Unfortunately about six months ago I experienced a significant accident that led to a devastating injury. In early June, I fell from a 35 foot embankment into the ground below. The ensuing fall caused me to shatter my right elbow, which required immediate reconstructive surgery. During the fall I also hit my head and suffered a significant concussion. Over the subsequent two months I received multiple surgeries and was limited to bed rest while in a cast. Eventually the cast was removed and the surgeon urged me to enroll in physical therapy as soon as possible. I am a fairly active 22 year old male, and I am right arm dominant. Thus this injury was crushing to me, I considered it catastrophic. I have never broken anything, and for me being in such an accident was a novel experience. After being out of the cast my arm felt incredibly weak/stiff, and my mobility was extremely limited. The only bright side of my accident was that occurred during the summer, I am currently a graduate student at Boston College. A speedy recovery, with maximum rehabilitation, and no set backs, was ideal. Following my doctors advice, I made an appointment with the Brighton Location of Boston Sports Medicine. This turned out to be great advice. Given my activity levels I have undergone PT for other nagging injuries before and am familiar with the process, although I have never suffered a traumatic physical injury such as the one I experienced. BSM-Brighton exceeded previous care that I have received, and I always felt like I was being treated exceptionally. The first session I met with Andrew Provost, the Director of the Brighton location and several others. During the first session I was asked extensively about my injury and Andrew helped create a comforting dialogue focused around what my goals and limitations were. I felt heard and treated with the sensitivity I was looking for. He was honest and informative to the best of his ability, and I was encouraged to continue returning. I continued to go to BSM over the course of my recovery process, which took approximately 3 months. I mostly worked with Andrew, although when he took a leave of absence for his wedding I also worked with Ashlin who was just as exceptional. As time went on I felt my range of motion and mobility returning, and Andrew taught me more and more appropriate exercises as my comfort/ability gradually rose. One of the greatest advantages to getting PT at BSM is that they explain the exercises to you and why they are assigning them. The therapists are clearly informed, and it is additionally helpful that they explain to you what they hope each set of exercises will accomplish. Of course, they emphasize following the instructions and diligently doing the exercises for best results. Recovering from an injury such as the one I experienced requires consistent attention to relevant PT exercises, and acknowledgement of ones own limitations as not to push things too far causing a setback. Not only do I feel like BSM was careful to adhere to these principles, but they also helped teach me how to better adhere to them myself on my own time. I doubt my arm would be where it is today without the help of Andrew, Ash, and the entire BSM staff. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect with physical therapy after my surgery for 4 fractures to my right ankle and leg, but based on the good reviews and convenient location, I chose Boston Sports Medicine (Allston). I love this place. The first day I crutched in, the receptionist helped to open the door for me. I was given an appointment with Julia, and she performed a thorough consultation to find out the background and healing options for my ankle and leg. In addition to the PT sessions, Julia gave me exercises and stretches to perform at home and thoroughly explained what to expect, what to watch for, and never failed to answer my frequent barrage of questions. PT is never a walk in the park (that damn foam roll--you know what I'm talking about; you've seen those styrofoam cores innocently lying around the stretching area of your gym--initially doles out excruciating pain), yet, when your sessions are conducted by someone who genuinely cares about your treatment, takes a multi-faceted approach to the problem, has a great sense of humor, and encourages you every step of the way, you find yourself actually looking forward to your PT sessions! Julia's patients represent wide spectrums of activity level (from professional athletes to folks recovering from severe trauma), age, and attitude: and she is amazing with each individual. I couldn't be happier with my progress. I have nothing but resounding praise for Julia's abilities and I recommend anyone with a PT prescription to pay a visit to BSM (Allston). The office is easily reached (with Parking... a