Mango, papaya and carrot salad in Madame Hanoi's amazing crockery.
Ottilie F.

I've been here three times now, and I've walked away both times thinking the same thing: Great food, average service. Firstly, don't let the fact that Madame Hanoi is *technically* a part of the casino deter you from eating here. I'm yet to see any seedy people in here! The vibe of Madame Hanoi is really nice, laid-back and relaxed, but you still feel a bit special being there. Great date night spot! Madame Hanoi is split into three parts - downstairs, mezzanine bar and upstairs. The upstairs area seems to be better for larger groups, whereas the setting downstairs is a little more intimate. The mezzanine bar has long tables as the only seating, and is quite dark. Natural light fills both the downstairs and upstairs restaurant areas, but the bar lighting is very limited. Despite this, the interior is absolutely beautiful. There's a wide array of colours which look fantastic against the heritage building setting. The real star though, is the a huge mural of a Vietnamese woman scaling both stories of the restaurant. She is absolutely beautiful! Now, the food. Madame Hanoi is described as being a mix of French and Vietnamese. Well, it is and it isn't. The savoury food is predominantly Vietnamese, and the desserts are mostly French. The 'fusion' aspect is, to me, non-existent. Despite this, the food is creative, colourful and presented beautifully. Most dishes come on half-half plates, one half having Asian patters, and the other half being French-inspired. They literally look like someone has glued two different plates together, and they look great! Both times I have eaten here, I have chosen the 'let us feed you' menu, for $55 pp, including dessert, excluding alcohol. It's pricey, but it's worth it. I also appreciate that the menu shows exactly what you will be getting in the set menu. As a bit of a fussy eater and someone who is not a huge fan of spice, Asian food can be a bit of a minefield, and I don't usually feel 100% comfortable handing the reigns over to someone else. I really like knowing what's coming! Our set menu included 'son-in law' duck eggs, mango, papaya and carrot salad, pork belly baos, peppered soy beef, spicy chicken wings, Asian greens with garlic and rice. Upon ordering, we were asked if we were in a rush. The first time, we were, and staff did their best to ensure that we were in and out within an hour. However, last Wednesday, we weren't. The waitress explained that the dishes would be brought out in three courses. She then suggested a cocktail, and we each got a Hanoi Hannah, which I would definitely recommend. First, the wings and duck eggs. The wings were a little on the spicy side (I'm really weak when it comes to chilli!), but they were so sticky and flavoursome I just had to keep going! The duck eggs...well we were trying to work out how they'd managed to both poach and deep-fry it. The duck eggs were a real stand out, I just wish the yolk had still been runny. Next out was the mango, papaya and carrot salad and the pork belly baos. Order whatever you want, but GET THE BAOS. Don't think about it, just do it. They're messy, they're rich and they're probably pretty awful for you, but your taste buds will be forever in your debt! The salad was nice too, but was dwarfed by the almighty and everlasting power pork belly has on me. Last was the beef, garlic Asian green and rice. The greens were crisp and crunchy, but only eat the confit garlic clove if you REALLY like garlic or have no plans to kiss your date at the end of the night. That stuff is potent. The beef, ugh, that beef. It was glorious and we were fighting over who got the extra bit. I lost, and I'm still slightly bitter. I was close to keeling over from everything I'd already eaten, and then got reminded that dessert was yet to come. We were each served a glazed dome, one red and one dark brown. We both looked confused, and the waitress explained that these two half-spheres were Madame Hanoi's Bleeding Heart and Chocolate Royal. One was a white chocolate mousse with raspberry coulis, and the other was a chocolate mousse with hazelnut. Both had a chewy macaroon base which added to the decadence. We struggled, but managed to each have half of both desserts, and then called it quits. We could not have fitted any more in! While the food was worth 4 stars at least, the service is a real let down. I almost wish we had said that we had a prior engagement after dinner, because dinner went for nearly three hours! Staff were hard to get a hold of for drink orders/water refills, and eventually to get the bill I had to go to the counter and ask. If it had been particularly busy, I'd have been a little more sympathetic, however staff were frequently chatting in huddled groups. It's a real shame, because the food, décor and atmosphere at Madame Hanoi is such a stand out, yet the service really lets it down. Regardless, I'd still recommend trying the place out, maybe just make sure you have enough time on your hands!

