Beautiful place. Wonderful outdoor seating. Decent service. Calzones are great. Everything else and I mean everything else is overpriced bland hockey pucks. Hire an actual chef and this place would be heaven. read more

Great atmosphere and the calzones are off the hook. I tried the Boston Zone from a dining companion and it was great. I got the Charlotte Salad and really enjoyed it. It appeared like Jason C. said that it was going to turn into a crazy friday night as they were setting up tables for the ID checkers. I liked it. read more

Ok this definitely isn't any type of 4 or 5 star restuarant but for a bar that serves food, it's really good. Nothing jumping off the menu though that screams we deserve four stars. This place is really interesting how it is set -up because some parts of the restaurant are dated and than other parts, like the patio outside, are nicer that restaurant itself. I haven't been back to eat here for a few years and one of the favorites I always ate was a philly cheese steak sandwich...something simply greasy and cheesy with steak fries which are just so yummy and perfect after an entire day of drinking during alumni weekend at Roanoke College. So not gonna lie here, about five years ago, I got kicked out...purely because I told them I was the designated driver (aka I'm under 21 but forgot my ID that "says" i'm 21) and then I was caught "taking several shots without a wristband on" whatever that means...so this place always has a special place in my heart. So, the fries were great but I'm a firm believer that it's really hard to fuck up fries. The philly cheese steak was exactly what it had always been and I also wanted to try the Chicken philly (was splitting these sandwiches, not that much of a fat-ass...well yeah, I am) and the chicken philly was horrible. Really nothing good about it at all. So I ate up the fries, chugged my beer, and quite bitchin' Take care & savor it up! read more

First time here was disappointed with avocado rolls because they were left in the oil too long. Received a voucher for free appetizer. Second time here I had the ahi tuna salad and it was soooo good! Wasabi dressing was a little spicy so I had it on the side. Coworker had the taco salad with chicken chili which he also enjoyed. Lisa L was or server and she was very friendly and attentive. read more

Stayed in Salem on way to Massachussetts. Quiet small town. Obviously this place has been a favorite of the locals for years and now I know why. Local high school and college teams pics are all over. Sports bar atmosphere but great for a family dinner. My wife and I started with the Garlic knots. Must have been a dozen and a half of them. Wow they were delicious. My wife ordered the small calzone with mushrooms and green peppers added while I had the Augustino ( sub). Of course we both both ordered a beer to go with our meal With my sub also came a bowl of soup, which I decided to try the french onion soup. Let me say that had to be some of the best and cheeseiest french onion soup I've had. Yummy!! The sub was toasted just right and having banana peppers on it was just perfect. My wife's calzone was incredible. For a small to cover half the size of a 14" platter. Wow! She said the dough was just wonderful, not real doughy but not crispy enough to make it like a brick. The food is absolutley Fantabulous. You won't go hungry. Our server, Blacey, did a great job. Our drinks were never empty and she made sure we had everything we needed. I will back. All told our bill was less than $40 bucks. If you like to sit outside the have a very nice brick patio out back with a fireplace that was burning oakwood. Mmmm the smell of Autumn read more

I visited with coworkers before a funeral. The crab artichoke dip was very good with warm pitas. The atmosphere is relaxing after a long day at work. Loss of two stars due to main dish quality. The server highly recommended the jalapeño meatloaf, being a fan of meatloaf I was sold. It was sub par. She specifically said it "doesn't just taste like meat", but that's exactly how it tasted with all the brown gravy poured over it. If you're looking for a good meatloaf, I still recommend Cracker Barrel. I may visit again if in the immediate area, but it won't be for the meatloaf. :) read more

Great service and big portions. Make sure and ask for the meat or fish to be a little less cooked than your desired doneness. Erika the waitress is super nice and was cool about splitting up our checks. Music selection is also great. read more