plus for me) and the staff is absolutely wonderful, patient, friendly, and extremely helpful. Boston Sports Medicine is excellent in all aspects. I've treated there for various issues, initially receiving therapy for repetitive strain and a frozen shoulder several years ago - both with successful resolution. After arm & leg surgery in August 2011 that resulted in significant complications I returned. Dr. Erin Looney performed magic! After several months of therapy on both arms for scar tissue and nerve damage, I was still in significant pain, enough so that I was unable to sleep through the night. Erin tried various approaches. While there was some improvement, after a few months of treatment, it looked as if there were no other options and I was told that I would have to terminate. Erin continued to research, and a few weeks later had me return for a new treatment that produced amazing results. Without the cupping treatment, I would have become significantly limited in the use of my arms. I'm not only pain-free and back to normal range of motion, I've been inspired to begin and maintain a new life style. Early on in therapy, they had me walking in the Aqua pool since I also had swelling in my legs from the surgery. I initially went 5 days a week, then 3 days before joining a health club and beginning Aqua aerobics. It was a turning point. I'm exercising regularly now and LOVE it, and about to participate in my 2nd 5K run/walkathon on September 23. Since I'm in my 60s, and just began any kind of regular exercise 9 months ago, this is no small feat and doable because of the continual support and encouragement of Erin, and other BSM therapists, Stacy and Kathy. Erin has been kind, caring, and skillful. I am so grateful for her treatment and for Boston Sports Medicine. Thank you Boston Sports Medicine Allston/Brighton, 10 months ago I fell 17 feet off scaffolding breaking my body in several places including vertebrae in my spine. With high recommendations, I hobbled through the doors of Boston Sports Medicine Allston/Brighton and into the care of Michelle Perry. The severity and complications from multiple injuries as well as the fragility of my entire being presented Michelle and I with a challenging and arduous road ahead. Michelle formulated a care plan that had me start with baby steps in the therapy pool, helping me develop my strength and confidence quickly. With Michelle's plan, in the water I could do exercises that I could not even imagine on land. In time, with her skilled care involving many modalities of treatment and other team members ( Michelle R and Ashlyn) a lot of support ( from everyone), coaching, and a lot of hard work I graduated to land exercises and made my way back to good health. I'm happy and proud to say, phew, that yesterday was my last day!!! I honestly did not think I'd see his day. But Michelle did and now under her care...I have made it. I have recovered!! ...mostly ( I have shoulder surgery to go) and she gave me lots of homework to keep getting stronger. But when my surgery happens, I will go right back to Michelle Perry and the team at Boston Sports Medicine Allston/Brighton to recover. I have come so far in their excellent care. I first went to Boston Sports Medicine in Allston, MA for a strained hip flexor last year. At that time, I couldn't really run and was pretty miserable about the constant soreness in my hip. I worked with Mike, with Jennifer Mohns and with Stacey Choquette and I cannot even express how grateful I am for all that they have done for me. Mike worked with me initially but then Jenny and Stacy were my regular PTs and they were both absolutely awesome. I have nothing but the highest praise for both Jenny and Stacey - they used a variety of techniques to work on my hips (and later this year on my feet for plantar fasciitis), and they had me back up and running and competing in half-marathons in a couple of months. They not only know exactly what to do and how to best work with your body, but they are so accommodating and really care about you and that you improve. They were always so excited when I reported back with any improvements, and provided constant follow-up, feedback and advise. Jennie even emailed me some extra ankle exercises to do at home when I strained a tendon in my ankle - not severely enough to warrant PT sessions, but enough to need strengthening, and the exercises have been great in helping me gain some more strength. As someone who works out and has been through various injuries, I can say without any reservations that BSM has the best PTs - and if you go then definitely ask for Jenny Mohns and Stacey Choquette. They'll have you back up and working out again in no time, and they'll follow up to make sure you're doing ok after finishing your sessions! read more

