We flew into RDU and it was a bit after 10pm last Friday when we got to the Courtyard Marriott in Cary. Hotel food / beverage options were closed. We noticed MacGregor Draft House within walking distance. Of course airline pretzels and stroopwaffles left us feeling a bit like the Donner Party but 10PM also says eat light or invite Stephen King into your dreams. Staff were all exceedingly accommodating and genuinely friendly. The space was large and with a good crowd watching Oregon wishing they missed their flight to Atlanta but pleasantly the noise level allowed us normal conversation without requiring screaming and me sitting on my wife's lap like a huge toddler. The bartender was quick and efficient whipping up a very welcome Paloma and a frosty beer. We ordered tuna (truly fresh like there was a dock nearby) nachos. While initial order input mistakenly delivered onion rings they apologized and comped the rings and quickly brought correct order. Very fortunate mistake as the rings were the right balance of beer batter to onion. Highly recommended! read more

I will say the bartenders are very nice, and the food is exactly what you'd expect at a bar. Also, they accommodate large groups well (usually in the dining area from my experiences). Love coming here for trivia night. Tonight I had the $4 margarita special and the chicken tacos. Both were good, but the tacos were kinda cold and chicken was a little dry. I really liked the green sauce they were topped. We were seated for 10-15 minutes without service, but once we found someone to wait in us, our order was taken and food and drinks came out quickly. Three beef patties covered with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions & pickles all inside toasted brioche. The bacon queso on the fries was really heavy, but when it's one of those tough periods, you don't really mind! We were immediately sat and the server was kind and friendly-his first day out of training and he did well! The menu is typical bar food but seems like the POS isn't super user friendly. Our food was super quick-I will say our kid's chicken tenders arrived immediately and were great. Our orders were messed up a bit, and the server who delivered them was not happy about that. The worst part of the meal-was the onion rings. They had almost no batter and were so soggy. They were awful. There just aren't any memorable things about this spot to entice our return. read more

We've heard good things about this restaurant from friends and family. We came in on a saturday night. We waited forever to be seated for a table of 3. It seemed as if management was unaware of anything happening in the restaurant as they looked lost. We tried to catch the attention of the bartender but no luck. My book club decided to try this place out for one of our meetings. The environment was welcoming, seating was comfortable and the service was good. I ordered the onion rings and the Classic Cobb Salad with a Twist (ranch instead of the green goddess dressing). Let's start with the onion rings. They were great. The batter was crispy and I was able to bite through the batter and onion itself. The salad was also delicious. I loved the combination of ingredients-chicken, avocado, boiled egg and blue cheese crumbles. I was a little confused because I ordered ranch dressing but the lettuce was tossed in a vinaigrette dressing and the ranch was on the side. I'll be sure to mention no vinaigrette next time. I came to the MDH for lunch on a Friday afternoon recently with some relatives. The atmosphere was lively and the building is very open. Many televisions playing mostly sports related content. Our server was Raven, who was friendly and made great recommendations on the menu and drinks. Two of us had Cobb Salads, one had wings, and I had grilled Buffalo Chicken wrap. The food arrived in a timely fashion, around 12-15 minutes. Everyone was pleased with the food quality and there were no complaints. My family & I have been going here for years. Today we ordered 3 steak melts $16 each (yes expensive) & each one was slightly different. I was told this was a delicious sandwich, worth the price because of the amount of meat you get. They did great on accommodating each sandwich order but that's where it stops. When my steak melt without onions arrived, I checked the sandwich to make sure it was correct. I found HUGE wads of fat on both sides of my sandwich. You know when you get a large piece of beef maybe for pot roast and see a nice thick, round chunk of fat - it helps with flavor but you don't serve this to people. Apparently the cooks at MacGregor Draft House feel differently. The fat on my sandwich came to 2oz of solid fat. Yes, I picked any & all meat I could. Chefs simply take two forks to pull the fat away from the meat, especially when the meat is as tender- it doesn't take much effort at all. The meat didn't have flavor, definitely needed seasoning. Because the cooks decided these HUGE chunks were "edible" & slapped them on the sourdough, the bread absorbed ALL of the grease- making it soggy and disgusting. Nor was the bread actually toasted. I'm beyond upset over paying for literal fat sandwich. I get we are in a difficult economy but that makes it even more important to serve people proper food and exactly what they pay for. I will not return to MacGregor Draft House. Honestly, I'd like a refund but I highly doubt MacGregor draft house would do it. All I could eat in the end was the meat. So upsetting- DO BETTER! Came here for the 1st time and prob will be my last. Came right at noon. In the hour ish I was there I could hear everyone in the kitchen complaining about orders and people. Someone at 12:04 came out of the kitchen as they opened and was complaining that there were already people in the restaurant. I chuckled at that but isn't that what a restaurant is for? Lots of loud conversations back there. I ordered wings but was unsure of what sauce to get. The server offered to bring a small sample of both so I could try. She offered, I never asked. 3 minutes later I can clearly hear someone ask the server why they needed to give her the samples. She explained why. It didn't sound like the kitchen was going to help or give her anything. I even made a comment "didn't sound like the kitchen wanted to give you these". Someone in my group ordered a salad without croutons. 10 minutes later the salad comes out with croutons. We explained nicely to the server that she's allergic to gluten and that why she ordered it without the croutons. Server then goes back with the salad and we can hear the conversation or should I say the kitchen complaining on why the salad came back. I had to explain it to someone else why along with telling him that we can clearly hear everything going on back there. They didn't seem to care. This place seems to be ran by children and not adults. I'm embarrassed for whomever owns this establishment. It seemed to be a circus mixed with a shit show. The good value pricing raises my review to a 4. Was staying at the Marriott across the street for a week, ended up going here for 6 nights due to the sheer convenience. Service is hit and miss, but be sure to ask about the daily drink specials which are a great deal. The chicken breasts and steamed vegetables was the best dinner. I had most things on the menu. The lighting is too bright for a bar though, but there are plenty of TVs to watch all the sports on. A server even put "Below Deck" on for me haha. No volume of course. It saddens me to write this review because I use to LOVE this place. Friends and I would frequently the MDH at least once a week if not twice. The bar service remains outstanding, but the food has taken a dive. They use to have the best burgers and onion rings. The rings were huge fresh hand beer battered cooked to perfection. Now they look like over processed frozen from a bag. The homemade dressings are a joke. Not sure what "ranch" is, but it is not ranch. The soups were one of my favs, but know they taste like powdered soup that they add water to. The last two times I ordered soup with crackers they've been out of crackers. Really? Oh, and I asked for mayo on the side and they handed me two packets of mayo. Even the packets of mayo were discussing. It was some no-name brand that was runny like milk. PLEASE, review your menu MDH! Even if you have to offer less make it quality food, please. read more

