The first Paxton & Whitfield cheese shop was opened in 1797 and is located on Jermyn street just across from Fortnum and masons. They have an excellent variety of quality cheeses including cheeses from the British isles. Their truffle cheese are particularly excellent. Service is very professional and those working at the store are very knowledgeable about the cheeses. While upscale with a traditional ambiance, the store is also fresh and modern. They have also recently started up a 'Cheese Club' membership where members receive a seasonal selection of farmhouse cheeses either monthly or bi-monthly. I had to make a stop when walking back down the hill Teddington Cheese is a wonderful cheese shop with a variety of cheese which belies its size. The cheeses are all laid out with a card explaining the origin and description of each cheese. Shelf upon shelf of cheeses coming from as close as Godstone in Surrey to other parts of the UK and abroad, including places like the Nordic countries. I was also very impressed by the service. I asked for a mild hard goat's cheese and the owner introduced me to Ticklemore for Devon. When asked what was good at the moment, he recommended the Pont l'Eveque, which had matured more for a depth of flavour. I finished off my triumvirate of cheeses by choosing Torta, a very creamy mix of layered gorgonzola and mascarpone with the mascarpone cutting down some of the pungency of the gorgonzola. I was offered samples of all the cheeses. Another nice touch is that they include a little card with all the cheeses that you purchase with the name and little description about it Being a good cheese shop, there were also some nice biscuits and condiments like quince jelly. Luckily for a mouse like me, Teddington Cheese is too far away to be a regular haunt or I could go broke and become fat very easily!

They also offer an online delivery service if you're buying too much to carry home (hey cheese is heavy you know!) and a really useful 'Ask The Expert' page where you can e-mail them all things cheesy. Great for when you're not sure which wine will go with your new purchase. And as the blackboard in the window says, "What's a party without cheese?"
