Maffei Plumbers are the best! So responsive when you need someone to fix a burst pipe or sump pump malfunction. Zach has helped us out twice in the last year and he's great! Very kind, knowledgeable, and clearly explains the options of what needs to be done now and his recommendation for other improvements that make sense to do while the system is drained or parts that can wait. I had leaks in my ceiling, which is right where our tub is. they sent someone who looked at it, said it needed a new valve and proceeded to sit in his truck (in my driveway) for hours. Came out, charged me $760, commented how my heating system was going to go when he went down to turn off water. He was rude, wreaked of cigarette smoke, and I would never call this place again. read more

Maffei=Mafia I called and they said $49 to come out and check but would be absorbed in the repair price. I had a toilet that needed a flange repaired. Quote $700 to remove toilet and wax seal and more to fix the flange. Are they serious?!! I also had a leak in my shower. To look for leak I had to guarantee to pay $325.00 to search for the leak but again would be absorbed into repair. It seemed to be the mixing valve cartridge . Quote to fix over $2000.00. Oh and he would have to come back Monday. No parts in the truck. No kidding, the only thing in that truck was a vault for the money they rob from people! I went to the plumbing store $45.00 for part all fixed! The Mafia left with $325.00 of my money ! read more

Maffei Gave us a bid to install a hybrid water heater - for 49.00, Kyle answered every question we had, thoughtfully, and several I never would have thought to ask. He ASSESSED our plumbing (pressure test, water quality test, thorough inspection of pipes.) He figured out why my existing heater failed, which was a HUGE help. This guy must have graduated at the top of his class, and he explains things very well. He didn't recommend things we don't need. Easily the best repairman we've had. (Haven't decided who we'll hire yet, getting 2 more bids.) Nov 6, 2020: Addendum after reviewing bid: Install of a 50 gallon Bradford-White hybrid water heater (piping, electrical), a pressure reducing valve and thermal expansion tank, a FloTech water softener: $8003.00 They "don't give itemized bids" so I'm sure there's a mistake. I can have the EXACT same machine shipped to me for 1500.00 from FaucetDepot. It's a very basic, and positively reviewed machine. 10 year warranty. Other models have leak detectors with shutoff and phone notification, duct kits, stainless steel tank, a separate heat pump that sits outside.... but Maffei only installs this one. HOW does (whoever Kyle spoke with in the truck while writing up the bid) justify that bid? Because if it's not a mistake (3 other bids were around 4-5k), it may be an attempt at price gouging, which may be illegal. I'll have to check on that. "Price gouging occurs when a seller increases the prices of goods, services or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair. Usually, this event occurs after a demand or supply shock. Common examples include price increases of basic necessities after natural disasters." 75% of water heater purchases are made under "emergency" conditions, since they do fail unexpectedly by leaking, and without them, no dishwasher or shower or....so it's a basic necessity, and 8k is much higher than reasonable. Perhaps a mistake? I did tell Kyle that Bev and I are both doctors ("we're careful about COvid"), and I'd hate to think that that influenced their pricing. What a shame, Kyle was beyond excellent and I'd hire him, if I sensed a REASONABLE profit margin. Car industry? 5%. Grocery stores? 2% I'd agree to a TWENTY percent profit margin, if an itemized bid reflected that. If I figure 12 hours labor, we are nowhere near 8 grand at twenty percent. Addendum Nov 7: I told Kyle that on the morning of nov 1, we woke to several inches of water in our basement, and full city water pressure spraying from the top of our water heater. (Maffei did not install it, I've had zero interaction or knowledge of Maffei prior). This was a painful disaster that took days to fix, and I did it myself. Pumps, a shop-vac, 3 powerful fans running for 3 days, a dehumidifier running. Soaked cardboard boxes holding items important to us. All laid out and visible to Kyle. He knows what we'd been through. Then an 8000.00 bid for a 1500.00 water heater, parts/labor, and 3 accessories. And their bid is DOUBLE the previous bids. These guys were supposed to fix the hot water issue in my house. The plumber was here for 3 hours doing the work and spent 95% of the time sitting in his truck. Needless to say, the issue wasn't fixed. They charged me 2 grand for something that should've cost a couple hundred and didn't even fix the issue. I'd demand that they come back but would rather just hire someone who's going to do the job right and not charge me an exorbitant amount for it. Avoid this company at all costs. read more

