Dined here one night in Verona and, the very next night, found myself back for more. I guess there's a reason why it got a Michellin nod.
Maffei is tucked away off Piazza delle Erbe, near the frescoed buildings. There's an imposing wrought iron gate which, if you follow up a cobbled drive, will lead you to their outdoor patio. I did not dine indoors, but enjoyed my supper in their candlelit courtyard, which was airy and elegant. Since you're sequestered away from the Piazza, it's serenely quiet and the perfect escape for an intimate meal.
They inundate you with baskets of really good bread while you wait for your food, and I had to do everything within my power to resist filling up before the starters even arrived. Also a silver platter of Veronese cookies comes out with your cheque, just in case you haven't had enough food!
Night one I elected for the seared scallops, which came with cream of rice, ginger, cardamom, toasted hazelnuts, and pomegranate. It was superb. The creamy sauce complemented the tender scallops perfectly. If I'm lucky enough to make my way back to Verona, this is the dish I want a reprise of.
I followed it up with the Gianduia mousse, accented with butterscotch salted caramel, eggnog, Modica dark chocolate, and candied orange. This was a delightful dessert, since it had so much going on - but everything melded together seamlessly.
Night two I started with the red prawn tartare, which came with burrata, chicory, and tomato confit. I'm not a huge shrimp or prawn fan, so I took a risk here and was so grateful that I did. It was sweet, light, and bright. Flavours flowed well together and I finished hankering for more.
My main was the grilled octopus, with dollops of lemon ricotta and pesto. My octopus was a little tough, which I know is a natural tendency of the meat. Nevertheless, the smoky crust worked great with both the buttery ricotta and earthy pesto. Maybe my least favourite dish of the four, but when your least favourite is still delectable, I think that warrants a 5-star rating. read more
