I renewed my lease just this week even though we have considerably LESS service than before. We no longer have wifi included AND it has been 7 weeks since I was able to do laundry in the building. This is the crazy part, my rent increase was almost a $100 dollars, and no one even bothered to give me a courtesy call to thank me for my business or ask me if I was satisfied. This is extremely different than my prior experience with rental companies. Even a form letter or email would have been a sign of respect or appreciation. Just because an apartment is in a great location doesn't mean you should take your residents for granted. read more

Mac Property has been a nightmare. We moved in June 1st. July our locks stopped working and without warning they changed them and expected us to make it in by close to pick up the key even though we work late into the evening. so we were locked out. We were not let in that night until 11:45 pm and had to call the next morning so we didn't get charged 100 for lock out fees. Shortly after that we got burglarized. They offered us one place to move into, though free of charge, it was crappy. We stayed were we were and got burglarized by the same people again. We informed mac that it was someone with a key and that we don't feel safe and they refused to acknowledge it. I saw the boxes to my stuff in the trash confirming someone using a key did it. They would not let us break our lease and said we had to move into a place they managed. we found one, the rent is substantully higher but decided to pay for a piece of mind at least and now they won't honor the move in deal under our lease terms even though the regional manager said she would prior to us finding the place. There customer service is horrible and i work in customer service so i know what it should be. They are only out for a profit and don't genuinly care about their tenants. RUN!! read more

I cannot emphasize how terrible Mac Apartments is in almost every regard. It consistently squeezes every penny possible out of you for the dumbest of reasons. After draining your wallet, it drains your mental energy with ridiculous policies. Stay away like the plague. read more

I just moved into a Mac Property, so this is only a first impression, but so far my experience has been great. Signing the lease, payments, and move-in was really easy. Today I was having a key pass-down apartment issue, and Ruth H. helped me out right away. If all of my interactions with Mac are like today with Ruth I'd be the happiest tenant ever. The lady at the front desk at the Shoreland office was also so friendly and helpful. read more

Do not use this company. If you have ANY other options, regardless of how desperate that option might be, I would recommend living there over a Mac Apartment. I am coming to the end of my lease at 5053 S Ellis and it has been a disaster every step of the way. In the 1 year I have lived here, I have experienced: -7-10 times the toilet has stopped working. Not gotten clogged, not overflowed, just not working. Takes an average of 2 days to fix each time -unbelievably high supplemental utility bills (in addition to the money we pay to People's Gas each month, Mac bills us at least $100 per month and sometimes way more) -2-3 times Mac claimed they had come to fix the bathroom and had not -For most of this past year, the outermost gate next to the street has not closed properly, decreasing security In addition to these problems, MAC's customer service and general treatment of customers is also bottom of the barrel (often times phones ring 15-20 times when you call, the first person you speak to can never help you out, different people tell you conflicting information, etc). They are not well trained and clearly read from a script when answering resident calls. All in all, this past year was way more trouble than it was worth. I would be willing to try any other landlord in Chicago before I came back to Mac. read more

My move into one of the MAC properties have been nothing short of amazing. I must shout out my on-site leasing agent after moving in, Danielle Lock! She has been so professional and quick to respond to my needs and inquiries. She made sure everything was lined up administratively for a smooth move-in and called in to check to see how I was doing with my move-in. Daniel Jones has been incredible too on the apartment search, application side. She has been so open to respond to me via text or call at anytime over any and all concerns I have had during this process, going above and beyond from tour to application approval. I have yet to meet such a great team of leasing professionals and am so grateful! Thank you! read more

I'm still living here on their E 54th St building in Hyde Park and can't wait to get out of here. Their sales agent that showed us the apartment gave us an option to end the lease early because we are students traveling from place to place and he even put it in writing, but when we went to the main Mac Properties office to break the lease they told us that the sales agent should not have told us this information because it is inaccurate and they cannot help us. Luckily we were able to work something out with them but it was a mess. Also, their laundry equipment was probably fully functional only about 30% of the time I lived here. Parking is very limited in this property, so I park 2 blocks away and pay $180/month just for parking. It's not convenient when weather gets to freezing temperatures with wild winds. Other than that, some minor complaints are that the floors are always creaking, radiator heater is not always on for use (they control it based on municipal standards), the building entrance doors would not lock or even latch closed and they would slam shut every time people walked in and out of the building before they were fixed just recently, I'm pretty sure I can hear ghosts walking in the apartment above me all through the night, one of the showers is completely tiny, and the door handles in the apartment get jammed in certain positions that don't allow for proper door closing. read more

