Fun games for beginners to get comfortable with improv!
    Katrina N.

Took the Improv sampler class and... It was amazing. I was blown away by the instructor's clear direction, but also patience with all of our concerns and fears. You can tell he has done this for a while. My friends and I took this improv class to try something brand new and walked with joy, confidence and a newer perspective. ANYONE can do improv. I've never felt so free and not in my head in a while. Plus.. 2 hour class for the rate was absolutely the best deal. Highly recommend to anyone (you don't need friends to do it with since you'll make them there!)

Made up theatre is definitely a gem of a creative play space in Fremont! I took an introductory session with Sean Taylor. I was incredibly nervous going my first time but it was so welcoming and Sean does a great job of creating a safe space for everyone to have fun and learn improv! After the sampler, I've gone on to take 3 full classes with Sean Reimer and William Yap, who both are fantastic instructors as well. I've taken the Intro to Improv class, Scene Study, and Improv Games. I would say that improv has definitely helped me become more confident as a speaker, it's helped improve my social skills, begin developing the muscle to think quickly of what to say or do, and I incorporate a lot more humor into my day to day life. It has been by far one of the more impactful hobbies I've come to pick up. I even took my partner to the sampler session and as a CEO he also agreed that improv was transformative and if his employees were located centrally he would have definitely had them do a company event here. I also enjoy the shows they have as well! They're super entertaining and as a student you can also get some tickets for free (your student show is also free to attend) - but I also recommend checking out their shows on the weekends. They're a good time and come out and support local performing arts!

TL;DR: - reasonably priced and intimately designed comedy experience that I would consider adding to my line-up of date night ideas. They have budget-friendly snacks, drinks, and ice cream at the front desk (check in on yelp for free popcorn). If you're worried about being put on the spot, they seem to go out of their way to ensure the entire audience has a chance to voluntarily participate. For their NYE special, they offered complimentary NYE decor and champagne/cider. parking: - easy parking as it shares the lot with the local grocery store. wait time: - we arrived about 20 mins before the start time of the show as the seats are first-come first-serve. By the time the show was about to start, all of the seats, except the first row, were filled up. ambiance: - a small but spacious theater space that works wonders with the stories that get created her every night. service: - very thoughtful and mindful cast who will only give you as much attention as you volunteer. They also go out of their way to ensure the entire audience has the opportunity to participate if by chance one side of the group is a little slower on their feet. food: [Worth It] - budget-friendly snacks that are NOT overpriced like the traditional theater's concession stands. don't forget to check in on yelp for free popcorn. restroom: - restrooms available inside. condition unknown.

The cast changes with each show, promising new tricks and hilarious scenarios

Went to a show twice in one week so clearly I enjoy this place! First time watching improv in awhile and Made Up Theatre did not disappoint. Hosted in one of the oldest buildings in Fremont, this small but lively theater hosts shows every week with a dynamic and talented cast. If you haven't seen improv before, highly recommend checking this place out! Ticket and food prices are very reasonable, and there is a large parking lot behind the theater that makes getting there easy. Cast alternates between playing various improv games with live input from the audience, which ensures that every show is unique and hilarious. They also offer improv classes (including teen camp) and opportunities to host company events - so you can make your coworkers funnier too!

I visited the Made Up Theatre for the first time this past Saturday for Laugh Track City, and had the best time ever! That is not an exaggeration. I walked in, not really knowing what to expect because I had scored some complimentary tickets... and I ended up laughing so hard the entire time, more than I do at stand-up comedy shows, even for popular comedians.  The performers were so good with their acting/improv, and they communicated with the crowd so well... they were friendly, creative, hilarious, explained things clearly to the audience, especially for newbies like myself, and they were so intelligent and talented being able to take the most awkward suggestions from the crowd and utilize them in their performance (related to history, literature, pop culture, random words/actions, etc.). I was sooo impressed! And absolutely entertained! The only way you could "NOT" like this is if you have a stick up your @ss, and I feel sorry for any of those people. If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out!! I got free tix initially, but this is absolutely worth paying full price, and I can see myself becoming a regular here because the show is different every time (since they have different performers and interact with a new audience each night in order to make the show). If you don't understand how improv works, don't worry, you'll still be entertained (let's just say it's like a skit, a game show, and a comedy show mixed into one... but multiple acts within the time frame for the event)... you'll understand when you get there. It's interactive with the audience, but you don't have to participate if you're shy. And you won't regret giving it a chance for a cool hour and a half on a Saturday night. The place may be a bit confusing to find, because what looks like an entrance on ground level on Bay Street is not the entrance, instead you climb up some outdoor stairs on Fremont Blvd (between Bay and Irvington) and the entrance is on the 2nd level. Parking's somewhat unclear too, it looks like there's a small parking lot off a one-way street (Bay), but no signs indicating if this lot is private. Most guests parked in the shopping plaza behind the theatre. Proof of vaccination is checked at the door (will call), and mask-wearing is required inside the theatre. The venue has great character and really cute lighting starting from the staircase to the entrance, as well as inside. You can pick your own seats and they all have good views, it's a nice intimate setting but not too small, ideal for this type of show. They also have movie trivia showing on a screen before the show and during intermission. They don't serve alcoholic beverages here, but they do have bottled drinks and snacks, as well as ice cream. There is a promotion if you check in on Yelp, free popcorn with drink/snack purchase.  They do classes and camps at Made Up Theatre too, but this review is mainly for Laugh Track City (Saturday night event). Come with people you love, or even by yourself, and it will definitely make your day! And it's not just the endless laughs, I definitely learned some new stuff too from all of the performances. Can't wait to return :)

