That's is the Kratom. Which was supposed to be a citrus drink made with Sprite. Didn't look or taste like it at all.
    Camille G.

I went to the ahwatukee location a few weeks ago with a friend. I have had Kratom and Kava several times before and always had a great experience. Our waitress Shiro seemed nice however she wasn't able to explain kava or Kratom to myself and my friend who had never been there before and never had kava or Kratom. Which I thought was odd but didn't think much of it at the time. She brought us our drinks (we both ordered Kratom) and they both looked like muddy water and tasted like straight up plant medicine. In my experience when you order Kratom it's mixed with Sprite and other flavors but these drinks did not present that way or taste that way. My friend was not able to drink hers at all because it was too strong and gave her a headache (she had maybe three sips). Keep in mind the waitress dropped our drinks off told us they were strong and suggested we drink lots of water. My friend and I were there for several hours catching up talking and the waitress never once came back and checked on us, offered water or literally anything. Long story short it turns out the waitress made our drinks with the "bottom of the batch" which is the most concentrated part of the batch. I ended up having a very bad reaction to my ONE drink which I couldn't even finish. I broke out in hives, couldn't walk straight, had the worst case of vertigo ever and projectile vomited for the remainder of the evening. It took TWO full days for the Kratom to get out of my system. BEWARE of this particular location'! This could have been a much worse outcome however I did get medical treatment right away. I will be reporting this company to the Health Department and taking action as poorly managed facilities that serve plant medicine should NEVER EVER have staff that doesn't know literaly everything about what they are serving and how to serve it SAFELY!!!! As a wellness business owner I am a huge advocate of plant medicine and its benefits however this was a dangerous situation. When we called the manager the evening it occurred his response was "don't go to the hospital, she probably just is not used to Kratom" REALLY?!! Thank goodness my friend didn't drink her drink and was able to safely drive me home. This should have never happened. And I don't want this to happen to anyone else.

    Kratom cocktails!

Walking into Mad Hatter Kava Bar for the first time felt like stepping straight into Wonderland--minus the terrifying Queen of Hearts and unsolicited riddles from a sketchy cat. Instead, we were greeted by the amazing Jill, our kava-tender (yes, that's a thing), who whipped up some next-level Kratom and Kava cocktails that had us floating in the most delightful, legal way possible. The drinks? Earthy, magical, and just the right amount of "Did I just become one with the universe?" The vibe? A chill, eclectic mix of friendly faces, trippy decor, and an atmosphere so relaxed it could probably cure road rage. The Alice in Wonderland theme is on point--like, I half expected the Mad Hatter himself to pull up with a tea set and start a philosophical debate. If you're looking for a spot to unwind, vibe with cool people, and sip on something that won't leave you regretting your life choices the next morning, this is it. We'll definitely be back--probably with top hats next time. P.S. Someone please confirm if time actually moves slower in there, or if that was just the kava talking.

This is definitely an interesting concept. They brew kava or katom like a green tea. However I will never go back. The warning of "my mouth going numb" and this was "normal" was enough to send me out the door. I did not feel safe there and not a place I would ever go again. Love the decor though

But a friend wanted to meet for food around the area and this spit popped up on Yelp. It didn't disappoint! I was skeptical at first as having a sign posted at the sidewalk and a bouncer outside the stairs going down, was a sheer sign that this isn't such a secret and speakeasy-like spot. But I was proven wrong very quickly. Dre who was the bouncer and I'd much rather call Drayden, is young but friendly. The hall leading down to the entrance was well decorated. It's hard to miss the door when you can hear people on the other side :). Hostess was nice. Alex immediately introduced himself from behind the bar as I sat down, and Meagan was the main bartender this night. They were both a wealth of knowledge when it came to cocktails. I really wasn't expecting too much but the two drinks I ordered were a solid 5/5. I had the silk bandit and the untold legacy. I like sweet drinks this way. It wasn't too sweet. All the flavors were well balanced and well thought out. They also had a girl singing tonight and she was amazing!!! Thanks for a nice relaxing night. Service was a 5/5 and I'd definitely come back if I'm in the area.

As the self appointed king of speakeasies, I'm back at it with another one. This time was checking…read moreout a speakeasy located in the heart of downtown Gilbert on a Friday evening at 9 p.m. I parked for free on the street before making my way to The White Rabbit. There are some things I really love about The White Rabbit and some that I didn't. Ambiance (3/5): When I think of a speakeasy, I think intimate. The White Rabbit is not that. It's pretty large for a speakeasy with a large bar and a good number of tables/booths. They weren't at capacity while I was there, but there were a good number of people there. Which made it pretty loud. To the point where you have to yell at your bartender when ordering your drink so they can hear you. Perhaps a much different experience on a week day. Getting in the speakeasy was both a hit and a miss. If you're subscribed to their email list, as I am, you get a different password every month. I was excited about this. Upon approaching The White Rabbit, I saw a sign naming the establishment and pointing me in the right direction. This takes away from the spirit of speakeasies which are supposed to be truly hidden without any signage identifying the restaurant. You'll see a velvet rope blocking a stairwell where you tell one of the bouncers the password. I had a reservation. If you don't know the password, as another party there didn't, they ask you to access a QR code to find out or ask others who are waiting. I appreciated the dedication to the cause. Once you get in, you walk down the stairwell, and then enter a cool hallway decked out with Prohibition-style decor. That leads you into the main room. The main room is also Prohibition-style though a bit unremarkable. The bathrooms are clean and also feature some cool paintings (and they also hide that they are actual bathrooms). With that being said, when I liked the hallway and the bathrooms better than the bar itself, that's a bit of an issue. Seats at the bar are bar stools without back support. Never fun for my old man back. I did, on the other hand, appreciate that they have free WiFi. Service (3.5/5): The service was generally pretty good, though a bit slow. They start you off with some water without asking you which is always a nice touch. It was just one of those situations where you have to put some effort into getting a bartender's attention on several occasions. Food (N/A): I had dinner prior so no food for me. I did check out the menu. They have a small selection of appetizers, flatbreads, and desserts. Drinks (3/5): When I'm at a speakeasy, I'm looking for creativity and an interesting blend of ingredients and flavors. While The White Rabbit has a good number of cocktails, many of them didn't attract me. Part of it is a matter of personal preference. There were only two drinks out of about 20 that I was interested in. Overall, I wanted a little more, but with that being said, the drinks were reasonably priced for a speakeasy. Not a bad speakeasy by any means, I have super high standards when it comes to these watering holes. Just not in my top five when it comes to speakeasies in Phoenix and surrounding areas.

