This was the 2nd establishment in a tour group I was in had gone to in Copacabana. I was part of a food and pub tour where we were going to some of the best local spots around town. Pavão Azul is famously known for their bolinho de bacalhau. It was perfectly crispy fried on the outside and the inside was filled with bacalhau which is otherwise known as cod. Its good on its own, but also very tasty with squeezed lime juice or with the use of the pimenta no azeite which is a chili pepper olive oil that I fell in love with during my entire stay in Brazil and had to have it on everything if it was available where I went. I also tried this drink we had a bottle of to share with the group - I believe it was called coquito which came in an old Smirnoff bottle. It is a milk cream drink - vodka, coconut milk, and condensed milk. I did not think I was going to like it as I don't care for milky or creamy things, but I do like trying new things and I really wanted to embrace everything while I was traveling. I ended up liking it, haha. It was not bad and I would try it again if I had the chance. This place was packed and very busy! We were there on a Thursday night. Being that our tour guide knew the staff, he was able to score a couple tables for our group. I loved the energy and vibe that was there that night - I did not want to leave it was so fun! Awesome bar close to copacabana! It's a few streets off the beach so not as "touristy" as one may think. Great food and reasonably priced. Service was okay, it took forever to flag down a waiter to get a menu and they messed up our initial order. The bolinhos de bacalhau was a tad salty for my liking. I've come to notice in Brazil a lot of the food was salty but still good. The feijoada one was unique but didn't taste the best. I would come back here for sure. read more

Open from noon until midnight daily, Pavāo Azul is a cash-only Bohemian bar popular with locals as well as tourists for cheap Beer and hearty Snacks including Rice dishes and savory Pastries offered at low prices on an outdoor patio. Serving Rio de Janeiro for over sixty years, lengthy waits to be expected during Copacabana's busy season, seats are taken on a first-come-first-serve basis, only one two-top empty at 13h30 as servers hustle to and fro between the Restaurant and a kitchen that seems to be in a building behind it. I've lost count of which stop on our food crawl this was, as the drinks were flowing and we indulged in a few more here. Passion fruit Caipirinha was on point, and we washed down some stewed bean balls. Careful, the local hot sauce here was the hottest that we found! Everything here is super deep fried so forget the diet! Amazing atmosphere. There is a long line up and you have to put your name on a list but you can order beer and food while you wait on the sidewalk with lots of other people waiting and enjoying their beers. Beers are cold, atmosphere is loud and friendly, food is really good. We had the beef and shrimp pastels, the fried balls of cod, and the deep fried chicken. They were all good but the pastels were my favourite by far. Also they have chilli hot sauce at the front counter if you want some with your food. read more

I'm sorry, I can't give this place a better review. I really wanted to like it because I had chosen it instead of the place next door. I said I wanted to try something different. I see a lot of great reviews so maybe his was just an off day. I'm not exactly sure. Like others stated, there were not many tourists at this place, it was filled with locals, which was fine by me. I love to experience local food and fare. This place wasn't good at all!! The first place we ate at while here for 5 days and it just was very sub par! Food was cold, chicken wasn't cooked well. Lacked flavor, the French fries were frozen fries and they were cold and hard, like they had been sitting there a while. The pastelitos (can't remember what they call them in Brazil, but the fried dough patties filled with meat or cheese) came after our food because the guy had to go across the street to get them. The service was terrible as well. They guy didn't ask for our drink orders. I had to get up to go get him to to get water. It wasn't even crowded so I couldn't understand why the service was so terrible. We stopped by this place on our first night in Rio - a quick search yielded positive reviews and it was close to our hotel. The place was absolutely packed at night but we managed to squeeze into a table. This place is fairly basic, with cheap drinks and easy food. Sunday January 8, 2016 around noon. After all the walking and sight seeing we've decided to stop at Pavao Azul. The seating was very limited and waiting was not very long. We end up waiting for about 10 mins to get the table for 4 people. The food and drinks? The first thing we order was the a bottle of Batida com coco came with a small glass with 1 ice. than our driver order us some snack and we just relaxed and talk about life in Rio de Janeiro before we move on to the next bar. The food was decent to me nothing really notable (had the fish balls and pastels.) The best part was the bar portion. The seats and area of the bar is literally outside on the sidewalks. Cheap drinks, ton of locals, lively ambience, and the owner has a specialty drink. The drink is like an looser egg nog, dont drink too much they are loaded with alcohol. read more

This gritty Copacabana boteco is known for the pataniscas de bacalhau, codfish fritters, and they are worth the trip! Pair it with a super cold Original beer and Pavão has you covered for that late afternoon beer and snack. For my Sunday lunch, I ordered the thin steak with onions, a side of rice and beans. The beef was overcooked and the onions were few and far between. While I wouldn't likely order this again, I'd certainly return for the fritters. On Fridays, they also offer freshly made feijoada which I'm sure is tasty. Don't be confused by the Pavão Azul on both corners. It's the same operation, just separate buildings. One is slightly more clean, but only slightly. read more

3 stars for the ambiance and lively area however the food didn't live up to expectation. We had the shrimp risotto which wasn't risotto at all just rice and the fish croquettes which weren't amazing and had bones in them. I realize that if I spoke Portuguese and was local my review would probably be much different however that's not the case. Staff didn't speak English and even messed up our order after pointing to the dishes we wanted. All in all, if you speak Portuguese and/or are from a Brazilian background this might be an awesome experience for you but not for this tourist :( . read more

LOVED this restaurant. It was definitely the most authentic dining experience I had in Rio. I think we were the only tourists there. The waiters didn't speak English but we just pointed and tried some Portuguese and did fine. Kinda hard flagging down waiters but we managed. We ordered a bunch of snacks and my favorite was definitely the carne pastels. We ordered seconds of those. The beers were very cold and stored in styrofoam containers. It was completely packed when we were there on a Saturday early night. We hovered and managed to grab a table. Other people were standing around stools on the street. We shared a few beers and some coconut vodka shots. Our bill came out to about 90 relais or $15 USD/person. read more

The food is nothing special here, but Pavao Azul seems to have developed a large and loyal following. On just about any weeknight you can come out to Pavao Azul and it will be packed with locals enjoying a drink or having some food. Again, I don't think the food is anything worth writing home about, but the liveliness is 4 star worthy alone. To any fellow gringo's staying in Copacabana, come check out this spot for a beer on a weeknight. You won't be disappointed. read more

A lively atmosphere is about the only good thing I say about this place. Otherwise it's no different than any other boteco in this city. The food is no better nor worse. The choppe is not colder than all the other bars. Service is super slow when it's busy as was the case when I visited. I would say this place is not worth putting any effort into going to but if you live around the corner it's prolly your local spot. read more

I've been here so many times and never had anything that I didn't like. Their octopus rice, served on weekends, is to die for, along with the traditional pataniscas. They also make an amazing "escondidinho" and black beans soup. I always recommend it to people from out of town. read more
