MADACC is an organization tasked with immense tasks and sometimes unpopular ones. These are the functions they handle for a huge geographic area: * Provide effective and cost efficient animal control services by active enforcement of Wisconsin State Statutes pertaining to animal welfare for the 19 member communities of Milwaukee County * Assure safe, temporary shelter, veterinary and humane care for stray, unwanted, abandoned, mistreated and injured animals, including emergency on-call service between hours of operation * Provide a central location for owners to find and recover their lost pets * Expedite the return of animals to their rightful owner * Provide a progressive animal licensing program for Milwaukee County * Provide and encourage responsible, safe placement opportunities for homeless animals * Promote and maintain the highest levels of customer service and accountability to the public * Educate the public about responsible companion animal ownership * Provide placement of stray and unwanted animals and provide humane euthanasia when necessary In addition to all of this, they frequently hold free vaccination and microchip clinics for people who need it, supported by their charitable board. They give away hundreds of pounds of supplies and toys at these events. The vets, staff, board and volunteers work for hours to do this for the community. I've had the good fortune to volunteer at these and after servicing roughly 900 pets at a recent clinic, I was thrilled to have done something so impactful. Pet owners are so grateful for these services. I've also benefited from their fostering program and adopted two cats into our household, while my BF has rescued another pair. Well it's been two years now and 2 adorable kittens about a year apart who are Bestys who came from who knows where. Maddac has been so nice and helpful with the whole adoption process, they make it easy. To my surprise I found an outdoor kitten and I brought it in for a chip check an no chip was found so was told that I could adopt her and I wasn't looking to home another kitten. What really makes them shine is a homeless kitten with all the medical care and fixing vs the in house kitten gets the same care at like $15 so even if you don't adopt one of there animals they make it super cost effective to bring a stray in and make it very encouraging to adopt thet stray animal with the price incentives when my vet was quoting $600. Overall they do an excellent job at getting animals homes even if you adopt there's with finding a stray, now two kittens are warm and safe. read more

This is a non profit animal shelter where you can adopt, foster, volunteer, care for animals and also help out within the organization. I got to volunteer by walking dogs and it is truly a heartfelt experience. I would recommend for anyone who loves animals and want to give back. Animal shelters aren't the best place for animals so any little thing you can do to help means a lot to these furry animals. They carry other types of animals too like cats, and other animals. Our family went on 1/9/25 because we heard that there was an unusually high intake of dogs over the past week and we wanted to see if we could find a new best friend for my son. They were short staffed and very busy with people bringing in strays, licensing, and surgeries. But they were all very nice and tried to help as much as possible. I didn't give all stars because we were only allowed to see 3 dogs. This put a little pressure on choosing the right one from the binder and the staff member we initially worked with didn't have much contact with the individual dogs and couldn't tell us much. One of the 3 we wanted to see was on an outing and we were told to come back. We came back an hour later and found an amazing dog to bring home. Once we identified the sweetheart we wanted to bring home, the staff made the adoption process a breeze. We are not from the Milwaukee area, Jefferson actually, but we are so glad that we found our "Zeus" at MADACC. read more

Went to MADACC yesterday for their advertised event. Ended up having to wait about a half hour to be helped, even though there were about 5 staff members standing around just talking. We ended up leaving without being able to meet with the dogs. If they advertise an event, they should be more willing to help their visitors. read more

On Oct., 5th 2023 my husband and I went to MADACC to look at some dogs. The staff was beyond fantastic and spent a lot of time with us with absolute patience. Our previous experience with rescue, Humane Society facilities had been awful. Thank You MADACC. We rescued a emaciated dog 3 yrs old at 53 pounds. (German Shepard). We are pleased to say almost 4 months later she is 60 plus pounds and in good health. She has a few quirks but, is learning her new routine and is an absolute joy. We adopted her the same day we saw her other than having to jump through hoops at the other rescues. Please check out the animals there they are the best and need just as much help if not more. I went here to look for a fur baby they had a lot of dogs up for adoption but a lot of dogs was not groomed and had bad odors but that's a warning it is a rescue spot I did end up getting a poodle mix 1month old they did neuter him the day before they sent him home with pain reliever and answer all the questions that I needed to ask they even gave him a two-week check-up exam at a different location for free I'm so happy I will recommend this place for anyone who is looking for a fur baby read more

