If I could give these guys negative stars I would. My wife and I have lived in the building for 2 months and already the washer and dryer in the basement have been vandalized twice. Not even a full 3 weeks a part. Both times the incidents kept me from washing cloths on the weekend. I work in the suburbs and the weekend is really the only time I have to wash. My wife would probably wash in the basement, but because the place has been broken into twice I told her not to. So here I am on a weekend not able to wash my daughters cloths and our cloths. While I'm here let's talking about the door locks on the front door of the building, that you have to fight with to get into the building. A place that has had the washing machines and dryers vandalized twice should have locks that work properly with the keys! Let us not forget the mouse that we reported, that didn't get fixed until I opened a second ticket, where I informed them of where I saw the mouse run through. Nah they didn't call a professional to look at it, they got the maintenance guy. He went all though my apartment and couldn't see that hole in the kitchen. I could probably go on and on, but I hope you realized that all of this has transpired in 2 months time. read more

Terrible! The management resorts to threats- treats U of C students as easy targets for managerial bullying. I experience this with regard to - A check THEY lost, made me pay a 75 $ late fee (FOR 1 DAY late rent) .... turns out 3 days later they found my check, oh joy. - Electricity went out 9-10 times a week and no two electronic devices (blow dryer, vacuum, electric kettle, microwave) could be switched on together. - Management and maintenance alike like to believe that they can slam on your doors for their inane unnecessary questions. - Management would threaten to make us pay for basic maintenance of electricity/plumbing - insinuating that we were doing some thing wrong with it. UMM.. how many ways of turning the tap on are there? - Maintenance is ruuuude ... only beaten in comparison by the management. read more