I was riding my bike to work when I got hit by a car and broke my leg (tibia and fibula). I've been coming to Boston Sports Medicine twice a week since July, and I can't say enough good things about this place. I didn't really know what to expect from physical therapy, since I'd never needed it before, but I got a good vibe from this place instantly. The staff is incredibly friendly and I immediately felt welcomed. You can tell they all enjoy what they do, and working together, which fosters a really positive environment for patients. I've formed a great relationship with my physical therapist, Kathy, who carefully tailored a plan to my injury and to my own specific goals. She's always able to answer my questions, and provide additional info about the exercises and my bones and muscle groups, all while taking a sincere interest in my recovery and making the visits fun. Her care has definitely helped me get back on track ahead of schedule. The office is small and often busy, but never seems overcrowded, and is always very clean. They've got a full arsenal of exercise equipment and tools (from treadmills to yoga mats and medicine balls), plus two therapy pools with underwater treadmills. (Seriously the coolest thing ever.) I really enjoy going. I know I'm not just healing and getting stronger, but learning a lot about how to properly exercise and take care of myself for the rest of my life. I'll be sad when I'm finally discharged! If I ever need physical therapy again while I'm living in Boston, I know I'm coming back here. read more

As a squash pro and avid athlete, I need all my limbs and joints working at the highest level. Six months ago, I was suffering from inflamed stabilizer muscles around my right patella, compounded by tendonitis in that same knee. After working at Boston Sports Medicine for a short time, I was recovered enough to start exercising again. Then, on a vacation trip, some family and I climbed Wright Peak, number 16 on the Adirondack High Peaks list. The majority of the 3.8-mile climb is moderate grade, though most of that is over treacherous rocks instead of smooth dirt. The last mile is extremely steep, and the last half mile is one brutally tough rock face. I made it to the top in an hour and 45 minutes of hard, exhausting, and almost continual hiking, and I didn't feel any pain or discomfort in my knee. The way down was equally treacherous, but still nothing in that knee after another hour and 45. That climb was perhaps the best testament I could have found to prove how far both of the injuries to my right knee have improved. Everyone I worked with at BSM did a phenomenal job getting me back healthy, able to get back on the squash court, and now able to push myself for three hours like I did that day, and I'm ecstatic about it. I am a very active marathon runner, running multiple full and half marathons every year, and constantly put strain on my body because of the sport. Due to issues with my knees and feet (patella tendon tendonitis and plantar fasciitis), I have been working with Jenny for a number of years now. She always works to keep me on the road, by teaching me rigorous stretching and exercising techniques, to help further prevent recurring injuries to my troubled areas. While at Boston Sports Medicine, I take advantage of the HydroWorx pool with a built-in treadmill, allowing for impact free running. Once warmed up, Jenny always has me stretch properly with the tools available onsite, before we do our hands-on work. This hands-on work being; Graston therapy, light massage, electro stimulation, and laser therapy. With the complexity of the muscles and everyone's individual body and needs, Jenny always inquires about my recent work outs and physical activities, and provides the proper course necessary to safely treat my injuries. The positive and friendly attitude of all the employees that I have dealt with, help to provide a fun, educational, and motivational atmosphere to keep me on track with my recovery. read more

I didn't use BSM for PT, rather I participated in the aqua natal exercise program offered by Stacy Choquette in the Allston office. I went once a week starting at 13/14 weeks through most of my third trimester. The program is great. You work with Stacy who develops a personalized exercise program for you. The pools are individual so you are working one on one. There is a treadmill so you can do gentle walking in the pool. Being in the pool while pregnant, especially as you get further along is wonderful. The buoyancy offers nice relief during the later weeks of pregnancy and you get exercise at the same time! I don't know if it was the pool or if I was just lucky, but also supposedly being in the water helps with swelling and blood circulation and I didn't swell at all during my entire pregnancy. The aquanatal is a great program to add to your exercise regimen while pregnant! I also used the chiropractic services offered by Dr. Mael who works out of the same office. He doesn't specialize in pregnancy, but helped relive some back and hip pain I was having related to pregnancy. It's wonderful to have both services offered in one place so that you could get adjusted then hop into the pool. read more

Stacy is wonderful and I highly recommend her. I've been seeing her for a couple months now for torn ligaments in my ankle. Not only is she highly knowledgeable, but she really listens to you to come up with the next best steps to take in your treatment. I really trust her expertise in designing the right programs for me, and I have a complete sense that she cares about my progress and recovery as much as I do. You don't find that with everyone, but with her, it's absolutely the case. She's very encouraging, which helps push me to work harder at perfecting the exercises she gives me. She also is very accomodating of my schedule, which helps, being a working professional with a busy schedule. On top of all of that, she's a really fun, nice person. More broadly speaking, the facility itself is very clean, comfortable and convenient to get to, with parking available right out front every time I've gone at least (typically weekdays, early morning). Overall, I could not more highly recommend Boston Sports Medicine, and particularly, Stacy, for top quality physical therapy services. read more

I use Yelp all the time to find the highest recommended businesses and services. I rarely write Yelp reviews, but David at Boston Sports Medicine is great. I went to Boston Sports Medicine after seeing an ortho about what I feared to be a knee bursitis. I've been through a lot of PT before thanks to two torn ACLs and a partial foot ligament tear. I met with David who did a thorough assessment of the condition of my knee. Not only did I find him to be totally honest, but I was so surprised to learn how well he knew the ins and outs of my health care coverage! He recommended PT only once or twice (so as to not waste my coverage plan options) and gave me excellent advice about to protect my knee in my upcoming rugby game. After that, we got to work on moving the swelling out of my knee and what to do on my own. A week later, I was good to go! On top of all of this, David followed up with me via email to check in on my knee. Bottom line: go see David! He's fantastic, has great in-depth knowledge about athletic training, and is a genuine guy to boot. read more

I have been in the healing process from a herniated Lumbar Disc and in traditional PT at a different location for many months. With continual flare ups, it was recommended that I stop PT to see if these episodes would cease and my pain decrease. The symptoms were reduced. After a rest and In order to restart the strengthening process, my neurologist recommended water therapy. It was in this search that I discovered Dr David P. Merson at Boston Sports Medicine. After an extensive evaluation, David was able to diagnose certain problems and come up with a treatment plan that is working and helping me become pain free. David is a true miracle worker! He is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about body mechanics and explains with confidence the reasoning behind all the exercises and maneuvers. Pairing his knowledge, his compassion and his ability and willingness to truly look at you as a human being who is in need of physical help is a great gift to us as patients. David should definitely be considered if you are looking for a great Physical Therapist. read more