I brought a stray cat that has been living in my backyard to them, process was easy. And I kid you not, I called after two week to check up on her and they told me they euthanized her. Idk, but she was the sweetest most loving cat ever. Shook to the core. What a wonderful place. They rescue the lost and helpless and help them find homes. Excellent caring staff, mostly volunteer, clean well run but modest facility, ample parking. There's often some interesting drama going on, you can overhear one end of the phone conversations while watching cats hoping to get adopted in front. Very low cost, adoption fees clearly don't cover costs, only $75 for kittens and a mere $25 for adult cats. You can learn about proper pet care from them too. Some really good karma here. read more

I did not have a good experience trying to adopt a kitten from MADACC. I had seen a kitten online that I was wanted to meet and get to know to potentially adopt. When I got there, they let me hold the kitten for a few minuites and then told me to go pay for him. When I asked for medical history (up to date on shots, any prior sicknesses, etc.), temperment and a few other questions they had no answers for me and made me feel bad for asking. The kitten was sneezing and had drainage coming from his nose but they insisted he was healthy and continued pressuring me to adopt before giving me the information I was asking for. I ended up leaving without adopting because I had the sense they were lying to me and really just wanted to get this kitten out the down. Would absolutely not reccommend. read more

Me and my boyfriend went to view a kitten on Sunday May 24 (Finch) and when we went to see her in the provided room, she was perky and active like a kitten should be. The girl told us she came from a foster home and after this ordeal with them that lasted a few days, they told us she was a stray. We went to pick her up on Friday May 29th after she was spayed around noon. We had not heard anything between the time that we met her and the time we picked her up. Dr. Bergeron came out and told us he found ulcers under her tongue but would go away with time. He said he thought it was calicivirus which is very common in cats and would have to work it's way out of the system because it was a virus and there was no medication for something like that. They also mentioned that she wasn't eating as much for the past few days but they didn't make it sound like an issue and just told us to feed her a gravy food because she seems to like that. After that, we took her home and waited for her to perk up to the kitten she was when we first met her which never happened. Her third eyelids were always very visible and she was extremely lethargic still after 24 hours after surgery. She was not eating or drinking either so we took her to St. Paul Vet where they told us she was extremely dehydrated and said they were surprised that she was even spayed as small as she was. He also told us not to give her the meloxicam that was sent home because with her size it could damage her kidneys and be very dangerous. She was 2.5 pounds when MADACC received her on 5/23/2020, then weighed 2.02 pounds on 5/28/2020, and the day of her surgery weighed 1.90 pounds. We took a closer look at the veterinary notes they had for her stay with MADACC and come to find out they were giving her fluids starting on 5/27/2020 because she was dehydrated and continued fluids through 5/28. Some things mentioned in their notes on 5/27 include: VA concerned kitten had not moved much today, appeared gaunt and dehydrated in face, unsure if eating. Notes for 5/28: Did not eat overnight or use litterbox, abdomen tense but ruled out foreign body vs underlying GI disease. Consider abdominal xrays if not eating by evening. After reading these notes it was clear that something was wrong with this kitten. She was dehydrated consistently and not eating or drinking, they gave her fluids at least 4 times within two days. And there were no notes about any xrays that were done so I can only assume they just didn't do them. My question is, why did they continue with the spay surgery when she was only 1.90 pounds, not eating or drinking for the past two days and clearly dehydrated? That is completely unethical. And why were we not told any of this? If we had known that she was sick and had been getting treatment to try to hydrate her and make her feel better, we would have had to pass on her adoption because something like that was not within our means and could not take care of a special needs situation like that. We had to syringe feed her at home because she wasn't eating. She was hovering over her water bowl and not drinking. We called MADACC and basically told them we were not paying thousands of dollars to make sure this kitten got the proper care just two days after we got her. They agreed to take her back if we surrendered her and once she was well, we could take her back. We checked in every day for three days and she was still not well. They were continuing to hydrate her and basically doing what they were already doing before her surgery. We had even told them she was showing weird bathroom habits such as peeing outside of the box and then running for it. We thought maybe she had a uti and even the woman that we talked to said it would be a good idea to look into that to make sure, and they never looked into it. They likely didn't even do any bloodwork. I am extremely dissapointed in the steps this place took with this poor kitten. Total disregard of her health and all they seemed to care about was getting her out the door regardless of her being unhealthy. I fear that she will likely die due to the poor judgment of the staff. Maybe she would have been ok if they had just postponed the surgery and made it a priority to make sure she was eating a drinking normally first on top of gaining a bit more weight. At the end of all this, she was 1.66 pounds. That doctor should be absolutely ashamed. I will never go here again and most definitely will not recommend it to anyone. read more