MAC Property Management has been awful to our apartment. I thought it would be alright at first, but after living in an apartment with them for a while it's become clear that when things aren't broken, everything's ok, but the second you need them to do their job, don't expect anything. Here is a short list of things they have done, in chronological order: 1. At our first MAC appointment, we met with a leasing representative to discuss potential apartment locations. We chose a couple and scheduled an apartment visiting appointment. At that appointment, he informed us the meeting was to confirm the places we were interested in (which we did the last time), and that we would have to visit them next week. It soon became clear the apartments he wanted to show us were occupied and he had simply forgotten to contact the residents about showing us around. 2. In one of the apartments we toured, our representative attempted to sweep a dead mouse into a closet so that we wouldn't see it. It was pretty obvious. 3. Leased us the wrong apartment. The representative offered us a lease for an apartment down the block from the one we had agreed on. Admittedly, it was the same layout, but come on dude. 4. At least one closet light did not work at the start of the lease, and several burned out shortly thereafter. Some of the lights are unfortunately set up so that they require a technician to come in and fix them, which they never got around to doing. 5. Toilet stopped flushing properly for a period of time. MAC replaced it for free, but took several weeks to do so. 6. MAC has waited until freezing temperatures to turn on heat in our building for two years in a row now. 7. MAC has promised to fix our water boiler, which was needed to heat our building during the winter, and then spent a month "ordering parts" and claiming to have fixed the issue when nothing had been done. This is straight up illegal. They supplied us with electric heaters, which were not nearly sufficient to heat up the apartment and leave us with the electricity bill! 8. MAC has repeatedly failed to maintain our building's laundry room. For the last two months, the machines have been failing one after another. As of a month ago, none of the machines work. MAC representatives have repeatedly stonewalled any attempt to get a timeline of repairs, and have informed residents that they cannot be held legally responsible for maintaining the property. The washing machines are currently flooded with brown water, leaving the machines and area unsanitary. 9. MAC did not notify us when they were doing cleaning on our porch, leading them to accidentally throw away hundreds of dollars of furniture kept out there during the summer. 10. MAC has repeatedly made mistakes on its leasing contracts, including marking our apartment as responsible for paying for heating services when it is in fact their responsibility. Don't use MAC. If I could give 0 stars I would. I apologize for the long review but I have to get this out. Do not rent from this company!!! Period! You will regret it. I am at my wits end. After being a resident for a year and a half they are suing me for eviction because I fell behind on my rent because of a bed bug infestation that wiped me out financially, and my gas bill that totalled 600 dollars. I got a disconnect notice so I chose to pay and be somwehat warm. I am a single mother with three children. So, you can only imagine how much it cost me to wash my clothes and sheets, etc. For weeks in there expensive half way functioning washers and dryers. I do not know where to begin. I am a current resident in one of there buildings. I only blame myself because I read the reviews. First, the leasing agent lied about the area that my apartment is in. Thought it was hyde park but turns out it is Kenwood. High crime to say the least. He also never informed me that I would be paying a separate heating bill. Which in part led me to write this review. My heating bill has been enormous because my apartMent has bad windows. I have been fighting with them for a year and a half now about not just the windows, but multiple issues. 1)toiilet had been broken for over a year.basically since I moved in. It over flowed three times on to my carpet. Just gross! Plunging was a normal. They sent someone to fix it 5 or 6 times before they finally decided to replace it. All my windows are basically broken and need to be replaced. They have sent at least 7 people to look at my windows and they still are not fixed. It is so bad that they have duct tape on several of them to hold them together. Mind you I was not aware of this because I did not inspect the windows before I moved in. When I asked about them being fixed last summer. A kind lady stated to me that they where not going to replace my windows because if they did everyone in the building would want them. Huh? I blame myself. But I did not give up. Now about a 2 months ago I was informed via email. By one if the many random people that they have working there. That they were ordering new windows and it would take a month for me to get them. All lies! One day about 3 weeks ago a man knocks on my door no prior notice saying we had to leave for five hours so he could install new windows. I told him I would call the office to reschedule. I did, mind you it was about 3 weeks later, but I work from home and homeschool. So arrangements had to be made. I called and asked if they could install them Saturday. A person names Robert called me back to confirm. The person who came on Saturday was clueless. The seventh person they sent to measure the windows. Measure? Why!! They were supposed have been ordered months ago. Lies! 2) There is more, rodents shitting on the back porch. 3) light is broken on my back porch4) pipe in the wall that has been fixed 4 times is showing signs that something is not right. But, they keep telling me it's fine. 5) Ceiling had been leaking brown substance for a month. I was informed that the brown stuff was dirt and smoke from my incense. Whew! So after all of this they are suing me. Go figure! No compassion. I asked if I could work out a payment plan. They told me no. After putting up with there shit for a year and a half. Not only are they suing for rent, but court cost as well. In order to stay. I have become sickly and extremely thin because of all of this. I am having to borrow money. So, that I will not have an eviction on my record, then no one will touch me. I am sure they would like that because they are evil. If it was that simple I would move, but I am still in a lease for another 11 months. I do not know what to do because I am under an enormous amount of stress. I wrote this review in hopes that other people would read this and decide to look elsewhere. Finally, I was told by several of the maintenance staff that they discriminate against color people and that is the reason why the building is not well maintained. Because people of color is what predominantly lives in my building they could care less. It makes perfect sense. If there is anyone out there going through this, there is hope. In the end I won the case . So do not give up! read more

This is my first review on yelp. Only because the terrible service from regents park!!!! DO NOT MOVE IN!! THE STAFF IS SUPER RUDE AND HELPLESS!! I would give zero if I could. Every time I go to the resident service room and try to get an solution for my problem, the staff always tried to tell me it it absolutely not their fault instead of helping me solve any of my issues. They also tried to enter my apartment without any notice for property inspection at one time. This is unacceptable. I complain this to the leasing office with no furture response!!!! Woodlawn Terrace--If I could give this place ZERO STARS I would. If you want burglaries in a building that is supposed to be secure with security cameras that do not work, then this is the place for you. They also assume many tenants are not home during the day because during the winter months, they only run the radiator from 10pm-5am. If you want to freeze and run the gas stove for heat, which you have to pay, then this is your place. I remember coming home after being gone for two days in January and it was so cold I couldn't even take off my coat. Maintenance said the radiators come on when the temp gets to a certain point, but that's a lie. I befriended another maintenance person who told me otherwise. I have a high gas bill because of this issue. When it's hot in the summer months, the power constantly shuts off and you have to wait forever for them to cut it back on. You can run anything with the air conditioner. My power shuts off at least 15 times during the summer months. I left for work and told management my power was off. After 12 hours, they had not cut it back on. Meaning fridge off all day in 95 degree weather. They finally sent maintenance to cut it bac k on, but I had alreadly left to stay at a friends house. The roof constantly leaks. Instead of fixing the molded drywall, they simply paint over it for a quick fix. The rodents are absolutely ridiculous. The exterminators do absolutely nothing when they come. They spray in one or two spots and that's it. The exterminator told me the management tells them only do the one spot where the rodent was seen. Shouldn't you do the entire apartment to eliminate error? Tenants have busted the windows and doors on the property. The staff is nice until you sign the lease. STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!!! There are other properties in Hyde Park that are great to work with. read more

