I wish I could articulate what brain processes led to the "FAJITAS" category screaming out at me…read morewhile I was looking over the extensive Baba's menu but I really can't say. What I can tell you is that I ordered the steak and chicken mixed option fully prepared for it to be a let down but I am so happy I gave them a chance because they were not half bad. As you can see from photos there's nice sized servings of beef and chicken tossed with much more onions, peppers, tomatoes and seasoning than I expected. It also comes with plenty of nicely cooked tortillas for scooping up all the goodness into a couple of tacos as well as shredded lettuce, sour cream, and some of Baba's mild sauce. I like the mild sauce on other menu items like the chicken but don't feel it works very well with the fajitas. I ended up adding some leftover salsa of my own that I had in the fridge. I have to admit that one thing that drew me to this order was a picture I saw on the menu showing that the fajitas came with pita bread as opposed to tortillas. It just seemed like a very intriguing combo to me. I was still happy with the tortillas but have to admit that not being able to satisfy my curiosity did bother me. Would be kind of cool if they gave the option to choose pita or tortillas. I ordered using the Baba's app and the food was ready at the quoted pickup time of 20 mins. The woman cleaning up for closing and working the counter was an absolute sweetheart. Gave the perfect amount of lemon pepper when I said just a little and was just so friendly.

I've been driving past this place for years, giving it the side-eye 'cos I read an unkind review or…read moretwo. Plus, I'm not sure I'm interested in "steak" from a takeout joint in an old Pizza Hut building. (This I know, is unscientific and eventually unfair, but I know what I like). After reading a few Yelps claiming this is a Chicago legend, and some interesting stories about the founder. I figured I'd try it. I almost bailed, 'cos the outer perimeter had more litter than I cared to see, but I remembered my edict that sometimes the worse a place looks, the better the chow. Inside, it was brightly lit, almost garishly so. As funky as it looked outside, it was spotless inside. I didn't see any kitchen equipment in the parking lot, so I didn't the outer circuses sway me. I had read the "GymShoe" (A legendary Chicago comestible-google it) was one of the top choices, so there I went. Also heard their breaded Mushrooms were great, I added it to my order. Didn't look at the receipt after I ordered, and it was a good thing. More on that later. I took a seat and watched the non-stop procession of customers. Each one opening their white clamshell and giving the contents a massive dose of whatever was in the industrial shaker. Now I was intrigued. I sat and I sat and I sat, almost 30 minutes waiting for my food. I thought maybe they forgot about me. I looked at my receipt and it was near $30! For a sandwich and mushrooms? WTF? They finally called me. They handed me a bag that weighed as much as a bowling ball. Inside was an aluminum tray one might find in a catering order. Turns out the "Crispy GymShoe" is an oversized behemoth sandwich with a full order of fresh-cut fries. Well. As I left, he held the afore-mentioned shaker aloft and asked if I wanted "Lemon Pepper" on my sandwich. So THAT was what was in there!! I declined-as it is my custom to always taste the dish the way the chef intended it, before I modify or embellish. I et the sandwich for 3 days, that's how massive it was, and still put a portion out for the backyard critters on the 4th. I never finished the fries. The Mushrooms were good, not great, but they were bit players in the drama-The "CrispyGymShoe" was Brando in this drama. It was a rich, rich sarnie with Gyros, Corned Beef and Italian Beef (I think). along with cheese and grilled onions (again I think). I et about a third of each massive hunk before I had to stop. It was a juggernaut. In the end, it was a good sandwich, not a masterpiece. I kind of carped about the $18.99 price tag above, but this football of a sandwich could probably feed 3 people, maybe 4 if there weren't starving. at $4 per mouth and change, that's a good deal. The menu is massive and I'll return for at least a Gyros. I wonder how the Lemon Pepper would taste with that...