DO NOT SIGN A LEASE WITH MAC APARTMENTS!!!! Our lease is up March 1st, and I can not wait to get out. Anytime I called management, they have not gotten back to me. I have called, multiple emails and no response. They don't care, they only care you pay rent. We schedule work orders, we make arrangements so our dog will not be here, and then NO CALL, NO SHOW MULTIPLE TIMES. We have had a dishwasher with standing MOLDY water for months. Tonight the guy came for our radiator and not the dishwasher. There is always a bull crap excuse why something didn't happen. The problem is VERY POOR MANAGEMENT. We pay a lot of money to live here, and its a crap chute. Do your research. read more

After an extremely negative apartment hunting experience, we decided last minute not to rent from MAC. Throughout the search process, our agent was continually evasive and vague about what fees (e.g. heating) we would have to pay. On our first meeting, we made a shortlist of apartments we were particularly interested in, but on subsequent meetings our agent didn't remember any of what we wanted or what units we wanted to look at, spending at least half an hour repeating that process. After we actually visited the apartments, the agent created a sense of urgency and ushered us into a room pressuring us into signing the lease at that very moment. Despite it being a common courtesy with most landlords to hold apartments until signing the lease, our agent informed us that we would have to pay a non-refundable admin fee of $550 in order to could keep the apartment off the market for a whopping four days (it was a Sunday, and she could hold it until Thursday). If we didn't pay this fee, we were told, we were liable to lose the apartment even within a few hours! Hearing this, we (foolishly) agreed to pay this fee despite not feeling ready to make a decision, in fear of losing it while we made up our minds. Upon our pens touching the paper, the agent nonchalantly mentioned that the actual total was $700, not $550, including the application fee. After this, we left the office and did not receive a response for three days, during which time we had no idea if we had been charged, if the apartment had been held, or where we were in the process. Apparently things weren't so urgent after all. We finally received a response on Wednesday, at which point we had a change of heart. If this is how well MAC treats people they're trying to sell to, I don't want to find out how they'd treat us if we were locked in. In sum, MAC suffers from disorganization, and treats its customers to blatant misinformation, shady sales tactics, and predatory practices designed to exploit first-time renters. read more

Our experience did not start out bad with Mac Properties, but it only got worse. Our unit at the Del Prado was NOT INSULATED, though they wouldn't believe me. We paid hundreds and hundreds in heating costs due to this for years until they finally partially fixed it. Our unit was 50 degrees one day and they brought up a space heater... Not only that but the walls were so thin, I got woken up weekly at all hours of the night. We had brown water coming out of our sink and smoke in the hallways they did nothing about either. So we had to move out because of many health concerns. Mac did nothing to work with us and after years of being positive tenants they demonstrated they only care about the money. The only thing I miss are some of the really nice staff. read more

I've lived in a property managed by MAC since November 2015 (near E. Hyde Park Blvd & Drexel). I like my apartment and I've had positive interactions with the maintenance staff. However I've had an increasing number of serious issues with MAC Properties' management personnel. I recommend avoiding this company. Below is a list of the issues, in order from oldest to newest, that I've encountered. 1. Poor communication and much confusion about utility bills. For 8 months my bill was capped at $30/mo. After that, my bill sporadically jumped ($36, $99, $136, $157). 2. June 2017 there was a fire in the building. I was never notified. MAC says they called me, but since I work I can't always pick up my cellphone. They left no voice message. No email. Nothing. I came home on a Friday afternoon and my apartment was flooded and filled with smoke (the unit on fire was directly above mine and the water used to put out the fire ran down into my unit). What happened next was also outrageous but I'm trying to keep my review a reasonable length. 4. It took MAC an additional two months to make proper repairs. Primarily, the ceiling fan in my bedroom (where most of the water damage occurred) was making airplane noises for the first time since I'd lived there and I refused to turn it on because water + electricity = ???. To get everything straightened out involved me withholding a portion of my rent and getting a lawyer. 5. There was a period soon after that when someone from MAC would enter my apartment and leave no notes. I'd come home and my doors would be locked differently than I left them. I am the only person with a key to my apartment and I only lock the bottom lock. I'd come home and both locks would be locked. I'm still not sure why this was happening. 6. Unclear (and this time, possibly illegal) utility bill calculations. For my building, utilities are calculated based on the entire building's usage, then portions of the total bill are allocated to each resident based on square footage. An Illinois statue (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=2208&ChapterID=62) says landlords can't demand payment when bills are calculated this way without providing a formula for the bill. I received the formula over a year ago because of my previous questions about my utility bill. In October 2017, the formula I was given no longer produced the same output as the utility bill I received. For months I asked both MAC and the utility company for an explanation, they just sent me the same formula I already had. I still don't have an resolution to this issue. At this point, they may very well be pulling numbers out of a hat and expecting me to pay that amount. My relationship with MAC Properties has been deteriorating for a while now. I've been in contact with Veronica Markham about all of the issues above and I cringe every time I'm directed by MAC staff to have another interaction with her. She's passive aggressive, unhelpful, and does not care about your concerns as a resident. My lease ends in July and I'm going to another apartment. I wish I'd paid closer attention to the negative reviews I'd read before I began renting with MAC. At the time I was under the impression that they were turning over a new leaf. But I'm sad to say that after nearly three years, the negative impressions of this management company still hold true. read more

