Another stop for our family of 6 at Maggio's upon our arrival to Big Bear. We did the same last year and liked the experience. Once again, good pizza and a cold beer - exactly what we are looking for after a 2-hour drive! We came in around 1 pm and it wasn't too busy, we ordered right away and found a big table inside. The team there is friendly and efficient. It's located in the large shopping plaza along with Vons. They have Tesla superchargers in the lot now - YAY for that! Parking is plentiful, especially if you park towards the main road. The restaurant is clean and spacious. We like that they have a soda fountain machine so you can get refills as needed. Pizza was good, hot and had plenty of toppings. We didn't get the salad this time but that decent too. Their ranch is yummy, we got one side to try it with the pizza. I'd give Maggio's a solid 3 stars--there were a few decent things, but overall it didn't quite hit the mark. The gluten-free pizza was probably the highlight, around a 7/10. It was decent and definitely edible, but nothing I'd go out of my way to get again. The salad, unfortunately, was pretty wilted and didn't feel fresh. The soda machine was also disappointing--everything tasted watered down, which didn't help the overall experience. On top of that, the place itself could use a bit more attention to cleanliness; the floors looked like they needed to be swept. Truly remarkable customer service -- plus they also have the best pizza in Big Bear! We ordered and drove out to pick it up. When we arrived, the place was packed, with no seating available. I believe it was because they were closing soon and couldn't seat anymore guest due to full capacity. That's when we realized they must have good pizza! We waited longer than expected, but they took care of us and apologized for the delay. The owner or manager gave us a discount for waiting past the allotted time, and we truly appreciated the gesture. Let me tell you, we all enjoyed their pizza--spot on and very cheesy. Great-tasting pizza made with high-quality ingredients, paired with extremely friendly service. I was hesitant to come to this pizza spot because of the negative reviews but decided to give it a try. I am not a huge pizza connoisseur, I just like what I like. The pizza was good tho, 9/10 I didn't get to try the wings but my kids liked them and finished them. My daughter got the lasagna and loved it and she's a very picky eater. The funnel fries were very easy but that is expected. Okay, so food.. 9/10 Now... Service. Now I can see why the negative reviews on the service. It was very packed when we got there, we got it to go and was told 30-45min. I came back around 35-40min later to get my food and it still wasn't ready. There were a lot of people waiting. But as I was waiting I was able to see the cooks in the background, working on the pizzas. These guys were not chit chatting or standing around or just ignoring orders. NO. They were prepping them from scratch, working hard putting pizzas in and out of the oven. Pizza like this from scratch isn't done in 15-20min in that case just go to Domino's or Pizza Hut if you want something fast. My food order was done in almost exactly an hour but that was the time I heard they were giving everyone. I didn't get bad service, the girl helping me out looked unfriendly but she was very nice, just trying to get all of the ours out. I can see the people sitting waiting being exasperated bc their orders are taking forever to get to their table but please go and take a look at the back so you can have an idea of all the hard work they're putting in! Thick crust, but not dense, it was airy and fluffy and yummy!!! Also ordered zucchini fries and a chicken strip kids meal. The staff were indifferent . Oh my. The service is great. The salads are great, but the meat is not real. The first time I went there I got the lasagna. The sausage did not taste anything like sausage. I told my wife I didn't want to go back. She really wanted to so she suggested I get something different this time. I got spaghetti with meat balls. We came here for dinner and most of reviews spoke of the pizza so I decided to try it along with the arugula pear salad. My friend and I split it. We got our pizza before our salad because they forgot about it. I asked about it when the pizza came. We got the house special and it could have used a bit more cook on it because the toppings were a bit uncooked. The dough was just ok for me. Thick like bread and it was ok. When you're in Grande Oso, you gotta eat like a Grande Oso. I'm nervous when trying pizza places because they're usually overpriced, and serve some basic food. Kind of like many places these days just serving the same Sysco crap that