Was in town for a birthday celebration for my wife's family. Got back to hotel and decided to try Mabe's as I love trying local pizza places. Have to say this is one best pizza's I have had in long time very flavorful and filling. If I ever or when I come back I will be eating at Mabe's this time we had take out next time we will eat in. If you ever find yourself in Decorah, Iowa, please do two things. One, go to the Whippy Dip. It's a fabulous little place to get ice cream. Before you do that, you MUST make a stop at Mabe's Pizza (110 E Water St) in charming Downtown Decorah. I haven't eaten at Mabe's in over a year, but I used to come up here with Krystyn on weekends to visit my sister at Luther College. Since she graduated last year we haven't been back. Decorah is such a nice town and I'm sure that when we get a free weekend this fall we'll be down there. Mabe's is great pizza. I don't know how else to describe it. It is the very thin variety that they cut into squares and it is really good! Some thin crust pizzas have soggy crust and that kind or ruins the taste. Then there's others that are really crispy but are like a saltine and have no flavor. Mabe's has the right balance. The crust is thin but has just enough texture that makes it perfect. The toppings are good. I recommend the supreme (and it has just about everything you can think of) or my personal favorite, the Canadian bacon and sauerkraut. Their prices are very affordable and you can easily feed a group of six with two large pizzas. The only reason I hesitate to give Mabe's a fifth star in the review is because of the atmosphere. The place looks rundown inside and it's a little dank. Sure, the food is great and that's job one, but it isn't very bright inside and it looks like they haven't changed much about the décor since they opened. Don't let that deter you from eating there, because Mabe's does everything else right. Solid thin crust pizza, reasonable prices and just a must-do in Decorah. If you haven't eaten here, you should. Iq was utterly amazed by the quality of the food. It's beautiful, good sizes, and most of all it tastes amazing. My dad moved here to Decorah and when I mentioned it to a friend in Coralville she stopped me mid sentence and said "have you been to Mabe's yet?" The toppings are nice and fresh, especially the mushrooms, but my favorite part of a Mabe's pizza is the sauce. The toppings aren't overly plentiful, but they're adequate. We are here in Iowa on business. We placed a carry out order even tho they deliver. Well the food was 4star but their inability to know what a person who is traveling needs was 1star. So we as a family decided 3-stars was fair. 1 package of ketchup, no A1 for their phillys & no napkins or silverware. Generally friendly staff and the pizza is pretty good. Thin crust, just the way I like it, but it's not the best thin crust pizza I've had. When I was living in Decorah, I went to Mabe's mainly as a stand-in for my favorite pizza place from my hometown. Mabe's has a long-standing reputation in Decorah, and I think the pizza is good-- it's just not great. Maybe if I hadn't had the best thin crust pizza in the world already, Mabe's would range higher on my list. If you head to or through Decorah, I'd recommend trying Mabe's out. Overall, we gave the restaurant a 4, service was fine, cheddar cheese nuggets were over-cooked, but edible. The pizza was the highlight and the reason we were there to visit. We ordered the Around the Garden. The thin cracker crust was amazing with plenty of fresh toppings and cheese. We were happy to see the local brewery Toppling Goliath on tap as well. Hands down the best wings we have ever had!!! We ordered these and had them delivered to our hotel and they were amazing! Super crisp and had great flavor. By far - the best pizza in the USA that I have tasted. A thin crust and zesty sauce are the attributes that boost Mabe's to such a superior status. The restaurant atmosphere is a tad blah, but the pizza by far outweighs this downside and makes the trip well worth it!!! I do not understand the obsession that locals have with this place. Happy Joes and Pizza Ranch are far superior in food and customer service. The crust on the pizza is too crumbly and I don't think it has a lot of flavor. If I am forced to go there I get double crust, which is better, or the pasta, which is nothing special, but I just don't love the pizza. 