Our garage door was stuck half way open. We first called the company that advertises on the billboards around town. They sent a fellow out who he said he couldn't repair our system "because we didn't install it." What??? We then called the local Madison Overhead Garage Door Services the next day. Yesterday, the spring for my garage door broke with a loud bang. I called Madison Overhead. They answered right away. Very pleasant woman on the line. She told me that she would have someone out the following day between 12 and 2. Yay! Dan arrived today at 12:00. Very courteous and professional. He has been with the company for 18 years. That says alot. He replaced the spring and bushings (they were cracked) and lubricated all the moving parts. The door now works like new. On top of that, the cost of this service call was... I ordered a genie garage door opener from Home depot with with installation. They contracted with Madison Overhead Garage door to do the installation. the first tech installed the opener in correctly. I called genie and they told me the belt was installed backwards, I call Madison Overheard door and Mike, the owner, tells me I should not matter how the belt is installed. however they sent another tech who again said the belt position does not matter but he got the opener to work except for the safTy beam which an important feature. I called genie back and they said it was the belt on backwards. I called Overhead Door back and insisted they reverse the belt. They agreed to send the tech out but if the belt position was not the issue he would charge me 65 dollars. the tech came out for the third time and switched the belt around. now everything works perfect. it should not take three visits for something that should have been done right the first time. read more

Alright, quite a lengthy review here, so if you don't want to read the whole thing, here are the broad strokes: -scheduled an appointment to have garage door replaced that they just didn't show up for. No apologies, not acknowledgment of their mistake. -rescheduled appointment and technician showed up on time, but without all the parts needed for complete install. -tech installed new door PLUS items that I had specifically asked not to have installed, then tried to charge me for them. After much arguing, situation was remedied. Review in Long Form: I contacted Madison Overhead Garage Door Services the week before Thanksgiving to have an estimate for a garage door repair. We had an old door that had a reputation of falling off the tracks and it had been repaired by the past by Madison Overhead Door Service. After the tech came to give an estimate- it made more sense for the door to be replaced than repaired, so we went ahead and scheduled an appointment for the first available time slot which was about a week and a half later (Thursday 11/7, from Noon to 2pm). The day of the appointment rolled around and I took off of work to be at home during the install. Noon rolled around and no tech. 1:00 pm rolled around, no tech. 2:00 pm, no tech. At 2:05 I called the offie and spoke with Mike - the person that I emailed and called to schedule the appointment - and asked if the installer was running late. He said to me "No, if he was running late we would have definitely called. You don't have an appointment for today". I reminded him of our conversation when I scheduled the appointment, and also of the email chain we had regarding the appointment, and he still stood by his statement that we did not have an appointment. No apology from him at all. No offer to make it right. He just said his next available was a week a later. In frustration I told him that we would be looking elsewhere for a new garage door. A few minutes later Mike called back and said they had a cancellation for the next day, and if I wanted I could have the door installed then. I suppose I should have followed my instincts and said no thanks, but I agreed and we scheduled the appointment for 11/8. On the day of the appointment the tech showed up around 1pm - a friendly guy who seemed to know what he was doing. He let me know that they were out of the proper trim pieces for the door, so he'd have to come back to install that, but he could get the whole door up today. I agreed (again, probably should have seen this as a sign to say no). He took the old door down, installed the new door over the course of the next few hours, and came in to let me know that it was all done. I went out to inspect the work and noticed that there was a new operator installed as well - I told him that we had specifically said no to the new operator, which was news to him. The old operator was dangling off the back of his truck with the rest of the old garage door that had hastily been ripped down. He called Mike in the office, who confirmed that we did not ask for the new operator, and once confirmed told me that he'll have to take the new one down and reinstall the new one. I agreed. Before starting the work I went back into the house and he called Mike, then came back to the door and said he could offer the new operator for $250 - to me this meant that he either did not want to reinstall the old operator (which, I can't blame him for) or (in the most cynical of cases) this was a sales tactic to get me to buy the new operator. "Well, it's already up, we'll give you a good deal on this one". I told him that I did not want the new operator - it was unnecessary and I didn't want to spend any more money. I also asked him if he can guarantee that the old one would work the same way once he reinstalled it and he said no, he couldn't - he didn't test its functionality before he took it down. I told him that I knew that it worked before it was taken down, and that I would like some assurance that it would function as well as it did before. He said he couldn't do that, and if it doesn't work when he puts it back up it's not his fault. Things got more heated than I wanted - he was clearly frustrated because of the extra work. I called the office, and of course Mike was out for the day. I spoke with a nice woman who listened calmly and was pretty helpful. She said she'd try and find Mike, and in the meantime she assured me that if I didn't want the new operator, they'd put up the old one. If the old one didn't work, they'd reinstall the new one (again). She must have found Mike really fast, because within minutes he called the technician, and then immediately called me to let me know that the tech would just leave the new operator in at no additional charge. In the end, having to fight to not pay for something I specifically did not ask for earns you a one star review. Ugh, I'm exhausted just writing this. read more

We had to replace our garage door because somebody backed into it. The Madison Overhead Garage Door Service is GREAT. They quickly came out and gave me a free estimate and a couple weeks later installed a beautiful large garage door complete with trim (mine was rotten) in a half a day. They are NICE and efficient, price wise competitive with the big box stores (those I couldn't get to come out to measure even after several calls). We had them replace our opener motor a couple of years ago when the garage door stuck. And they came within a couple of hours to break me out of my garage :) You can't go wrong with them. read more

