Every single item was a hit. Each bite somehow tasted even better than the last. The pastries were flaky and perfectly baked, the quiches were flavorful and satisfying, and the desserts were outstanding. If I had to pick a standout, the almond croissants were absolutely incredible. This bakery never disappoints and is a go-to for catering, holidays, or just treating yourself. Highly recommend

That being said, when I was…read moremaking plans to spend a couple of days in Cape May, I searched bakeries in the area to see if any stood out. There are several, but the one that really caught my attention was Chez Michel. Besides Italian, French bakeries are some of my favorites - and since the reviews looked great, I made plans to check it out. Chez Michel is located in West Cape May amongst a small strip of other businesses. Even though the bakery is only ~4 years old, Michel Gras has been in Cape May since 1984 and previously owned another French bakery in the area. I arrived mid-morning - it wasn't too crowded but it was also raining hard so that may have curbed the crowds. The bakery itself has a pretty typical layout - a large open area for customers and a line of display cases that house the goods. I also noticed a selection of coffee products and souvenirs for purchase off to the side. They have a good selection - I noticed tarts, cakes, cookies, and an expansive selection of quiche. I wanted to get a good sense of the bakes so I got a few things: broccoli and cheese quiche, bacon and cream cheese tart, linzer tart, cherry and cheese danish, elephant ears, and walnut sticky bun (don't worry, I shared). Everything was delicious - I could tell they were high quality, it really showed in all of the bakes. My favorite was definitely the walnut sticky bun - that walnut topping almost tasted like candy and the bun itself was soft and flavorful. Other standouts for me were the quiche, linzer tart, and elephant ears - some of the best I've had. Service was good - I was taken care of promptly and all of my bakes were packed meticulously. Overall, Chez Michel is a yes - it may not be on the main drag, but the bakes are high quality so it's well worth a visit. I would definitely return the next time I find myself in Cape May.

In fact you may not get anything because when they sell out they close. It happened to me a few summers ago until I learned my lesson that some people lined up at 6:30- 7 o'clock in the morning. I take my chances at 8 o'clock but if I'm in the mood for a traditional white cream filled donut I get in line before 7 AM. They are creme doughnuts like the ones you had growing up in the 60s and 70s. Filled. Their corn fritters are to die for. Their sticky buns are very good. They are so good that I told the owner a couple of summers ago that she can't close until I die. LOL.

I recently dined at the Ebbitt Room, and I have never had such a conflicting experience. While the…read morekitchen and bar are clearly talented, the service and management decisions completely ruined the evening. The Positives: I have to give credit where it is due as the food and drinks were genuinely great. We ordered the calamari, celery root soup, scallops, and the chicken breast. Everything came out delicious and perfectly prepared. The drinks were also a highlight specifically the pomegranate margarita and the winter sangria. The bartender clearly knows what they are doing. The Service: Absent and Unprofessional. Unfortunately, the night took a sharp turn regarding the service. Our waitress was virtually non existent. She spent the entire night chatting with another couple, barely sparing a moment for our table outside of taking the initial order. It got to the point where the bartender had to do the waitresses job. Our drinks were sitting on the bar for quite a while until the bartender finally walked them over to us, saying, "I just wanted to drop these off so they wouldn't sit out." Later, we watched the bartender go into the back and run food to the other couple, the very table our waitress was busy socializing with, telling them he, "just wanted to bring this out so it would still be hot." The bartender was acting more like a waiter than our actual server was. Sketchy Billing & Atmosphere: Things got even stranger when the check arrived. We noticed a $24 charge for a "cheeseburger"--an item that isn't even on the menu. We flagged down the waitress, and before we could even explain the issue, she immediately said, "Oh yes, you are right, there is an error, sorry about that." It was an incredibly odd reaction; she knew there was an error before we even vocalized what was wrong. To top it off, the dining room was absolutely freezing. When we asked why, the waitress claimed the heat was broken. However, upon visiting the restroom, the heat was pumping just fine. It felt deliberate--like a corner cutting measure to save money during the off-season rather than a genuine mechanical failure. Overall: Despite the food being delicious, the terrible service, the suspicious billing "error," and the uncomfortable temperature make this a place I cannot recommend. For the price point, you expect a certain level of professionalism and comfort, and Ebbitt Room failed on both counts. I will not be returning.