I've been at a building owned by Mac for 3 years in Hyde park. I will say, I feel safe And maintenance is very responsive but I've dealt with a clogged bathroom on and off since I've been here. The buildings are not well maintained and the rent continues to increase, even in a pandemic. I've reported this issue at least 6 times but it's never been resolved. Instead of fixing the issues, they continue to put a bandaid on it. I will not be renewing my lease, the rent and buildings aren't worth it. read more

I finally made a Yelp account and it's to post this novel of a review. There's a reason the MAC Properties Facebook page doesn't allow you to post reviews and this is why. I lived in MAC apartments for three years and it was an absolute nightmare from beginning to end. Their management is a complete joke - never answers calls, doesn't deal with issues in the apartment, rips you off with "fees" every single chance they get. The woman who was helping us find our apartment initially was completely unprofessional and unhelpful (her name was Annette, in case you're being connected to an agent). She was super late to all of our appointments, which was really unnacceptable because my roommates and I were all students with pretty rigid schedules. She would disappear in the middle of showing us around an apartment, never answered her calls, would "forget" to tell us about hundreds of dollars of fees right up until we were signing the lease. We each had to pay a $500 non-refundable move-in fee that she didn't mention until the last minute, when "the apartment was about to be handed to another potential tenant." Their maintenance is also a complete joke. The buildings are hella old and riddled with issues. We got bedbugs in our apartment and it took pest control 4 visits to actually confirm it was real - even though we had literal bedbugs we had collected for them. We essentially had to evacuate the apartment because the bedbugs were such an issue (for reference, it was 5411 S Ellis Ave, apartment #2W). When we were moving out, MAC was bringing around potential tenants. Each time, I would tell the visitors about the bedbugs and mice. To this day, MAC hasn't been able to lease that apartment out. Both of the MAC apartments I lived in were infested with mice and there was nothing that maintenance would do to handle it. And I mean *infested*. Constantly running around our kitchen, poop all over the counters and oven, little scratching sounds all night long. One time a maintenance man came by after weeks of us calling and putting in orders, and his idea of solving the problem was shoving a dish sponge into the mouse hole. One time, a maintenance man came into our apartment to fix our toilet, even though the apartment that requested maintenance was the one upstairs. Relatedly - there have been a TON of theft reports related to maintenance that enters your apartment, and because of that my roommates and I insisted we be home everytime maintenance stopped by. They'll shut off water with barely any notice and then not return water service for many hours after the expected time. They'll tell you that Internet is included for free but it's absolute garbage internet that cuts out all the time nonstop. They charge you suspicous amount of money for heat - even in the summer when the radiators are off. And on the topic of radiators: they won't turn on usually until late January, when it's already freezing cold. If you call a maintenance man he'll tell you you just have to wait and/or freeze to death. Depending on the building you're in, the laundry may or may not be a complete pain in the ass. They might force you to get a laundry card to load money onto - it'll cost you at least $6. Another time, the USPS person lost the keys to our building and we all stopped getting mail for literally over a month. We complained to both USPS and MAC apartments, who told us they could do nothing, as if it wasn't completely illegal to just stop delivering our mail. We had to harass them for weeks before they managed to get a new key to the USPS person. Their online portal to pay rent is also a mess. Many times our rent wasn't processed by the website in time and they would peg us with a $75 late fee, despite the technical issues on their side. We spent hours disputing false late charges, which they said they had cleared. After we moved out, we were billed for those late charges that they told us had been erased. In short: living with MAC was a consistent and agonizing pain in the a$š for three years. Every single day, before I go to sleep, I get on my knees and thank the Lord Jesus that I never have to deal with these dicks ever again. They don't care about their residents at all, and they know that because we're college students, we either 1) have no other options or 2) are first-time leasees and don't really know how to navigate the details. If I had a billion dollars, I'd move back to Hyde Park, buy a bunch of apartments and rent them for super cheap to undercut MAC and run them out of Chicago and back to hell where they belong. There is no end to the bitterness in my soul due to the grief this garbage excuse for a company has caused me (as well as hundreds of other students that go to UChicago and had to live with MAC). Run away. Find an independent landlord. read more