Have been having problems for a couple of weeks with our automatic garage door opener. First sign of trouble was two weeks ago when the door would only open so far as the first joint, then would stop, the lights would flash, and we would have to close and attempt to open it again. Eventually I pushed the door up and down manually a couple of times and the automatic opener started working again. This morning, my wife called me at work to say that she couldn't get the garage door open. (I hadn't parked in the garage last night, so I didn't know there was a problem.) I ended up coming home, diagnosing that the durn thing was busted, and looking online for a garage door repair place nearby. I tried calling both Sears and Madison Overhead. M.O. was open, Sears didn't open until 9. Point M.O. I called and made an appointment with M.O. and they were really excited that I had heard of them through a G--gle search, "Yay, it works!" I called Sears again after 10 am to see if they had a warranty for this opener (it's a Craftsman, was born in 1993, so it was originally sold by Sears)- they had a 1-year guarantee against defects, so I was about 18 years too late. (Wow, my garage door opener is old enough to buy cigarettes, where did the years go!) They offered to come out and take a look...tomorrow. M.O. 2, Sears 0. Sears said they have a minimum service call fee of $74.99 (M.O. has an $80 flat fee for everything including labor and service call, I would just have to pay for the parts). The Sears employee I talked to was really helpful and suggested that I take the housing cover off and see if the plastic gear inside of the housing was stripped (I did, it was), and if so, I could order the part for installation myself. Before shipping and tax, the part was $70 from Sears. I found the same part online for $12-$25. After much hemming and hawing and questioning my own manhood, "I could do this, but my hands would get all greasy, plus it's about 20 degrees outside now..." I decided that I was an enlightened male, and I didn't have to fix it myself. The Madison Overhead tech, Dan, called at 2:04 pm (they scheduled the appointment for between 2 and 4 pm today) to say he was on his way. He was here, showed me what was wrong, and also found two other issues that I wouldn't have even known to look for. He replaced both the stripped gear (the $25 part) and the sprocket (together, about $38 online), and adjusted the tension in the torsion spring that counterbalances the garage door. He was friendly, fast, and good at his job. The door works great now- he lubricated all the joints too, so it's a lot quieter- and it took him about an hour and twenty minutes from start to finish. Best of all, our cars can sleep snugly in the garage tonight! Had I done this repair myself, I wouldn't have known how to adjust the spring tension or even that it wasn't adjusted right in the first place. The fact that the door was way too heavy was probably a contributing factor to the gear stripping in the first place (that, the fact that it's 18 year-old-plastic, lives in a garage ranging from 100 degrees in the summer to -20 in the winter...and its smoking habit). I could have ended up taking the whole assembly apart, replacing just the old gear, put everything back together, just to have the new gear strip in a week or month or year from now because I didn't diagnose the tension problem. For other manly men (and/or women) trying to decide whether to go it alone or to hire somebody, yes it will cost more to hire somebody, but they will do it right, the first time, and you will get security with your repair. I highly recommend Madison Overhead for all your garage door repairs and replacement. I give them full marks for service, punctuality, knowledge, and quality. I dinged them just a bit for the cost of the repair (they are definitely competitive compared to Sears, but you could do it a lot cheaper yourself). read more

I cannot believe the wonderful service I received. Our garage door cable broke with both cars inside the garage. I could not lift the door manually and it appeared one of the rollers and brackets had broken. I called Madison Overhead Garage Door and Julie was professional and empathetic. We had a family situation for which I needed the car. The tech, Justin, arrived within 2 hours and had the door fixed within 30 minutes. This review is based on getting an estimate. I'll update my review if I end up choosing Madison Overhead (MO) to do the work as well. I called a number of places to get an estimate to fix or replace one of my garage door openers and replace both garage doors. MO answered immediately, made an appointment that fit my schedule, and was all-around professional on the phone. My appointment was scheduled for 3:30-4:30 (they would show up at some point within that hour) and, at 3:40, I received a call that the estimator was in the alley at my garage. He asked if I would prefer that he meet me at the front of the house, which I thought was nice considering he was where he needed to be to do his work. I met him in the back and complimented him on knowing to go to the alley. For the next 20 minutes, he inspected, answered my questions, and offered a lot of valuable information. I didn't know the difference and he could have easily sold me a new opener but, instead, explained how they worked, how they can be repaired, and how much "life" was left in the one I already had. Once he was done, he asked for 5-7 minutes to write up the estimate. He met me on my front porch and we reviewed the estimate together, where he showed me the options I had, set expectations on timing, and provided some additional suggestions based on my circumstances. Overall, the experience was highly professional and I was left with a sense that I would be in great hands if they did the work. I'll be sure to revise this review if MO is hired. read more

We had an issue where the support that was holding up one of the tracks split and the opener while trying to pull the door open bent the track. We also have an issue with water pooling near one corner and causing the door to freeze to the ground on colder days. Mike came over and took a look at everything. Found a new support to attach the bent track (which he was able to straighten). He then replaced a few rusted elements near the area with the pooling water. Got everything back in working order in under an hour. I'm grateful that he was able to reuse so much of the existing setup instead of immediately replacing everything. He was friendly and did quality work. Also, adjusted the opener to keep the frozen area from directly touching the ground. I would definitely recommend and use them for any overhead door needs. read more

These people are excellent. I thought I had really broken a spring and had the car was stuck in the garage. To top it off I hurt my back trying to fix the dumb thing myself! I called them and they did not have an opening. But, when I desribed my dumbness in hurting my back, they rearranged the schedule and got me in! Now is that customer service or what! They came out and did not have to replace the spring and replaced cables, thereby saving me cash! The price was completely fair (and cheaper than Chiropracter), the service was efficient and the people were awesome. I will gladly recommend them to anyone. read more