I love this place because when my puppy was lost my puppy was online as found and sent to this place on Burnham. The reason I gave this place a 1 star rating is the employees there will STEAL your designer animal to line their own pockets. This is a problem. If you have an expensive animal that is lost and sent there, they will try and steal it to sell. I know because it almost happened to me. My dog came in that morning and was on their system. I called them and advised that my dog is on their website. I was asked several questions which I was able to answer. When I got there, my dogs clothes were off and the number was off my animal as well and the dog was ready to be given or sold away. Mind you, I was there within the hour of her being there to pick her up. This should be investigated as animals are part of families, like our children. read more

MADACC is where we found our little Kiwi. He is the sweetest little pup you could ever meet. MADACC does exactly what they say - they do not claim to be vets or claim to know exactly what ailments are associated with every pet they take in. They provide a temporary shelter for all pets and try to connect them to their fur-ever homes. They also support with other things associated with supporting animal ie. Neutering, vaccinating, and being a resource to help pet owners make responsible decisions. They had a very convenient set up to meet all the animals, and was set up in a safe manner during COVID. The most horrible organization I have EVER dealt with in my life on this planet -- the worst communication ever, total incompetence, and with people who demonstrate the least caring and empathy I have ever experienced -- the bitch on my last call repeated at least a dozen times "it's our policy" -- I hope they read this and single her out. My niece found a kitten with severe eye problems and they ended up with him -- she knew I wanted a playmate for my other adopted cat I had found under the same circumstances -- it seemed fate -- I called every single day day for two months to get updates and was told "he's still in foster" -- then on a Friday I call and they tell me "we're considering removing his eye" but leave a message for so an so, which I did. So I call today, on Monday, three fucking days later, for an update -- and they tell me he's been adopted. WTF????? When I ask for an explanation, I get "In the million times you called were you ever told to fill out an application?" No, I said. Oh. sorry, they should have told you. Are you F'ing kidding me? I wish the worst upon that organization, I mean, the absolute worst -- for the organization and all their people, personally -- all those ignorant and uncaring people who should not be involved with any animals in any way, shape or form. read more

The receptionist are rude! The person showing me the dog was nice BUT they didn't inform me all that was wrong with the dog that I wanted to adopt. Actually they stated that he was in good health. Come to find out the dog has a dental disease, missing teeth, and now I that I have had him home for a few days he has developed full blown kennel cough. I have been to MADACC a few times and have always been impressed with their service. First, my boyfriend and I brought in two stray kittens we found in an intersection, and the staff was extremely helpful during the process of handing the kittens over. We have also taken our two cats there for licensing, microchipping, and rabies vaccinations. The three together are $47 (for a Milwaukee cat license), and they offer three-year rabies vaccinations for the same price ($15) after they see your cat one time. They also offer an amazing deal on spaying/neutering once a month. Dogs are $75/$60, and cats are $55/$45. My dog got loose and someone took him to the MADACC. I writing this review because they took a picture of him and put it on their website along with pertinent information within 45 min of arrival! I saw it and picked him up 30 min later. I'm just amazed that they were so quick and efficient. They also have a dozen cats for adaption in cages located in reception area. They handle the pit bulls and pit mixes that end up abandoned, lost or surrendered and they are great at being careful with placement, letting everyone in the family (including pets) get to meet and greet before selecting a new fur baby. I spoke with the rudest woman on the phone. Not helpful, condescending, and absolutely did not have any animals best interest at heart. Not sure if she was having a horrid day, or if she's just a volunteer for her probation.. A friend and I found a dog and have been trying to find its owner. The dog is under weight, scared, and in let's just not desirable condition. My friend has been taking excellent care of her while trying to find the owner/find out what the circumstance was why the dog was in this shape outside an abandoned house in 6th and north. We have been calling to see if there was anyone looking for her, checking Craigslist among other websites with no luck. I called again today to make sure they have the correct contact phone number... The women I spoke with wouldn't let me give her any information, nor asked me a single question regarding the dog. (The dog is a specific breed with very distinguishable characteristics) I wouldn't want this women in charge of the care or safe return of ANY animal. My call was placed 12:30 on 10/26 read more