I really enjoyed my Octoberfest brew and was sure to request fries (an extra charge) instead of potato chips with my delicious pulled pork sandwich. Overall, people liked the beers and food. However, they should really note on the menu in HUGE LETTERS THAT ALL THE **SALADS** come topped with DEEP FRIED CHICKEN FINGERS unless otherwise told "NO MEAT" explicitly or I'd like shrimp instead, and so on. It is truly unusual. In my many years on the planet, I've never seen this on a menu, and I just happened to notice this note in very tiny print. I can't imagine that how many times a day that they have to remake the salads. Also, please do not make special requests or any substitutions, if you can avoid it. I used to frequent this place when I first moved down to NC back in 2006. I don't know what has happened but it has gone severely down hill. I came in today at 11:30 for lunch. It was seat yourself, so I did. I was noticed pretty quickly but then ignored by the woman who brought me my water until one of the bartenders noticed that I had shut my menu and was waiting. She took my order and my food came out pretty quickly. I flagged down another waitress and asked if I could have some extra Thousand Island for my sandwich and ranch for my fries. She brought both pretty quickly. The Reuben had hardly any meat on it for a $15 sandwich. The fries were good, but the sugary syrup they served looked like honey in its consistency. Not a fan. I was only over in that area because my hairdresser recently moved to the Sola Salon right across from them. If I have another appointment for lunch I won't make the effort to come back. Great place for a quick, flavorful takeout meal. We stopped here on a weekday evening to pick up an online order. It was easy to order and pay online and our order was ready upon arrival. Ample parking is available and the restaurant is easy to get to from the ground level. We ordered the pickle chips ($6.99) and Buffalo sandwich ($9.49). The Buffalo sandwich was difficult to eat, but it tasted good. The pickle chips seemed pricy, but you get a ton! Plus they are crunchy and delicious. Some are just a little too salty. Stopped here after going to the 2023 NC Chinese Lantern Festival. It was probably around 7:30 pm and we walked in and was seated immediately. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer and they didnt disappoint. The appetizer was a healthy portion for 4 people and is served with ranch dressing dip. Forgot to take pics of our food but for our meals we ordered the Fish and Chips as well as the 10 oz ribeye with fries. Both were cooked well. The hubs did say the steak was a little grissly but had a great flavor. Price point...$$. The atmosphere is casual with TV screens at almost any angle to watch your favorite sport. Our servers were wonderful and attentive. The only negative was two of the three stalls in the women's bathroom were clogged. We will definitely go back when we are in the area again! read more

