I can't say enough good things about this place. I'm fortunate enough to live about a 5 minute walk from the place, but even if I lived in East London I wouldn't hesitate to venture down here to buy my meat. The quality of their produce is top notch - for example, one Sunday lunch my sister bought a whole lamb shoulder (over 2 kilos) to roast for a few hours. Between the five of us, we ate THE WHOLE THING. It was just that good. I don't think I could ever describe lamb as being more-ish, but none of us could stop. HG Walter offer a comprehensive selection of meats including the lesser known cuts, game and special items every week (seasonal animals, specialty meats such as rare-breed pork etc.). They have a large variety of sausages (usually more than 10), really tasty burgers (particularly their lamb and mango one), and some pre-prepped stuff such as marinaded chicken breasts, kebabs, and prepared quail. Also, if you ask for them, they'll provide you with very cheap bones/carcasses for stock making which makes some damn tasty stock. They also sell eggs, some pretty decent local vegetable produce, some cheeses and deli items (a small pate selection including their excellent pate campagne, olives, olive oils, and a variety of condiments from companies such as Tracklements and Seggiano). Although the place is always busy (they're open until 7 which is perfect for the walk home), as mentioned by Vikki the line diminishes very quickly. The staff are great, they're always friendly and helpful. If you're not quite sure which cut to buy, they'll ask you how you're cooking it and will offer an appropriate suggestion. Likewise, if they're out of stock of one thing, they'll suggest an appropriate replacement (and not just upsell more expensive cuts). Shopping here is an absolute pleasure. In terms of price, it's not cheap cheap but cheaper than the some of the big name butchers in London. Their cheaper cuts are great value when you consider the quality - the belly pork is one of my staples at 7 quid a kilo and I find I can just about afford it on my PhD stipend. In conclusion: as I said before, I'd happily travel across town to shop here. A very enjoyable shopping experience and that's before you've even tasted their food. One last tip: their Scotch Eggs are absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD. Trust me. The crunchiness of the breadcrumbs, tastiness of the oniony-sausagey inside and the soft egg. This small family butcher's is just packed full of unspeakably good stuff. There's the standard range of sausages, joints of meat and mince, but these guys take it to the next level! Skewers of marinated meat, stuffed chicken breats, gorgeous varieties of sausages (I can reccomend the chilli, but be prepared for some big heat!), and a chock deli section complete with luxury cheese and unbelievable pork pies. Also shelving behind with top quality dry goods and jars, and a small area of organic vegetables outside. And if you want a summer treat, get one of their handmade burgers, a ciabatta roll and a barbie. Sheer bliss! I used to rate Moen and Sons in Clapham as my top sausage provider, but they are now facing some stiff competition! read more

"Woohoo! as good as it gets!" says the rating. Can't say fairer than that. Those of us lucky enough to live westside are serviced by four butchers of real renown. Macken Bros in Turnham Green, Stenton in Hammersmith, Lidgate in Holland park and HG walter in Baron's court. Well I live 2 mins from stenton and I have to say that I choose the 15 min hike (ok 5 minute drive) to HG walter. This is a serious butcher. The staff know everything there is to know about their meat and also a lot about how to cook it. Their counter is presented beautifully and they have all sorts of cuts from traditional to more obscure stuff. sweetbreads, osso bucco, onglet, all regulars, and what's not i the counter is usually available downstairs. Of course you can order absolutely anything in advance and they will oblige. Their butchery skills are brilliant, and the stuff they marinade themselves (I'm a keen cook so don't give in to it but some of my lazy friends do) are beautiflly done too. Prices are high but value for money is key to this and that's what you get here. A beautifully hand made scotch egg using free range british pork will cost you £2. As I said it their review, peoples supermarket take note. They will always oblige you on bones for stock and although the queues are out of the door all day saturday, they never rush you and are always wanting to make sure you're happy. Service there is exceptional. Queues get seen to quickly because they have 6 peope serving on a saturday. It's fantastic just to watch. Going to HG Walter has become a saturday morning ritual for me and the boy (missus is glad to wait i the car looking out for traffic wardens-she's squeamish anyway). And as a keen cook I feel incredibly lucky to ave such an amazing resource a bike ride away. Nobody on here should give 5 stars lightly. This place absolutely deserves it. Minus points? You can't park round there if you're in the car. But, get this, they DELIVER ANYWAY!!! Get on down and learn something about great meat from charming experts who are happy to help. read more

This is the BEST BUTCHER IN THE WORLD. Are you listening Yelp? THE BEST IN THE WORLD. I live on Baron's Court Road, so I walk past in every day, and without fail, it's busy. Yet you never have to wait too long, and the staff are SO polite - and so knowledgeable - that you don't even care when you do. The quality of their meat is outstanding, and is by far the best steak, chicken, mince, bacon and sausages I've ever had. Their cheese is delicious, and the Vinci olives are beautiful. The specialist sauces, pastas and deli items they also import, are the best you can get - and there's a decent selection of fruit & vegetables outside. Of course you pay for what you get, but it's worth it every time. I go in at least twice and week, and will happily continue to do so. read more

Delightful local butcher shop. As soon as we moved in, neighbours began telling us about it. We went in and got some delicious sirloin steaks. This is some of the best steak I've had in London. It wasn't as cheap as a grocery store clearly - but wasn't far off the price of M&S steaks but was a much thicker and tastier cut! The butchers and assistants are friendly, offering advice on how to prepare the items. While I was getting my order rung up, a few other regular locals came in and they knew all of their orders without having to ask. Very personal service, and quality meats. Apparently one of the customers is addicted to the Cumberland sausages, will have to try those next time. In addition to meat they have some great antipasto items, organic vegetables and the items you need to put a gourmet meal together. I love that this place is only a few minutes walk away. Yup - a darn good butchers. Best thing for me is the opening hours - always been a race to pick up my Friday night steak, but this place is super convenient. Friendly service, obviously well sourced and butchered meats, interesting and top class 'accoutrements' such as sauces, salamis, dairy and a small veg section. I'm so surprised that no one has reviewed these folks before. They are super close to me, and I stop here about once a week to buy meat for whatever meal I'm cooking, and the occasional veg or cheese when I've forgotten something during a grocery run. They do organic and free range meats, and poultry & game as well. One day I'll be adventurous and try some of the game they offer. Very professional and always friendly, the ladies and gentlemen behind the counter always seem ready to help. They're very amiable, and can offer suggestions on cooking and pairings. They also vacuum pack meats, so if you'd like to take stuff home but are afraid of leaks or need the extra protection the do that. Lovely sausages, marinated chicken breasts and all kind of cuts of meats I've never had before. I find the meats I get from them have more flavor and the sausages can't be beat in my opinion. I love their pork & leek variety. They also have a small cheese selection towards the back of the case and veg out front., as well as condiments and delicatessen selections. read more

Great quality meat, coupled with a tasteful selection of vegetable and other produce. I wish I cooked more often to justify shopping here more frequently but alas, on the few occasions I popped in for chicken or meat or vegetable, it did not disappoint. Pricing is higher than your average produce from Waitrose. The customer service is what is so refreshing here. They are attentive, intelligent and know their products like no one else. I have moved away from my local butcher, so I bought a bike to ride there. I've tried others, but their lamb is great...the chickens are exceptional. We order from HG Walter regularly, and have done for the past 5 years. The delivery service is so convenient. We recently had a sirloin roast for a birthday lunch and it was the best we've ever eaten - everyone asked where it came from: "HG WALTER of course!"
