    Golf Metra Rail Station

I visited this Metra train station to catch a show downtown, so I arrived around 4:30 pm. Since I'm…read moreused to the Northbrook train station (where one only has to pay for parking between 5 and 10 am), I had hoped Golf would be similar. To my disappointment, I still had to pay for parking (although I realize it's only $2). Apparently, customers need to pay the fee until 6 pm, which doesn't really make sense in my opinion. Also, overnight parking is not allowed here (I called the Village of Golf to find out their rules). There were plenty of benches to sit on, but as I was about to sit down, another woman who was already sitting on a different bench warned me not to go near the wet spots. I then noticed a bunch of wet areas on the ground. Additionally, an area on the nearby wall had a large wet area that looked like something had been sprayed. I asked her what happened, and she said someone urinated there. What?!?! The Village of Golf police are always parked outside this train station. Knowing this fact, I am wondering how the above situation occurred.

I like some things about this station. It's clean, the wood walls give me old school vibes, and the…read moreold posters and plaques are neat to see. It's missing two important things though, bathrooms and outlets. With tickets now being primarily sold via the Ventra app, access to outlets so customers can keep their phones charged is a must. The need for bathrooms in any public setting should be obvious. When there are wait times of up to 2 hours you've got to provide some necessities, I'd like to see a water fountain and/or a vending machine as well.

This small, unknown Metra station (the bigger neighboring ones are the Jefferson Park and Norwood…read morePark stations) is tucked at the end of Austin Blvd, south of Northwest Highway, behind a factory building. It does make you wonder how Metra finds these little spots to make a station out of. Hmm, I guess I need a history lesson. Anyways, this station is rather unused; the last morning train is at 8:30AM which is rather "early" if you consider that the Metra trains stop at Norwood and Jefferson Park stations all the way until the afternoon. Pro tip: If you decide to go to happy hour and think you can get back on Gladstone Park, you best just plan ahead and park your car either of the aforementioned stations, because the last time the Metra trains stop at Gladstone Park is 9:30PM. Speaking of parking, there are about 6 street parking spots right next to the station. The close stretch on Northwest Highway is 2-hour parking only, and the rest you have to feed the parking meter. Your best bet is parking on Austin Blvd north of Northwest Highway, or the adjacent side streets parallel to Austin, such as Mason Ave. During the winter time, the station is hit-or-miss in terms of snow removal. The little "shelter" area is quite abandoned and unkept; where there were windows in the shelter, there are no more, so you just have 2 gaping holes leaving you freezing to death as the wind blows and howls at you. Overall, not one of the better Metra stations I have toured, but it serves its purpose for the neighboring commuter folks

Not sure what happened to my review and photos of this station... oh well, here we go again!…read more This station is one of the better ones. It's got 2 bathrooms, it temperature controlled, it has multiple outlets so you can charge your phone. It's also got a water fountain, recently restored post-covid. It's got a book donation section so you can read something if your so inclined. Occasionally, the local paper is also available here for free. There's wifi access and this is also an Amtrack stop, which is an added bonus. Nowadays you don't get any service at the stations. No one works here anymore. You can get tickets via the Ventra app, the vending machines located on the southbound side of the tracks, or for cash-only on the train itself. The side with the building is the northbound side, meaning if you want to go to the city you can't hang out inside the station. It's a particularly convenient stop as it's near lots of things such as a local park, the public library, a donut place, ice cream stand, and lots of other places to eat. Overall, this is a very decent train station and I use it regularly.

I didn't feel parking was THAT abundant and there isn't much to the station itself. Then again, it's been around forever unlike The Glen location which I can understand. I can't rate the staff at this location because I didn't interact with any of them. Like I said in the beginning, this station servers it's purpose, but you won't get the "wow" factor included.