This is ABSOLUTELY the WORST. Experience. Ever. They try to rip you off every way possible. Don't be fooled by a good rent price because that doesn't mean anything. $180 utility bill for a one bedroom apartment? Am I leasing with Trump tower? No. They are fickle people, promises one thing and NEVER keeps their words. DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH THEM. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Makes you sign a paper, then shreds it according to their own favor. Building managers are undecicive, stupid, and looks miserable working here. Please educate yourselves and learn to keep promises, and try to be good to your residents. Please be professional, I feel like doing business with a bunch of teenagers here. read more

I rented from MAC for two years (two separate apartments). Frankly, the rent prices are way higher than they should be. I was lucky enough not to have major breakdowns in the apartment but charging over 1500 for a two-bedroom in Hyde Park is a little ridiculous. My biggest problem was that my second apartment building had a laundry room with one working washer and a broken dryer (which was not fixed the entire time I was there). I have to give credit to them though. When our sink leaked all over the the kitchen floor, it was fixed and the cabinet below it was replaced. I am now leasing from a private landlord for the same rent that MAC charged but it is triple the size and much safer. read more

I do not recommend MAC. Period. All you'll get is lip service. Lots of things in my apartment have been broken, and whenever I call to request maintenance service, they're always like "Yeah, I can totally have them come by today." And then they don't come. And I call back. And they claim there is no maintenance request in my record. The maintenance guys are pretty rough. Not friendly, invade your space without asking if they can open certain cabinets or drawers etc. I had to call the police when a resident in my building was waving a gun around and threatening to shoot another resident in the middle of my courtyard. I obviously notified MAC the day after and was told my building manager would talk to the police so the incident would be recorded in that resident's record. My building manager kept saying "Oh my god, this is so serious, I will take care of this and call you back, blah blah blah" and she never did. When I called back a week later she had no recollection of our previous conversation. MAC decided to spontaneously remove the fire escapes of my building and didn't let us know which day they were going to nail our back doors shut. As a result, a lot of my outdoor furniture was left out there and I don't know where it is now. I've called to try to locate it, but no one knows where it is. I've been without a back porch/fire escape for over a month now, which means I have to walk all the way around the block to put trash in my building's dumpster. It's summer so there's really no reason why construction should be delayed. There was a huge thunderstorm about a month ago and many apartments in my building had severe water damage as a result. Guess what MAC did to solve this problem?? They installed fans in those apartments to let the water dry. That's it. My building's laundry room is foul. It's moldy, smells atrocious, and attracts cockroaches. There is grafitti on the walls, a lack of lighting, and a huge moldy puddle in the middle of the side room. Exposed electrical wire near standing wasted. It's definitely dangerous and against building code. Also your packages will get stolen at some point if you live in a MAC building. read more

I found management here to be incompetent. My main point of contact on the 47th street unit was very unresponsive, I usually had to follow up with him over a period of a few weeks to get any response from him. Additionally, I was overcharged $160 and was told they were refunding it. Several weeks later I had no refund and when I called to follow up they told me the refund hadn't even be requested. Also, there was a homeless guy who kept getting into the building and sleeping in the laundry room. I wouldn't recommend Mac Properties. read more

Moving into a MAC Property with the help of Ken Hall was a great experience. He was very professional and even went the extra mile when I asked to see the apartments for a second time to look over the place with my mom. He was helpful in getting me the additional information I needed when it came to signing the lease with the building and I never felt rushed. I originally only came to see what was available in the neighborhood not only did Ken Hall show me what was available but he provided the added bonus of what was the happenings in the neighborhood regarding current trends and things to come. This review is basically for the service that Ruth from Mac Properties has provided us with the rental agreement changes. We have lived with Mac for about 6 months now, with some hiccups in maintenance service. But, their management services have been professional. We requested for change of tenants, and Ruth made the process really easy for us. As it is always said, It is about great people who make things worth-a-while. Ruth has gone above and beyond in making the transition process easy and reinstalling our trust in Mac properties. We would love to see a similar proficiency in maintenance service as well. This is a review specifically for the mac management services and Ruth precisely. :) read more