Great location in the city, this place has tons of charm. Very accommodating too, we rocked in without a booking and they were more than happy to have us. We did the just feed me option and it is such a great value. Love all the dishes too and it does include a nice Asian dessert to end the meals. I don't eat beef and the chef it's kind enough to adjust the menu for me. Good choice for drinks too. Recommended and yes, I'm coming back again for sure

It was a trail blazer and considered ooo-la-la in good ol' Adelaide for 25 years. Happy times were here again when Bistro France was born in Burnside Village - with daughter Cazz as manager and son Philippe spending time in the kitchen. Sadly Jacques has since passed away, so it's extra special to have Christine continuing to make us feel not only welcome, but part of their hospitality history. Décor wise, memories of La Guillotine and feelings of belle-époque abound. Absinthe posters, French copper long-handled pans and chic bistro surrounds set a richly apt scene for the food to come. I brought my family here to celebrate my birthday, as I dearly wanted to introduce them to Christine and her family's cuisine. They were jazzed. After a festive French feast of escargot (always great to watch newcomers young and old step up to try their first snail), double-baked three-cheese soufflé, duck liver pate, garlic-buttered prawns with herbs, L'entrecote beef with Béarnaise, confit of duck a l'orange, and chicken breast stuffed with avocado and brie - they were raving. With chocolate profiteroles, fanfare of Grand Marnier-flamed crepes, and delightful smashing of crème brulee toffee lids - it seemed like everyone's birthday.

You can choose from crepes, creme brulee, creme caramel or other favourites, along with a coffee, for $7.50 at any time of the day. They use Rio coffee, which is strong with a smooth taste, yet somewhat dry aftertaste. It's great with some water on the side to wash away the aftertaste. The staff are more than happy to cater to any coffee requests. I asked for mine latte to be made normally, but poured over ice. The waitress checked that I did want hot milk, not cold milk which won't melt the ice. Since I like textured milk, I went with hot on ice, and it is a beautiful combination - though not for everyone, I'm sure. The food here is quite pricey, and quite traditional. Their list of spirits and wines is impressive. It's just a pity you can't do anything other people's atrocious children, capable of thoroughly spoiling a nice, quiet time.

Nestled in the quiet block of Grenfell St. just steps from Rymill Park this gem is quite abuzz with crepe making energy; there are two types gallettes (savory) and sweet to choose from. we chose gallettes to share, one La Traditionelle ($11.5: ham, egg sunny side up, and swiss cheese) and one Saint Malo ($14.5: ham, sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, basil, and olive oil). You can ask for any egg preparation, I chose scrambled. Opened for long hours each day they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The tiny bistro is a powerhouse of excellent, friendly customer service. It is adequately staffed with friendly counter help who care about your dining experience. The three times I have been there in the last month indicates consistent excellence and quick, though not hurried service. We waited about 10 minutes for a table to become available and we then grabbed a seat at the communal table in the middle of the room. My partner n I ordered 2 lattes which were lovely, they use Fleurieu Milk, and a sweet and a savoury crepe. Our savoury option was the sausage, onion, egg and cheese crepe. The onions were lightly caramelised and the whole dish had been kissed with butter. Our sweet option was banana, chattily, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It was very nice. I believe they make their ice creams on site. The batter for both the sweet n savoury crepe are different, with savoury being much darker. They also have imported French cider, which is meant to be great with a savoury crepe, as well as a selection of local beers too. The staff obviously love working there as they are quite chirpy. After having a look at the menu, I could not go past the opportunity to try the soup of the day. Pumpkin soup has always been one of my favs and it is one that is really comforting on a cold day. The pumpkin soup was served with some lovely toasted bread and butter. It smelt divine when it arrived in front of me. The taste was creamy with a slight chilli flavour. They must have used some sort of Moroccan spices? I think it was a little bit salty for my palate, but it was really satisfying and filling. Courtyard out the back is really cute. The service was cheerful and snappy and the passing life in Ebenezer Place was lively, lots of people seeming to know each other. There was a lot of meeting and greeting around the tiny restaurant entrance. Waiters politely dodged the impediments. Our snails came with proper escargot tongs in the most exquisite garlic and herb butter. The toasty French bread was a bit too crisp to soak up the butter but it was just as well. My friend had Croque Monsieur which was rich and wicked, bechamel sauce and cheese and a fried egg on top . He simply wolfed it down. My boned and butterflied trout with green beans took longer to eat and every morsel was a joy. The trout was nicely charcoal-seared on the skin side and very lightly cooked on top. The tastes and textures sang together in a light buttery sauce from the beans which were not too firm but just right. It was best trout I have ever had and I am still purring with pleasure.