Are there assigned seats or it first come first served?

It's first come first serve and I got there about 15ish minutes before the show. Enjoy!

Can tickets be brought at the theater or anyway to get around the service fee?

It is recommended to buy in advance at madeuptheatre.com, but if tickets are available, you can buy them at the door.

Has anyone been to both shows whose line is it anyway and the movie night? If so, what are the pros and cons to both?

You immediately get immersed into the game before even walking into the actual room and once you're in Occam's Apartment, it feels even more real. The room itself is well decorated, with nice details scattered around the apartment. I loved every minute of the escape room experience and felt challenged throughout the time we were there. We did ask for hints throughout our time there and the answers were often given through directional questions. What I liked most about the Off the Couch set up is that the escape rooms are all a continuation of a storyline, so it makes you feel invested in the experience. They have all kinds of screenings of great films. I just caught It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and intend to come back for Wild Strawberries (1957) and maybe The General (1926) next week. The theater seats are somewhat uncomfortable and the patrons are mostly really old white Boomers, but the latter is understandable given the subject matter and the usual demographic of people interested in this sort of thing. (Plus the general exodus of younger whites from California over the past 10 years and especially since COVID. It's a bit of a bummer for me because it's now much tougher for me to get a white girlfriend. Not that non-white girls aren't wonderful, but you know, I could just go abroad for a better and frankly higher-quality selection. I'm in America for my white girl.) The husband-wife team who run this place (Tony and Rhonda) are great, and everyone's extremely nice. I wish the gift shop had a better selection of old books though. Most of the Blu-rays on sale are superfluous with a Criterion Channel subscription, and the books on sale are pretty boring and seem to be ad hoc sales from people's used book collections. I haven't actually been to the museum proper yet (they're only open weekends 12-4 and I tend to only really wake up on weekend evenings/nights), but I love any theater that airs old films. Those are few and far between these days. The only other ones I know of in the Bay Area are in San Francisco. Once again, I'm totally shocked something like this is in Fremont.

For the 2024 event, most people brought their own chairs, others just stood behind those seated. I arrived an hour early, and set up my chair to ensure a good view, situating myself near Niles Town Plaza, midpoint of the parade route. Then I walked around to explore the antique shops on Niles that were still open after 5pm, as well as a couple merchandise vendor tents outside. Entertainment before the parade included live music by Anthony Arya Band, street performers like jugglers, as well as costumed characters including the Grinch and SpongeBob SquarePants walking down Niles Blvd and posing for photos with kids. I also saw 4 food trucks on site, serving sushi, sliders, chicken sandwiches, and mexican food. And there was a drink stand selling hot chocolate, coffee, and tea for a dollar donation. The tree lighting was not your traditional christmas tree, it was just a regular tree along the street (the one with the stage set up next to it, across from Nature's ice cream shop). But they did make it look pointy at the top, with the lights, lol. Decorated vehicles and performers in the parade represented numerous organizations in the community, including little league teams, East Bay Regional Parks, and Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum. Golden Gate Basset Rescue had several dogs being walked with colorful string lights on the leashes. It was adorable. American High School color guard did a wonderful job with their performance, and marching bands from various schools and institutions created impressive sounds on percussion and wind instruments galore, including the bag pipes. There were plenty of cars in the parade too, adorned with beautiful designs, lighting, and props to put you in the holiday spirit. The crowds grew as it got later into the evening. But it never became chaotic or unmanageable. The event seemed to be organized well, yet still casual and flexible (like people could cross the street during the parade), even with a heavy police presence. It was such a laid back and joyful atmosphere, free to attend, and parking and traffic isn't too difficult if you arrive early and leave early before the parade ends. Otherwise, good luck.
