Gf burger, onion rings, perrito caliente, tinto de verano

Hands down one of the best places in Madrid to find vegan Spanish taberna food. First off, B13 is a punk vegan bar/restaurant that is first come, first serve and will usually have a line at their opening dinner time on the weekends. They serve good food at good prices in a chill, unapologetic environment. Now, on to the food. My favorite stuff at B13: -- Bocadillo de Chorizo (5e) // The chorizo is spicy and delicious, with a nice balance from the cream cheese. I almost always get this! -- Salchipapas (6,5e) // These are super flavorful and rich with crunchy onions, barbecue sauce and vegan mayo. Perfect for sharing! -- Hamburguesa La Morada sin gluten (6e) // My partner always gets this burger gluten free. The patty is soft but well made, and overall it's really tasty. Definitely great with some added sauce, too! Other options we rotate through whenever we go include the Durum Kebab, Onion Rings, Perrito Caliente, Calamares, Pincho de Tortilla and the Hamburguesa de Pollo. Everything is super delicious and insanely affordable, so you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The service has always been fast and friendly, really cool vibes and super clean. They turn tables super fast and I just love the energy here. The drinks are also bomb, they especially make a great tinto de verano. I highly suggest checking out B13 anytime you're in Madrid and looking for classic vegan taberna fare at real Spanish prices!

Ordering local cuisine abroad when you don't eat meat or seafood can be limiting, or at the very least intimidating when you're not 100% sure that what you just ordered at an omnivore restaurant is fully vegetarian and you feel like a touristy dweeb trying to double-check in American English. That being the case, I was pleased to find B13, a vegan tapas bar in a tight space on a narrow street off the center of town. The vibe was relaxed and hip without any uncomfortable pretension (at least I didn't sense any awkwardness and we even had a 5 year old with us). It wasn't fancy (which I like) and it had what we wanted (which was a couple of iconic tapas dishes made vegan). Basically, whatever you call it, it's still deep-fried bar food, but it is what it is and I appreciate that.

Not the prettiest picture (we hadn't eaten all day, started eating ‍! Durum Kebab, Chicken Burger, Patatas Bravas w/aioli.

This was the first meal in Madrid and OMG- it was so good. Like many restaurants in Spain, B13 closes for a couple of hours during the early afternoon. Dinner begins at 8:30; we got there at 8:40 and the place was already packed! Thankfully, a couple shared their table with us, so we were able to take a seat pretty quickly. I ordered the durum kebab, the bestie ordered a chicken burger and we shared an order of the patatas bravas with a side of aioli. The kebab was great, juicy and light. Great kick off the the Madrid portion of our adventure.

B13 is easy to find and really yummy. We had the daily meal and it was very good. Also got some strawberry milkshakes, which were delicious. Very crowded when we went, and had to wait in line. Found the ordering system a little confusing and wish there was more space, but overall a good experience. Huge portions. Good price.

Amazing restaurant. I definitely recommend getting there when they open because it fills up fast (and isn't a large restaurant)! The food is very well priced and the portions are a good size. I definitely recommend one of the burgers, and don't forget to get a portion of cake for dessert!

    Great menu!

They were totally full when we arrived, and seemed to not want to let us know that there would likely be tables available soon. We asked to do take-out, which they enthusiastically obliged; 3 minutes after we ordered, many tables freed up. Lol. We got a barbacoa pizza and a vegetable pizza (each €14). The pizza came out in about 10 minutes. Both were tasty, especially the vegetable pizza, which had wonderfully marinated vegetables (peppers, zucchini, mushrooms and onions). The barbacoa was nice too, having vegan bacon, corn, and BBQ sauce. Solid spot for vegan pizza and other casual foods but done creatively and with class. Recommended.

Their menu is a great mix of classic Spanish eats (tortilla de patata, bocadillos) and crowd pleasers, like pizza and burgers. My favorites: -- Bocata de Calamares (8,50€) // This is a Spanish classic, and it's essentially a sandwich featuring calamari rings with a cream cheese-like spread on a baguette. Before you knock it, try it. It's literally so good, and the one at Pura Vida is easily the best vegan version I've had. -- Lágrimas de Heura (6,95€) // So, these are basically chick'n nuggets made with the most popular vegan meat substitute in Spain, Heura. They're perfectly sized little morsels, kind of like popcorn chicken size, and fried to an ideal crisp. The agave-mustard dip on the side is also incredible and balances out the richness. -- Pincho de Tortilla de Patata (3,50€) // If you haven't tried tortilla de patata in Spain, I'm not sure where you've been eating. It's a must. Out of all the vegan ones I've tried in Madrid, Pura Vida's is my favorite. -- Alemana Pizza (12,95€) // My friend was craving a pizza, so we went for the Alemana which is pretty simple with tomato sauce, cheese and vegan sausage. The sauce has a surprising depth of flavor and the cheese is good, too. I wouldn't hesitate to share a pizza again if I were in the mood for one. So, now that we've established that the food at Pura Vida is great, let's move on! Overall, I really like the vibe at Pura Vida because it's laidback but slightly above a true taberna, so it's a good spot if you want a solid dinner or just a bite and drink on the terraza. The only reason I docked a star is because the service can definitely lack. The servers often get overwhelmed or simply don't come by for like, literally, 30 minutes at a time some days. Price-wise, some dishes are a little higher than others but for the most part, it's reasonable. Pura Vida will continue to be one of our go-to places in Madrid, especially when we're craving some Spanish classics and a solid pour of vermut.

We shared the Chickweed, marinated asparagus, breaded artichoke and Romesco sauce appetizer (€9) to start, a wonderfully curated dish with perfectly breaded and fried artichokes (not too oily), impeccably marinated asparagus and some leaves (chickweed), with a fantastic Romesco sauce. Fantastic starter. Then we shared two mains -- the Bolognese Lasagna (€13) and Shimenji Mushooms Long Sandwich (€12.5). The lasagna was extremely decadent, smothered in smoked bechamel sauce -- the inside had seitan, some veggies, a passata (tomato) sauce, and served with some parmesan-like crackers. This was almost a bit too over-the-top, but in small amounts (split between two of us), it worked well. The sandwich was simple but excellent -- wonderfully textured shimenjis carry this dish, along with the vegan garlic mayo, fresh arugula and tomato. The bread was fresh and fluffy too. Very friendly service. Great place to hang out and enjoy a long, leisurely meal. Highly recommended.

(My American stomach still craves dinner at 7-8ish.) There was only one other table in the place. The restaurant was rather quiet, even with the music playing.
