Started out as a butcher, but now they are more famous for their pies…read more I spotted this shop as soon as we exited the Kew Gardens station and crossed to the other side. I just HAD to walk in. They did not have any pies that were ready to eat, but I did try a sausage roll and the pastry was absolutely flakily and mouth meltingly amazing. Personally I'd like a bit more spice in my sausage, but I am in London after all and it was a good sausage. They had a variety of pies to take home to be baked, but I didn't want to carry them all over the gardens and unfortunately this shop closes at 6 (gardens close at 6:30) so I couldn't pick them up on my way back either. Maybe on a future trip when rains send me scurrying out of the gardens early??? Very friendly staff and service. UPDATE : On my last visit to Kew, I was accompanied by a friend and her 10 year old, who obviously got tired much before the park closes its gates, so I was able to stop here and buy some pies to take home. The Steak & kidney pie was awesome as were the sausage rolls. (They sell them frozen, you just need to pop them in the oven) I even picked up some fresh Cumberland sausages - Italian (sundried tomatoes, basil), a spicy version and a herby garlicky one. I roasted them in the oven with some potatoes and they came out lovely, the skins were perfect and the fat from the sausages crisped up the taters nicely.

I also think Butchers play an important role and its so much better to see the meat your eating like this than as the plastic, packaged, processed stuff in supermarkets. Pethers is such a wonderful butchers selling not just free range meat and poultry but also a selection of fine cheeses, pickles and hot sauce. The meat all looks such good quality and the smell is even appealing! (I've walked passed so many butchers in the city with stinking ill looking carcasses that it is so refreshing to find a quality place). More over, this year Pethers joined a green movement with other shops in Kew to become more ethically sound and has stopped using, or giving out plastic bags. So for the conscientious and fine meat loving carnivore this is a great place to go.

The quality of their produce is top notch - for example, one Sunday lunch my sister bought a whole lamb shoulder (over 2 kilos) to roast for a few hours. Between the five of us, we ate THE WHOLE THING. It was just that good. I don't think I could ever describe lamb as being more-ish, but none of us could stop. HG Walter offer a comprehensive selection of meats including the lesser known cuts, game and special items every week (seasonal animals, specialty meats such as rare-breed pork etc.). They have a large variety of sausages (usually more than 10), really tasty burgers (particularly their lamb and mango one), and some pre-prepped stuff such as marinaded chicken breasts, kebabs, and prepared quail. Also, if you ask for them, they'll provide you with very cheap bones/carcasses for stock making which makes some damn tasty stock. They also sell eggs, some pretty decent local vegetable produce, some cheeses and deli items (a small pate selection including their excellent pate campagne, olives, olive oils, and a variety of condiments from companies such as Tracklements and Seggiano). Although the place is always busy (they're open until 7 which is perfect for the walk home), as mentioned by Vikki the line diminishes very quickly. The staff are great, they're always friendly and helpful. If you're not quite sure which cut to buy, they'll ask you how you're cooking it and will offer an appropriate suggestion. Likewise, if they're out of stock of one thing, they'll suggest an appropriate replacement (and not just upsell more expensive cuts). Shopping here is an absolute pleasure. In terms of price, it's not cheap cheap but cheaper than the some of the big name butchers in London. Their cheaper cuts are great value when you consider the quality - the belly pork is one of my staples at 7 quid a kilo and I find I can just about afford it on my PhD stipend. In conclusion: as I said before, I'd happily travel across town to shop here. A very enjoyable shopping experience and that's before you've even tasted their food. One last tip: their Scotch Eggs are absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD. Trust me. The crunchiness of the breadcrumbs, tastiness of the oniony-sausagey inside and the soft egg. They're a total steal.

Skewers of marinated meat, stuffed chicken breats, gorgeous varieties of sausages (I can reccomend the chilli, but be prepared for some big heat!), and a chock deli section complete with luxury cheese and unbelievable pork pies. Also shelving behind with top quality dry goods and jars, and a small area of organic vegetables outside. And if you want a summer treat, get one of their handmade burgers, a ciabatta roll and a barbie. Sheer bliss! I used to rate Moen and Sons in Clapham as my top sausage provider, but they are now facing some stiff competition!

It's probably the fact that this small shop has 3-4 butchers who are cranking out cuts of meat with serious speed yet friendly service. I've never seen a main street butcher so busy. One butcher proceeded to make an entire order of Milanese from scratch. And from scratch I mean he butchered a chicken, filleted the breast and breaded it. As he handed me the fresh Milanese he said it was also his daughter's favorite meal so he had to make sure my daughter had her favorite dinner. Old school values in a modern butcher. I asked the lady helping me which sausages were the best and a worker was putting sausages in the case said "Everything!!" He was right. Everything we tried was soooo good! Almost everything they sell is so meticulously prepped that all you have to do is bake/cook/grill. Or if that's too difficult, you can buy a pre-made pie. If Holly Golightly was a carnivore, she would have stalked the windows here and not Tiffany's. The fare here is presented like fine jewelry. That's why I gotta marry Oprah. Love this butcher…read more The staff are happy, knowledgeable, and their prices are absolutely fantastic! having bought a huge piece of pork belly enough for 4 people for 7quid, i don't think ill be getting my meat anywhere else. Even if they don't have what you're looking for in stock, you can special order most things before 4pm and get it the next day around noon (you will have to pick it up). All in all, great produce, great staff, great prices.

They also sell fresh eggs - to my surprise when I got them home they were all double-yolkers! Great value! We got a couple of nice tender lamb chops one week, a rack of lamb the next. The boys will give you suggestions on how to cook it if you want - just be careful when you go because it can get quite busy for example on Saturday mornings.

I went in to this shop trying to track down a hard to find Mexican cheese, well hard to find here…read morein the UK, you can't escape it in Mexico! The lovely lady in the shop couldn't help me but she did come up with some suggestions for alternative cheeses and we had fun sampling a few different ones. I walked away with an aged Italian cheese, nothing like what I went in to the shop looking for but it was so luscious I couldn't say no. I also found in the shop, (a HUGE surprise!) two Spanish sauces that I had discovered on holiday and have been searching in England for ever since. So I wasn't able to find my Mexican cheese, but I was happily reunited with two wonderful sauces. Happy days!