You walk in filthy and greasy. Kitchen is abhorrent. My half Pound burger was puny. Said it came w lettuce onion tomato mayo some skrimpy lettuce was on it. My wife got a sandwich- no mayo. The only thing that was good was my daughters burger. Fries were ok and the sweet tea was good. Service was decent. You could tell server was trying. The historical sports pictures were a nice interior touch. What we witnessed was a top down issue. No quality control. We liked our bnb, NEVER AGAIN Mac and Bobs. I usually don't write reviews but this place needs to be inspected and or overhauled. read more

It was over 10 years ago I popped my Boston Zone Cherry and haven't looked back since! Whenever I'm out of town the only thing I i thing about when I return home is a good ol' Boston zone. Great family atmosphere! read more

Had a family birthday dinner here last weekend and all I can say is that everyone was happy with the great service and awesome food! I had a calzone and I'd put it above any local pizzeria and my wife loved her steak as well. Looking forward to our next visit. read more

I visit when in town to see family 3-4x per year and consistently experience among worst service at any bar I've seen anywhere. No indication of any interest in sales. You do get to regularly overhear bartenders talk among themselves and how much they hate being here. And most telling of all, the bartenders regularly have their back to the bar and they will walk pass an empty glass a dozen times; you have to flag them down and bother them for a refill. I feel bad for the owner. read more

Normally my go to visiting my son at Roanoke College. I love anything with the ahi tuna there. But I have to say the service aka waitresses are sub par. I Last night was the last straw when I was tossed my entrees and bill as she walked by. I felt because it was only a party of two with one non drinker that I was sub par for our waitress Ms G--y. Being a New Yorker I have never left less than a 20% tip but last night was compelled to leave 15% and as my son said should have left nothing. read more

Ok. I've eaten twice today and the meal I had at sheetz was way better. The food here was bland, unimpressive and I think microwaved. Burgers were tasteless and cold. Meat balls were cold. The food came out so fast it had to be sitting waiting for some poor person to buy it. Horrible. Go somewhere else. read more

We were driving from PA to TX and stopped here for dinner because it looked good in the pics and had decent reviews. Walked in was greeted by three friendly hosts and the place was huge, and had great seating outside too. Our server, Kayla, was great! I ordered a beer but then realized they had another beer I liked and I asked if it was too late to order that one after she walked by me and she said no, and literally jogged to the bar to ensure I got the right beer! Then I ordered the Chicken Pesto Sandwich which was mouthwatering and sooooo good with a side Caesar salad. Highly recommend! read more

We stopped here for dinner. The service was good and the drinks were very good. The bartender made mojitos which were the best I ever had. The food was average. My chicken sandwich was dry and the description said chipolte seasoned, which it wasn't. The cheddar fries were just cheddar cheese melted on top which congealed into one clump. The interior reminded me of a Perkins and not a sports bar, which it appeared to try to be. Average meal at best. read more

What an incredible disappointment! Mediocre food presented poorly...further doomed by sticky tables [Even after asking to have the table wiped off!]. Our napkins and silverware stuck to the table! The Roanoke County Health Department needs to seriously investigate this establishment. Mediocre food, indifferent service; bad when you have to ask the cash register crowd for your check. All in all, a very, very disappointing experience. We will not return. read more

I've tried. Really, I have tried to like this place. It used to be good 20 years ago. Over the last 3 or 4 years every time I have reluctantly been here the food has been bland at best, and absolutely offensive on my last visit. I ordered the blackened chicken Alfredo, thinking I was safe. Wrong. What I got was a sauce that tasted like acid reflux. I'm not exaggerating, it was the same exact vile taste as those 2am post Super Bowl party burps that wake you up and make you rush to the medicine cabinet for the Tums. Thinking my palate was off, I offered someone else at my dirty table a taste and said nothing of my experience with it. They said the EXACT same thing. That's it. No more, I'm done. I tried. There are far better options literally within walking distance. read more

Great food and large beer selection. Service was excellent. We'll be back! The seared tuna entree was very good as was the stir fry bowl. Yum! read more

Our waitress was hilarious and brought me a ton of lemons, which I love. The burger was bland, but the rest of the food was good. I had the hummus, the Caesar salad, and the steak fries. read more

Dry turkey. Water tasted good. Lemon was sour. Fork was nice. Knife was sharp. Salad was green. Lots of salad dressing.

