My wife and I attempted to contact MAC via email about leasing an apartment, and after several emails never received a response. After viewing other apartments in Hyde Park-managed by other companies-we decided to just walk into the actual MAC office on 53rd to inquire about an apartment. The receptionist was quite courteous, apologizing for their lack of response to our original inquiry over email. She promptly scheduled us a series of apartment viewings (for that same day!) and a new hire named Ryan showed us some apartments. To put it simply, Ryan was a new employee, but he was a perfect example of what customer service should look like. If he did not know something, he would promptly respond that he was unsure; however, he would immediately contact someone in the 'know-how' to acquire the appropriate information. Ryan drove us around for four hours looking at apartments. We were so impressed with his helpfulness that we signed a lease for an apartment that day! Everything (as far as preliminary paperwork was concerned) was taken care of, and we had a little over a month before the move in date. Then the trouble began.
Upon signing all of the move-in agreements, we were told that our apartment only had one set of keys, but that MAC would cut a second set of new keys for us ASAP. I was told that they LOST the second set. This was on a Sunday. I told them no worries, we were moving stuff in, but I had to leave town Thursday for a wedding, and I needed that second set for my wife. I was told this was no problem, I would receive keys Mon/Tues, they would contact me. I wait Monday...no phone call; Tuesday, same story. I go to the office on Wed. and my keys aren't ready yet; I give the whole spiel about how I need them--and was promised them--before Thursday. I left my number and was told I would get a call in a few hours. I return to the office (nobody ever called) and my keys just arrived. I return to my apartment, and my front door key didn't work! Perplexed, I ran back to the office. Some lady, who I had not dealt with before, got really nasty when I told her my plight. Her first response: "Why do you need a second set anyway?" Really? Maybe because its on my !$$@%@ lease agreement. Don't try to cover up for YOUR companies incompetence with snide comments. After a somewhat heated exchange, she said that my apartment was close to maintenance, and that a technician could assist me.
The technician arrives, and punches the exact same key as before...as in, the one that didn't work. He then tells me that he thinks the 'lock is messed up.' If the lock is messed up, why does my good key turn in the lock like butter? I tell him he could just take my good key, and we could duplicate that, because perhaps MAC has the wrong master key on file. The technician tells me he will send another guy out, and that it could be as late as ten pm, but he would come. I said ok and thank you. I waited...NOBODY EVER CAME. I then had to run my keys over to a friend, who would be cat sitting for me, and I left Chicago at 4:30 am on Thursday with no key.
I am gone for two weeks, my wife receives an email from MAC inquiring about the key situation. She responds back describing the situation.. AND RECEIVES NO REPLY. We returned to Chicago, officially in this apartment for three weeks today, and still do not have a second set of keys. I went to the office yesterday, and was told to call the maintenance number. I call and explain this ordeal, and they tell me they can't complete my request until Monday.
While seemingly a small ordeal, this situation has larger implications. Firstly, my wife and I always have to time our schedules together just to return home together, wasting hours of time. Secondly, if MAC cannot even copy a simple key in a three week time span, what if I had a more serious issue? Thirdly, customer service. YOU ARE AN APARTMENT MANAGEMENT COMPANY. Your business IS customer service--"the customer is always right," as we say in the business. I have done PR and have been a manager, never accuse the customer of being wrong even if they are an idiot. Fourthly, this was on my lease agreement, a legally binding contract (which by the way, was never electronically sent to my email, as promised). If you don't have to fulfill this portion of the lease, what else can you get away with not doing?
I honestly hated to write this review, because MAC clearly has some wonderful employees, such as Ryan, Arifa, and the secretarial staff. We also really like our apartment--the price, location, its contents and the like. Unlike other reviewers, we seem to have stellar apartment unit--they gave us a great deal. However, people really need to know the incompetence of this company, and be cautious in dealing with them.
P.S. Said they would come Monday-never showed. Went to the office; they put a work order in for 8 am Tuesday. Tuesday, never showed. Wed. they come change the lock. STILL NO SECOND KEY. read more