I'm very disappointed in my services with Mac properties! I saw a mouse in my apartment and they didn't attend to this issue until days later. Mind you I pay almost $1300 in rent. I didn't feel safe in my apartment and didn't sleep there until a week later. I reached out to Ruth when it happened and I told her that since they're not treating this as an emergency, I need to buy traps to catch it myself. During our conversations she told me that I will be reimburse for this inconvenience. When I spoke with her later in the month, she told me that she didn't say that at all ( like I would make this up). Then today I find mouse droppings in my cabinet so the issue was never resolved. I'm so disappointed and upset with Mac and I will not renew my lease! read more

Before moving into Mac Properties, I was like many people who read the reviews and assumed the reviewer was expressing an isolated experience. So, I ignored everything I read and moved in. My issues started before I arrived. I informed the leasing agent of things that needed to be fixed before I moved in but to no avail! Every single month since living in Mac, I've had issues. Mice, windows, blinds, closet shelving, shower head not working, refrigerator not closing, broken fan, bathroom doors not closing, mice, mice, mice, mice, did I say, mice, mice have eaten holes inside and outside (by the back door), leaks in the bathroom, floods, broken light, one month they took out my rent twice. They said they only saw one payment - I had to call the bank to confirm that they doubled my rent in one month. They apologized and said they were human. After many, many countless times of saying not to allow anyone into my apartment, guess what - they did anyway. MAC Properties has been the absolute worst property management in the history of humanity that I've experienced - but when informed, it was stated they believe they're great considering how fast they respond. I would say they respond, but EVERY SINGLE MONTH and MULTIPLE TIMES A MONTH is quite excessive, ESPECIALLY in a PANDEMIC. My apartment also flooded twice; there has been a smell in the bathroom since (it comes and goes) I'm in a garden, this "box" collects the water/oil from the building's kitchens (and it smells horrible - it took several months to identify the issue), I hear the water. The other night at am in the morning, I received a call for maintenance to come into my apartment to fix an issue for my neighbors at 2 am. I told them I did not have the way they needed to help, and they were persistent only for them to come and DO NOT FIND WHAT THEY CLAIMED THEY NEEDED. I will repeat this; management is horrendous. I've been trying to move out since I've seen those nasty mice, but they have not been willing to work with me. Lastly, for COVID-19, I had to REQUEST that they wear masks and gloves because they were not. They also sent out an email "encouraging" tenants to pay their rent because that's how their employees get paid. When I asked (more than once), how are they protecting residents, ESPECIALLY those that have FREQUENT visits like me, no response! I asked SEVERAL times and even sent what other property management companies were doing... still silence. About a month give to take, they sent a DRY corporate letter sharing a lackluster statement (in my opinion) regarding the matter. After the last flood, I was offered $50 for "my patience" 'never mind that I had to CLEAN and soak up my apartment because maintenance was very busy with several other floods. He probably stopped longer answering his phones or text (the only person on duty for ALL of Mac properties). The above was what I submitted to the BBB. However, as of today, 7.7.20 I JUST had ANOTHER flood and my bathroom tub has a constant drip (not related to the flood). I AM SO OVER THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I am a current resident in one of the high rise buildings, east park tower. My property manager is excellent! Very professional and thorough. My only complaints are that it seems as if the water is always being turned off. Also, you can't have a dog but there is a park across the street and hyde park is dog friendly. Other than that, the building is kept clean, there is free bagels every month and there's good heat in the winter. read more

MAC is okay. This will be a long, detailed rating and hopefully you'll find it useful. All prices are the total prices, not per capita. We rented a 2 bedroom apt on 54/Ellis last year. The paperwork was smooth and after some haggling we managed to bargain the move in fee from 250 to 125. Service is relatively quick IMO; we had our internet problems fixed within 2 days of sending the service report. Toilet clog was cleared within 2 days. Doorbell problem was cleared within 2 days. Washing machine breakdown fixed within 2 days. Apartment was pretty poor, noise insulation between the rooms very poor. Insulation very poor, heating takes at least an hour to get hot. That being said, for around 1060 including heating for 2 people, it's pretty reasonable. It cost us $350 in admin fees to take over our seniors apartment. We thought that was very high, but we are unaware what other property management companies charge. after much debate, we decided to view it as a LARGE TIP for our building manager and let it slide...what choice do we have? MAC is a monopoly. MAC said they "do not charge a security deposit, but we do have a non-refundable administrative fee, which starts at $350 for studios & one-bedrooms, and goes up $100 for each additional bedroom." "This fee isn't charged to market the apartment, but for fees incurred on the back end (paperwork, lock changes, maintenance, etc.). This admin fee/move in fee is typical amongst other Property Management companies in the neighborhood. We are offering $200 of this fee towards your first month's rent, as well as waiving each of your $50 application fees." Overall, I'm neutral toward them. Pros and cons, to be fair they seem better than my seniors make them out to be. read more