We look for local establishments when traveling and discovered Mac and Bob's. We had a delightful experience. Food terrific ( tuna and chicken marsala). Large portions. Service friendly. Large Outside dining area was comfortable, casual and inviting. Menu diverse with a meal for all tastes. Easily deserved 5 stars for this type of local restaurant. Highly recommended read more

Sports bar vibes but so incredibly loud I couldn't have a conversation with my husband. Okay food but a miss on the atmosphere

Stopped here for lunch recently. My husband had a Philly cheesesteak & fries; I had a bacon cheeseburger and crab & corn chowder. Food was good but not outstanding. Service was fine and prices were reasonable, but would like to try some other places next time we're in Salem. read more

The brunch is amazing! Our server was phenomenal! Vanja was exceptional!! I ordered half and order of sausage gravy, eggs Benedict, and home fries...do not eat gravy and biscuits anywhere else! The eggs Benedict was perfect, eggs exactly the right runny, the hollandaise was exquisite and how they made mere potatoes so amazing I do not know. Thank you and I will be back!! read more

The food was amazing. You have to try the chicken tenders and the salads. Quick service fresh food

The food here is awful. This was the only time I've ever sent my order back. I got the breaded mushrooms but the breading was too hard in some parts, soggy in others and overall tasteless. The mushrooms inside had a weird chemical taste to them. Clearly not fresh and from the freezer. I even tried eating the mushroom and breading separately to see if it was just one or the other that had a problem. I ended up eating my friend's salad which was really nothing special. The restaurant also had a bathroom odor permeating throughout the entire building. Not appetizing. The one star is for our waiter who was really nice about it, didn't charge us for the dish, and offered to bring me something else. We wanted to go somewhere local instead of just another chain restaurant but really regretted coming here! read more

My family and I went to Mac and Bob's yesterday 8/3/17. Our son wanted a burger but my husband and I wanted something more dinner appropriate. We chose Mac and Bobs because we thought it would be a place that would satisfy our range of desired items. We ordered the Warm Artichoke Crab Dip as our appetizer. This dish was ok... it tasted like warm tuna smothered in cream cheese. There was very little flavor. The thing that saved it from being terrible were the toasted pita chips, although, there were not enough chips on the plate to finish the dip and my husband and I were scooping the dip out with a spoon and slathering it onto the pita chips. This dish was $8.99, for that price there should have been a heaping plate of pita chips to go with the dip and the dip itself should have tasted amazing. My son ordered the Cheese Burger add Bacon. It came with French Fries and some pickle chips. He said it tasted good and he enjoyed it. This dish was $10.99. My husband ordered Salmon Filet. Grilled salmon filet, served on a bed of arugula and baby kale mixed with a citrus vinaigrette and he chose the wild rice as a side dish. This dish looked lovely when it arrived, the presentation was great. My husband felt that the Salmon Filet had no flavor, it was bland and overcooked. The arugula was bitter (which arugula tends to be), however to combat the bitterness of the arugula it was paired with a citrus vinaigrette. The citrus vinaigrette was overly sweet and not the best choice for that dish. The wild rice was fine. This dish was $17.99. Last and definitely least was the Chicken Marsala that I ordered. Chicken filet sautéed in a Marsala wine cream sauce with sliced portabella mushrooms, topped with melted mozzarella cheese and served over a bed of angel hair pasta. I will say I changed the pasta to wild rice. I thought they would bring the rice on the side like they did my husbands. I get that its my fault for not communicating that and I was willing to overlook that. So I grabbed my fork and knife and went to work. It was gross. I have only sent food back one time in my life and as of last night I have had to change that to twice. The creams sauce was thin and runny, Chicken Marsala is supposed to be a savory dish and it was overly sweet. I will say the portion was generous, however, that becomes a moot point when you have a pile of yuck in front of you. This dish was listed at $15.99. Our waitress (Victoria S.) was wonderful, she saw that I was not happy with my dish and she did try her hardest to make it right. Unfortunately after waiting for 30 minutes for our dinners to come, I could make my family wait another 30 min for me to get something else. Victoria had my dish removed from our bill and kindly brought us the check. If you are going to charge big city prices for you dishes you need to bring the big city flare to your dishes. As someone that has lived in NY I am very familiar with prices Mac & Bob's charges, and I do not mind paying those prices if the food quality is on point. My family and I will not be dining there again and I do not recommend unless you are going there for an overpriced sandwich or salad. read more

