    Interior is fabulous

Spent a lovely 2 1/2 hours with owners Antonio and Simonetta Gioco, and son Filippo. Fabulous food by Mauro Buffo. A truly great restaurant run by great people. Terrific, entertaining wall paintings cover every inch with a 1925 interpretation of medieval themes. Everything soaked in local tradition, then amped with a surprise. Chef worked at Manressa; everyone knew Alice Waters. Simple ideas like trippe in a tomato mousse-thing with different discoveries (mint, a bean, a pepper, etc.) in each spoonful. Traditional gnocchi with a lamb ragu; except the gnocchi have no potato - ricotta and water and herbs and wow. A fish carpaccio with tomato aspic. A menu writer would make that sound like so much more - but the food would not be better. Risi bisi BUT with pan drippings from roasted rabbit. Beef cheeks were delicious but the least inventive. If it's not too busy, after lunch or dinner ask to see the ancient ruins below, discovered when the family was hand-digging to expand the wine cellar. Antonio is so proud!

Osteria del Bugiardo was located in a good area so we made our way over to this wine bar. Service (2.5/5): Confusing system. There was a wait for a table but no hostess outside. We eventually talked to someone and she said that while there's no list, she will remember our faces and let us know when a table is ready. Not the most efficient system but we waited about 10 minutes to be seated at the bar. Our waiter took care of us pretty well after we got in. Ambiance (3.5/5): Your typical wine bar. Nice ambiance. The only downside for me is that seating at the bar consisted of bar stools. Without back support. Which I have always hated and which hurts my back. It's also pretty tight in there when they're at capacity. Drinks (4/5): Since this is a wine bar, you know what to order. We had glasses of rose. Not the heaviest pour but the price was solid. If you're not looking for wine, they also have things like Aperol Spritz. Food (4/5): You won't find hearty fare here but you will be able to munch on a lot of small plates. I'm talking things like mini sandwiches, croquettes, meatballs, salads, etc. Which is exactly what we did. We shared a couple of tapas between the two of us. It was filling and did the job. I wasn't stuffed but it was good and on the healthier side. Overall: Osteria del Bugiardo is one of the most popular restaurants on Yelp in Verona and it's located in the heart of the city.

It was quiet when we arrived at noon and then filled up quite a lot by the time we departed. Clearly, a restaurant for the locals. First course, a big pile of a pasta called "bigolini" which I've not seen before. It is like thick spaghetti with a rough surface. That is needed because the sauce on it was quite thick and another interesting taste - nettles. Definitely different. Second course, risotto made with a red wine reduction. Very flavorful and rich and the pasta was perfectly al dente. We'll definitely need to return to here for dinner! [Review 16980 overall - 185 in Italy - 496 of 2022.]

The restaurant is very cute (free WiFi) and homey feeling with an exposed brick interior and interesting decoration choices throughout the space. If you're so inclined there's also and outdoor patio area. Maybe we just ordered poor menu items but the food was underwhelming and not particularly standout. For our anti pasta course we went with the cured meat trio with polenta. The meats weren't particularly good and combined with the bland polenta it just wasn't a good combo. For our primi pasta course we had the bigoli in a horse (yes horse) bolognese sauce. Of our three dishes this was the best. For our main meat course with did horse cheeks braised in an Amarone wine sauce with polenta. I didn't like the polenta any better on our second dish and the cheek just didn't do it for me. I ended up leaving the bulk of the dish uneaten. All in all-maybe I just ordered poorly but I if I ever make it back to Verona this spot will be a pass for me.

They have a nice garden terrace as well as a lovely dining room inside (with AC!). Started with mixed grilled vegetables and the house cured salmon which came with a bit of salad. They do have some pasta and specials of the day, but we all had pizza, of which there is a rather wide selection to choose from. I had the melanzane which was definitely the most delicious eggplant pizza I've ever had. My husband had the "Trentino" with had wild mushrooms, Emmentaler and speck. And my son had the Capricciosa (mix of various things including prosciutto, olives, artichokes, etc.) I tasted them all and they were all great. House wine: $12.50 for a liter. Awesome deal, very drinkable and went well with the pizza. Service was attentive and efficient. I hope to return while I am staying in Verona. It's a neighborhood gem with extremely reasonable prices, away from the tourist bustle of the centro historico.