I, along with many other long-time customers, have always valued the style of service we enjoyed prior to recent changes. The shift away from the original style of service where staff could flexibly move throughout the restaurant based on customer needs has significantly altered the traditional MacGregor experience. The sense of community formed between long-time staff members and regular patrons is what keeps many decades-long returning customers coming back. The shift to section-style service has created visible inefficiencies, longer wait times, and frustration. Additionally, I have been disappointed by some of the tried-and-true classic dishes being removed or modified on the menu. My goal with this review is simply to offer constructive feedback in the hope that you maintain a customer-centric experience, that the staff--who are the heart of this place--remain supported and valued, and that MacGregor continues to be the place we know and love. read more

Sat at the bar. Kind of a sports bar atmosphere. Service was good and ordered fish and chips. Then I found out the chips are POTATO chips and not fries. I never ran into that before when ordering fish and chips. You have to specifically ask for fries. Food came out after not too long of a wait. The menu said the haddock was beer battered but the fish I got had some type of cornmeal breading. The fish was dry with not much flavor. All in all the place is ok if you're staying at the nearby hotel, but if I lived in the area, I'd go somewhere else for dinner. read more

My husband and I are regulars at MacGregor. We love the people that work there and we loved the food. The food changed when new owners took over and it wasn't the same. They have the best wait staff (Sam, Jordan, Rachel, Justin, Ian, Evan, Reese, Jade) and managers (Robin) so we continued going. I posted a not so nice review when the change happened. We really wanted to find another place to go but everyone treated us so nicely. We felt like family so we kept going back. Now, the menu has been updated and WOW what a difference!! We went tonight and the food was really good! I had stopped eating the food there. But now I am excited to try everything on the menu! Everything we had tasted really good (fried cheddar bites, French onion soup, smash burger, beignets). Our dog Kenan loved the hamgurbers too! :) My favorite of the night was the beignets!! Went to MacGregors last night with some hope in my heart for a good burger and that was quickly dashed. I should've gotten wings like my friend did, but after the burger was recommended by the waiter I decided to go with their ground beef burger medium well protein style. The burger came out a little cold with a little big of lettuce to wrap it with and tons of onion and mushrooms. The toppings were falling all over the place, so I asked for more lettuce, which helped, but did not help the taste. What helped a little was the fries and trying one of my friends wings, which I really should've gotten. The burger needed help! What a disappointment. Went about two weeks ago and had a 5-star experience. The food was awesome (Mediterranean salad with grilled salmon and the meatloaf dinner) and the staff super attentive. Fast forward to this past Saturday. (We convinced 2 other couples to join us because we had had such a good experience). The first surprise was a one page menu-2 weeks ago, bigger, lots more variety. The menu now has appetizers, burgers, couple sandwiches, salads and a few "entrees". The staff was once again attentive (the reason for the star, otherwise it would be zero). We asked about the new menu and were told they now had new owners. Uh-oh... Got our drinks quickly and placed our orders. After 45 minutes (at 7:00p), 3 of the six orders were brought to the table. Ten minutes later, 2 more. Every time a staff member asked how we were doing, we pointed out the missing dinner (Philly steak sandwich) and they would come back to tell us the kitchen was backed up. We watched other tables being served, so that didn't make sense. Finally, the dinner arrived (7:30p). It was brought by the manager who apologized. We told him that at this point an apology wasn't meaningful. Wont share the rest of the exchange, but clearly he and the rest of the staff were feeling extremely frustrated and embarrassed. They were all the same folks who were delightful 2 weeks ago. So table service doing their best, but the kitchen a disaster. The food was sub-par to say the least. Early on a Saturday night and they are out of turkey burgers, so she ordered chicken. The fries are frozen, not fresh cut. The meatloaf was dry and the green beans burned. The baked potato skin was burned; the steak was cooked to order. The chicken breast on the sandwich was still pink. The candied pear and endive salad was missing the spring greens and endive and the house-made hazelnut vinegarette was overly tart balsamic vinaigrette with some chopped hazelnuts. So disappointed. Two weeks ago we decided it would be our go to (the overall ambiance is good) place. Now, we'll watch the reviews to see if/when it returns to its better self. read more

New ownership recently has led to a significant decline, in my opinion. Menu choices have been cut quite noticeably including crowd favorites. Very limited vegetarian choices now. All salads now come with chicken. Meatloaf was barely edible when it used to be one of my favorites. New point of sale system seems great but my appetizer which was entered into the system never arrived. Maybe it'll get better but there's too many choices to.
