I had such a wonderful meal at this little place in Toledo. I wasn't expecting to find a vegetarian restaurant in this small little town, but I guess with the amount of tourism the place gets it makes sense. I had the spaghetti with vegetable Bolognese and it was excellent. Perhaps even more, the sangria was amazing. One of the best glasses of wine I've ever had. It's hard to find restaurants in Spain with a lot of vegetarian options let alone an entire restaurant of options. We really enjoyed the meal--the appetizers were particularly good! Best meal of our trip and a crazy bargain. This is first class vegetarian food, focussed on the flavours and textures of vegetables and in some dishes eggs and cheese. It goes way beyond just cooking traditional dishes with fake meat. The menu has a surprisingly broad selection, the dishes are clever and the execution is technically very good. The next time we are passing through Madrid and have a free evening, we will take the train to Toledo for a meal at Madre Tierra then go back to Madrid. Highly recommended. read more

Of all the cities I visited in Spain, I did the least research on Toledo. (We were only there for an afternoon.) I had several places bookmarked, but didn't really make any notes on them. So when we approached Madre Tierra, I had no idea it was a vegetarian place. Back home, that would send me scurrying away, but my fiancee lamented how much she missed vegetables after so many nights of the holy tapas trilogy of meat and carbs and oil. I relented and we went inside. I was pleasantly surprised that Madre Tierra was the kind of vegetarian restaurant that actually offered some tasty flavors for people who like more than a bowl of twigs. I had the arribiata (spicy) pizza (10.40 €) and really liked it. We also started with some veggie dumplings (10.90 €) that blew me away with flavor. Because we were so stuffed from the day's meals, we ended up boxing up the pizza and taking it back to the hotel. It held up as cold breakfast the next morning. With wine and water our total tab for two was 42.20 €. Normally, I wouldn't be caught dead in a vegetarian restaurant, but Madre Tierra has an extensive menu with things even the most voracious carnivore could enjoy. One weird thing about Madre Tierra - the hand driers in the bathroom are not plugged in. There was some kind of air freshener thing in the only outlet. Am I supposed to unplug that, then stretch the hand drier cord over the sink with wet hands? Bizarre. Also, they have motion sensors in the bathroom, so if you're not moving, the lights go out. Like all the reviews here below, we concur you will find this a welcome oasis of clean healthy eats in an otherwise tapa filled city. A beautiful warm atmosphere of bohemian chic welcomes you into a feast for your senses. Seven years of trajectory makes this a seamlessly run kitchen and dining area. We are on a clean diet of raw food and though they offer cheeses and dishes with dairy and eggs we stuck to the mostly raw unprocessed dishes, which were satisfying to the belly. Delicious food and great service. I had the courgettes with emmenthal and Gorgonzola sauce, and my husband had the mushroom lasagne. Both were very tasty! The seeded rolls were a nice change from the typical white bread we have served at most Spanish restaurants. Our waitress spoke English (she taught herself listening to music and watching shows), and engaged with us in conversation - initiated by my husband. :) The ambiance is a little upscale, but I felt comfortable just in my summer daytime wear. It was good to see a vegetarian place in Toledo. This place is close to cathedral and we came here just as they were opening for lunch. When we entered the restaurant there was a weird offensive smell which made me think not to eat here, but once we were seated, it seemed ok. We ordered vegetarian Croquettes and arrabbiata pizza. Everything is vegetarian and the 'meat' is made from soy. The croquettes were good but needed a little more seasoning and some dipping sauce. I liked the pizza. Crust was crispy and sauce tasted great. It was a bit oily but overall good flavor. They don't provide tap water here as the water is not clean. We ordered fruit tea instead. They have extensive list of teas and coffee. The server got us a couple of potatoes with pesto sauce and they were good. He then asked if we want bread. Please note that they charge ~1€ for this bread. They don't mention anything about charge and the bread doesn't come with any oil/butter. The restaurant is a little pricey but I guess Toledo is very touristy and this is expected. read more

Of all the places we ate, this was my favorite in Toledo. It is a beautiful, sophisticated, relaxing space. We'd had a long day without lunch and arrived a few minutes before the doors opened. They were kind enough to let us come in and sit at a table even though the kitchen wasn't technically open yet. I had the Cheese Tiritaina salad and a bowl of soup. Both were delicious. My husband had an avocado roll. Equally good. I love tapas but I'd had a two week diet of many fried tapas. I was so happy to have something that was so tasty and fresh. read more