We had a had gas main line fixed by Kyle. He did not pull a permit (which is illegal), nor did he have the work inspected. Kyle actually acted surprised when National Grid would not turn the gas back on without those requirements being met. He ABSOLUTELY knew of those stipulations, or he SHOULD have known!!!! That is his area of "expertise" and what we paid him to know!! When I called him on it, he took offense & complained to the owner that I was dissatisfied/angry. The owner then suggested to my husband that he keep his wife in line. As if to suggest, I WAS IN THE WRONG for expecting them to do their job to completion! And THEN, after that, he actually asked me if I wanted him/them to do more work at my home. Really?? The gaul!!! Why would I let someone work on my home, who I did not/could not trust. Work was performed and was well done. I decided to call these guys when I couldn't get my regular plumber because he was booked out for weeks. They did a great job but were way overpriced. I'm sure if I waited I could've saved at least $500 probably more like $1,000. The gentleman was working for about three hours used about $25 worth of material. I was charged over $1700. Granted the work was good but way overpriced. I would only call these guys back in an emergency. This is the worse plumbing company I have ever hired. Due to shoddy mistakes made by their staff the entire new construction of a bathroom, kitchen and bar sink were ruined. Flooding occurred throughout and now I have mold issues that is still ongoing. All fixtures installed to the shower and sinks were not to code and I had to redo most of their work. These guys are crooks. Paid $400 to replace a condenser pump... took guy 15-30 minutes after I checked lowes and the pump was $40... then paid another 800 bucks to fix issue on 2nd unit. They didn't fix the issue after charging me the $1,200, came back a 2nd time and said a completely different part needed replacing and that would be another $700 (for a $70 motherboard on amazon btw). I wish I read the reviews before I called. It would have saved me a headache from a $5,000 quote about a problem that later turned out to just be a dirty filter. On Dec. 23rd, Jeremy, a serviceman, from Maffei came to my house to fix my furnace that was working intermittently. He removed the panel and after looking at it for 5 seconds announced, "This is a problem. This is a big problem." He pointed out a couple of rusty spots, said my condenser wasn't working and threw around some jargon. Then he explained to me that he could send someone back to run a diagnostic, but because my problem was so was so big that I would be better off getting a new furnace. He ran back to his truck to get a quote from his boss. In the meantime, I held down the button that is normally depressed by the doors and the furnace turned on. When Jeremy returned from the truck, he made sure I was still thinking about a new furnace and not a diagnostic before he handed me the estimate. The cheapest furnace that he quoted me would be $5,278. (Later I found it on the internet for $1975 plus $200 for shipping.) Then gave me a hard sales push. (To see the quote, click on my profile picture.) When I told him that I got the furnace to work while he was in the truck, he started to diagnose new problems. I sent Jeremy on his way. I called a more reputable company. The serviceman told me if your heater was working intermittently, that it could only be one problem, your filter.(Jeremy never even checked the filter.)He said if I couldn't change it myself, he would stop and do it on his way home, but I could call him either way. Sure enough, I changed the filter and it worked like a charm. I watched a quick youtube video on how to fix the condenser. I wiggled the flapper, jiggled the hose and it went ON, for free. No need to pay Maffei's $348 replacement cost or their $111 drain line clear fee. When I called Maffei's office, the man on the phone was respectful but would not refund my money. His explanation for the lack of refund was..."we came to you house!" Yes, they did come to my house, and yes, they stole $50 from me. Save yourself a headache and the 50 bucks. Maffei Plumbing and HVAC company (Rowley, MA). Have been their customer for about 4 years ($132 annual contract fee). My opinion - highly NOT recommended. Here is why... Last straw came in February this year when our heating system stopped working. I called MAFFEI and their guy showed up in few hours and in first half an hour identified the problem - several components needed to be replaced. He had to wait for an hour for necessary parts to be delivered and another 45 minutes to make everything work again (his words). Total visit time - three hours. Bill total - $1498.00. To be fair - he quoted the price before doing the repairs. But what choice did we have with single digits weather? Say "no" and call another company and waste few more hours without any guarantee for a better price? In cases like ours (most common) those HVAC guys have you over the heater... We agreed, of course. Few days later came the bill and I had the opportunity to look at it closer: three parts have been replaced: water pump, water switch and "combo fill and backflow preventer". Checked their retail pricing - total for all three is in $200 - $400 range, depending on the particular vendor. Keep in mind that HVAC company cost is much lower than retail price you pay. Anyway, entire job was completed in under 3 hours, including waiting time. Even if you charge $100 an hour for labor, bill still should've been in $500 - $700 range. So, that is a $1000 rip off, in my view. And I have an ultimate proof that it's their standard practice! Couple years before (November 2019), when we were already under the contract with MAFFEI, heater stopped working (I was at work, but my wife was at home). Technician showed up, found the problem, fixed it and gave my wife a bill - for over $2,000! This time he made a "mistake" of fixing it before quoting the price. My wife (she is an electronics engineer with over 30 years of experience) noted the replacement part number on its box and checked its price on web - it was around $500. Finding that out, she flatly refused to pay over $2,000 for a part that cost under $500 and job that took under one hour! The guy called MAFFEI headquarters and after brief conversation he asked my wife: "And what would you consider a fair price?" She replied that, considering everything, it would be twice the price of replacement part - around $1000 (final total was $1049.00) - and they immediately agreed to that! Now you see it: MAFFEI easily dropped $1000 (!!!) from their initial charge and still made a very good profit! (Much more than they deserved, if you ask me!) And what would've happened if my wife wasn't experienced in technical aspects or couldn't get the part numbers to check the cost, as it happened last time? The answer is obvious... After latest encounter with MAFFEI I called them and asked for the bill breakdown: parts' cost plus labor. Their response - we don't breakdown parts and labor, we charge for the job! And that's how they rip you off. Because when you are charged for the "job" they lump together part's cost (heavily marked up, but you don't know that!) and labor, which they always count as 8 hours (with its price also a secret!), even if it took only half an hour. When it's just one "job"/part replacement, then your bill would be still much overpriced, but might be not insanely so. But if you had to replace multiple pars ("jobs"), as in my last case - that's when you get really screwed, because not only you are paying huge mark-ups on parts, but you are also paying for 8 hours of labor on each of them! Three parts - 24 hours of labor charge! That's why $300 in parts and couple hours in labor results in $1500 bill. You may wonder - why you didn't drop them after the first time? Answer - I'm lazy!!! My shower was leaking so I called Maffei and Gata came down the next day. Fixed my shower and went through the house to check to see if anything else was wrong with my plumbing. My house is getting old and needed more plumbing work. Gata explained everything to me, gave me an estimate and came back a few days later and fixed everything that needed to be done in one day. I would not hire these guys back ever again. After a heating system service and diagnostic they discovered after the fact a broken motor which cost me almost $900 plus 500$ for the original routine servicing. They had to come out a third time because after not rerunning diagnostics crazy amounts of water build up shut the system down again. At the very least careless hvac diagnostics mixed with over the top prices. Sketchy at best not even certain they didn't break the motor while servicing the system leading to $1400. Have used Maffei in the past with success...but not this time and probably not using them again. No heat in my upstairs for two weeks and can't get anyone to follow up without harassing them. They may be flat out and really busy, not sure, but they should have been clear that they simply don't have time for my business and passed. We had two leaking outdoor faucets replaced. One would expect to pay $200 to $300. The parts cost $50 each wholesale. The person was here for 1 hour. After he was done, my husband noted that the faucet was still dripping. The person went back and fixed it. In the end, it cost us $860. My husband paid the bill and never told me because he was too embarrassed to mention it to me. I feel that we were ripped off. We were planning on having a new furnace installed but have decided to go elsewhere after reading these reviews online and our own personal experience. read more