Mac is full of shit!! I called abt mice activity, the guy said he didn't see any activity so he didn't do anything. The nxt guy supposedly sealed the holes. A few weeks later I notice droppings and even recorded the mouse running around in the kitchen. I call for maintenance, the lady says they'll be here between 12 noon and 5p on today...I called several times to see if they were still coming because I took off work; the same lady said maintenance just left an hour ago (4:41p) and they would be here shortly. It's now almost 9:30p and no call/no show. The bitch blatantly lied. I missed work for nothing!! Oh no I got to see the mouse run from my bathroom into my bedroom. I will be paying a visit to the office before work. I'm breaking my lease once I find a place. There were mice droppings on my bed and my bed sits pretty high Laundry Room: for the past month only 2 washers work...There are no signs to inform you, just friendly residents. The machines take your money and nothing is replaced by MAC. I see a few of the maintenance guys hanging out around the building but never working. read more

I've been living in Regents Park ever since before it was bought my MAC. And we all know how that purchase was managed. Really badly indeed. Also, since MAC has only one thing in mind: profitability, they don't give a damn about their residents, in particular if they can make 10 bucks more on your apartment. So, just today I learned they basically threw out of the window all the deals that the previous owners made to attract students to the property, and in one go, MAC, the ever money hungry monopolist, or shall we say, vicious capitalist, ups up the rent by $300... And they can do it, since chances are that one has to move to another of their properties anyway. In short: avoid MAC, and if you can't find anything else, don't rent in Hyde Park. Most unpleasant company. Ever. read more

We live in 5128 S Cornell since September of last year, and I wish so much I have read Ryan and Rebecca's review before moving in. We had every possible problem you can imagine, leakings in both sinks, no water pressure, toilet didn't work, fridge broken, stove not working, plugs don't work, windows from half of the house didn't open because the painted all the windows closed !!! And as it's not bad enough this place is disgusting, after months of exterminators coming here every week the roach problem it's done, not the bedbugs. Imagine yourself living as hostage of this pest for 8 months, I don't even know how many times the exterminators been here, always the same useless treatment for the bedbugs to come back 2 weeks later and we spent money from our pockets to solve the problem, there is not one day that I am not worried about drying my clothes, sheets, putting tape on furniture feet, or spraying the couch. I just want to get out of here as soon as I can. read more

Mac Properties is absolutely the worst!!!!! I lived in Regents Park for 7 months and there is nothing luxurious about the building nor the apartment. Endless issues nonstop. From plumbing to the bugs to the mold that should have cleaned up before I moved in. Management is absolutely horrible. They are so nice to you when you are searching for a apartment, but once you pay your money and sign the lease, everything changes!! Leasing agents won't answer any of your questions and the managers are horrible. The service itself at Regents sucks! Never answer the phone, nasty attitudes and everything. Work orders take the longest to get done. Just don't sign a contact with Mac! They buy majority of the property in Hyde Park so you are stuck with them. Luckily a leasing agent that used to work with them, helped me move into a way better luxurious apartment than so call "luxury Regents"! Whatever you do, do not move into Regents!!!!! read more

I'm almost at the end of my lease with Mac and I can't wait to get out of here. When I first moved in they were pretty on top of fixing things, I had a few plumbing issues and they were fixed quickly. However, the water in the building would frequently be turned off without notice, if there was notice (rare) it would be sent just before the shut-off or on some occasions after the shut-off. My refrigerator broke three times in the course of two weeks, they finally replaced it after the third time but not until after all my food had spoiled. The paint on the walls is cheap and scratches easily, noise complaints aren't taken seriously, and in the summer there are centipedes in the apartment. My cat also caught a mouse once. Half the dyers in the laundry room are always broken and the lights on the outside of each building are nearly always flickering and going out. I sincerely hate it here. read more

I have lived in a Mac apartment for a year, and it has been the worst renting experience I've had. Their customer service is non-existent. Because they manage so many properties in Hyde Park, they do not care about individual buildings (let alone renters) and pay little attention to the needs of residents. After a break-in, it took Mac several days to send someone to help us improve our apartment's security. Even then, they only gave us basic implements that did little to make us safer. Our heat was turned off earlier in the year for two weeks when temperatures were in the 40s. Maintenance came to our apartment and made sure the radiators were open, but that was all. I would not recommend renting from Mac to anyone. read more

Since that time they have tried to guise my "aleged amount owed" in the form of a gas bill and and debt collections after a no money judgment was entered by the judge. Stay far away from the roach and rat filled place that is Mac properties and Danielle Hamilton. read more