My experience with MADACC involved a feral kitten I caught in my neighborhood. I think he was born under my porch. The staff at MADACC was able to get him to eat, they began the process of socializing him, gave him his shots and (when he was old enough) neutered and micro-chipped him all for $75. He also had a little cold, either caught there, or perhaps he was brought in with it. The $75 included medication for his URI along with excellent instructions in how to administer it. I was thinking of just keeping the kitten, but I'm so glad I brought him to MADACC first. They keep any animal brought in for up to seven days during which time only the person who brought him in can adopt him. After that, if appropriate for adoption, the animal goes on to the Human Society. I saved a lot of money on veterinary care by taking the kitten to MADACC. The staff at MADACC has experience getting a scared little animal to eat, and socializing what really was a wild animal. He's a great little pet now! Not every feral cat brought in is going to survive or be adoptable. Sometimes MADACC gets a bad rap because they have to euthanize some animals. But the staff there was ecstatic to see a happy ending for my little guy-- I named him Monty. They truly want that for all the animals they care for. read more

Although MADACC doesn't have the extensive adoption programs that some of the local humane societies have, I would encourage you to consider looking here for your next pet. It is one of the least expensive places to adopt a pet, and you truly are saving a life. They also will accept donations, so if you want to try to make life more comfortable for some of the most needy homeless pets in Milwaukee, consider donating some food, treats, toys, or a comfy blanket. If you look at their website they have a wish list of needed items, or if you call them they will mail you a wish list. The staff was very friendly when I brought some donations in. I get the impression they get jaded from dealing with so many mistreated animals but they seem to appreciate it when people are trying to help the animals out. When a stray animal is taken here, the animal is held for 7 days to see if an owner comes forward to claim them. If not, then they try to see if a rescue/humane society will take the animal. However, unfortunately they have to euthanize a high number of dogs and cats (especially cats) because there just isn't enough space for all of them. If more adopters would look for animals here, we could change that sad reality. They aren't really set up for people to just walk through the shelter looking at the animals so the best way to see what animals they have is on their website. If you go to their website and see an animal that you'd be interested in, you can submit an application so that if nobody claims the animal you can meet the animal once the 7 day holding period is up. They get all kinds of animals here: everything from small cute puppies to big dogs, kittens and cats of all kinds...not to mention other random animals including rabbits and chickens! read more

Supposedly, Madacc has a pet food pantry according to their website as well as the Wisconsin humane society. I had called them last summer for food for my two cats, after I had called the humane society and they were out. The woman I talked to was friendly and asked if I had a need. She then asked my name,etc. Went and picked up food, everyone was so nice. 4 months later I once again called due to financial issues. I was put on hold and was asked my name and told to bring an I.D. My neighbor then took me over. I approached the desk stated my name and why I was there. Gone were the friendly staff I had encountered this summer. The older woman I dealt with was less than friendly and when she asked what I was there stated I needed pet food from the pantry. She rudely stated I should have called the humane society (who is always out of food), because they normally don't do this. I then threw back that they shouldn't have this information on there website if they don't do this. They also only work with dog rescues and no cat rescues, so most of the adorable kittens you see on the website are euthanized as well as a lot of their dogs. Really sad when you provide a service and make people feel bad when they come to you for help. You shouldn't be working with animals and the public then. read more
