What a cute little store. We were picking up some takeout in the area and stopped there and I was able to find the wine that I was looking for as well as wine that my sister likes. It was so nice to find both of them in the same place without having to really look because as soon as I entered the store someone came up and offered to help me. I told her what I was looking for and they brought it to me immediately. I managed to accomplish that errand in about five minutes which is something that I'm always grateful for. And I like the way that they brought you in safely help you shop let you check out safely and really moved the process along so that you weren't even socially distancing for any length of time. I really appreciate it when people make me feel safe. I don't know what else they have there as far as a selection of alcohol because I really don't know much about it except for beer and wine. But actually they did have the beer that we were looking for as well and it was just an all-around friendly quick safe experience. read more

Stopped in here to buy a bottle of wine to bring to a party and found the two women at the counter (mother and daughter, I think) incredibly friendly and helpful. We chatted about all sorts of things and when the older woman came outside to talk to the mailman she came to the car and chatted with my son, too. This is a small, family run business in a quiet neighborhood and if I lived here they'd be my main go to liquor shop. read more

World's worst customer service. Dirty bottles and expired liquor. Can't host any event with dirt on your bottles. Bad treatment not the mom and pops spot you thought it was. Specially when you're spending a lot of money and have no accommodations.... bad customer service and are spoken to very rudely I will never go here ever again. If there was a selection for more stars I would choose that but I chose once because that was the LOWEST STANDARD I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. read more

Like many other yelpers have said the woman who works there is so rude. Goes out of her way to be rude. Their selection is also very limited and it's not clean or sanitary insane. There are boxes of empty cans on the floor. Speak w your dollars and go to bottles - they have an awesome rewards program too. read more

This is a great little liquor store jam packed with just about anything you'll need. Owned by a sweet Portuguese family, you know you can get any Portuguese wine you need here. The service is great! There's a great selection of craft beers and spirits as well. Easy to stop in with street parking (hard to find on the East Side sometimes). Great hours too -- even in a snow storm, they are open. Great selection of wine and craft beers, friendly staff, and very conveniently located to several BYOB restaurants. These are the main reason why I frequent Madeira. I can always find the perfect beer to compliment the style of food I am about to nosh on in the fabulous Fox Point and Wickenden neighborhoods. They are family run and very friendly and helpful. They may be small but they have a very awesome craft beer selection including some of my favorite brands such as Dogfish head, Berkshire Brewing, and Long Trail. For those who aren't fans of a good brew, but prefer wine instead will be happy to know that they frequently have tastings. So, if you are in the area and need to pick up an adult beverage, I highly recommend you stop in to Madeira's. read more

This is my favorite liquor store on College Hill. If Campus Fine WInes is too stuffy for you, and Darwin's too eccentric, then this is your place. There are a few women who run it, and they are nothing but nice and helpful. All you need to do is ask, and they'll be more than helpful to point you in the direction of what your looking for. Their prices are quite fair, and they have a fantastic wine selection. What really gets me about Madeira's is the selection of those big bottles of wine. Often, liquor stores only offer a pitiful variety of these gems, but Madeira's has a TON. for a college student looking to get drunk economically, this is a must. read more

The staff, selection, and prices make Madeira a pleasure to shop at. I go for the wine - a nice range of prices, including a lot of bottles in the $8-12 range (and the even cheaper vinho verde, my current favorite). The shop is family-owned and the staff is very friendly. They frequently have tastings - I've discovered some great new wines through them. Beware of going too close to closing on the weekends,as the store is small and cramped, and it can get a bit claustrophobic as everyone comes in for last minute purchases. read more

When in grad school, i lived at 308 Williams, one door away. I could make a "packy" run in 3 mins flat. Amazing. Random wine discounts, very reasonable prices on all beers and spirits. If you've ever been in this place you'll understand why I'm so shocked at the amount of variety they manage to cram into such a small space. It's honestly amazing. I used to make the trek out to the bigger liquor store in Seekonk, but after a while, it seemed like their inventory just never changed. Now that I'm living closer to Madeira, I'm kicking myself for no going there more. Every single time I go there, they have a beer I've never seen before. Plus, they always have the old standbys like Narraganssett. They have samples every (or most) Friday afternoons, and the staff/owners are always friendly and nice. Plus, I just sort of get a kick out of the notion of a family-run liquor store--not sure why. I was in there recently, and it seemed like they have six family members behind the counter, just hanging out watch Portuguese tv. It's like going to a friend's house to buy beer. In addition to the great selection of beer, they also always have what you're looking for in terms of liquor. I haven't bought much wine there, so I can't speak to that, but every other base is pretty well covered. The prices are also really fair, and the narrow aisles make this place seem a bit like a treasure trove. It's just a great store with everything you want or need. read more