As one of the only vegetarian places in a town, or the only vegetarian place in a town, which seems to be the case with Toledo, you have the opportunity to be truly unique and fantastic. This is not the case with Madre Tierra, unless you enjoy paying a premium for Sangria that comes from a bottle, and vegetable risotto that has less flavor than a touristy vegetable paella. The waiter is also pretty bad, unable to answer even the most basic questions about the food. When we asked him for olive oil (twice) we waited forever for him to bring it, only for him to pull it from a shelf that was right behind us. This was a wonderful surprise to find, and a welcome break from the seemingly unending parade of tapas restaurants that all serve pretty much the same items. It is recommended in the Rick Steves guidebook, so we gave it a try for lunch. We were welcomed by a very friendly hostess/server who spoke very little English (and we speak very little Spanish), so she gave us the Spanish menu and the English menu, plus a little pocket translation dictionary. We did our best to order in Spanish and she was patient with us. Our meals were absolutely incredible. I ordered the tofu and mushroom croquettes which were served with a light basil pesto. Mouth-watering! The bread was "gratis" and served with fragrant Spanish olive oil. I enjoyed this restaurant and wish we encountered more like it during our trip to Spain! read more

Western Europe is often the toughest place to find food while traveling, and Spain -- especially with its emphasis on jamon! -- is no exception. As a result, we were thrilled to find this all-veg restaurant in the small city of Toledo. The seitan cordon bleu was my highlight, but even the relatively simple Madre Tierra salad was delightful. The only vegetarian restaurant I could find in the whole of Toledo - the alternative would have been a vegetable paella in one of these ultra-touristy cafés. This place is huge! I went late in the afternoon so it wasn't very busy. Service was excellent and so was my Mousaka with Seitan (though, come to think of it, seitan cubes wouldn't be my first choice in this recipe - soya chunks, maybe...). It was a main dish and I expected a salad or accompaniment of some sort but there was none, so I'd probably have a starter next time. Desert was very good if fairly standard (brownie with ice cream) and coffee (americano) was ok (from a Nespresso machine rather than a real espresso machine). A lovely place away from the tourist trail yet very close to the Cathedral. Don't miss it. read more

Terrible food and service. On May 29,2019 we ordered a salad and vegan hamburger. We did complació that the hamburger was burned. and 15 minutes instead of burned hamburger we got not cooked mash. It was a recommendation from the Rick Steve's book, as we were staying at one of his recommend hostal, right around the corner, so the location was convenient. We were looking for change from the tapas bars and ham/bacon. Excellent pizza - the mushroom + caprese was really good - flavorful with a enough spice to keep you interest. The wife had a wonderful salad full of fresh ingredients and a sweet goat cheese. Honestly, it was so good, it was tough to even think of this restaurant as only a vegetarian place. read more

I was here in 2011 and had a wonderful meal. The menu was fabulous. My rather carnivorous mother found nothing lacking. In fact, she still talks about it as a highlight of our trip. We ordered a few dishes to share. Everything we got was great. The cheeses and produce was fresh and it was all prepared perfectly. One of the best vegetarian restaurants, maybe I shall skip the word "vegetarian", I've ever had! Thank Yelp for all the previous visitors' recommendations, my wife and I decided to give a trial to M.T. though we are not vegetarian, it turns out so delicious to both of us. We ordered three dishes, except onion soup was a bit salty, the salad ( second on menu) was just perfect and the country pizza was great! The Chef really knows how to make diners feel satisfactory and grateful! As a vegetarian traveling through Spain, it was wonderful to find a restaurant where I could eat more than just a salad, bread and cheese without a confused look of 'why don't you want ham with this'. And to make it even better, it was really yummy. I had the blue cheese and walnut croquettes to start, the mushroom risotto for main and ended with the chocolate cake with ice cream. After the endless eating places featuring hanging hams, boring salads, and potato chips for an appetizer, this restaurant listed by Rick Steves was wonderful. It wasn't that easy to find, but was so beautiful and welcoming when we walked in. Although spacious, we were the only people there for lunch for nearly an hour. The decoration, the music, and the relaxed pace of our excellent meal were a real treat from the busy streets around Plaza Zocodover . Everything we had was excellent and although it wasn't inexpensive, it also didn't cost that much more than some truly disappointing meals we have had in our 2 weeks in Spain. read more
