If you're looking for a place that has an Irish pub vibe then this is your place! I was here twice…read moreduring my stay in Brazil and both times it was ok. The first time was on a random Tue night and they had a guitarist singing popular oldies. They also had 2-for-1 drink specials for the ladies. Oh, and I ordered their wings and they were pretty delicious. I always end up eating too much when I'm drinking in a bar type setting. The second time I was here was a Wed night? Something random... There were definitely a lot of locals, but they spoke English pretty well. All the workers here also were able to communicate pretty easily in English so that was good. The bathrooms are located upstairs and I think when it gets more busy they actually open the upstairs up for people to sit. This is your typical bar... They mark your paper with all the drinks you order then you pay at the end of the night before you leave.

A couple of us in our group came back from paying and said as much. One very smart friend of mine slipped the drink menu into his pocket when he went to pay - and when told the inflated price, he pointed to the menu and said "I had this, and this, should be only $20 reais (or whatever the price was). The girl went to get her manager. The manager arrived and confirmed the price. My friend said "What is the extra charge for?" The manager said, "It's for the band." There was NO BAND! We had been there for hours and no one played. The manager finally backed down. These people like to prey on homesick gringos. Don't be one of them. Eat down the street at Redentor; drink at Che Lagarto. Anywhere but Lord Jim Pub.

Semi-pub-ish kinda place, with…read morea decent selection of food (burgers look great! but too bad I don't take beef...), ordered rice balls which were decent. Another friend ordered their fish and chips, which was not what I expected - big portion of fish fingers and a whole load of wedges being passed off as fries. All in, it was good. Dessert was nothing to shout about though - we shared a brownie and were not at all impressed. They also have a beer menu (font and back page of an A4 sheet) which offers beers in pints and half pints. Tips : do select a more strategically located table, where you know the wait staff can see you, otherwise forgot about being served. Food comes fairly quickly so that was nice. Also, I went on a Saturday at about 7.30-8pm and stayed till about 10.30pm. When I went, it was crowded but I was still able to find a table - the crowd seem to start at about 8.30pm or so. When we left, there were quite a number of people outside waiting for a table.

For beers though, they have a great selection, including plenty of stouts and American IPAs/APAs. We came as a big group of Yelpers, so I'll give the wait staff a little credit for trying to take all of our orders and not getting mine exactly right (I'll also take into account my poor Portuguese). On the bright side, they actually fixed our order and didn't charge us, so I can't mark them down for that. There is one big projector screen in the back that would be nice to watch sporting events, but I don't think it would be sufficient for everyone in the restaurant to just watch from that screen. Overall though, if you're in the mood for good beer, check this place out.

Honorable mentions: Shredded Beef Rice- was delicious. Rice cooked to perfection and the beef had amazing flavor. Joaquina's picadinho- beef was a salty for my taste but flavors were delicious. Tapioca Shrimp- these were sooo good appetizers. Good size shrimps and the flavors were delicious. Pasteis (shrimp)- delicious! Came with 2 smaller empanada-type pastries. We wanted to order Pork Rinds and Mini Shrimp Burgers but ran out early that day. We ate around 8 pm so go earlier if you want to try. Definitely a great culinary experience.

The drinks were phenomenal. I had a passion fruit caipirinha, and it was fresh, vibrant, and packed with real fruit -- you could see the seeds and citrus in the glass. It was refreshing but also very strong (Rio does not hold back ). If you appreciate a properly made caipirinha with a serious pour, you'll love it. We also tried another cocktail with a beautiful frothy top that was just as impressive -- both drinks were visually stunning and well balanced. For food, since it was my first meal in Brazil, I kept it simple. I ordered a traditional plate with rice, steak in gravy, crispy potatoes, farofa, and a fried egg on top. The flavors were on the milder side, but the portion was generous and extremely filling. It felt comforting and authentic -- a classic Brazilian plate done in a straightforward way.

My fellow Americans! (Obama voice)…read more So you're here in Brazil and realize the food is quite terrible, right? (I know, it's not what you expect when you travel.) Well this is a play-it-safe move for your Yankee tastebuds. Get the filet mignon and a side of rice. Don't even do the one that comes with sides because rice, French fries, and egg farofa is gonna be too much food. And besides, you don't even know what farofa is. I could tell you that it's a type of meal made from toasted cassava, but you don't know what that is either. (It's okay. We're gonna get through this.) Place is stuffier than my nose during the Santa Ana winds, so I wouldn't recommend going there wearing a ton of layers. Th-th-that's all folks! (Porky Pig voice)

It is VERY popular and I'm sure being recommended by Bourdain has a lot to do with it. The first time we tried to eat there the wait was over an hour long. We went sometime after 1AM and there was still a decent wait, maybe close to 30 minutes. The place is pretty small and cramped, but that gives it some charm. Somehow that makes the food taste even better. We ordered a little bit of everything and it was all amazing. Chicken, steak, fries, garlic bread, polenta. It was all cooked and seasoned to perfection. Everything we ordered was delicious Service was fair and prices are reasonable. Do yourself a favor and visit Galeto Sat's!
