Madrid's full of vegan spots and this was one I had previously researched before arriving and couldn't resist stopping by for dinner. I came off a fairly long day of sightseeing and sought a more proper meal. This ended up being one of the closer options for me so I pounced. The place is very chill. Seems apt for college students or those visiting and staying in hostels. It's got that youthful energy for sure, but I did see a nice variety of people. Not knowing what's better than the other, I ordered the B13 burger. Man, the burger was on point. The patty was excellent and filling. You couldn't even tell the cheese was vegan. The fries were the perfect compliment. Not oily but tasty and thick. If anything, the only minor gripe was the patty and bun were so big that I had to eat with a fork and knife. That's an indictment of how great the place is. Service is pretty fast too - about less than 10 mins. Hands down one of the best places in Madrid to find vegan Spanish taberna food. First off, B13 is a punk vegan bar/restaurant that is first come, first serve and will usually have a line at their opening dinner time on the weekends. They serve good food at good prices in a chill, unapologetic environment. Now, on to the food. My favorite stuff at B13: -- Bocadillo de Chorizo (5e) // The chorizo is spicy and delicious, with a nice balance from the cream cheese. I almost always get this! -- Salchipapas (6,5e) // These are super flavorful and rich with crunchy onions, barbecue sauce and vegan mayo. Perfect for sharing! -- Hamburguesa La Morada sin gluten (6e) // My partner always gets this burger gluten free. The patty is soft but well made, and overall it's really tasty. Definitely great with some added sauce, too! Other options we rotate through whenever we go include the Durum Kebab, Onion Rings, Perrito Caliente, Calamares, Pincho de Tortilla and the Hamburguesa de Pollo. Everything is super delicious and insanely affordable, so you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The service has always been fast and friendly, really cool vibes and super clean. They turn tables super fast and I just love the energy here. The drinks are also bomb, they especially make a great tinto de verano. Eats here followed by cruising the neighborhood for street art and interesting shops makes for a great outing slightly off the main tourist beat. Ordering local cuisine abroad when you don't eat meat or seafood can be limiting, or at the very least intimidating when you're not 100% sure that what you just ordered at an omnivore restaurant is fully vegetarian and you feel like a touristy dweeb trying to double-check in American English. That being the case, I was pleased to find B13, a vegan tapas bar in a tight space on a narrow street off the center of town. The vibe was relaxed and hip without any uncomfortable pretension (at least I didn't sense any awkwardness and we even had a 5 year old with us). This casual dining place is tucked away in a hole in the wall in a not so busy street in Madrid. Ordering was different than most other places because you just had to go up to the bar and order your food directly, different from sitting and having someone take your order. I liked this casual concept. The food was incredible. I had the "chicken" with garlic and mushrooms and the "hot dog." The chicken was seasoned so well and not too chewy, like most imitation chicken I have had. The hot dog was delicious as well, and topped with relish and fried onions. This was the first meal in Madrid and OMG- it was so good. Like many restaurants in Spain, B13 closes for a couple of hours during the early afternoon. Dinner begins at 8:30; we got there at 8:40 and the place was already packed! Thankfully, a couple shared their table with us, so we were able to take a seat pretty quickly. B13 is easy to find and really yummy. We had the daily meal and it was very good. Also got some strawberry milkshakes, which were delicious. Very crowded when we went, and had to wait in line. Menu small but deliciously executed, simple food for simple patrons (yes they are). Staff very friendly and accommodating. Overall highly recommendable, I do tend to go back whenever I get a chance. I am a vegan and this place is a safe haven. The only hiccup is when you go at a typical (for Spaniards) meal time, say 9pm, the waiting is going to kill the buzz a bit, as there's one or two cooks who handle the place. Vegan junk food at it's best! Good cheap eats that will fill you on a minimum amount of Euros. 3 of us ate like kings for €17. The winner was the garlic potatoes. Ambience: typical for a vegan divey sort of bar. Really busy/popular, hard to get seats. Had a somewhat college-aged clientele feel to it when I was there. Service: Quick, bilingual, got my food very quickly. Food: really, really disappointing. I probably picked the wrong items, but the onion rings were worse than what I could make with grocery store brand. The B13 burger had decent sauce, but the burger tasted rubbery and really wasn't very appetizing at all. Amazing vegetarian food in central madrid, (not only vegetarian but vegan at that). Great tapas menu. I had a Bocadillo with vegan chorizo that was great. Staff is very friendly. Thought I would feel uncomfortable eating on my own but ate at the bar staff made me feel very welcome. The price can't be beat. It is a small place so be warned you may need to wait. Fantastic seitan cutlet -- they make their own and it's thick, tender and juicy with crispy breading and not greasy at all. Even took one "to go" back to the hotel and ate it the next day and still very good at room temperature. Desserts we tried were "cream" pies that were also delicious. This place is definitely popular. 3 stars as B13 wasn't on par with what I expected. More of a 'imitation meat' concept than vegan. Most items on menu are aimed to taste like beef, chicken or sausage.