We called Maffei to do two minor toilet repairs. These repairs required installing of new tank parts--the kind you can pick up at Lowes or Home Depot for $60 max. We didn't have time to do the self-replacement and were willing to pay for the plumber to do it. However, Maffei quoted $682 to repair each toilet. So the previous reviewer who said their prices were outrageous is correct. If most plumbers charge around $120 per hour for work, they're essentially saying that they need 5 hours to do a tank-kit replacement! 5 hours @ $120 per hour = $600. Then add $60 for the kit = $660. And their quote is actually even more than this! I strongly recommend you DON'T use this company as they're taking advantage of their customers and their rates are completely unreasonable. (They also quoted $1747 to install two new toilets, and I received a quote from another company for less than half this.) read more

Predatory Company, do not use! I will start with the positives, they were courteous and professional. Our gas stove needed to be disconnected and then we required a reconnection once our new stove arrived. Usually you would do this as one call but our old range was leaking gas so it was a safety issue. The tech who showed up quoted us $858 dollars!!! We opted to have him simply disconnect the unit which cost us $299 for 20 minutes of work. We used a different plumber to reconnect, he charged us $100 and it took 20 min. Called this place because they were 24 hours. They were going to charge us $50 for coming out plus $300 just for a service on our hvac system. While the guy was writing a quote I called another place down the street the same service was $130, total! I was beside myself. Not to mention the tech that came out could not have been older than 17, came in with no tools, and asked us how to turn the unit on. I was very happy with my service experience. I had an incident over the weekend and someone was in my home within a short period of time which was much appreciated. you always worry when something in your home isn't right so having a professional come so quickly on a Sunday is so important. The next day I was a high priority and they came right back and they not only fixed my issue but went above and beyond by adding some valve tags throughout my mechanical room to allow me to better understand where everything is for future reference. CROOKS!! Maffei installed our furnace 8 years ago and we asked about the steam coming out with the exhaust, they assured us that was normal. We lived with that for years, finally we called them out on it and they said we had a cracked heat exchanger in the furnace...essentially the furnace needed to be replaced. Note...this was defective on day one! They installed a new heat exchanger costing me $9800 on my 8 year old furnace. At that time they replaced the draft inducer motor, costing me $1200 (the part is $511 on line), we paid for the replacement. That was in April 2021, in October 2021 the same part is leaking CO and they are looking to charge $1200 again. So they decided that despite having about a month runtime on the fan, they would not only NOT treat this as warranty, they would MARK UP the repair that was not done correctly in the first place. We have had nothing but problems with this and they keep charging. read more

I called maffei to get a quote to eliminate one radiator from one wall of my kitchen and install a new one on another. I had my own contractor so all they had to do was hook up the new heater and complete the circuit where the old one was. They quoted me over $3400! I was expecting around$1000 our so based on hours it would probably take. The technician was very nice and put booties on over his shoes. However, before he left he was trying to get a quote on a radiator for the wall (we realized the old one was too big to go on the wall we wanted the new radiator to go on) and said he would would call me back with a more exact quote later that day. Unfortunately he never called back. My contractor friend from NY (Bell builders if you are in the Schoharie Valley Region) ended up doing the whole job, which was removing the old radiator and opening up the wall where the radiator was to connect our kitchen to another adjacent room, putting in a new set of doors to go from our kitchen to the deck, buying the new heater and putting it on the new walk, and completing the circuit where the old radiator was. This all for less than $2500. I asked my cousin's father about this too since he has been a contractor for a few decades and he was shocked at the quote. All this is to say be careful with these guys and try to find a more honest business. read more