I will admit that I have had a few issues with getting my tub properly reglazed. But Mac Properties brought in real technicians and aces at their craft. Mr. Kenneth Elliott did an immaculate job on the tub. My tub looks awesome! As always, Mr. Kevin Newsome did and always does an excellent job! Thank you! read more

I lived in a MAC apartment at Ellis Court for two years. Two of the longest, suckiest years of my life. I had very little heat in the winter, and when I called to complain I was either given a run around or talked down to like I was a child. I had to buy a thermometer and send them pictures of it reading 60 degrees before anything was done. My cat killed two mice while we were there, I saw and killed several roaches, and the matienance crew often acted like I had 'IDIOT' tattooed on my forhead. Half the time, they tried to blame me for their problems. I should have known that this was a disreputable company when I first moved in. The day before I moved in, they called and told me that my apartment wouldn't be ready on time. They forgot to get it ready. But they were gunna be really nice to me and take the week it would take to get it ready off of my first month's rent. No (explative!) you're gunna take that off my rent. And when I asked what else I'd get for breach of contract (As we had already signed our lease) they told me the apartment would be ready on time. Do not rent with them. They do NOT own all of Hyde Park. There are great landlords out there, but you have to look for them. Added in response to the comment below: Thank you for your prompt feedback, Greg. However, I do believe I must take some issue with your comment that your crews asked me to remove my air conditioner "several times". I was asked ONCE and removed it promptly. Either you owe me an apology, or you need to review what your personelle are tellng you, as it is inaccurate. I would also like to know why my apartment was cold before I got the air conditioner, when all windows were sealed. (For reference, the winter of 2009, three complaints were lodged, culminating on one sent Dec. 15th, 2009 along with a picture of a thermometer in my apartment reading 60). I have other issues with how I was treated, but first and formost was the heating. read more

DO NOT RENT WITH MAC APARTMENTS. You will have a difference experience ... but not for the better. I thought the people were exaggerating when reading these prior to leasing ... WE ARE NOT! I reside in Maple Court on 47th Street. Have been here since October of 2015 and I cannot wait to move out. *** Apartment only Issues *** 1) Upon move-in date, I was locked out of my apartment for 4-5 hours because the key given to me was NOT unlocking the apartment door (front or back). Then, the maintenance/key guy said he was on his way. Hour later still was not. Had to wait for ANOTHER guy (who was nice). The lady I talked to was nice (Brittney) but move in day was horrible. To top that off, the crew that cleaned the apartment prior to my arrival left all of the items on the back stairway right outside my back door. These items of trash, old caulking, paint, was put in a black kitchen trash can that looked to be from the old resident. I called to have it removed because I found raw meat inside (near the top). After a week or two, finally had to move it ourselves. 2) There are cracks all over the walls and ceilings. When I first moved in, I noticed a few and they were patched, they are still cracking. Did call to notify at one point, not been fixed. The building is sloped so much that my oven rocks when in use. 3) The neighborhood is not safe. Flat out. There are men that hang outside in groups. They are the same individuals, a few reside in the apartment complex. I cannot say they sell drugs for sure, but there are exchanges of money and plastic bags. I have witnessed people climb the side rails next to the high gate to gain access (due to the front gate not working). 4) Today, the gate actually works, prior it would either not lock, stay locked or stay locked but would not shut. The month of May was a good month for the gate. 5) The people that reside are a mix of students, hard working people and ... some questionable characters. My favorite is the lady that eats the building. Until recently illegal substances were commonly smelt in my particular section and wasn't too much of a bother until my clothes/cloth/items in my closet started to reek of the smell. I do not partake. This required a formal complaint to the office. I have not had the issue since, instead I smell lovely incense. 6) We do have a buzzer system, door-to-door sales people made it inside the gated complex and INSIDE the individual stairwells to the various parts of the building. People get buzzed and just open the door to the common stairwell. *** Parking Lot *** The parking lot next to this building is available for rent/lease by singular spaces. I truly do not know what the current price is. 1) When first signed up the gates were constantly not working or just up to allow anyone to park. When the people that tried to park freely (when the gates were up) then got trapped, they would bend the gates to get their car out ... thus resulting in an annoying cycle of unsecured parking. As of writing this, we have had about 2 months without any issues with the gates. So, glad that's fixed (after many, many calls). 2) The 'after hours' parking number for issues is a joke. It is not considered an emergency when your car is trapped inside (because the card reader doesn't work) or if you cannot park inside (because the card reader doesn't work). Unless you have a member of management trapped with you inside, don't expect to get in/out anytime soon if the hours are not "normal business hours". 3) It has been 2 or 3 months since the security lighting has been off. We have called many times, including today. The Resident portal had the ticket showing as fixed at one point too (no, it was not fixed). Still a pitch black area. 4) Sometimes the lot is used for events for the company across the street. It hasn't happened in a while, but we get no notification when the lot is being used, nor are our specific spaces reserved so we can park in the spot that is noted on our lease ... that we pay for. *** Management *** 1) NEEDS TO COMMUNICATE WITH RESIDENTS ********** This is ridiculous. The below (and all of the above) are more proof of the lack of communication. 2) Our hot water was shut off for 2 days with no warning. We had to call and ask what was going on. According to the resident line, they were fixing the hot water heater and they said notifications were sent out. They were not. 3) The ultimate reason for me making this review: Taking away free internet with no notice. We have had issues contacting the internet company when there were outages before and with the most recent outage of 36-ish hours (during a holiday weekend) we finally were able to call the resident line to find out how to go about finding out when there are outages ... only to find that our internet is being cancelled starting June. Which, at the time of finding out, was the next day. No notices WHATSOEVER. I ran out of space to write. STAY AWAY!!!!! read more