10 of us arrived to Mabe's around 5 o'clock. My boyfriend and his family have been here before and constantly rave about it. I have tried their pizza reheated and enjoyed it so I was excited to finally experience Mabe's in person. We got to the restaurant and saw it was a seat yourself situation. We looked around seeing a number of options for us. There was a table or two in the back that looked reserved or there were also smaller tables that could be pushed together. While looking around not one of the 5 workers greeted us or offered to help us out. We finally approached a lady at the register who explained that one of the reservations had just canceled so we could take a table. We sat down and were greeted by a friendly waitress who took our drink order and was patient while 5 adults and 5 kids got settled in. I ordered a glass of Cupcake's Sauvignon Blanc which is fine for the establishment I was ordering wine at. What was not fine however was the water spots all over my glass, it looked so dirty. Just very unappealing. My second problem with the wine was that it was warm. And warm white wine is not the easiest to swallow. For our food the two couples ordered two large pizzas. Once the again our waitress was very accommodating in making sure we got what we wanted. The other adult ordered a fried chicken dinner. While the kids ordered two baskets of wings, a basket of fries and an order of fettuccine alfredo. I and another also ordered a side salad beforehand. We received the side salad and it looked promising enough. Your standard romaine lettuce blend with carrots and a few vegetables off to the side with your choice of dressing. Upon further inspection the lettuce was definitely past it's due date. Most of it was wilted and brown. I finished mine out of pure hunger while the other adult couldn't even stand to have another bite. Finally the rest of the food came. Pizzas came out as they were ordered. One of the pizzas was not cut all the way through so we flagged her down while she was dropping off the rest of the food to be sent back. The girl who ordered the fettuccine never received her dish and quite some time went by before the server came back so we could address the situation. She explained that it was not ordered, and so we opted to just leave it be. She was gracious enough to offer it twice, but we declined. Others at the table say they heard her order it, but I did not. Either way it was a big group and mistakes happen. The pizza itself was lackluster. I enjoy that thin style of pizza, but there was something about it that was so disappointing. I wish I could tell you what it was but I kept looking at my sister in laws chicken dish wishing I would have ordered that instead. Which I think says a lot for a place known for its pizza. While eating the server did not offer us another round of drinks and my water went empty the rest of the time we were there. She started clearing plates and figuring out how to divide checks. Didn't ask if there was anything else we needed before bringing checks and I wanted some dessert. I was able to let her know and when she brought check. I ordered ice cream and these fried pizza dough balls. Everyone was cashed out while we waited for my dessert. It took about 20 minutes of being cashed out for me to finally receive dessert, but it ended up being my favorite part of the meal so I guess worth the wait? A great pizza place in downtown Decorah. The service was prompt and responsive with a very clean seating area. I had their 4 meats pizza. My server brought me a fantastic drink and promptly took my order. Remember that pizza isn't fast food but my pie was out quickly. The crust was thin but not crunchy and the sauce was perfect. We decided to go to Mabe's based on a suggestion that it was the best pizza place in Decorah. At first, the atmosphere made it seemed promising as it resembled a small town pizza place. It was busy, and had a wait for a table. The hostess took our name and order so it would be ready faster by the time we were seated. After a 15 minute wait, nothing unreasonable, we had to wait a good 10 minutes before our waitress took our drink order and returned with them. Our pizza did come by roughly the time the hostess had indicated, though one had slightly undercooked crust. Our waitress showed showed up only once after we received our pizza which resulted in a wait of at least 15 minutes after we had finished our pizza before we received our check. Overall, the pizza was okay, the wait was reasonable, the service could have been much better. read more

This is one of those places that you just have to love. A locally owned institution. The pizza is greasy, cheesy, and good. Every time I'm in Decorah for work I always stop at Mabe's. Not only is Mabe's known in Decorah for its awesome pizza but even people outside Decorah know it's worth stopping at (conversations usually begin with "going to Mabe's" and replies consist of "I'm jealous right now")!!! The mozzarella sticks were good, the pizza was good enough, but merciful heavens the service. If there's only one other table in the place, how can it take so long? Three of us ate dinner at Mabe's on a Saturday night and we got there before 5pm. It was not busy then. We waited a while before the waitress came to our table. We ordered a pizza and one order of pasta. We waited 50 minutes! Never once did the waitress say anything to us about how long it was taking. We also ordered a half baked cookie for dessert and that took 20 min to come out. I will say the food was excellent. The wait time is terrible and the service was just ok.