Mac Property can do a better job at the way they treat their tenants. When something goes wrong or needs fixing, they have an attitude of "I don't care" and they'll take forever to fix it. They also increase their rent every year without making any improvements to the property or adding extra benefits to their tenants. These "renovations" they make to older buildings and the new "luxury" building they're putting up are far from done correctly. They hire less than capable workers to install Ikea products that fall apart within no time. There has been an incredible amount of water damage in a matter of 6 months and all they do is cover it up with paint so the issue is not really resolved. The Staff is incredibly rude and have no sense of customer service. They have no values here. Yes they do own most of the decent properties in Hyde Park so you may feel that you have no where else to go, however there are many individual condo owners that are renting as well as a new building opening called "The Everette" located at 55th and Everette. This property company seems to have their stuff together and have set values on true resident success. The only reason I gave two stars is because I know the staff at Regents is very nice. read more

So an update. After they sent my name to rent recovery, they had my credit marked, because they wanted the last month of rent after I moved out. Essentially a lease buy out. So any student who is thinking of renting with this company beware if you do not like being robbed and neglected by them you will have to deal with them playing dirty. Like ruining your credit. Good luck getting student loans with these guys destroying your opportunities. When I last spoke with a Mac representative I asked her if she even cared about the neighbor who exposed himself to me, on the back porch and the homeless guy who was living under the stairs, and what would happened if someone got raped or robbed outside of their apartment. Her reply, "Miss it's not our responsibility what happens outside of the apartment." My problem wasn't what happened down the street, it was right outside my door that bothered me. And apparently she doesn't care. When I told her I was going to let people know about my experience she said "Well I hope you know that's slander." The good thing about slander is that it's has to be a lie. Check my records with the city, with the police and with Mac. I had plenty of complaints, written. It seems to me that some people have had great experiences with them. But it doesn't seem to be happening regularly. Maybe they take better care of some of their residents. @ Greg G. Or are you implying that I had great help in finding the apartment? No I saw the listing on Craigslist and was never able to go out to see it. I lived half way across the country, and was working/going to school. So yeah, I guess you are now about as helpful as my building manager was when I rented with Mac. And obviously I would have made a horrible fit in the building because, I do not steal peoples mail, expose myself to others, beat my partner publicly, smoke crack/pot, or drink forties. At first I was thrilled to go apt hunting and wasnt sure what to expect in Hyde Park. The apts at MAC are not cleaned during the tour (REALLY ? SMH). Anyway but my agent Jenny explained that it would be cleaned before move in and that wasnt cool with me because im not a visual person. My agent took me to places that I didnt like and didnt show me apts based on my preference. I actually rented an apt from the building manager with whom I felt comfortable with. I told my agent that I wasn't satisfied and she didn't take my criticism too well. You can see the attitude on her face and hear her arrogant tone as she shunned me off. I thought it was convenient to ride in her car but not to be rude the oral hygiene wasnt pleasant along with a nasty attitude. The apt I leased is great but if it hadn't been for the building manager I wouldn't be here. My apartment is small and nice. The noise from the alley is louder than I'd like, but other than that we are very comfortable. The community is very quiet, so I don't see my neighbors much, but that makes a good change from dorm life :) love being so close to hpp! Rent/utilities are a little high, but I do appreciate the convenience of the easy access to Mac either online or by phone, so far haven't had a problem read more