Vinho verde - "green wine" to the Portuguese - but essentially sauvignon blanc for the Providence 99%. As would befit a family-owned liquor store in the heart of Portuguese Providence, Maderia stocks vinho verde, in addition to a reasonable selection of liquor and craft beers. At 6-8 dollars a bottle, this wine begs to be served frosty, but has won numerous converts, even among out-of-towners. Of note, the wine isn't green, the bottles are. Atmosphere is reasonable - with bottle displays everywhere compensating for a smallish layout. The TV above the register always plays Rachel Maddow or some other squawk box of the left wing. The proprietors will not turn it off or apologize for it. Pinkos. Otherwise, prices are moderate, with a six-pack of craft beers going for 9-10 bucks, reasonable for the East Side. Standard may have kegs (Madeira doesn't) and a wider selection, but at Gano Street is the place to go for vinho verde. read more

Madeira is one of the staple liquor stores for Brown students because of its convenient location on Ives Street, a short walk from South campus. I've been here a number of times to try a new beer or get a cheap bottle of wine, but never thought to review it since I have never had a particularly special experience here. Usually, there is one woman working the counter who just sits there with earphones on watching Netflix. Not very helpful whatsoever. However, this past visit (on a Saturday afternoon), the owner of the store (a kind, older lady) and another woman were working the counter. I've seen the owner putting bottles up on shelves before, but I've never had the chance to speak to her. I wish that those two ladies were the one's working all of the time! They are incredibly helpful when it comes to various types of liquor (they suggested a certain brand of soju for me), and are happy to answer any questions you might have about pricing. I will definitely continue to frequent Madeira for the rest of my time at Brown. read more

The experience of booze-buying at Medeira just doesn't fit the usual criteria. It's just its own cool, quirky thing. *I love the family factor - there are often two family members behind the counter, attentive but also hanging out, usually multi-tasking other random things, always in a pleasant mood, sense of humor. *They tape little reviews and ratings from magazines all over the wines, everywhere - it makes me smile. *There -are- a bunch of Portuguese wines to explore. And for a little place, a lot of interesting beers. Best of all, they carry one of my current fave red wines called "The Show" (both a malbec and a cab blend) - I can't find it ANYWHERE else. *The vibe in here on a Friday night is fun, everyone excited for the weekend and stocking up on libations. Maybe you feel that energy because it *is* a small, cool place in a student neighborhood. My all time favorite liquor store! The women who run the place are wonderful! Every time I go in we chat. They are dog friendly too so they always have a cookie for my dog Wiley. Once you get to know the family they'll always have something you want. For example. I have a specific type of wine I like, some how that wine always finds it's way into the fridge. They stock up on it for me. Great store, great prices, great family. Over all a fun place to visit. It's a small store but you'll find a wide variety of products. Definitely my liquor store of choice. They have a selection of wine and beer that makes them one of the best on the east side. They don't have the pretension or prices of say Campus Wines but easily match it with selection. The Portuguese family that owns it has a wonderful selection of Portuguese wines ranging from low to high range. They are always friendly and you can find most everything. My only concern is that they think I am an alki because I keep showing up there grabbing booze for parties, dinners, etc. read more

I live in Wayland Sq and like to make the 5 minute walking trip to this place over Wayland Sq liquors because of the beer selection. The selection is nothing special but for the East Side it can't be beat. They have good prices and are family owned. While your down here BYOB to United BBQ on Ives as well and get some good eats. read more

Hands down best shop for Portuguese wines in terms of quality and price. Yes the shop is small, but there is a ton of variety ranging from organic vodka to Japanese beer. Not only is it really convenient to have a neighborhood liquor store one block away, but on top of that to have a great craft beer selection with some rare bombers of beer in the mix and a pretty extensive wine and liquor collection in a tiny well sorted apartment sized space, it couldn't get any better. But, it can because Madeira's is also owned by a local family that is both knowledgable of product AND total sweethearts.