This is the worst company I've ever dealt with. They are unprofessional hacks and totally unethical. From a $1,875 rough/finished bathroom plumbing job written in my contract they jumped to $10,000 the day the work was to begin with the reason "we didn't realize I lived so far away..." I'm about 40 min. drive from their place. The owner Greg refused to help answer any of my questions while I was buying the plumbing fixtures, and kept telling me everything I had was fine. NOT -- the day of the job they told me there was a part missing that I had to scramble, order and put the job on hold for over two weeks while waiting for it to arrive. Then instead of checking to verify whether they could put the waste pipe behind the vanity wall, they simply said there wasn't enough room, and that it would have to go through two sets of my new very expensive cabinetry. When I refused to pay over 100% on the original price they left and I found another plumber who measured and told me (without me asking) that the waste pipe would go behind the wall, saving unnecessary destruction of my cabinets. When I told the new plumber that I thought this couldn't be done, his response was that of course it could and doing it any other way would be a "hack job". Be safe - DO NOT USE THESE HACKS p.s. This company had good customer service and the service tech, Aaron, was friendly and respectful, cleaned up nicely. Now for the negative, I forwarded the invoice to a friend who is a plumber in another part of the state and he told me I was horribly overcharged, his words exactly - "robbed". He said by at least 30% which was $500. The tech shows you the charges on an ipad and you really don't get an idea of what charge is for which service. read more

We had a leak in our kitchen sink and we were worried about it so he called them because they were down the street and we wanted to support local business. We were in a tough spot and didn't have many options. With no other option we went with them and here is how much it cost. They came to fix a leaky kitchen sink. They replaced 3 shutoff valves under our sink and put in a new faucet that we provided. -Install of faucet $373 (we bought it and gave it to them to install) - replaced 2 shutoff valves $397 - replaced 1 main shutoff valve $99 -service charge $49 Total $918 for 2-3 hours of their time. Work was good. Would not do it again because it seems like we were taken advantage of. It's our fault for paying it because they gave us a quote and we went with it because we were in a tough spot. I used Maffei a few years ago and had an positive experience, so when I wanted a new kitchen faucet installed I thought it would be fine. I could not have been more wrong! I never realized how many issues one faucet could cause. The water did not reach the drain which caused it to splash everywhere whenever I turned it on. The hot water was suddenly very cloudy and the calibration of the hot/cold flow was off. Washing just one dish would soak all the surrounding countertops. I was wasting a roll of paper towels a day. Maffei came out several times to "try" and solve the problem to no avail. The gentleman on the phone basically said I was making it up and implied that it was somehow my fault and I was costing them too much money. Their final solution was to turn the water pressure down so low that it took forever to even wash my hands. I voiced my concerns that not enough water was causing my garbage disposal to make strange noises and of course I was shot down. When my garbage disposal started leaking the other day I knew better than to call Maffei. I ended up calling another plumber who replaced the faucet and garbage disposal. What a complete hassle and waste of my time and money! I basically paid hundreds of dollars for nothing. Anyone looking for a plumber should look elsewhere. read more

Horrible customer service and over priced! I had a water heater replaced a year ago, 6 months after that I received a called to set up an appointment for it to be inspected. After several attempts to set up this appointment and finally making the appointment, they were a no show. I called to set up another appointment. Dave told me he would get back to me the following week to set up another appointment. He never set up the appointment, but left me a message the next week to tell me they came by with an inspector and I wasn't home. My water heater still hasn't been inspected! I set up an appointment last week for today at 12:30 to fix my air conditioner. As I was on my way out the door at 9:00am and I received a call they were on their way over. I had to rearrange my morning. 2 hours later I was told there maybe a leak in the duct work, but he wasn't sure. I was given a card to call another company. After wasting my time and rearranging my day my air conditioner is not fixed and they aren't really sure what is wrong with it. The technician left my basement door wide open, which I didn't realize until much later in the day. The customer service is horrible and the services are extremely expensive. read more

Big mistake , when i called for service on my hvac heat pump unit because the a/c was not working i was told there we be a 49$ service charge to" Look at it" and that was exceltly what the Tect did, looked at it . then i was told by the Tect that if there would be a 245$ charge to find the problem . he didn't find the problem as to why the fan was not turning and i was charged a total 304$ . read more