Since I moved to Chicago three years ago, I've heard the whispers that Mac Properties is one of the worst leasing companies to work with in the Hyde Park area, but when I found the apartment I wanted, I decided to bite the bullet and do it anyway, and take whatever headaches Mac might give me for the sake of having a beautiful place. Since I've lived in this apartment the past few months, I have submitted numerous work requests and called the leasing companies with my issues and questions. They have been nothing short of cordial and friendly. Specifically, Tianna and Quentin at Mac tirelessly put up with my bombardment of work orders, calls, emails, and questions no matter what I throw at them. We've had a lot of unforeseen issues with our place, but people like Tianna and Quentin make me feel like I'm dealing with other real people instead of the corporate capitalist machine (UChicago shoutout). Tianna specifically deserves a raise for not only trying multiple times to solve my issue with the gas company, but for going out of her way to get her supervisor to call the gas company when we discovered that it would be 6 days until they had their next available appointment and were hoping to get a sooner one. Even though it didn't end up working out, I'm grateful that she tried her best for me when she didn't have to. Quentin is also the first person from Mac Properties to actually look at my preferences for communication and email me instead of calling me while I'm at work. While a small change, it was greatly appreciated, since in the past other representatives from Mac would leave messages on my phone at times when I could not call them back and would much rather email. Overall, I'm very skeptical of the great service I've been receiving and will update if anything goes awry, but the great representatives helping tenants with work orders are some of the nicest people I've communicated with so far. read more

I have an extremely long list of reasons not to rent from Mac Properties, but most of them are touched on by other reviewers. The biggest issue my roommates and I faced in our 2 years with Mac in Hyde Park was that unbeknownst to us, the windows by our porch on our second floor apartment gave the allusion that the locks functioned properly, but they actually did not. Our apartment was broken into, and our TV and laptops were all stolen. The back gate also did nothing to prevent intruders, as the chain link fence next to the gate was incredible easy to push against to slide past our "protective" gate. After several attempts to contact management and explain that our unit was not up to code and that their faulty locks were the reason we were robbed, someone finally responded by telling us that it was 100% our fault and that they wouldn't even entertain the conversation we were trying to have. If we had more time and could afford legal counsel, a law suit definitely would have been in order. On top of it all, it took them at least 2 weeks to come out and install proper locks on the windows. It's incredibly unfortunate that they own so many properties throughout the neighborhood - their management and customer service is easily the worst I've had to deal with in any walk of life (including Comcast!). read more

I have no quams with Mac Properties. They are definitely improving and have improved over the years (resident since 2010). There are small communication gaps, but that is not reflective of the company as a whole. Every problem I have had was resolved immediately! read more

Do not rent from MAC Properties unless you are prepared to be monetarily drained. They are all about the money. First, you will be given a rental amount. However, that is not the amount you will pay. On top of the rental amount will be a utilities charge. MAC gets a monthly utility bill for the entire building. They then divide that amount among the tenants. In other words, if you leave your apartment unoccupied for a month you will still be charged for utilities you did not use. They also charge for wifi and hot water. Yes, water is not included in the rent. In the building my cousin lived in there were non-payment of rent notices taped to at least three of the apartment doors. This is a clue. The apartment is also noisy. There are children in the building making noise late at night. This was reported to management to no avail. If you are a student/tenant in Hyde Park, there are other more reputable renters. Please do not rent from MAC Properties. read more