We were traveling back to SC and looked up a quick place to eat by our hotel. Mac and Bob's was perfect! The staff was really nice and were seated quickly. We ate outside and our waiter was very friendly and attentive. The food was amazing and a lot of it for the price. I will differently come back to eat again. read more

I ordered Andy's salad large portion for pick up. When I get there they were friendly my salad was ready but when she brought it over I was surprised to see how small it was for $13.35. I got home with the salad. The chicken was cold & dry. Maybe the chicken comes cold but I wish that would've been clarified in menu. The dressing was really good veggies seemed fresh & the blue cheese was good too which is why I rated it 3 stars, but the boiled egg seemed like it was imitation shipped in maybe. No crackers or croutons were offered. I'm really looking for a restaurant I can buy a grilled chicken salad on a regular basis I guess I will have to keep looking. read more

Incredible food, fair prices, and a wonderful staff. I happened upon this place while traveling I 81. On my way back home I had to stop and eat again!! Their Stromboli was amazing, the ricotta cheese was magnificent on it!! The grilled chicken sandwich with roasted bell pepper was unlike any chicken sandwich I've ever had!! I will make this my yearly lunch spot during my vacation down south. Thank you for the food, atmosphere, and service!! read more

Mac and Bob's always delivers! Their menu includes a little bit of everything from sandwiches and wraps to calzones and even a steak. The calzone is a MUST BUY. It's the best calzone in Salem. I would also recommend the chicken philly or the Salem Salad. The restaurant itself has a great casual sports atmosphere that pays homage to the championship teams of Salem high school and Roanoke college. The breakfast is definitely worth getting up early for as well. Never write this place off. It's always consistently good. read more

Mac and Bob's was the only restaurant I could find near Roanoke that had Saturday brunch with alcohol! More restaurants in the area should do this! Breakfast items were good and after I put some hot sauce and pepper in my Bloody Mary, it was just what I wanted! Make sure and get there before 11 if you want to order breakfast though. Beer selection was decent with solid staples like at least one ale, stout, IPA, porter, and cider. read more

As a restaurant, Mac and Bobs is good. I have never had a better calzone anywhere else. They are huge and so very good. The french fries are also good. I have not tried much of anything else though because the calzones are just too good not to order. As a bar, it depends on the day and time. I love going there on early Saturday nights before the bar scene gets too crazy. They play good music, you can eat dinner at clean table, and you can actually get a drink at the bar. Once it starts getting late, its horrible. You can't get to any of the bars because it is way too crowded. The music changes and gets really loud. Also at that point, forget about getting any good waiter to take your orders. So you end up fighting through a crowd of drunk 21 year olds to wait 10 minutes at the bar to get a drink that will be pricy anyway. If you try to go outside, its the same as the inside except you wait in a cloud of smoke. read more

Seems to be a popular Salem hangout, and with good reason. Lots of outside and inside seating (sitting at the outdoor bar was a lot of fun!!). Local draft beer selection was impressive and reasonably priced. Food was good as well! I got the pesto-chicken sandwich, but the calzones also looked amazing (and huge!). Overall a solid choice for a tasty, well-priced meal, especially with a large group of people on a nice night. read more

Stopped by for dinner and a couple beers last night, Thursday. Sat at the bar. The tall, thin, bearded bartender was completely ignoring us for quite a while and when he came over mumbled something we couldn't understand so we asked for menu's which he handed us (just one) without a word. Beer selection is very good but this guy really could use a personality if you have an extra one for him please bring it there. He messed up both our simple orders, not sure how he keeps his job honestly. I would go back but not sit at the bar if this guy is working. read more