PARLOUR DOOM Came…read morethrough on a Saturday night and this small bar was packed and only took about 50 people piled in there to fill it up. The place was not called ROOM for nothin. It felt about the size of a Master Bedroom. There were two 'rooms' actually; the main room and a smaller adjacent room, which would be like a big walk-in closet to this Master Bedroom. The big room had a few standing tables and the small room had some chairs and couches with tables that you can actually sit at. The smaller room contained a mini bar area that that you can also sit at, but was not being used to serve at the time. This master bedroom had a Master of Ceremonies playing music, but he was definitely a Master of Disaster on the turn tables. This D.J. had a pattern where he would play a song and maybe 20 seconds into it, people would start feeling the music, but then he would switch the song. Talk about killin the vibe! Well, there was no cover charge, so maybe that's why there's a neon sign in there that says "No Free Vibes". It was like they were the Vibe Nazis. The other atrocity was how he was tried to mix the tracks. He was trying to mix songs from every genre of every decade. The DJ was overlapping newer songs with older songs, maybe to cater to the age range of the crowd, but the result sounded like he was just messing around for the first time on new turn tables he got for Christmas. He tried to mix songs which didn't even go together or have a mixable beat i.e. 'Macarena' and 'In the End' by Linkin Park. This abomination was an insult to the artists and fans of music in general. To make things worse, the DJ tried to hype the crowd by talking over the mic intermittently, but all he accomplished was interrupting the songs. I almost had second-hand embarrassment for him. It would have been better if he just had a recorded track of songs and just played the preset music. I think you are better off paying for your vibes elsewhere if you want to dance or hear music. You would think, getting people drunk makes everything better and more fun, right? Well if you can't get them drunk because the bar service was taking such a long time, then you are gonna have a lot of bored, sober customers. I did not drink but all I know, for the rest of my group, it was taking 15 minutes to get a couple simple cocktails. You could probably walk to the liquor store across the street and chug a beer quicker than you could get a round of drinks. This place has potential. It was not a bad space overall for a lounge type bar. The décor, aesthetic, and lighting gave it a nice ambiance. They just need to get adequate staff to serve the drinks and play music.

We made a reservation through Open Table. There is no additional cost to reserve a table, which is great since most other similar spots either had a cover fee or you had to buy tickets for the live performance. Upon arrival, our table was ready right when we showed up. The service was excellent throughout the night considering how busy it was in there. Our waitress was so patient, especially considering how long we took to make a decision on what we were going to order. The lighting was very nice, the music was great. We spent about 3 hours here enjoying the atmosphere. The food was very good, and prices were low! The drinks (which we did not partake in) were pricey, but seemed to have a great selection. There was a full bar & a handful of "signature" drinks to choose from. We ended up keeping it simple & getting the Wagyu Burger & Fries. I upgraded to onion rings. It took a little while to get our food, but we were in no rush. The burgers were cooked exactly how we wanted them, and tasted fresh. The onion rings and fries were delicious. The lounge also has another restaurant called "Vybe" attached, with similar food offerings, and a DJ instead of a live band. It's a bit quieter in that area. They also have karaoke suites for rent, which is a really cool option for people who are having a party. A waitress was kind enough to give us a tour of all these areas within the restaurant, and give us all the details about what packages are offered. All in all, we had such a nice night out and will definitely be back in the future.

This is actually a food truck, which is parked on the side of the Tipsy Catcus, which is a really cool brewery I also checked out while I was waiting for my order. This is a really chill brewery, and not a huge spot. Maybe 8 to 10 high top tables with bar seating, and a mostly open floor plan. They have a small patio too, with what looks like about another tables but because I visited at night, nobody was outside. They also seem to be extremely dog friendly as they had one table with a really chill cocker spaniel completely laid out on his side in the middle of the floor. I'm not sure how many taps they had in total, but definitely more than 40 I would say. I'm not a big beer drinker, so I ordered a cider. The cider I was served was on tap and really tasty. And it definitely hit the spot of terms of price point. One thing to note, while I was talking to the owner/manager of the tipsy cactus (shout to him because he was really cool), he told me that Friday night and Saturday nights are usually popping so I wouldn't expect to be first in line on any of those nights. It also looks like they rotate food trucks on different nights, so don't assume that the cheesesteak truck is going to be here every night. I would check the tipsy cactus website, or Instagram page to be sure. I'll definitely be looking forward to checking this place out again in the future, especially if I'm hitting one of the food trucks parked outside.
