressful and painful experience for our family, all stemming from what should have been a safe and well-maintained facility. I did contact management to report what happened. While they stated that their cleaning and maintenance procedures are within guidelines, that response was frustrating given the outcome and the severity of my daughter's condition. Proper sanitation of hot tubs is critical, and based on our experience, I would urge others to be cautious. Unfortunately, I can't recommend using the hot tub facilities here.

Once the entire family met up, we climbed back into the car and headed to Bellevue. Not sur if it was due to the time. But we were surprised there was a lot of parking available. We spent a good 2-hrs here which included getting lost and finding other street entries into the botanical park from a school and from other busy street corner at the bottom of the park. Nice and shaded, quiet little creeks, plenty of seating for those that were inspired to journal, plenty of elderly people using this time to exercise and stretch. We enjoyed the different areas like the swinging bridge, the Japanese garden and even the little cafe they have there. Fairly priced items and plenty of tables to enjoy a refreshment and snack. By the time we were done, the gift shop was already closed. So I took the opportunity to drop a donation into the box instead.

There are so many wonderful things to say about LPW-B but first and foremost will always be the dedication of the teachers and staff to the kiddos. Many teachers have been there for over 10 years and that certainly speaks to their love for the job and how they are treated by the administration (just ask anyone in childcare, esp. from a larger chain). They're also very accommodating to your child's needs -- my son has many food allergies and also requires the use of a feeding tube. The teachers & admin had zero qualms about providing him with his tubes feeds (twice daily at specific times). This was a huge relief as first time parents who really struggled getting the appropriate nutrition to their kiddo and then had to worry about food allergies and whether or not medical accommodations could be made. Finally, the monthly tuition is incredibly affordable. For both of my children, the monthly tuition is equivalent to my friend's one child at one of the nearby larger chains. The only "negative" I will mention is that if you really like the idea of having real-time updates via an app, LPW-B is more like your traditional elementary school where you'll get an update at the end of the day.

Heck, I wish I could be a kid again just so that I could go to kindergarten there. So many experiments and crafts for the kids to do, culturally diverse, small (10 max, I think?), and a really pleasant and caring atmosphere. I am just a little worried that when our 4 year will go to public school, she'll be bored since she has already learned all the letters of the alphabet this year. But, they do so much more than academic basics: it's the whole Montessori curriculum. I do wish they would go outside a bit more to play, but we make up for that at home. I also like that they don't charge an arm and a leg unlike some other options in the area that we explored and didn't like as much.

We're very happy with the care she has received from the staff since being there. The infant room is nice and large, so the kids aren't always crowded together out of necessity. There are several toys and padded chairs for the babies as they develop from lying around all day to crawling and cruising. Our daughter has bonded most with Miss Anna, Miss Pari, and Mr Victor, it seems like. When we arrive to pick her up she's usually asleep in one of their arms. It feels like we are leaving her with family when we drop her off. The price is good for the area, and we have the added benefit of charging to credit card rather than paying with bank transfer. Since daycare is a significant part of the monthly budget, might as well get some points with your credit card program!

At…read morefirst I chalked it up to him getting familiar with the new routine and a new school but he never adjusted. He also talked about how afraid he was of the teacher Mrs Janelle. And one time even the teacher admitted to us that she let our child struggle to take the cap off a marker for over an hour and not helping him or letting him do anything until he did it, but he never was able to. Now that we've been out and into another school for a long time we realize how miserable our child was at this school, since he loves his new school and actually looks forward to going every day. The teachers are far too strict and cold towards the children and it was not a good fit for us. A few odd things. It was against school rules to ever allow parents inside the classroom except once a month by appointment. And also at one point the school had their full day license suspended or taken away. So they could not watch kids for more than a couple hours. We never got an explanation why, and at this point we took our child out of the school. I think most parents did the same thing.

Ms. Janell is nice but firm with the kids. She won my son's respect together with love. Her transparent and prompt communication about whatever happened with the school also earned my trust. However, if you expect your kids get spoiled , being held all the time and getting whatever they want in any condition,then this is not the place for you!