Mac Property Management now owns a large portion of the apartments available in Hyde Park, which makes them a bit of target online. That said, they seem to be one of the few companies around here that is investing in the properties they own--and anyone who has looked around Hyde Park for apartments knows that the area could use a great deal more of that. I have only had positive interactions with leasing agents at Mac Properties and with my apartment management for the last two years. Mac apartments may be slightly more expensive than some of the places you can find through individual landlords, but Mac makes it easy to create a list of places you want to check out. read more

Shoreland is a nice apartment. Very new HOUSEHOLD ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE. Security of the apartment is very good. The reception makes packages delivery very convenient. Only problem is the short of parking spots in the garage. read more

I've lived in Regents Park for just under 2 years and I love it. To be honest the leasing staff leaves a bit to be desired, and you are definitely working with a big firm that has lots of rules, but the building and its staff are fantastic. It is more expensive than most of Hyde park, but in my opinion you get what you pay for. I love the gym, the pool, the store in the basement ( which I use way too much), and the facility staff is absolutely fantastic! They are always quick to reply and fix things. Overall I would highly recommend Regents park. If you can jump through all of Mac's hoops, their properties are really great! read more

I've lived in a Mac apartment for about a year and things have been really great. Granted, my apartment was recently refurbished (and it looks great) but I've not faced any difficulties. If I've had to file work orders, things get done quickly (the longest I've waited was for 2 days to change the battery of my thermostat) and it is almost immediate if you need urgent repairs. My only grouse was that it took them a while (2 days) to clear the snow after the recent blizzard. Other than that, the building is safe, clean and well maintained. It is also really convenient to pay my rent online and the service from Mac (especially from my building manager) has been exceptional. I'm going to renew my rental contract with Mac when it is up and I guess it is a reflection of how pleased I am with my apartment. read more

MAC is redlining (Redlining is the practice of denying, or increasing the cost of services) life long Hyde Park residents. Rents are high and some buildings are vintage, some rehabbed yes, but nevertheless high. This is unfair and something should be done about it. read more

As my first renting experience, MAC apartments has allowed me to discover what I need to keep in mind when looking for an apartment in the future. First of all, the good. My current apartment is in an excellent location in Hyde Park. The laundry room is just down the stairs and at $1.00 for a wash and $0.75 for a dry, the pricing is better that even some other MAC apartments which I have been told can be as high as $1.50 for both. Any maintenance requests are handled promptly and effectively, and the maintenance staff have all had a positive attitude. The customer service MAC provides is direct, but if they are approached with a kind attitude and not an accusatory one, they can be very helpful if help is possible. Heating in the apartment was turned on before it started getting really cold if I remember correctly, and MAC gives plenty of notice on maintenance projects for the building if they need to say paint the laundry room. Now the bad. The construction of my building is not the best in the world, in my room alone the floors slope up in one corner by a ridiculous amount. Literally, I can put my desk chair in that corner and ride it down the floor like a slide. I'm pretty sure maintenance can't fix that. Second, while with most landlords a deposit is paid at the beginning of the lease that is returned following the end of the lease as long as nothing needs to be repaired, MAC takes a "Move-in Fee" and "Sign-up fee" that is never returned. And while this fee is much less than most deposits, it is still a large enough quantity to bode complaint. As I recently found out, my rent is increasing next year by a little more than $20. Not to much, but from a year long standpoint, that's an extra $240 or so my apartment mates and I have to pay extra. The cabinets in our apartment were not put together very well and some of the doors fallen off because they would hit each other if a few of them were open. Finally, MAC is not the most lenient of landlords when it comes to financial dealings, but there are some instances where they will give you a warning and a slap on the wrist. Finally, the apartment I'm currently living in does not have any high speed telephone lines, making internet connections faster than 3MB/sec impossible. MAC is only required to give each apartment one working phone line, but why does it have to be in the bedroom and not the kitchen? In conclusion, MAC apartments has taught me valuable lessons about what to look for in a landlord, but one thing is for certain, this is far from the worst apartment experience and that is why MAC Property Management receives three stars. Just remember, if you do rent from MAC approaching them in the right way can make a huge difference. read more

