On the food we tried Cassava crisp , lord all mighty was this good, great combo w the meat & the cassava. Next the Joaquin's picadinho , really good as well great flavors, great taste to the meat & the shredded rib rice , it was very good nice taste to this dish. We managed to have room left for dessert & had the Tapioca ice cream, another yummm really good & just the right amount of sweetness. This place seems to be very popular, we tried to come back another day but the wait was too long & we just didn't have the time to spare otherwise we would have waited. It's directly across from the beach, so the atmosphere is always alive -- sunshine, music, people walking by, and that effortless Rio energy. It's absolutely a vibe. The drinks were phenomenal. I had a passion fruit caipirinha, and it was fresh, vibrant, and packed with real fruit -- you could see the seeds and citrus in the glass. It was refreshing but also very strong (Rio does not hold back ). If you appreciate a properly made caipirinha with a serious pour, you'll love it. We also tried another cocktail with a beautiful frothy top that was just as impressive -- both drinks were visually stunning and well balanced. For food, since it was my first meal in Brazil, I kept it simple. I ordered a traditional plate with rice, steak in gravy, crispy potatoes, farofa, and a fried egg on top. We went with cousins to Joaquina''s restaurant, which was recommended by our hotel, the Hilton Cococabana. We all had the same thing: bruschetta and then fillet mignon with garlic. This dish is amazing and all of us loved it. The meat was so tender and the side dishes very different and delicious. If you happen to be in Rio de Janeiro, I highly recommend Joaquina's for dinner. The we didn't have a reservation but the wait for a table was about 20-25 minutes. The staff was very friendly. My Portuguese isn't very good but staff was accommodating with me ordering food. I tried the fried rice balls, and another dish that I need to look up the name and update later, my friend had sausage. The food was really delicious. I was full after enjoying the appetizers so didn't get a chance to order an enteee. We did have about three glasses of wine (great pours btw). Our bill was about $80 USD. On our first night in Rio, we stopped by Joaquina for dinner. This Brazilian restaurant was recommended in my Brazil guidebook so we gave things a try! Upon arriving, the restaurant was packed. We waited about 20 minutes before being seated at a table on the patio. Which is exactly what we wanted as the weather was lovely. After ordering a caipirinha, I went with the shrimp risotto. I love risotto so I couldn't pass up on the Italian dish. While the risotto didn't deliver to my full expectations, it was still a solid entree and had a good amount of shrimp. Honestly the best food we had in Brazil. Every dish we ordered here was top notch, with distinct flavors, tender meats and good accompaniments. The only dish that could use a little more work was the sausage which was on the saltier end. The dried meat is definitely a must-try option because of its tenderness and curated flavors. The patio is protected from the elements and from beggars etc (plants surround). the service is very good and although they don't speak much English, they have an English menu and they try hard. Stephany, Victor and Hugor were very helpful to me and others. The food has good flavor and is plenty. I had the carne do sol acebolada and it was quite good. Some pieces were a little chewy, but most were very good. The dessert selection made it hard to choose, but the doce de Leite was really creamy and delicious. This was recommended by our tour guide when we asked for a restaurant that served moqueca (Brazilian non spicy coconut based curry). Even this is a Northern Brazilian specialty my husband said it was the best. He had the mixed seafood and my son had the shrimp. My daughter had a kids special chicken with mashed potatoes and it was a big portion. I had the Blumenau sausage sandwich that was also delicious and tasted like German smoked sausage.