got microwaved and slapped onto a flattop for texture. The food industry kind of blows now. It's overpriced, and bland and boring. I was pretty damn surprised but his place though. One of the reviews said they don't answer the phone and you gotta go in to order. Why would I wanna do that? I'm just trying to pick up a pizza and some alkoholfre beers on my way back home. So I got her number....i asked for a large pepperoni and mushroom, and she said it would be 20 minutes. I show up, and it smelled like Snoop and Martha were in there parking lot making the pizzas. Like old men used to say "son I didn't inhale, I got a contact high". Once I got the pizza home, my wife noticed that the box smelled like Snoop's House. I told her we spent a moment with it in the parking lot and that was it! It wasn't even mine! Anyway. The crust is crispy, yet foldable (which is an absolute must have) the cheese and sauce had good flavor. It seems like they add some "herb" ya don't normally get in sauce these days. I liked it. A damn fine number of shrooms and pepperoni, like a lot. They didn't cheap out. The cheese pull out game is phenomenal. That's another quality that you have, or you don't. One of my favorite chain pizza spots is Filippi's. They load you up with cheese, but it's like eating a brick, since it all comes off at once. We ate the entire pizza in one sitting. It was weird because my eyes got dry, and the only thing that could satisfy the hunger was more pizza. The pizza sure made me laugh the whole way though! Maggio's is our regular pizza spot in Big Bear. The staff are always so nice when we visit, and they actually give you realistic times for when your food will come out, which is so clutch if you have hungry small children you're trying to keep from imploding. It's always clean when we visit (even the bathrooms), and the pizzas and calzones are reliably yummy. I also love that one of the owners is regularly posted at the little table next to the drinks machine and that their staff genuinely seem to enjoy having them there. Place was sooo busy . I heard them screaming that they only have two cooks . You see lots of servers working and cleaning but why is there not enough cooks? Once they seated us they told us we need to go to the front to place the order with the cashier. I thought that was weird . In that case I should had just ordered while I waited to be seated. I ordered a medium pepperoni pizza and a side of buffalo wings. We asked about our wings and they told us they will be out shortly . We finished our pizza and still our wings were not out yet. I went to go ask and they looked all confused. I'm sure they just forgot. And the soda machine does not have very good options to choose from . I really wanted to love this place because the service was truly excellent. If I were reviewing on service alone, this would easily be 5 stars. The staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Unfortunately, the pizza itself just didn't live up to that experience. I can honestly say this is the first time I've ever had bad pizza. The crust was extremely dry and hard, and the bottom was burnt, which likely explains why the crust felt brick-hard. Normally, we even enjoy pizza cold the next day--but this has been sitting in the fridge for two days untouched, which says a lot. I really wish we could have liked it because the people were wonderful, but sadly, the pizza just missed the mark. read more

I went into this place for lunch and was told by the lady working the counter that they had been there for 40 years and still made their dough from scratch. She also told me they made fheir dressings from scratch. It sure DIDN'T taste like it! The pizza crust was stiff and reminded me of frozen crust. The dressings were nothing to write home about. My first clue should have been that the place didn't have those beautiful Italian food smells. No hand towels in the restroom, either. I don't recommend this place. read more

The sole reason for the 3 instead of 4 star is what was referred to as the "chicken parm sub". It was basically microwaved chicken chunks in marinara with some mozz. I wanted to call the police. I think the best part of the whole think was how crispy the crust was. Probably the best crust I've had in a while. However, the reason for the 3 star review was for the chicken Parmesan sandwich. One of the worst sandwiches I've had. I was expecting a chicken cutlet in a sandwich but what I got seemed to be chopped up frozen chicken pieces DUNKED in marinara sauce, thrown in a hoagie roll (bread was good) and then DUNKED with cheese (cheese was good though). Also got my husband's favorite with pineapple, pepperoni, and jalapeno... delicious! Pizza is thick and super filling.