WARNING!!! There is always something new with MAC. (This post supports up the post from Allyson C. on 7/1/14). When I was shown my current apartment, the MAC agent explained the incentives, such as a $30 cap on my gas bill. This was so appealing to know I'd never pay more than $30 for gas, with the kind of winters we have in Chicago. I learned last month, that I actually pay the cooking gas separately and the $30 cap only covers the heating of my unit. So, here we go with games. A few days ago, I get a bill from MAC for another "gas" charge. I called and was told that although they are not heating my unit in the summer of course, this gas charge is also to provide the hot water in my apartment. So, since it was under the $30, I have to pay as agreed. In all my rental experiences, I've NEVER heard of a tenant paying to heat their water in an apartment. I asked a few people and they are just as bewildered. It's a 266ft studio, not a full apartment, condo or house, I'm renting. Sheesh. Shame on me for not knowing or investigating the fine, finer print of my lease. But like, seriously, paying for hot water? STAY away from these people!!! read more

My experience with Mac Properties has been fairly acceptable. Most issues I've had have with my unit have either been resolve through maintenance calls, or bad neighbors moving out. My only issue with my unit has been the lack of street parking which I'm resolving by moving to another Mac Property that has on-site parking. read more

The rent is egregiously high compared to the space and location (The Sutherland). Even with inflation, these prices are exorbitant compared to "market value and pricing trends." I'm trying to look at apartments and I've found the experience thus far frustrating. They only allow you to work with one leasing consultant to see the properties. I am interested in seeing multiple mac properties throughout Hyde Park, but I can only work with one consultant, so I have to limit what I want to see see because she is only one person... I have to wait for her to be available because she has to spread her time among many customers. Other properties in Hyde Park have about 2-3 leasing consultants per building, but MAC only has about 10 and those 10 have to service all 93 buildings! I tried calling to see if I could meet with a different leasing consultant to show me a property but they all tell me with attitude that I need to work with the same consultant I'm already seeing and they refuse to answer my questions over the phone... I can't even view any apartments because my leasing consultant is so busy! And they ignore emails and phone calls. I won't be renting with MAC due to this, it says a lot about the company and how they run their buildings... read more

The only reason why I'm even giving 1 star is because our apartment was new and nicely designed but the management was terrible. MAC charged us every month or gas (around $60) claiming this was for the stove. We also paid the gas company though. When we realized what was happening MAC denied it and stuck with their story that this fee was just for the stove. It wasn't until we spoke with other neighbors and found out this way happening to them as well and they had been refunded the fees because infact we were correct. It took 3 months before MAC would resolve this issue for us. After doing an annual credit check for myself, I see that MAC conducted 3 hard inquiries into my credit history, March 30, 31 and April 1. This is so frustrating to see. The employees are incompetent and the business is scamming people everyday. BEWARE!! read more

Jasmine Perkins, one of Mac Properties resident managers is insanely incompetent. I spoke to her on the phone about the laundry units in our building, which were left un-repaired for an ENTIRE YEAR, and she did absolutely nothing to help the situation. I brought up in an e-mail that the broken laundry machines that filled up with water half-way through the cycle were health code violations, but never got a response on this matter, which is negligence on behalf of Mac management to adequately sustain the amenities that their residents pay for. I suggest that Ms. Perkins begins working towards solving the very real issues that tenants face. read more

I noticed a lot of bad reviews here, but I had a pretty good experience with Mac Properties. I couldn't decide whether to rate Mac Properties a 3 or a 4 star, so here are the details of my experience: I rented a studio on 53rd Street (Ellis Court building) and despite the unit being old, the layout is beautiful and there is tons of light. The residents in the building are very quiet. Maintenance fixes any problems quickly, with one important exception: my oven did not work for two months when I first moved in, and every time they claimed to have fixed it, I still could not turn it on. I kept thinking I was not turning the oven on correctly (it is a gas oven), but it turned out the gas line was plugged which made it extremely hard for the flame to light. Unfortunately, they did not agree to give me some compensation for this issue when I asked for it. The lady at the resident office is extremely kind - she always remembers my name when I go to pick up a mail package. Overall, the company seems organized and readily available to talk to. The buildings are a bit old, but that's to be expected in this area. I have never had any bugs despite keeping all of my windows (they have screens) open for many months of the year. read more