I live a pretty active lifestyle (tennis, snowboarding, lifting) and as such have had my fair share of injuries. I've seen plenty of orthopedic doctors, chiropractors, and other physical therapists in multiple states for bunch of injuries (sprained ankles, sprained wrists, twisted backs, plantar fasciitis, etc.) Before going to Boston Sports Medicine, my previous visits to other places only provided temporary care. I can firmly say that getting treated at Boston Sports Medicine was one of the best decisions of my life. I've been seeing Andrew Provost and there aren't enough good things I can say about him. Aside from how friendly and professional he is, Andrew has helped me identify the problem areas of my body, and given me the tools to treat myself in the days when I'm not there. He's always willing to check and treat any ailment I have (or think I have). I have used Boston Sports Medicine over the last two years to help me with running injuries and have been to multiple locations, but mostly the Allston location. I have found them to be the most knowledgeable and most effective at diagnosing and then working on my injuries. The approach with me was not the typical - do not run - but was run, with these modifications and with the exercises, stretching, etc proscribed. They worked with me to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it. I had seen Orthopedic specialist who just said - don't run or seems like tendinitis - versus working to solve the problem. They helped me through a stress reaction in my hip (pool running and other things were used) as well as issues in various muscle groups in my legs (marathoner). The office is clean, busy, and very professional, while still very personable. I highly recommend them and will skip the other steps in the process from here on out and go there at the first sign of issues. read more

I can't say enough positive things about Boston Sports Medicine, and Dr. Michelle Perry and Dr. Aisling O'Sullivan Roche, in particular. I have been a patient there for two separate running injuries incurred during marathon training, and I have not only finished each marathon, but also PR'd both times by over ten minutes! Michelle and Aisling are truly committed to healing their patients and addressing the root of the problem. I have been to other PT's in the Boston area where they give you a few exercises and send you on your way, only for the injury to come back months later. At Boston Sports Medicine, both Michelle and Aisling helped figure out what was causing my injuries and implemented a number of treatments including strength exercises, massage, cupping, dry needling, and even running on their underwater treadmill. In August I managed to break my arm while on vacation in Hungary. While I did get treatment at an emergency room, I was not seen by an orthopedist until 2 weeks later and did not start PT until the following week. I had felt that I was behind in my recovery when I started working with Meaghan H. at BSM. Meaghan was wonderful to work with as we went from recovering movement and flexibility to strength. We used different exercises and equipment over time as I improved. Meaghan never pushed me more than I could handle - indeed she stopped me at times to make sure I didn't do too much and cause a setback. Throughout the time we worked together Meaghan was a total professional and made the experience as enjoyable as possible. I am now pain-free, have full movement and full strength as well. I highly recommend Meaghan and BSM for PT (in fact, I'm going back to them for a knee problem I developed) PS - BSM is easily reachable by public transportation. read more

This was my first experience with physical therapy, but I can say it was amazing. I was seen for hip flexor tendonitis and was feeling bummed about my ability to get back into running. The staff (especially my therapist - Erin) were positive and supportive throughout the process, and they helped me overcome the mental hurdles to recovery as well as the physical ones - and the mental ones can certainly be bigger! As far as the therapy itself, the office was well-equipped, neat, and clean. They have 2 big pools for aquatic therapy, which was amazing! The therapists always check in with how you are doing each session, and they seem to really customize and change your treatment according to what you need. They were always able to answer my questions and seemed knowledgeable. I can't really say anything bad about my experience. I would certainly go back if I needed further help, and I would recommend this place to anyone. read more

I'm truly grateful to have received physical therapy services at BSM Allston. I saw Dr. O'Sullivan Roche in the fall of 2016-winter 2017 after losing significant calf/hip strength due to years of distance running. Through therapy she helped me regain my strength and more, allowing me to train comfortably again and complete a half marathon that spring. Over the summer of 2017 I suffered from a posterior tibial tendinitis injury that occurred during marathon training, causing me to seek therapy again. I was barely able to run, and every step I took hurt. With Dr. O'Sullivan Roche's help, as well as new therapy techniques, my injury was healed within a couple months, and I've been fine since! Running is certainly more comfortable, and I am back to running longer distances. Along with the therapy services, the staff at BSM Allston are friendly, making each session an enjoyable experience. Went here due to a shoulder injury (I've had a few of them) and worked with Jenny Mohns. She was great and got me back to gym working out and playing sports again. She always listened to how I said my arm felt and adjusted our program accordingly when we needed to try something new, and she kept me positive when I got frustrated. I actually enjoyed when I went in for PT instead of it being a pain. They have some of the newest equipment to help with healing and all the assistants were so nice and so helpful as well. It's great to work with someone who you are really confident knows what they are doing. I noticed drastic improvement from when I started. She always answered my emails promptly with any questions I had and still follows up with me every so often. I hope to never have to see Jenny again due to an injury, but if I do something stupid again, I'll be right back there in a second. read more
